Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

Former Browns coach Romeo Crennel, who recently had hip replacement surgery, has an opportunity to join the Kansas City Chiefs in an unspecified capacity.

New Chiefs coach Todd Haley has an opening on his defensive staff and has not assigned official roles yet to his defensive assistants.
"There's some fluidity on the defensive side and that's why I've been a little vague on who's doing what right now," Haley said at the NFL combine to a direct question about Crennel. "I'm trying to get as many good coaches on my staff as I can. That's not an area I want to talk about right now."

That would be a massive waste of time, effort and money

not to mention the horrible impact it would have on continuity. Park his ass in a golf cart during OTA’s, training camp and practices if his hip is hurting him. He’d be ideal as a DC. Especially over the other two bums.

I know two people who have had the surgery he had

They were almost tap dancing within two weeks after. I think RC will be fine, but hopefully fine on our sideline. :)

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Please?

Bring in Crennel as the Defensive Coordinator and not these other schlubs we’ve brought in (Gibbs and Pendergast, I’m looking at you). Please?

It's a hip

not an internal organ…as long as the role of defensive coordinator doesn’t require him to run the steps at Arrowhead, he should be okay. =)

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

There is still going to be significant recovery time...

I think if they wanted him to come in immediately, he would have been hired already. Rather I see him coming in as an assistant/consultant to help move towards a 3-4 and then moving into a DC role next season. I’d like to have him on the staff in any capacity.

If we get crennel as dc it makes all the other coaching decisions look good.

Agreed

That would allow us to really put apply the Peter Principal to Gibbs and Penegrast. Lets hope.

Agreed

I’m hoping that’s what all this nonsense has been building up for. I’ve been pulling for Crennel since Gunther got the pointed-toe boot.

Thank God!!

This is the move I have been waiting to hear, Romeo may have had an OK run in Cleveland but his Parcels roots go back to the late 80’s with the Giants, this guy brings a vast knowledge of the 3-4 defense. Right now I grade the coaching hires at a C+ but with Romeo you can bump that up to a B+.

I cannot wait to see all the moves they making transforming this team into a 3-4

DRAFT the DE’s from MU & K-state both will be good 3-4 Linebackers

If The Chiefs Make Him DC

My estimation of their offseason coaching hires shoots up a lot.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

It's Hard To Be Positive

When your team gives you so damned few reasons to be. Crennel as DC is a reason to be positive.

Also to the statement about Todd's struggle

Question

No disrespect just curiosity but why choose to blog on a Chiefs site as opposed to other ones, was it the Pioli hire?

by Nelly on Feb 20, 2009 3:41 PM CST up reply actions

Basically.

The New England blog on SBNation is still my first stop, and Arrowhead Pride is usually my second. I’m interested in seeing how the Chiefs will do now that Pioli has been hired, so yeah, you could say that.

Plus, it’s pretty active here, and I usually get to talk about different aspects of the Patriots here whenever you guys mention them, so it’s not like I feel left out.

You wish!

Buck’O and I already went through this. I will quietly root for you guys this year, but my loyalties will always lie with New England.

I will not be swayed into the dark side ;)

by NESilver on Feb 20, 2009 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

My gf is a Pats fan

So I have some love in my heart for them. That and for the reasons I stipulated when I invaded the Pulpit explaining why we deserved Pioli. But that said, she’s already agreed to wear a Chiefs jersey whenever I take her to a Chiefs game. I neglected to mention to her that said game would be the AFC Championship in NE (forgive me my delusions of granduer).

by Sudden on Feb 20, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah yeah NESilver

We all know you’ll be wearing a Tony Gonzales jersey during the Pat’s bye week. Admit it, you’re a Chiefs fan by proxy. You’ve been sucked in.

So it’s true that the Chiefs are trading Tony Gonzales to the Pats? ;)

Nope.

He only wants to go to a contender.

he’s the DC and the other 2 are his gophers

by kcfaninsandiego on Feb 20, 2009 3:38 PM CST reply actions

I kinda figured.....

that this could happen….I said this in another post. Keep things fluid in the defensive coaching staff and target Crennel….That way if you choose to bring him in, nobody is getting demoted…

by ill_spec on Feb 20, 2009 4:06 PM CST reply actions

suddenly

If Crennel comes in, this staff that Pioli has assembled wouldn’t look too bad. We would have four coaches with head coaching experience.

by Red and Gold on Feb 20, 2009 4:09 PM CST reply actions

I agree

Crennell and Gailey as DC and OC looks pretty good.

Romeo Crennel

I think we should hire Romeo as our Defensive Coodinator. Look at what he has done int he past:

College
After one season as a graduate assistant with Western Kentucky (1970), Crennel served as the defensive line coach for three seasons (1971–1974). He then became an assistant for defensive coordinator Bill Parcells and head coach Steve Sloan at Texas Tech for three seasons (1975–1977). Crennel finished his collegiate career with two seasons as the defensive ends coach for Mississippi (1978–1979) and one season as the defensive line coach for Georgia Tech (1980).

NFL

Assistant coach
After spending two seasons as an assistant with the New York Giants, Crennel became the special teams coach for seven seasons (1983–1989) and the defensive line coach for three seasons (1990–1992). In 1983, he was reunited with Parcells as the head coach.

When Parcells stepped down as Giants head coach after Super Bowl XXV, Crennel stayed with the team under the two year tenure of Ray Handley. Crennel left the Giants after the 1992 season and worked as the defensive line coach for the New England Patriots for four seasons (1993-1996) and for the New York Jets for three seasons (1997-1999) during the time that Parcells was the head coach in each franchise.

Crennel was hired as the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator for the 2000 season before filling the same role with the Patriots for four seasons (2001–2004) under long-time friend Bill Belichick.

Head coach
Before beginning the 2003 playoffs with the Patriots, Crennel interviewed for head coaching positions with five teams in under 36 hours. He was not offered any jobs, however, and was passed up by the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Atlanta Falcons.

Cleveland Browns
Crennel went 6-10 and 4-12 in his first two seasons with the Browns, finishing last or tied for last in the AFC North and missing the playoffs each year. The Browns finished the 2007 season with a 10-6 record, just falling short of making the playoffs. Crennel’s success in the 2007 season earned him a two-year contract extension in January 2008.2 On December 29, 2008, following a disappointing 4-12 season, Crennel was fired by the Browns. Following his appointment as head coach, Eric Mangini has said that he would like to keep Crennel as Defensive Coordinator. Crennel had stated earlier he would be willing to stay if the new head coach wanted him to so it is a possibility that he will remain in Cleveland.

Now he didn’t do too well as a Head coach so I think that him as a Defensive coach he should be awesome!!

by javim100 on Feb 20, 2009 5:49 PM CST reply actions

Is it just me or am I thinking stupid again?

I was just thinking Romeo might be feeling a little slighted for not being offered a head coaching gig somewhere else. I mean, you dont here about Shanny or Gruden being offered Coordinator jobs…I don’t know, I like the guy, but kinda feel for him. But I would like the hire as a Def Coor for us.

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

by Lanier63 on Feb 20, 2009 6:35 PM CST reply actions

I Doubt It

His record was so bad, he probably realizes that he’s not getting another head coaching job. And it’s not like Cleveland didn’t give him plenty of time to get things going…he’s just another victim of the Peter Principle.

If Crennel becomes our DC, I will retract all of the negative posts about the assistant hires.

I only wanted you, Romeo.
