Matt Stafford "may not" Work Out at the NFL Combine
From the FanPosts. Tweaked the title a touch. -Primetime
From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
"The word is Matthew Stafford isn’t going to workout. I hope he changes his mind. The league wants to see him handle a big NFL stage, not some controlled workout at his Pro Day in familiar surroundings. You want folks to drop millions in your pocket and you don’t want to work out?"
Does this mean he has the ultimate confidence in being drafted by Detroit?
I have no idea why he would avoid showing off his arm unless he already knew where he was going. Interesting to note that even JaMarcus Russell, who was assumed in almost all mock drafts to be going to Oakland, worked out.
Makes it easier for Chiefs fans I suppose.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Does he need to?
Does anyone, other than myself, feel that he’s not the top QB? He has nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Let's put it this way
I didn’t think he was guarantee to go #1. Detroit can sit another year with Culpepper (and Kitna if neither are cut) and grab the top LT. I would think he’d work out to convince them he was worthy of the #1 spot. I don’t think he’s guaranteed anything in the top 3.

I'm pretty sure Jemarcus Russell didn't work out at the combine.
He was there but didn’t do anything.

I believe you are correct
I am on a quest to find the answer to one of life's great mysteries-

I'm a little surprised
because of right now I don’t think the Lions will take him. Actually I don’t think he will be taken in the top 5, unless the Chiefs take him (God, I hope not). But he should go to show teams is great arm strenghth, and then maybe someone like the Lions would take him. I still however believe the Lions will take Eugene Monroe, or Michael Oher

He's scared
With good reason. He is currently considered the no.1 Qb and a bad combine performance, which I think he will/would have, will only hurt his stock. If he does nothing, he can’t hurt himself. The big knock on this guy all year has been his decision-making; a trait which I rank just as high as arm strength. I live in Alabama(but am from Michigan) and I’ve watched this guy all year in the SEC and I just don’t see it. He forces throws, relys too much on his arm, and makes aweful decisions frequently enough to make me not want him.

Now Im not drawing any comparisons to him
but the same description would fit Brett Favre.

He is NO Brett Favre
I lived about an hour from Packer Stadium for 25 years before I moved to Alabama 3 years ago. I’ve met and seen Brett on numberous occasions; this kid is not him.

Of course not
Brett Favre is an 18 year veteran and Matt Stafford is coming out a Junior from college. OF COURSE he’s not Brett Favre. Brett Favre wasn’t Brett Favre at this point in his career.
You ask too much of guys coming out of college to be perfect and playing like a grizzled veteran when they aren’t even a rookie yet.

People talk an aweful lot about his decision making
But he does not have an inordinant amount of interceptions.
He had 10 his sophmore season and 10 his Junior season. That’s not bad at all.

Int
he is throwing picks to college safteys and dbs . If he is throwing to those turtles in college wait until he faces real dbs and ed reed then those int are pic 6s and we will all be crying

Matt Ryan threw 21 INTs his senior year alone.
Peyton Manning threw 11 INTs his Senior Year and 12 his Junior year.
Give me a break.

Its not about the INTs
For me its about the completion percentage. In the 5 or 6 games I watched him in(and I did watch him pretty closely with some degree of optomistic interest because of where we are right now) he seemed erratic, unfocused. He had a ton of misreads, guys wide open that he missed entirely. Balls thrown behind or too far in front. Now am I saying that he’s crap, no. He definately CAN make all the throws. He definately DOES have a rocket arm. But I just don’t think he is our QBOTF. I don’t think at this point we can risk that high of a pick on him.

I can't say you're wrong because nobody knows how anybody will turn out in the pros.
But I simply have a different impression than you I guess. I see a young guy that occassionally makes young guy mistakes, but I don’t see that being any different than Bradford or Matt Ryan or any other college QB.
He isn’t perfect, but nobody is perfect at this point. He has all the raw skills, intelligence and has developed good game managment and leadership abilities. With good coaching, his decision making ability (even though I don’t think its nearly as bad as some people seem to) will improve over time.
I just think we can overscrutenize players when we’re looking for any flaw we can find. Hell, people were saying Peyton Manning and John Elway would be busts because of their lack of “decision making”.

Wrong...
Tebow is perfect. And dreamy.

+1
Kind of the same thing that people were saying with Ryan and Flacco last year……
It will be kind of hard to pass up on Stafford if he’s sitting there for us. The guy did play in the SEC his TRUE freshman year. That’s pretty damn good.

Normally, the number 1 QB
doesn’t stand to gain anything from working out at the combine. However, in this case, Stafford is clearly the #1 QB and even if he had a bad workout he would probably still be considered the top QB. He could answer some of the questions people have about him with a good workout and could justify being taken in the top 3. In this case, he would be wise to work out so that he can campaign for the #1 draft spot and make a couple extra million dollars. His agent is doing him a disservice by telling him otherwise. Of course, my argument is moot if he already knows he will go to Detroit.

Most guys slated to go at the top of the draft don't work out at the combine
Jake Long didn’t. Matt Ryan didn’t.
If you’re the top guy at your position in the draft (as Stafford is) the only thing you can do by going to the combine is hurt your draft position.

What about Dorsey and McFadden
both worked out – and McFadden helped his stock by running a sub 4.35

jake long
He did perform in the combine . Nfl network did an entire piece on him experiencing the entire thing.

Who was I thinking of then?

Combine Schmombine
I say Freeman in round #3, second coming of Ben Roethlisberger, that guy is a freakin horse. Let him learn for a season or 2, if Thiggy turns out to be the real deal then we have a Leftwich type player as a backup, how sweet it is.
by Your_Moms_Boyfriend on Feb 13, 2009 4:56 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Except
some people believe that, due to the low quality at QB in this draft, Freeman may go as early as late Rd1.
by Chiefs4Life on Feb 13, 2009 5:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
There is nooooooo way
that Freeman lasts all the way to round 3. He will for sure go in either the late 1st rd or early 2nd. I think it would be great if he was still on the board for our round 2 pick.

Its a sign of how bad this draft class is after Stafford
Stafford – legitimate pro prospect
Sanchez – 1 year wonder
Freeman – Will go no later than the early 2nd round (very good possibilty he goes later in the 1st) purely because of his physical attributes despite his inconsistency.
Nate Davis might go in the 3rd round, after that I don’t think we see another QB taken until the 5th.

I totally agree with your assessment
I have been warming up to the thought of taking Stafford if he falls to us since he is the most legit QB coming out this year. However I do believe that the Lions will take him at #1.
I know how important the QB position is and if Stafford is gone we have to fill a different need first and then take QB later. What QB’s do you think we should maybe take in RDs 2-7?

I think Tuitama and Brown have a chance to sneak into the 4th round.

Rumored that Davis might have a learing disability.....
Got this from the boys over at Mocking the draft:
Thought it might be an interesting read, since were also looking for our very own QBOTF.
