Chiefs Dropped by Denver; Lose 44-13

Joel is on his way to the locker room as we speak in order to his best to dissect this atrocious loss. Make sure you tweet him your questions to @ArrowheadPride.

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost ten straight games in December, almost completely draining the Arrowhead Advantage late in the season. The Broncos ran all over the Chiefs today, finishing the day with over 200 yards on the ground.

This was a tough game to watch on pretty much every front. We'll have much more for you later but for now, here are some thoughts:

The Good

  • The Chiefs started off hot on third downs, converting four of their first five.
  • A punt by Dustin Colquitt late in the third quarter pinned the Broncos within the five-yard line.
  • Tamba Hali had back to back sacks in the first half and the second one was a strip which Glenn Dorsey recovered. Hali also hit Kyle Orton near the goal line late in the third quarter and Dorsey recovered the fumble again.
  • Jamaal Charles had a rushing TD again today, both his and the team's third of the season.
  • Brodie Croyle has a much better arm than Matt Cassel.  Don't know if that's good or bad actually.

The Bad

  • The Chiefs couldn't stop the run in the first half. The Broncos had 131 yards rushing in the first two periods.
  • The Brodie Croyle appearance at the end of the third quarter. Not Croyle's play but the fact that Todd Haley made a decision to replace our starting QB with one full quarter to go was a terrible sign of how bad it was out there.
  • Quinten Lawrence? Bobby Wade? Neither one is very good or very fast.

The Ugly

  • Jovan Belcher, how do you not block that punt in the third quarter? It was actually harder to do what you did - miss the ball entirely - than to actually block the punt.
  • Jamaal Charles fumbled in the third quarter and the Broncos took it to the house for six.
  • Seven drops by the Chiefs in the first half. Seven. Bobby Wade had five for the entire game I believe.
  • Matt Cassel was 10/29 passing for 84 yards. He had two INTs and a 14.3 QB rating.
  • The Chiefs allowed 20 points in the third quarter. The game was over before the fourth quarter started.

Chime in with your thoughts.

BUT BRODIE ORCHESTRATED A TD DRIVE!!!

I'm not a "Brodie guy"

But it is obvious that he has a much stronger arm than Cassel.
In no way does this endorse him as a better QB, just an observation.

I'll say this much

I think Cassel played his way out of a start next week with his last two performances.

That's true

Jeff George had a much stronger arm than Montana, but that didn’t mean anything.

Who cares?

He should get a chance to play. Cassel has been TERRIBLE and you never know. Maybe he will be better after sitting on the bench for a while.

He didn't look any better than Cassel on a whole...

Small sample size with back up receivers, but man… Poor effort all the way around.

I'm not a Brodie guy either

but Matt C should sit for a bit. Croyle CANNOT be much worse. Let’s see what we have in our O-line and WRs with a different look behond center. Seriously, could Croyle have lost worse than Matty C today?

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

Who cares...

Cassel is more than likely going to be the guy next year, might as well give him more snaps to learn the system and get familiar with his receivers.

Really?

How can you logically even make a statement to say that he wont start next year?

The point is discussion

You state your point, I state mine ,and we discuss. These forums really are pointless though if you think about it. We can’t change a thing, we just yap about what we think the team should do better/differently.

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

Learn the system maybe...get familiar with the receivers - How do you know?

System- All have been talking about us bringing in a O-coordinator next year. Doesn’t that mean that the system is going to be different? May be similar but there is alway change with a new OC.

WR – I think we have shown that we will change WRs at the drop of a hat. It’s not like we have a core group of future WRs here that we are going to build around. So, I don’t see that being something that be accomplished this year.

Take away the dropped passes and his numbers weren't that bad

We had at least 10 dropped passes that hit the receivers hands. The INTs were both communication errors — the WR and QB weren’t on the same page.

As usual, he was under constant pressure and had to force some throws.

Dropped passes plagued both Cassel and Croyle.

by Nick Britt on Dec 6, 2009 3:17 PM CST up reply actions

The Goodman Int

Was NOT a communication error. Long was open, all Cassel had to do was put some air under the ball. Instead he threw a laser. Cassel needs to learn how to put some touch on the ball.

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

not a good day, but clearly not ALL on Cassel

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"

by stagdsp on Dec 6, 2009 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

Not all

but this game confirmed what I’ve believed all along. Cassel hasn’t started since high school for a reason. He’s a great leader/locker room guy, but he’s a second string QB. He had a lot of drops because he doesn’t throw an easily catchable ball. All he does is throw lasers, he doesn’t put enough air under deep passes, and he has a tendency to throw behind receivers on short/intermediate routes.

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Excuses

Yes, he played behind good qb’s, but he was still behind them for a reason. Me, I’d rather have the Heisman winners and MVP’s.

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

well dur...

But he was behind 2 of the greatest QB’s in the history of USC… Not many guys would force themselves ahead of them. And then really no QB’s would even get the chance to play behind Brady… And when he did he made the most of it. Really poor argument.

The Original member of the Ndamukong Suh bandwagon

by averagegatsby on Dec 6, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

How did he make the most of it?!!

His stats were very mediocre last year!! He turns the ball over and gets sacked a ton. His career completion percentage sucks too!

All I am saying is that Matt C hasn’t shown me anything that says he is better than a good backup/second tier starter.

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

Uh, yeah...

TB has all ready thrown more TDs this year than Matt C did all of last year, almost twice as many yards as MC this year, and his QB rating is over 20 points better. Come on man!

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

PistolP

Most of the WR routes in this offenseare “option” routes where the WR reads the defense and his route can go one of two or three ways. That is what happened on the Lance Long route. Cassel expected him to break off a hitch and Long went for the long route.

Drops WERE the problem. The drops were routine catches. You get a hand on the football you can catch it. No excuse for that many dropped passes.

by Nick Britt on Dec 6, 2009 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

Nick

I don’t disagree with the option routes, but I do disagree with the routine catches. No doubt, some were easier than others, but several passes including the deep ball to Wade were poorly thrown. Matt C doesnt put any kind of touch on the ball. Had he put just a little bit of air under the deep ball, Wade would have made the catch. Matt throw’s lasers all the time. He also likes to throw behind guys like the JC touchdown miss. Had he led JC or even thrown it to his body, it would have been a TD. Yes, great receivers make up for bad passes. We don’t have great receivers. Matt HAS to throw a better ball than he does. We can disagree, it’s all good. I don’t buy the, “if you can get one hand on the ball, it should be a catch.” If you can get two on the ball if should be a catch.

by PistolP on Dec 6, 2009 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

I guess we will agree to disagree

If you are a receiver at the NFL level, you should make those catches, IMO. And I think that is fair.

by Nick Britt on Dec 6, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Ridiculous

Every QB has dropped passes. It wasn’t like he was hitting guys right in the numbers. The passes weren’t perfect by any means.

It was an ASININE CALL

Haley continues to make pathetic decisions.

We were only down by 8 at that point in the game. I don’t care how pretty the play was drawn up. To call a fake punt from your own 40 (?) at the beginning of the 3rd quarter is what led to us getting blown out.

Haley is reckless and inconsistent on when he decides to gamble. Doesn’t go for it on 4th and 1 at the end of the half but goes for the fake punt at the beginning of the 3rd quarter on his own side of the field.

Haley needs to grow up on his play calling.

Give me a break

You might buy all of Haley’s rah rah B.S. I don’t.

He makes bad, unnecessarily risky plays that this team has no ability to recover from.

He wants to pull that play, he should wait until they are in no mans land on the other teams 45 yard line or something. Not when they put the other team in field goal position immediately because of a low percentage pass (you’re expecting a cold QB off the bench to come in and throw a 20 yard pass to your long snapper? come on).

Its hard for the players to find things to build on when their coach continues to sabotage them.

Anything good is still bad.

Cassel had time to make some throws, but there was no one to throw too. When he could throw to someone the inevitably dropped the damnm ball. I was fading in and out in the third quarter between turnovers.

All in all this was just miserable. Trying to not have a knee jerk reaction, but this was very

New influx of talent would help.

Maybe a less risk-reward based defensive scheme, that adapts to game situations…additional talent at wideout…continued growth/add’l talent on the O-line…anyone who can tackle consistently at ILB…speed/tackling skill at safety…

If there was a franchise type QB sitting out there

I would say give it consideration. But, if the solution for those that don’t wan’t Cassel is to put Brodie in and let him be the future of the team, I don’t think that’s the answer for the future. I do believe that Pioli is the type that will always look for a franchise QB. If he believes that Cassel isn’t the man to lead the team, I think he will replace him regardless of the contract that was given. But, he’s not going to do it after 1 year.

That requires playing with discipline and sound technique every down instead of just throwing the kitchen sink out there.

Chiefs need playmakers and a run defense

Seriously the Broncos ripped off runs at a clip of 6+ every friggin time. Our run defense was and still is pathetic. You can’t win with that type of defense. Our linebackers looked horrendous and our D-linemen were pushed off the ball 3-4 yds on most snaps. We need to draft up the gut on offense and defense this year. NT, MLB, S and C, RG, RB. We need to build a core to this team. It’s our teams biggest weakness.

Cassel had no one to throw to and Champ covered Chambers all over the field. Wade, Long, Pope, Cottam these guys are scrubs and are Cassel’s only outlets and none of these guys could catch worth a shit.

Cassel certainly played poorly but of the 9 passes dropped today, 5 or 6 of them should have been caught for sure. Wade had his worst game as a Chief. He made it so I don’t want him on the roster next year. He might be the slowest and worst punt returner i’ve seen also.

Java Williams is a north and south runner I’m not sure why they tried to run him stretch the to times he touched the ball.

This team needs talent in the off-season. At this point a higher draft position the better. I’d like players to continue to develop and for the team to win another game or 2 on the year but this team needs minimum 8 starters and a total of minimum 17 new players on the team in 2010.

Chiefs may have fallen back to drafting in the top 5 with this pathetic outing.

Oakland has loads of talent...

Jamarcus is just that bad. And a Steelers team without Pallumalo really isn’t a Steelers team. Helps that Roethelsberger got hurt too.

Don't worry if your team picks before Oakland

Al Davis will just take a guy with a great 40 time that 31 other NFL teams recognize as being a mediocre player.

wow!

by Arrowhead Alec on Dec 6, 2009 4:16 PM CST reply actions

So that's a pre-emptive

‘STOP praising LONG’?

Let’s break this down so you can understand it. The Chiefs are a bad, slow, talent poor team and Quinten can’t get off the bench enough to even think about dropping more then one pass a game that comes his way.

Quinten’s only redeeming feature is that he’s ‘fast’, but it’s not showing up in game, so there’s no reason to have him around.

The Kansas City Chief's 2009 record will be 5-11.

by Druful on Dec 6, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

good one

hes a ROOKIE, he caught the pass that came to him, and hes giving a great effort, the other pass was to high. Long isnt the problem i just think he isnt much better now WADE doesnt like to catch, he got past the 20 each time with barely any blocking, he isnt charles but i like him returning and not Wade!

by Arrowhead Alec on Dec 6, 2009 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

Meh

even as a rookie, if he had any sort of talent, he’d be starting, especially with Bowe out.

I've got time to throw...wait...hmm?

The game as a whole was down right ugly if not one of the ugliest thus far in years for me personally. What I am most frustrated with in this game other then the wide receivers not catching the ball (Wade who missed numerous times, but we gave him a shot 3-4 more times in a row ??) was the amount of time that Cassel had pretty good decent time to throw the ball! I saw yet again Cassel not checking down and holding onto the ball too long. Difference this game was he actually had time to do check downs and get rid of the ball, but didn’t. Made me question him for the first time this season. What I have been wanting to see all year was a good pass protection and in my opinion got it, but to what avail? Nothing!! Cassel needs in my opinion especially when the pass protection is their (which granted hasn’t been a whole lot this year) do some check downs! I also notice a lot from him when the slightest of pressure is there he loses pocket awareness. Even in todays game I saw that 3 times. I understand that being sacked as much as he has that it might get overwhelming at times and your first tendency is to scramble out.. but come on.. where is the confidence? Very upset with Cassel and the offense as a whole, but more him as I do see some progress being made by our 0-Line. Defensive wise… Amazing what PRESSURE can do.. (need to do more of it)!!

QBs can get better about pulling the trigger. Will he? I don’t know. But there’s no reason at this point to completely give up on the guy.

Give me a freaking break....please!

Cassel sucks really, really, really bad! Did I make my point? When a QB plays that bad, it’s NOT because they are having a bad day. It’s because they suck! Good QBs don’t have days like MC has had the last 2 Sundays. It may be hard for you to admit but, we have a really shitty QB and the worst part is, we are stuck with him for AT LEAST 3 seasons.

All this “give him time” shit is old. He has had 3 quarters of a season to show us whether or not he is a player. We have learned and he is not. Our top ten pick should be used on a QB this year. I am DONE with Matt Cassel.

This team is an embarrassment

When the protection was actually good today, Cassel can’t find an open WR and when they were open they dropped them.

The run D was putrid. Plus no matter the personnel on either side of the ball, the Broncos offense makes our D look silly… we run right and they run left for 20+ yards.. its a joke and its irritating.

Either way, Clancy needs to go. 80 or so pts given up in 2 weeks in your own division? In excusable. He’s a coordinator where the numbers don’t lie… the Cards didn’t make significant additions or losses on D yet their D is much better than last year.

Maybe they’re in a flat zone? Except we get torched on short passes and YAC every week? Or are they so worried about getting beat deep that they’re playing 15 yards off their man?

Brodie is the answer

to our QB problems. Pioli needs to face it but he probably wont. Haley and Cassel took a big step back. Haley committed to starting Cassel again next week even though he’s the worst QB ever.
