Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

The Chiefs are about to enter the last quarter of their season and it’s in everybody’s best interests that they finish out the campaign on a strong note. The first quarter ended with a 0-4 mark, the second quarter at 1-3 tally and the third wrapped up with a 2-2 count. So far, an improvement in numbers is there. However, emotionally we’re no better than when we started. That’s the real issue.

Actually

if we lose to Buffalo or Clevand…we’re worse than when where we started.

Welcome to Chiefs REBUILD - Version 2.0 /The Clark Hunt Edition
Chiefs will be lucky to go 4-12 in 2010

Well, Buffalo DID hang 54 on Herm's boys at Arrowhead last year around this time.

Anything’s possible.

We need to be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day and we already have a better record after dumping half of Herm's team. That should be plenty telling. In a year or two we WILL be AFC West leaders.

BTW, Tom Brady will have to win out to match Cassel's record last year. Cassel has no talent to work with. Receivers aren't open, and when they are, they drop passes or run routes incorrectly. He may hold onto the ball too long but good game managing and mature QB's do just that. I'd take a 4 yard loss on a sack than forcing a ball into the hands of the other team. Imagine your hatred if he threw 20INT's in 11 games like Cutler. Give him some time to prove he was worth that AVERAGE NFL contract....

I can live with Jamaal Charles fumbling one more time (barely); I can understand that the jitters got to Matt Cassel (forcefully); I’m aware that Todd Haley still hasn’t developed a knack to pull the successful gimmicks (mercifully), and I completely realize that this team is in a rebuilding mode (realistically). But the thing that I cannot get is how on earth the Chiefs could possibly lay such an enormous egg on Derrick Thomas’ day?

Behind his contagious smile and the need to create havoc on the football field, the thing that moved Derrick Thomas was pride. This was his last hurrah, his posthumous swan song and his closing tribute all rolled into one. Without a doubt, the Chiefs were required to put together a performance worthy of everything he ever gave to Kansas City.

The end result was unacceptable.

Bob is exactly right. What those guys went out there and did yesterday was entirely unacceptable.

by JacinB on Dec 7, 2009 4:19 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Yep.

Aside from Hali each and every one of the Chiefs players (Jamaal included) need to look long and hard in a mirror. This was unacceptable.

November 22nd 2009: Chiefs win in OT vs the Steelers 27-24. This could be the turning point for the Chiefs to get back to being respected.

and...

Colquitt, Succop, the OL, and Jamaal Charles / Mike Brown (at times)

those guys also played pretty well

If all it took to guarantee a win was to have an emotional halftime ceremony, that's all you'd get every Sunday.

What happened was what happened. They honestly tried to win and were clearly beaten. Maybe if Denver had laid down in DT’s honor, but how would that honor his memory?

Seems to me that 90% of the time ANY team has one of those ceremonies, their team loses.

that's what I've been saying

from 0-4, to 1-3, to 2-2…

finish 2-2 or 3-1 in the 4th quarter, and it’ll show progress

I don't know how you can call it progress

By that definition, the 2008 Chiefs showed progress in week 13 by beating Oakland because they hadn’t won the previous 7 games.

You can artificially juggle the numbers however you want. The on the field performance is pitiful. The Steelers game was clearly a fluke. The other wins were hardly impressive.

I’ve yet to see anyone point to anything happening on the field that shows real improvment. In fact its seriously regressing.

by ChiefDJ on Dec 7, 2009 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

The Steelers lost to Oakland

I dont think that is a fluke we beat them.

agreed...

Steelers have been playing pretty poorly.

But, I still think it was a quality win for KC… as ANY win is a quality win.

They just lost two in a row to teams playing VERY well at the moment.
It happens.

If they lose to Buffalo and Cleveland, it’s a bad sign… but I don’t think these two losses represent a trend of getting worse, or a season that’s been a total waste…

they were 2 bad losses to good teams. that’s it

Both Cleveland and Buffalo play well in spots, as do the Chiefs.

At this point, expectations should be realistically low enough that we don’t EXPECT KC to win ANY thing, nor should be surprised if they DO beat both Buffalo and Cleveland. And, quite frankly, there WERE some matchups that were in KC’s favor versus Denver, and they may give the Donkeys quite a tussle to close out the season at Invesco.

I call 3 wins progress over 2 wins. period.

You forget how good everyone felt after the Steelers win, which came after another win…

Yes, these last two games were terrible… but it doesn’t make the entire season a failure.

I’m not juggling any numbers… they HAVE won 2 out of their last 4 games. period.
they HAVE won more games than last year.

Bad games happen, especially to teams that are rebuilding. The Chiefs clearly had 2 bad games in a row… but there are improvements on the field…

the OL looks better
Charles is making plays, and is clearly an improvement over LJ
special teams have been solid all year, for the most part
Hali has done nothing but get better
Flowers is playing well
Chambers is clearly an improvement, and I belive Long is too
I believe Haley’s playcalling is getting better

Haley/Long

What makes you think Haley’s playcalling has improved and Long is an improvement compared to what?

Jerome

by easyjb on Dec 7, 2009 6:12 PM CST up reply actions

Haley/Long...

well… I think the run/pass mix is getting better, and I like the trick plays thrown in there… generally, I don’t find myself saying “wtf” on very many play CALLS anymore… though I do say “wtf” about the EXECUTION of those calls quite often :)

Long is a quicker and better slot receiver than anyone KC had last year, and over Engram/Wade this year. He has a ton of potential, and is a very hard worker… his numbers haven’t been impressive yet, but I like him as a player

Me, too. And he's drawing a bit of a crowd in coverage, to my eye.

3 wins just means the other team played crappier than we did

Look at the stats in those games. They are just as bad as the losses.

All of your “improvments” are subjective and not based on hard fact. Is Charles better than LJ? Yes. Why the hell did it take them so long to play him? He could have been making those plays all year.

Is the O-line really better? Or is Charles ability to make people miss what is getting him running yards and with him in there defenses have to respect the run and thus can’t be blitzing 3 linebackers every play?

Long is the Bobby Sippio of this year. Not since Sippio have I seen so much made out of so little production on the field.

Haley’s playcalling is getting better? A fake punt from our own 29 yard line when we were only down by one score begs to differ.

I’m happy that you can stay so optimistic and continue seeing the bright side of things Stag. I just don’t see it. The things you call improvments are so slight as to be non existent. Seems like grasping for straws to me.

It seems to ME like you are “grasping for straws” to find everything negative and doomsday talk about players and the team as a whole.

I’m coming from a place of low expectations this season (after … I didn’t expect to win more than 6ish games this year. they have won 3… and should have won 2 others… which would have put us at 5 right now… with wins against cleveland and buffalo, 7-9 was doable… now, 5-11 is doable)

I’m being realistic about the things that need improvement (and there are plenty)… but I’m NOT willing to say “this whole team sucks” and “everyone needs replaced” etc.

But by your thinking

Last years team was a playoff team. They lost 7 games by less than a touchdown. Should they get credit for close games they lost? Clearly not.

I’m not TRYING to see everything in a negative light. It simply is what it is.

Our defense is giving up 400 yards a game. Yes, we are switching to the 3-4 this year, but so is Denver and they have one of the top defenses in the league.

Yeah, we have more sacks this year than last. We’re still 31st in the league with 17. The league leader in sacks has 23 MORE sacks than we do. More than double.

We have the 30th ranked offense and our “franchise” QB is shell shocked and regressing from being hit so many times. (We’re 31st in the league in sacks given).

Our head coach would rather do his OLD job of being an offensive coordinator than take care of his head coaching responsibilities and makes unforgivable game managment decisions.

So with all that, you think we should be excited about the “improvment” of our bottom of the league offense and defense.

I don’t have to grasp for straws to find negatives or doomsday. That is what it is. We are just as bad if not worse than we were last year. Gaileys gimmick college offense was better than what we are seeing this year.

Again, glad you are still enjoying it, but this team is bordering on unwatchable. Seriously.

by ChiefDJ on Dec 7, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not giving credit for close games

just making a point that you have to temper expectations.

no one seriously thought this team was going to make the playoffs this year… but it’s a little shortsighted to say there is “no” improvement or that things are “worse” than last year… IMO, small improvements are still improvements!

and I’m not asking anyone to be “excited”
IF you think the games are unwatchable… don’t watch them, that’s your right.

your opinions are yours, I disagree with them… but that’s ok.

I'd have to require a full on ass whooping though.

No more close games. This team needs to thoroughly thrash a team to tell me that they’re improving.

that game wasn't really a blowout

we definitely outplayed them but I’m talking about 42-7 type of blowout. Was it a few years ago against the niners?

by jonnyu on Dec 7, 2009 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

So if we follow the pattern.....

We’ll finish 3-1. Sweet. It’s going to take at least that to get the nasty taste of this last loss out of my mouth. I will accept no less than 3 wins to make up for this last loss, on a day when Derrick Freaking Thomas was given his final tribute for his time in KC.
