I hope someone didn't already post this but..
Is anyone out there watching NFL Network right now? I cannot believe it. I'm watching Around the League right now and they are picking the best and the worst offseason acquisitions. Now I'm not making this up ok? This is not an attempt at humor or I promise you I wouldn't have posted a second post so soon.
What they do is take a turn with each commentator telling us what he feels were the best and worst acquisition this offseason. Then they all go in turn and comment on whether they agree or disagree. Jason La Canfora just picked Matt Cassel as a worst acquisition for the offseason. Man. Mike Lombardi even got in on the action.
I hate that a lot because it's my belief is that Matt Cassel will watch this program at some point. He will hear about it and want to see it for himself. Someone he knows will tell him about it and then he will go check it for himself no doubt. I think this could be bad for his confidence. I wish they had said nothing at all like that. I mean it can't make you feel very good about yourself can it? To hear slurs like that about yourself? Man. That sucks.
He seems like a fighter though so maybe he will take it as a personal challenge and really try to step it up. He's got to have some talent we aren't seeing right? I mean he couldn't have made it this far without some talent right? I just wonder why Belichek traded him?
Thoughts?

If you're expecting media commentators to be nice
so that players won’t lose their confidence, you are living in a dream world.
Ignoring the comments of the media – especially if you’re a QB – is one part of the recipe of success for an NFL player. It might even be one of the most important parts.

Yeah I don't think this is any different
Than all the other folks talking about him.
And, that’s not a slur, by the way. Just some criticism.
yah I wonder how he'll respond to it. I hope your right and he comes back stronger than ever
Oh hey btw. I never got to tell you how much I liked your post on time to get angry. You did a nice job on that one. I see it’s getting the shit rec’d out of it.
He says he doesn’t read or watch any media during the season. The reason Belichek traded him was becasue he was going to be a free agent, and they thought he was worth to much just to let go, and thought he was worth the franchise tag. plus they probably didn’t want him to go to the Jets or Bills in free agency.
actually Michael Lombardi kind of defended Matt Cassel.
They sounded like us actually. Oh yah I just read your comment Joel. I realized that after I reread it. I meant insult. Mike says the line and lack of a true running game and dropping passes he can’t tell yet. He thinks its fair to wait a little bit b4 passing judgement.
Well I just wonder with Belichek he's so secretive and careful with his words
I wonder if we REALLY know why he traded him. I always wonder if there’s more behind the scenes their not telling the public. We miss out on a lot actually. Now in KC more than ever. It’s different this year with the secretiveness.
I wish those guys were wrong but....
I could go on and on about how bad Cassel has been. There have been issues with the wideouts and O-line and blah blah blah but, really when it comes down to it, when your offense sucks it is usually because the QB sucks. I think that’s the case right now in KC.
The O-line is playing better than it has in 3 years and it hasn’t done a damn thing to improve his play. The wideouts are dropping lots of passes that are catchable and I understand that but, that is no excuse for the indecisiveness that cassel has shown and the damn happy feet. Poor accuracy, terrible pocket presence, inability to sidestep the rush or just step forward in the pocket. No touch on the short passes. He looks like a scared deer in the headlights.
You know what they say: If it looks like shit and smells like shit, it probably is.
Thoughts?
Cassel is a weak armed, inaccurate QB with poor pocket presence. He was developed by the best system in the league whose success inflates the value of what talent they have. Personally, I think we could have built a “winner” just as fast with using our own 2nd rounder than we could have by trading it to NE. Quite possible in 2-3 season’s Vrabel will be retired and Cassel would be looked at as what he’s always been: a backup quarterback.
We don’t have the foundation in place for a QB to be successful anyways, might as well have let Croyle & Thigpen duke out while we actually begin laying the ground work for Pioli’s rebuild. Bringing in a QB first without protection & weapons could end up being more detrimental to his development than we realize.

Agree sorta
that whole hindsight thing. seemed like a great trade at the time because of the Chiefs draft history. Two proven players for a partridge in a pear tree:)
But, Cassel sure aired one out for Wade, who couldn’t run it down. Some better WR’s , not 1st or 2nd rounders, would sure make Cassel look better
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

I don’t want to DRAFT a WR 1 or 2 round. Bowe sure looks good right now.
Bowe 24 years old and Charles 22 years old just freaks me out :)

Amen.We traded for & got a Tyler Thigpen clone.Neither has been any good under center. But TT has an attitude not seen by Cassel.Besides they are paying him 63 mil to suck, learn whatever.I think your suggestion was spot on.

Here's my take on Cassel
I think for the most part we already know his ceiling. I think what he produced in NE is the most he’s capable of and that’s when surronded by an All-Star cast. I think he’s just an average QB who is a good game manager when paired with the right coaching. (We see what McDaniels has gotten out of Orton this year, right?) Cassel is going to be another 3 to 4 year band-aid that’s covered the KC QB position since Dawson.

The Patriots went 11-5 with Matt, this year with Tom Brady the best they can go is 11-5. If you can lead any team to an 11-5 season you are a good QB. I bet if we had Tom Brady here, he’d be doing just as bad, and that’s if he survived this many games. Matt Cassel was the 10th best QB in the league last year. Give him time to grow in the system, give him weapons, and I think he’ll be one of the NFL’s elite.
This is what Matt said about his naysayers.
"I don’t care what anyone says, I know how hard it is to win in the NFL, period. It’s not an auto-pilot type thing that anybody can do. I always hear people say he’s a system guy, and he can’t do it elsewhere. But the funny part is early in the season, when we were struggling offensively a little bit, people were pointing at Matt Cassel, saying he can’t do it. He’s not the guy for the job. But then I started playing better and grew into the role, and the naysayers immediately said it was because I’m a system guy. When I think back about what happened last year, and what I was able to accomplish, I’d say yeah, I was pretty fired up about that.’’
totally different team this year. You are implying that Cassel is as good as Brady and he's NOT!!
And really what was Cassel supposed to say “I suck and the Chiefs overshot the whole target when they blew all that money on me”?? No way. He’s saying what anyone would say. He’s NOT a rookie. He’s an experienced pro QB and he has had 3/4 of an entire season to learn. The team around him has improved and yet his stats continue to plummet.
Defending him at this point is useless because every single stat and his record say your wrong. When he actually doesn’t suck then I’ll agree with you. But when it looks like shit, smells and tastes like shit…thank you 1970…it IS shit.
BTW...
I hope #7 proves me wrong. The only reason I always say he sucks is because well, that’s what it looks like. When it comes down to it, I would LOVE to be proven wrong in this case. I have been hoping for a good QB ever since Trent went down that 1st week of the season against the Bungles. I hope he finds a way to pull himself out of this funk.
Right now...
I’d like to see if Brodie is worth keeping around. I don’t really want to trade Cassel. I think he CAN be good but, right now, he needs some time on the bench to gather his thoughts and get his wits about him because, he looks straight up scared out there right now.
As for next year, Cassel will still be a Chief but, there may be some good options out there in FA and I would definitely not be surprised if we draft a QB somewhere in the draft. Don’t be surprised if we make a play for Matt Leinert.

It doesn't LOOK like it. It is what it is. No one in the NFL makes excuses so why are we?
Right now he IS a lousy QB. Maybe starting this week he will become a quality QB and all will be forgiven. But until then….it is what it is.
Worst offseason acquisition is Jeff Garcia to the Raiders because they chose JaMarcus over him.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

Know what's gonna stink...
Matt Cassel’s ratings are gonna drop so much for Madden 11 :-( (His speed better be better!)
I'm not sure Cassel's confidence COULD drop any lower ... that is, if he's paying attention to what's actually going on down on the field every week
someone mentioned the … I think … Marc Bulger Syndrome (could have been someone else) … the point at which a QB is so worried about sacks or the pocket caving in all the time that he pretty much says “screw it” and just flings the ball w/o going thru his reads
I won’t say Cassel’s the WORST off season deal, but he’s far from looking like the best, or even a moderately good one right now …
and yes, I’d love him on the bench for the remainder of the year to see what Croyle can do – I think the kid has matured, and he sure as hell has a better arm
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
I think one of the reasons why we picked up Cassel was that he's not the kind of individual to lose sleep over these things...
He’s a competitor and won’t lose any confidence over these kinds of things. Instead, he will use it as motivation.
Everyone takes criticism differently and I’m pretty sure Pioli and Haley wouldn’t have wanted a mentally weak person to play under center for the weak team they inherited. They all know how tough it would be and they picked the right guy for the job.
Vince Young took his benching to heart last season because he fell under all that pressure and got in the tabloids about him being depressed and allegedly suicidal (however, I’m glad VY has learned from his experience and made a great comeback so far this year). I do not believe Cassel is that kind of character.

How can anyone possibly say the worst offseason move is not Jay Cutler?
Bears get:
Jay Cutler
Broncs get:
Kyle Orton
2 FREAKING FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS
I’d argue Cutler for Orton straight up benefitted Denver
This is the worst trade since Ricky Williams.

and a third
It’ll be interesting to see if the draft choices turn out like the Ricky Williams draft choice…(pretty much a waste).
Denver has already won this trade though...
Even if they draft the equivalent of a Ryan Sims and Sylvester Morris and some replacement level schmo in the third, they still have done well with Orton, and the fact that the Bears have totally stagnated proves that Orton wasn’t as bad as Chicago thought. That team has serious issues, with zero running game (again), crappy receivers, an aging defense and now they don’t have first round picks to rectify the situation.

Like what Stats?
There aren’t a lot of advanced stats or at least freely available ones.
FootballOutsiders.com has rankings for groups… So you can see how the Entire KC line compares to the lines of other teams. ProFootballFocus.com has player ratings, I dont think they have it entirely ironed out.
But all the basic stats can be gotten from ESPN, NFL.com, and if there is a stat you have in mind a google search will usually get you there. I remember I was curious about team penalty yards and googled it and found a web site.
There is one site that has every conceivable compiable stat but it was really cluttered and hard to search through, I dont remember who it was.
And when I did my stat post after week 4 all I did was take the traditional stats and convert them to rate stats. Because if you ask me, compiled stats do not tell you anything… Whats better giving up 165 yards rushing on 58 carries or 85 yards on 12 carries?

Maybe/maybe not
Maybe with Cutler, they don’t lose those four games, or the wild-card game. Hard to tell. Orton did have a running game in Chitown, Forte had 1200 yards. Point I would make is that, while dabears lost on this trade, arguing the Broncos won is iffy.
Yeah...
they already traded one in the last draft for Alphonso Smith, the corner out of Wake Forest. They used the other one on Ayers the DE from TN. And they packaged that 3rd rounder to trade up in the 2nd to get Richard Quinn, the TE from NC. In my opinion it was a shitty draft. I don’t think Ayers belongs in the 3-4 and he was a one year wonder. Smith will be a decent player, but Bailey isn’t getting younger so you could say they will eventually downgrade at the CB position. If it wasn’t for Dumervil’s breakout season the Donks wouldn’t look anything near what they do. In my opinion a dominant pass rusher can change the entire dynamic of a defense. LT, QB, CB, and pass rusher are by far the most important positions in the game.

Whoa now
QB moving to a new team with a new offense and new coaches….ain’t that easy (ask Matt Cassel).
I think the Bears will be fine once they tailor an offense to his abilities (which is what good teams do with their QBs).
I feel its more about what was given up to be put in such a situation you just pointed out.
Even if they are going to tailor it for him, they took a good step back on offense (not that it was going anywhere great besides Forte). Going forward, its more difficult without all the picks they gave to Denver. Their defense isn’t getting younger either so they have a great chance of being having a tumultuous situation on both sides of the ball.
Is Urlacher a FA?

DO NOT WANT!!!
You would be paying for past performance with him. He would be the equivalent at linebacker that Ty Law was at CB.

They have nothing in Chicago...
Besides an overrated Hester who really isn’t growing into the receivers position very well. Their running game took a step back (while Benson has exploded in Cincy), they have garbage for receivers, and LIke I said the defense is getting old.
The more I think about it, its looking more and more to me that the problem in Chicago is Lovie Smith. That team really has fallen on its face, and just doesn’t seem to care. And even though Urlacher is hurt (again) he really is a shell of his former self.

He didn't pull the trigger on that...
In theory it could buy him some time and get the GM hung, but usually new GM’s bring in new coaches.
Chicago really is a dumpster fire in the making. If they don’t smother it quick they could easily find themselves below the “floundering” line mentioned in another post.

plus Cutler has already proven himself. He can afford a slump. He's already been elite.
So he gets the benefit of the doubt for now.
Just for the record
I would like to see what he can do with a solid team around him and another year under his belt. I think we owe him that. I think I get lumped into a category that i don’t want to be in. I don’t want Cassel cut and I don’t want him traded unless it’s for a major upgrade at QB.
I just call a spade a spade. Right now and through this season he has been a pretty bad QB in all areas. That said, he really isn’t bad statistically compared to a lot of other QB’s with his experience level.
Also his 84 yard passing game could have been a little better. the pass to Wade that he dropped would have put probably another 70 yrds to his stats.
So Cassel’s about 200 yd per game QB. That’s not as bad as it could be for a guy in his scenario. But he needs a lot of work. Playing at this level will not do it. So we’ll see eventually.

It's all on Pioli...
He’s the one that put the cart in front of the horse. What were the odds that this team/ staff would ruin Cassel going into this season? I gave it about 90%. Hopefully, what doesn’t kill him will make him sronger..ie..Troy Aikmen. If he plays bad this week, and they don’t go to Brodie, this staff will lose any credibility they had left with the team. Where is the competition?
