Vick to KC?

What's up AP?

I am a Broncos fan from Mile High Report and saw an interesting report on the NFL Network's coverage of the combine that I wanted to ask you guys about.

Jamie Dukes, Adam Schefter, and Steve Wyche were discussing if Michael Vick would be able to return for the 2009 season. The consensus seemed to be that he would play for someone in 2009 and Jamie Dukes indicated that Kansas City was a likely place for Vick to end up. He was listing teams that might be interested in Vick and after Dukes mentioned KC he said “wink, wink”. Not sure exactly what that means but I thought it was interesting.

You guys know what he might have been "wink, wink"ing about?

What do you guys think about that possibility?

Poll
Should KC pursue Michael Vick?
Yes! He's payed his dues and could really help the Chiefs to be a better team.

No way! He wasn't that great in Atlanta, he's getting old, and he's been out of the game too long.

Maybe? Can he still play?

Vick

I saw the same piece. I’m not sure why he was winking. Vick was in the slammer at Leavenworth, Kansas, which is a suburb of KC.

Seriously

Leavenworth counts as a suburb now?

I voted No

I don’t think he’s a scumbag….he’s just not a good quarterback. I wouldn’t want him as our QB even before this dog fiasco.

Vick didn’t do anything big in Atlanta. He runs good but so does Thiggy, and Thiggy is a quality kid

+1 million

he deserves another chance in the NFL, he’s just a sucky QB – Minnesota might look at him – he’s likely less sucky than Tavaris Jackson

by PVChiefsfan on Feb 19, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Probably not Minnesota

Apparently they came out and said they only want high character guys (love boat, anyone?). However, they didn’t come out and flat out say we won’t take Michael Vick. I think it largely depends on this draft (and the 2010 draft b/c Vick will probably sit out another year).

He wouldn’t have far to move. How far in Leavenworth from KC? :)

There Should Be A Fourth Option On The Poll

“Why in the hell would we want a 30 year old convicted felon with a questionable attitude and a 53.8% career completion percentage?”

Vick wasn’t a good enough QB to play for the Chiefs before he spent two years in Leavenworth. He’s definitely not good enough now.

Scumbag Doesn't Really Enter Into It

My opposition is mainly based on the age, absence from the game for two years, and questionable talent at QB before incarceration.

Now that we’ve got a Broncos fan here, though…you guys hearing anything about what the Broncos plan to do with Peyton Hillis? Are they looking to use him in that Mike Alstott role?

I Agree

He’s got some skills and I think he could be exceptional if his injury issues from last season were a fluke. Don’t really know yet, though…he didn’t get enough carries at Arkansas to gauge how well he’d handle extensive work.

He was used fairly extensively as a receiver out of the backfield at Arkansas.

I Was Thinking More Along The Lines Of Carries

Carries tend to put more wear and tear on a back than receptions. And he was in a three back situation there and didn’t get a lot of carries. I agree about his talent…the only wildcard seems to be durability.

yeah...

I don’t think he had any injury problems while at Arkansas.

Last year he just succumbed to the Denver RB curse. Hopefully that left with the old regime.

His injury was somewhat freakish in nature (did you see the catch? ouch!), shouldn’t be a recurring issue, and he should be able to recover fully by the season.

Good Deal

I’m hoping I can snag him as a late round (really late round) sleeper in my fantasy draft next year if Denver doesn’t bring in much competition for him. If they grab a stud running back, obviously his value drops off, but if they’re having him compete with late round picks or Selvin Young (who’s talented but doesn’t appear durable at all) then he might go pretty low and be a great steal.

I think most Denver fans’ opinion of Young has dropped pretty low. Not much confidence in his ability even when he is healthy. He rarely seems to break the first tackle and doesn’t have a great ability to find the holes.

There is a lot of speculation amongst the fans;

however, not much word from the team.

I think most of the fans want him to be our featured RB next year (or H-back). He was really incredible in the games that he played in last year.

Actually, one of MHR’s best contributors just wrote a great piece about Hillis as an H-back).

Vick would be a good backup for Thigpen (or vice versa) as they are sort of similar in style (sort of).

It's Questionable That Vick's Even As Talented A Passer As Thigpen

Plus, when you consider our new coach’s apparent dislike for prima donnas and distractions, the odds of him coming here are pretty remote.

Plus

That game doesn’t really work as well for QBs once they hit 30. Most scrambling QBs are done by age 29 or so unless they can morph into good passers. And Vick showed no indication of that.

If I were a Thigpen supporter

I wouldn’t be touting that his completion % is less than 1% higher than Vick’s.

Especially when that was clearly the worst part of Vick’s game.

Vick in jail

One of my friends was Vick’s superviser in jail. Vick worked in the kitchen. He said he hands were gigantic. When they played touch football in the yard, he said Vick was all time QB. He said Vick seemed to be a decent guy. Doesn’t mean i would want the guy dating my sister.

Vick

I would take Vick on speed alone. He could surely try out as RB, WR, or KR/PR. I dont like him as QB but Vick definately was one of the fastest players on the field.

That's an interesting idea;

however, the NFL Network guys also mentioned that he is still under a farily lucrative contract with the Falcons. Falcons have made it clear that they don’t want Vick anywhere near there, but it’s not clear how they intend to handle his contract. They may seek compensation of some sort for him. However, the NFL guys didn’t think any team would be willing to offer much for him or be willing to buy his contract. Therefore, the Falcons might have to flat out release him.

My point is that depending on how Vick is acquired he could be an awefully expensive KR/PR or backup QB.

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

It was some joke about how Leavenworth (where Vick is in jail) is close to KC. Not quite sure.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 19, 2009 3:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's my take on it

If the O-line isn't built up, a rookie QB is gonna look bad next season. If the O-line is a lot better, Thigpen will win more next season.
QBs drafted in the top 5, back to 2001:
Michael Vick, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Alex Smith, Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Ryan. How many were worth that high a pick? You decide.

by Bleedingredandgold on Feb 19, 2009 5:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I bet Jamie Dukes

Damn it primetime…you posted right before me

Is speculating on the fact that…
1. Vick served in Leavonworth which is right by K.C.
2. The Chiefs are in need of a QB and the with our OL a scrambling QB can fit (plus the comparison to Thigpen)
3. We have the Cap space
4. He thinks Vick will help sell tickets

Personally I don’t want Vick at QB. No team will trade for his rights and the Falcons will have to release him. So if the Chiefs could pick him up after he is cut and sign him to somewhat a minimum amount, I would give him the opportunity to play WR/KR and possibly put him in a Wildcat offense for 10-15 plays a game.

Overrated/Underrated

Overrated- Mike Vick before the legal trouble.

Underrated- Mike Vick now.

I don’t think he’s a great option, by any means. But the people that talk like he was a terrible QB apparently didn’t watch him play much, they’re just reading a stat sheet. He was 38-28 as an NFL starter. Not great, but not terrible. His completion % isn’t much different than Eli Manning’s. He also ran for 1000 yards in a season at one point and was a threat to go the distance on every play. Hell, he’d be the Chiefs #5 all-time leading rusher.

NOW, he’s been in jail, and there is no telling what shape he’ll be when he comes out. I agree w/ JZ, the Falcons will end up cutting him, when that happens, I’d be fine with seeing what he could do as a backup QB/Wildcat guy. I don’t think he could return kicks, but if he still has his quickness, there are plenty of situations he could be on the field.

WTF

Why does everyone say he wasnt that good of a QB??

He lead his team to the playoffs 3times

First QB to win a playoff game in Green Bay in over 30years

Lead a team with an OK Defense to the NFC Championship game!!!

As a Freshmen lead his team to a national title at Va.Tech

This is why I say fans judge black QB’s diff then white..I bet most people who say vick was a bad QB will say Mcnabb is just an OK QB but I will have you know that McNabb is the best qb over that last 10 years behind Manning statistically

Let's See

Because his career completion percentage is 53.8%…which puts him near the bottom of the league in most years. He’s had constant off-field problems. He’s shown little improvement as a passer over the span of his career (unlike Donovan McNabb, Steve Young and Randall Cunningham, who were scrambling QBs who developed into good passers). His TD/INT ratio is pretty marginal. He’s shown more interest in setting QB rushing records than in working on his deficiencies as a passer…which is unfortunately not that valuable a skill from a QB. And I don’t want him here because he’s a convicted felon who’s been out of the game for two years so I sincerely doubt he got better at football being all-time QB in pickup games at Leavenworth.

There’s several reasons why I don’t want him here and say he wasn’t that good…none of which have to do with him being black. Next time why don’t you make an objective case why he doesn’t suck instead of coming in here accusing people of racism just because we don’t want our team to bring in the guy you happen to be fond of? Frankly, I found your insinuation to be rather racist and (assuming you’re black) hypocritical.

But...

if we could get him for way cheap, why not? He has served his time. He Has apparently been playing QB in football games in prison (yes I know it is way different, but at least keeps him doing it). He has been doing all sorts of work outs to stay in football shape. And no matter what he is a better back up than Huard would be. so Why not at least see how cheap we could get him for?

by Pontiaclvr on Feb 19, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Because It Would Turn The Season Into A Circus

And because he’s just not that good of a QB. His career completion percentage is worse than Thigpen’s. We’ve already got a better passer on the team. And he’s not a better passer than Damon Huard…not even close. All he is is a guy who can scramble and he’s getting close to the age where QBs like that fall apart.

Besides which, it’s all a moot point until the league reinstates him, and that’s far from a given. There’s been talk that Goodell may leave him out for one more year.

If Vick came to KC

here’s what would happen:

He would go to the plaza and some drunk asshole would say ‘HEY VICK WHY DON’T YOU KILL A DOG.’ Vick would say ‘pssht whatever’ then the drunk guy would say ‘HEY MICHAEL VICK SPIT ON ME’ and he’d go tell the press. For the next 40 years Chiefs fans would call him the spitter and he would go down with LJ and Elliott as good players that people like to rag on because they feel small about themselves.
