Talk Bills with Buffalo Rumblings...

... if you can stomach it. Some days, we can't.

Is there a less exciting game on the NFL Week 13 docket than Bills/Chiefs? Statistically speaking, there are a few that contend for the crown; the Bills and Chiefs have combined for 7 wins this season, a number featured in the Steelers/Browns, Jets/Buccaneers and Raiders/Redskins games. We're actually surpassed in this category by Titans/Rams, but hey - Chris Johnson and Vince Young are in that game.

Alas, NFL football is more exciting than most other sporting events, and this particular game holds some intrigue. I'm here to answer any questions y'all might have about the Buffalo Bills, and if my answers are not satisfactory, I'm sure several of my Buffalo Rumblings minions will set the record straight.

Best of luck this weekend. Stay healthy. And throw us a bone if you feel the urge.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Thanks man!

Rec it up guys! My question is what will the Chiefs have to do to win this game? And how has TO been so far in Buffalo?

by tomahawk44 on Dec 9, 2009 9:59 AM CST reply actions

To win: run the ball effectively, move the chains on third downs, and limit big plays to Owens and Evans. Fairly simple formula, which is why we’re 4-8. Oh, and don’t turn the ball over, either – but that’s true every week.

T.O. has been great. His numbers aren’t great, obviously, but don’t think for one second it’s because he’s lost any of his prodigious skill. The man turned 36 on Monday, and he’s still got the body of a 27-year-old, and the playmaking ability to boot. We’re lucky to see him in person. The man is a football genius. For all of his baggage, and not forgetting that he hasn’t helped our offense get better, Owens was a smart move for this organization, and it’s fun to watch him play.

How bad are the Bills?

What are your teams strengths/weaknesses on both sides of the ball?

Who’s starting at QB now? Hows the interim HC doing?

If you only knew...

by IISaiNtII on Dec 9, 2009 10:18 AM CST reply actions

We’re bad. As in BAD bad.

Worst run defense in the league, extraordinarily inconsistent quarterback play, and arguably the worst, most injury-depleted offensive line in the league.

But we’re fairly effective at forcing turnovers, keeping games close and making plays in the passing game. Don’t count us out.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is our starting QB. He’s… not good.

Perry Fewell’s done a little better than expected. He’s a high-energy, upbeat guy, and this extremely young Bills team has adopted his personality fairly quickly. They play hard for him, and he’s had some solid game plans (along with growing pains).

Geoff Hangartner, our center, is our most veteran player. He’s been in the league since 2005. So has Jonathan Scott, our de facto LT. Kendall Simmons, our new right guard, is a veteran as well. Kirk Chambers has been around a couple of years. The only rookie left is Andy Levitre at left guard.

We’ve gotten more experienced as we’ve filled in injured spots with vet depth, but none of these guys (Scott, Simmons, Chambers) are NFL-caliber players.

Who's your starting TE?

and more importantly, when we leave him wide open in the middle of the field all day long will he be able to catch the ball?

Second, am I remembering right that your LB core was wiped out by injuries? Is that why the run D has struggled so much?

Shawn Nelson is our starting tight end, and I sincerely hope you do leave him wide open, because the rook has been dying for a break-out performance.

And yes – the LB injuries are the biggest reason why the run D has struggled so much. Paul Posluszny is our only day one starter still in the lineup, and even he has missed time. Of our other two starters, Chris Draft started the season off as a UFA and Bryan Scott was our opening-day starter at SS.

Thank's a ton for taking the time Brian

2 questions:

1) The Trent Edwards benching seemed odd to me considering the other problems on O. (Line..lack of run gane etc) and they weren’t exactly replacing him with a QB of the future type. Did his play really warrant the benching or was he scapegoated?

2) I understand the play of Jackson is what elevated him to starter, but are there things we don’t know about Lynch (attitude etc) that may have contributed to his benching?

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Dec 9, 2009 12:04 PM CST reply actions

Trent deserved to be benched. He was bad. That’s not to say he wasn’t scapegoated a little bit, but it’s mostly a function of bad play. The organization has completely lost faith in him.

Lynch wasn’t benched. The Bills regularly use both backs, they’re just now using Jackson more, and it’s purely because his play warranted it.

Are the issues in Buffalo staff related? Without Turk “I know the Cincinnati No Huddle” Schonert calling bad plays, the team looks like they’ve got a solid staff on paper.

Haven’t had the opportunity to find out yet, because we’ve been so banged up at corner that Whitner has been playing nickel CB, with Byrd and Wilson playing S.

Byrd is banged up too, so my guess is that when McGee gets back in the lineup full-time (this week, probably), Byrd will be a situational safety and play on passing downs, with Whitner and George Wilson playing FS/SS respectively on run downs.

Robert Ayers is a Bronco.

Aaron Maybin is a defensive end.

Posluszny is playing out of position. He needs to be outside in a 4-3, and he doesn’t fit well at all in a 3-4. McClain is scheme versatile, a phenomenal athletic talent, and the true anchor of Alabama’s D. He’d be an awesome pick for us – but that doesn’t make him the best pick now or on draft day.

Are you still pissed that Wade Philips played Rob Johnson instead of Flutie in the "Music City Mircle"?

IMO that was the worst coaching decision in the history of sports. Flutie takes you to the playoffs, rests him in week 17 where Rob Johnson has a good week and then starts Johnon in the playoffs?!?!?!!?!?

I might have my facts screwed up but IMO there is no “music city miracle” if Flutie plays in that game.

He was a late first rounder so his contract isn’t a whole lot to stomach (pun intended). If he has a problem with being traded he’s never said it publicly and he has a new DL coach this year so at least he’s not working with the same coach he was working with. I think he has one year left on his deal next year but like Brian I don’t believe he survives a regime change (though I didn’t think he would be on the team this year either). The Bills will likely draft someone to replace him even if they stay in a 4-3.

Where is Lynch and his "beast mode".

I know that Lynch was suspended for the first 4 games and Jackson has seized his opportunity during that time period. It appears that Jackson rushing yards have dropped a bit since his first 4-6 games. Why does it appear that Lynch is not running with the same passion?

Is Jackson the future in Buffalo?

Do you see T.O. getting re-signed?

by casselreadychiefs on Dec 9, 2009 2:29 PM CST reply actions

Lynch was suspended for the first 3 games. Jackson earned his top-RB reps not because he’s better, but because he was able to adjust to the Bills’ offensive line and produce behind it faster (and now more frequently) than Lynch did.

Jackson’s 28. He doesn’t have a lot of wear and tear on the tires, but he’s 28. Does there have to be a “future” at RB? It’s the easiest-to-replace position on a football field. That’s why y’all could get away with cutting LJ.

I don’t see TO getting re-signed, only because a) he’ll get offers from contenders and b) a new GM/coach is unlikely to want to build around him.

Pittsburg is basically my hometown.

I can’t believe how fast the student body turned on him, and then the DUI didn’t do him any favors.

It just seemed like he had a general disrespect for everyone. I’m not saying that was really the case, but his comments always involved himself and his records and that irritated a lot of people around here.

Are you also from Pittsburg?

My discontent with Broyles started the year they set the scoring records. I guess its hard to argue with what they did, but if you ask me he put to much on Philpot, he should have been spreading it out more. And now that his talent has suffered a little his playcalling is very predictable.

I am also a firm believer that his Championship was nearly entirely because of Dennis Franchione. Kind of like how Coker won a title in Miami with Butch Davis’ work.

I’m from Pittsburg. Hopefully Beck gets things turned around. He’s already mentioned some things about extending the recruiting and rebuilding the defense which are good things to hear from a coach.

As an update, my usual 45-minute commute from day job to residence took me 3 hours tonight. Snow so deep on the roads that my vehicle plowed under, and snow flew up onto my windshield. I literally had to stop in the middle of the road and brush my car off. Several times.

Now that I’m home, I’m doing three things: prepping for a power outage, counting my blessings and KILLING several beers.

First of all....thanks for being here and doing this!

As the year has progressed we keep hearing teams scheming for our OLB Tamba Hali, and he had his best game of the year in my opinion last week, one of our few bright spots. 2 forced fumbles and 3 sacks a believe.

Question is, what answers does buffalo have for him, or is he going to be in the QB’s lap all game?

BTW…..I had a nightmare last night, it was Mike Brown repeatedly taking a bad angle because he is slower than he realizes and TO scoring touchdown after touchdown……yeesh.

by Zimmy on Dec 9, 2009 5:21 PM CST reply actions

I like your nightmare. But Hali can affect that coming to fruition, because Buffalo doesn’t really have an answer for a good, solid pass rusher. Our O-Line is a mess.

Do they every chip with a RB or toss an extra tight end to chip?

Yes. It rarely works.

Has your offense changed since Jauron got sacked?

From what I’ve seen in the game highlights it seems like they’re throwing the ball downfield more and connecting. Is your new QB starting to get his timing with the receivers?

Nope. That’s the thing about in-season firings – things don’t really change, they just appear to. Same team, same problems, slightly different way of trying to mask those problems. That’s all.

The change Big Chief may be seeing is Ryan Fitzpatrick. The same week Jauron got fired he had benched Trent Edwards. TE won’t throwi t down the field as much as Fitz. That’s a big change in philosophy without having anything to do with the coach.

Whats the deal with the QB situation in Buffalo...

I thought Edwards was suppose to be good, and why has Fitzpatrick been playing, whats the early prognosis on Brohm?

I thought Edwards was suppose to be good,

So did we.

Brohm has taken scout team reps. He’ll be in training camp next year to compete for a spot on the new coach’s team.

Yikes. We make 3rd string receivers look really good, so this should be a big yardage day for both teams.

Couple of questions...

If you already got these questions just disregard them. I haven’t looked through this whole post yet.

1. When do the Bills get to the Super Bowl? Next year, Five years…?

2. What has been your biggest surprise good or bad this year?

3. If you could have any Chief player who would it be and why?

Thanks!

I wonder how good of a team it would be if we made a team from the Chiefs and Bills best player

We could call the team the “CHILLS” i think we could get a one game improvement

Being a Kansas graduate,

I’m a fan of Derek Fine. What’s led to him being on IR, and what kind of fuue, if any, do you see him having in Buffalo?

by Dan Holmes on Dec 11, 2009 1:53 PM CST reply actions

With Fine it wasn’t a “OMG his knee just got destroyed” or a rolled up situation. We didn’t see anything during a game that said his knee was injured. The Bills were particularly thin at TE at the time so it must have been serious for them to put him on IR.

His future on the Bills is as a blocking TE. That’s his strong suit. They have two guys, Derek Schouman and Derek Fine, who are that kind of solid backup type. Fine probably won’t ever start in the league but he certainly could have a role going forward. The other Bills TE is the recently drafted Shawn Nelson from So. Miss. who is more of a pass-catching option and then marginal NFL talent Jonathan Stupar and Joe Klopfenstein who were both brought to the active roster after the Dereks’ injuries.
