Chiefs RB Castille Moves Up In Latest Depth Chart

Last week at this time, the Kansas City Chiefs sported three running backs on their depth chart: Jamaal Charles, Kolby Smith and Dantrell Savage.

With Smith now on IR and Savage missing the Denver Broncos game with an injury, here's how the Chiefs backs stack up:

Jamaal Charles, Tim Castille and Dantrell Savage.

Castille has only been on the team for a few weeks but contributed yesterday. He had three carries for 26 yards and one reception for eight yards.  He was moved into the Chiefs offense pretty quickly.

Other depth chart changes are minor.

One other minor change comes at punt returner.  With Savage injured, Quinten Lawrence is now listed as the No. 2 punt returner.

Lawrence had six kick returns for an average of 21 yards yesterday.

another bad decision by Haley....

Charles runs one back against the Steelers…..Haleys brings in a new KR the nest week…..genius!

hes trying to keep Charles from getting hurt

which almost happened on a kick return yesterday. Dont you remember him coming off limping?

agreed

having your starting RB and offensive playmaker as the primary KR is flirting with disaster

Yep

Pretty much. Can’t argue with that decision.

18 carries is fine

but adding KR duties is a big injury risk

but just when it starts working....they change it....thats all im saying

so we are giving up good field position to go with a rookie straight off the practice squad

you dont take the ball out of your playmakers hands either....

this team is not good enough to have to go on 80 yrd drives.

by KCinAZ on Dec 7, 2009 6:11 PM CST up reply actions

I hear ya

I strongly prefer him at KR as well

BUT, I also don’t want to see him get hurt, and have to have Castille and Williams as the only healthy RBs

Yeah

I learned my lesson after Dante Hall. As his snaps at WR went up, his effectiveness at KR went down.

Percy Harvin's returning kicks.

I think NE regularly employs starting players on offense returning kicks. It’s actually more common than one might think. Seems like the best teams are often unafraid to risk their best players, because ST can be a way to REALLY make a difference with a single individual effort on one or two plays.

yeah, but

name a STARTING RB that returns kicks…

it’s always a WR, CB, S or 3rd down RB… never a featured back

It's pretty rare. Did Marcus return kicks early in his career?

by hmills110 on Dec 7, 2009 11:35 PM CST up reply actions

Don't forget Wes Welker

who still routinely returns punts for NE, and if I’m not mistaken is leading the NFL in receptions and is only 5 yards short of leading in yards (Moss).

I think Dante Hall’s decline was due to age and wear. I don’t buy the “his increase in work at WR caused him to get worse as a KR/WR”. He caught as many if not more passes during his most productive return years than toward the end of his stay in KC. In 2003, when he set the record with 4 return TD’s, he had 40 receptions – a career high.

I do agree that your primary RB should not be your default KR/PR. Any exception I would give Charles for being an outstanding KR I would almost immediately negate with ball security issues and injury concern.

by Ochophosphate on Dec 8, 2009 1:43 AM CST up reply actions

It looks like they have determined that around 25 touches is the right amount for JC

Along with the 18 carries you have to add all the time we throw to him. I think that is why you still see him in KR duties at times is because if his offensive touches are low, they can also give him a few KR touches.

I think 25 is about the right number for Charles. Having him around week to week is more important than giving him 35 touches one week and not having him around the next week.

by vincent2668 on Dec 7, 2009 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

I understand the injury aspect of replacing him at KR...

but the timing of it was just nuts…..and to replace him with a rookie practice squad player?..

by KCinAZ on Dec 7, 2009 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

they did draft Lawrence with the intent to return kick is what I thought?

I get what you are saying though and I havent been impressed with him at all…

by tomahawk44 on Dec 7, 2009 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

Lets assume that they can't have JC return all the kicks

I don’t know who else would be better at it. I think QL is terrible at it also. But, what is your other option? I guess it would be B. Wade. But, I think he is just about as bad as QL at returning kick offs. I would like to see if Long could do it. But, I think it is also an test to see if QL can have some success at it.

This is just part of the problem of not being a deep team and having depth and talent at various positions.

by vincent2668 on Dec 7, 2009 6:22 PM CST up reply actions

Lawrence/Long

You HAVE to have speed/quickness at KR which eliminates Wade.

Lawrence was drafted with returns in mind, and he DOES have the speed… but he does have a lot to learn as well.

I think Long could do it… or at least take over the PR job from Wade at some point

by stagdsp on Dec 7, 2009 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with that.

My problem with Lawrence is that he doesn’t seem to have any quick cutting ability on the KR. Seems to just run as fast as he can into the pile of blockers. But, I agree he is young and learning.
I would like to see Long do PR as well. At least see what he can do. But, for all I know…they may have given him that chance in practice and he sucks at it or puts the ball on the ground?

by vincent2668 on Dec 7, 2009 6:30 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.....

i guess at this point in the season, for me, “If it aint broke, dont fix it”…

I dont think that a back that is averaging less than 20 carries a game, and will never be an every down back, that you should be concerned about injury. He gives us the best chance to get good field position for an offense that struggles to gain yards.

Lawrence is fast, but he has no wiggle or juke in him. Im not impressed…and this team needs every advantage they can get. Charles can get just as hurt coming out of the backfield when that piece of shit O line we have lets three defenders go by untouched…..just my 2 opinion

by KCinAZ on Dec 7, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

I think the another thing is

As much as they say that they are trying to win games at all cost…
They are also using this season as an audition for various positions. As the post above states…they did draft QL as a KR guy. So, this is the time to see if he can do it or if he has potiental to get better. If you determine this year that he can’t. Then you are not wasting a roster spot on the guy next year.

by vincent2668 on Dec 7, 2009 6:34 PM CST up reply actions

im just pissed off in general...that game yesterday really got to me

the product they are putting on the field is not acceptable to me….to me, the one competitive edge we have is Charles, and they are limiting him.

by KCinAZ on Dec 7, 2009 6:37 PM CST up reply actions

vincent... you're on to something there

Quinten Lawrence made his FIRST regular season catch last Sunday.

Got THAT monkey off his back. I don’t think he’d be on the field, though, if it weren’t for a semi-rash of IRs.

I tend to see it like KCinAZ, with regard to Lawrence making true “football moves.” I think Haley still sees him as salvageable/trainable, with great upside. Myself, based only on highlight reels, it looked to me like Washington has plenty of speed to do the job, and better field vision and ability to see where the home run (or at least the best next move in that direction) is. I was kind of hoping and expecting Washington to assert himself, somewhat, and show off some athleticism. But the kid came out early, due to eligibility problems, rather than because he was a sure thing. Maybe he just needs to come along slowly, and protect him in the meantime.

I would love if we could get a DB that could return Kick or punts

I guess it’s most likely 6 to one and half dozen to another, but I tend to think of it as a bonus when you can have a nickle back or backup DB that can handle your KR and PR duties. It’s nice not to have to waste a WR or RB spot just for a guy that handles KR or PR duties. Unless he is something special like D. Hall was.

Javier Arenas, CB Alabama

should be available in the 3rd round when KC picks

IF they haven’t taken a CB by that point, this could kill 2 birds…

His first couple games, he was knockin' himself silly through overaggression/eagerness.

He might be his own worst enemy and be a concussion waiting to happen as a KR, right now. I get the sense that he’s trying so hard, he’s a LITTLE bit outta control.

he should take over for Cox.....

I think Castille has the “bruiser” mentality we need at FB. He just looked like he wanted to smack the first person he could. I definitely want to see what he can do with the ball in short-yardage situations…….(no more sweeps on the goal line please).

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 7, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

Not only that, but just as a true fullback leading the way with authority, which Cox doesn't do, IMO.

Yes. Castille looks like a respectable all-around 'back.

Just the kind of excellent player who can fall to you for cheap, because other teams are looking for Ferraris. Seems like I’ve seen him perform every function in the job description at a good-to-excellent level. I’ve seen Cox catch the ball well, but that’s about it. Wonder how quickly Castille’s learning the playbook. Oh. He should already know ‘most all of it, after 2 years in AZ. No wonder he seems so confident outta the gate. Despite limited action, he probably knows more of Haley’s playbook and philosophy than Cox, Charles, and Savage, combined.

AZ NEVER handed him the ball ONCE. Threw him a handful of passes is all. A 4.8 ypc in KC in limited action is statistically NADA. That’s barely enough for the opposition to get any film on him at all. I’d like to see some more 2-back personnel groupings, especially since you can slide Charles over to flanker, and still have a solid all-around back in there.

Charles needs a break

So why not put in a full house with Cox, Castille, Williams in short yardage? I was impressed with castille. However, he should not let linebackers or limeman bear hug him, get down. Run low and keep the feet moving.Give him more carries, three times is not enough carries.

From the outside looking in

Mo Carthon is doing pretty good with our backs.. Still no reason to make him the OC though.. Anyone else here that Weis wants to OC for Chicago?? Crazy stuff…

a) Weis will go to Cleveland
b) UC was right about Carthon
c) Charles will rush for 1000 in 2010
d) 2.7 will make an AFC championship appearance
