Todd Haley continued to add to his coaching staff with the Chiefs, announcing Thursday afternoon that Maurice Carthon will serve as assistant head coach.

The Chiefs also announced the responsibilities of six other members of Kansas City’s coaching staff: Chan Gailey (offensive coordinator), Bob Bicknell (tight ends), Joe D’Alessandris (assistant offensive line), Steve Hoffman (special teams), Bill Muir (offensive line) and Dedric Ward (wide receivers).

Still no DC?

Hmm… let the speculation continue…

And no QB coach... maybe Gailey will take that?

I’d prefer DeBerg if they could talk him into it…

Looks like we

pretty much guess right on what the coaches were going to be doing.

How did I miss this?

Oops.

As for a QB coach, they may want to have a better idea of what we’re going to have (big difference between someone like Stafford and…Leftwich) before hiring that position.

I like the Muir hire for O Line

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

4 Cards

A couple of tears ago would you have thought that we would be excited about having four coaches from the (shudder) Cardinals? Or are we?

I Think I Just Threw Up In My Mouth A Little Bit

The Chiefs just hired Carthon…an unarguable disaster as an offensive coordinator in Cleveland (he was not only unproductive with the Browns as OC, he was despised by his players) and a guy who oversaw a running game last season that got 3.5 yards per carry and 3.6 the year before.

Look…I’m all in favor of coaches bringing in guys they’re comfortable with, but so far most of the guys they’ve brought in have produced terrible results at the jobs they’re likely being hired for (Gibbs, Pendergast, Muir). I don’t give a damn if Carthon was a good fullback for Bill Parcells 10 years ago…he’s been a shitty offensive coach.

Does Todd Haley not know any good coaches out there? Seriously, is his network so limited that Maurice fucking Carthon is the best running back coach he could find? Because I damn sure hope he didn’t hire Carthon on the impression that the guy knows what he’s doing…he’s shown pretty conclusively that he doesn’t get results.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

This was happens when you drag your feet.

Some times slow and methodical is not always the best option especially when after items in demand.

I Don't Even Think It's Foot-Dragging

There are better position coaches out there who could fill in as coordinators or line coaches. These guys are all being hired because they’re buddies with Haley…and I’m fine with that as long as they showed something to indicate that they’re good at what they’re being hired for. But Maurice Carthon is not good. Gary Gibbs is not good. Clancy Pendergast is not good. Tim Krumrie is not good.

This isn’t a welfare program…it’s a football team. Results are what matters, and this isn’t a coaching staff that’s shown it gets results. This is a coaching staff that’s shown that it’s buddies with the guy doing the hiring.

Sorry If You Don't Like That I Hate The Hire

But if your only defense of Carthon is a personal attack against me, what the hell do I care what you think?

If you can’t make an objective case to dispute mine, don’t waste my time.

Totally agree, seems like we are supporting all of Parcell’s children from out of wedlock.

I Wouldn't Have A Problem With That

If it was Bill Belichick we’re talking about. But just because they know Parcells, Haley, or Pioli doesn’t make them good football coaches. Producing results makes them good football coaches, and few of these new guys have produced results. Many of them appear to have been coaches of the weak links of the teams they’re on.

I really agree with all of your points

but am suspending judgment. In many ways I wonder whether the future of the Chiefs will be a case study in coaching chemistry. It will be interesting, and perhaps odd, to see how all of this experience (although not results) will balance (or flop) at Arrowhead.

Although I totally agree with you that many of these hires are perplexing, it could be that each of these guys is a genius in some way, and will be used that way. I know that’s optimistic ‘homer’ thinking, and I’m certainly glad for your comments, which show you have NO homer in you (that’s a good thing), but I think this could be an opportunity to see a ‘sum of the parts’ sort of situation where everyone excels because they do only what they are good at. My impression is that Pioli has this sort of mindset — we’ll just have to see whether he can make it happen.

Also, could hiring some of these scrub coaches have to do with how much money is already spent on Haley and Gailey? Could it even have something to do with holding out some cash to land Crennel?

I Don't Think It's A Money Thing

Haley is making the same salary as Herm…reasonable by NFL standards. Gailey isn’t making Jason Garrett money as an OC. I think the Chiefs hired these guys because they actually wanted these guys.

And your position is fair enough. Perhaps I am writing them off too early and the product they produce will be better than the sum of its parts. But then I’m a big believer of the idea that past performance (while no guarantee) is the best indicator of future performance and many of these guys really stunk in the past…often at the specific jobs they’re being hired to do. Particularly Maurice Carthon. I remember following his stint with the Browns offense (I had Braylon Edwards on my fantasy team) and it was beyond horrible. His firing was completely deserved and I remember thinking, at least Herm’s not bringing him in to run the Chiefs’ offense. He also produced terrible results with the Arizona running game, which was the only unproductive part of a rather dynamic offense, so I don’t think it’s the case of him being plopped into the wrong situation…I think it’s a case of him being not very good. Same with Gibb’s defense in New Orleans and Pendergast’s D in Arizona (where they had talent but still coughed up far too many points).

another small point

there are some advantages, with this late start at getting the team together, to hire people you know are already on the same page. Wasting time teaching a coach your philosophy at this point would wast time to spend on combine analysis, etc

Valid Point

And I can accept that if that’s what they’re doing and I won’t be calling for anyone to get canned midseason. Like I said elsewhere, though, I’ll tend to be really irritable if these guys underachieve at their jobs all year, then get to come back next year because they’ve got an “in” with the boss.
