Dorsey in the 3-4
Found this on a report of Dorsey last year and thought it was interesting. Many don't think there is any place for Dorsey in a 3-4 but this one differs pretty substantially:
Overall: One, if not the top, DT prospects to enter the NFL in the past 10 years, Dorsey showed the ability to dominate in the SEC when healthy. There are some concerns that he does not protect his legs adequately due to his injury history. He projects to work in any defense, but his best position would be as a three technique in the 3-4 defense as he excels when able to operate in space.

to go along with this
Dorsey’s size matches up well with the starting D- Lines of other notable 3-4 teams,
Pittsburgh, Dallas, NE, Miami, and Baltimore, whether it be at NT or DE. Look for him to have a great season as his potential is unleashed on the NFL.
Interesting
I read MHR’s 3-4 article, and none of the three 3-4 systems mentioned having the NT in a 3-tech…I guess if the line shifted one way, and the LB’s shifted the other way, the NT could be outside one of the guards.
The snip up there doesn't mention NT either
it just says “his best position would be as a three technique in the 3-4 defense”
A 3 technique in a 3-4 is one of the DE’s…. playing on the outside shoulder of the guard, or the 3 gap. Most NT’s in a 3-4 are going to play 0 or shaded toward the 1 gap.
I think he’s suggesting Dorsey would play DE in a 3-4.

Dorsey
That report also says that he might not have the frame to play NT in a 3-4. I asked the question yesterday on some other Fanpost why Dorsey couldn’t be considered able to play the DE position in a 3-4 but no one responded. So I did some research on size alone and for the 3-4DE I looked at these 3-4 teams (Pats,Steelers,Ravens,Chargers,Cowboys, Dolphins,Jets,Browns). It appeared that Dorsey weighed enough as the average weight was 301 lbs and he weighs 297 lbs.
But his height was considerably shorter as it seemed the average 3-4DE was around 6’5 while Dorsey stands only 6’1.
So he is probably too small to play 3-4NT, but why can’t he play 3-4DE? Is it he has too short of arms due to his lack of height? Due to his lack of height, does this put him at a disadvantage against OT in terms of leverage if he played 3-4DE? Can someone tell me why Dorsey cannot play DEFENSIVE END in a 3-4? What is the real answer?
a 3-4 DE
Needs to be tall and have a long wing-span, two things he doesn’t have naturally. They are the ‘service’ guys who tangle with the OT’s and free up the OLBs to pass rush
home, of the....CHIEEEEEFS!
Isn't Alphonso Boone 6-4 and 305, what about Tank Tyler, he is 6-3 306 and might be one of the strongest player on this team, I think that everyone on the entire D-Line has been used incorrectly and put in position to fail, Boone at DE, what a waste.

I agree
Ive been saying for a while our D line is legit we just have terrible coaching. Maybe Pendergast and Gibbs will turn this ship around. We’ve spent enough high draft picks on D linemen already
+1
our D-Line may NOT be legit, but there is no way to know — they are young and presumably have yet to enjoy good NFL coaching
current Chiefs roster + 1 premiere LB FA + Crabtree + defensive draft = CONTENDAHS
"at least we don't need a punter"
Do you think we could move Dorsey to DE,
and draft B.J. Raji to play NT? Why can’t Dorsey tangle up OTs at 6’1"?
I really think that we need to trade up
I think we could take Raji at 3 and than trade up like a 3rd and LJ or a second and LJ for another first. and try and pick up Maualuga or Laurinaitis, I think we could but it would be really hard but i think adding Raji and one of the MLb would greatly benefit us and start us on the right track.
Dorsey can play NT in a 3-4
not every nose tackle has to be an immovable ball of fat like the Chargers have…their NT lines up in 0 or 1 tech, and has 2-gap responsibility – he’s supposed to sit there, occupy the center and guard, and plug the middle.
Dorsey could play NT in a 2 or even 3 technique, and have 1-gap responsibility – his strengths are his quickness and his leverage, something he can use to his advantage shooting through the A gap (or even B gap if he is in a 3 tech)

He has the size. He’s not the largest fat fuck out there but he’s still huge. 6’1" 297 is mammoth, it’s getting bigger ends we need to worry about. Tamba can’t handle a 3-4 on the end, unless hes an OLB which in my opinion is disaster. and he does play with leverage and power. That’s why Warren Sapp was so good. He wasn’t just a plug, he shot gaps and got tot he QB.

AHHH
too bad though Dorsey’s talents would never be properly used. He does best as a Warren Sapp type big play maker rather than an asset to other players’ success
Dorsey = crap in 3-4
A NT in 3-4 is for lack of a better word a PLUG. A giant plug to prevent the tackle and many times the playside guard from getting to the second level. This is not Glenn’s forte, i agree that he could do it, but that doesn’t mean he will excel. He is a playmaking 3 tech, h needs to be slanting and exploding off the ball into the backfield rather than playing paddy-cake like he did all this year. He is not a NT, Vince Wilfork is a NT, a mountain of a man. Glenn is simply not this. Moreover, he can absolutely NOT play DE in a 3-4. 5 techs in 3-4 schemes are long and tall….glenn is neither. That being said, he would def be a better NT than DE in a 34.

What about Babin
i thought Babin was a pretty decent pick up. he has a good motor and got lots of pressure on the qb. he stepped in and made some plays. does he still fit in anywhere or not
Are you guys
moving away from 4-3 to 3-4?
A New Spirit, A New Team, A New Coach, But Same Commitment.
Depends on who you listen to.
According to a report in the Star a couple of days ago (I want to say from Adam Teicher), yes. According to a report in the Star yesterday, maybe.
The coach has said that we’re going to look at what our talent can do best and build around that, rather than going in with a set system in mind and trying to make the pieces we’ve got fit it.
Personally, though I wish we’d pick a system and stick to it, I think we’ll probably end up running some sort of hybrid, mainly because our new defensive guys were successful in two different systems: Gary Gibbs switched Dallas to 3-4 in 2005 and was pretty successful, but failed to run a successful 4-3 in New Orleans. Clancy Pendergast is a 4-3 guy and had the Cards in the top 10 defenses in the league with it in 2005 (and 12th in 2004), but was forced to run 3-4 because Whisenhunt is a 3-4 guy.
