Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Albert as our LT of the future.

I was just reading through several of the mock drafts and mock draft discussions, and it seems like a lot of the debate for our 1st round pick comes down to Okung vs Berry/Mays.

With us playing Denver two out of the next five weeks, I think we are going to know much more whether taking a LT is a legitimate scenario with Albert going up against Dumerville.  If Albert holds his own and really limits the pressure that one of the best in the game can get, I don't think taking LT with our first pick will be considered very strongly.

If on the other hand, Albert gets dominated, then we really start thinking about taking a LT with the first pick.

I personally have been a proponent of leaving Albert a LT, but if Albert struggles, I think Pioli will be looking at a lot of OK State game tape the next five months.

We'll all be looking for progress the next five weeks in the team in general, but it will probably be especially interesting to watch Albert very closely the last few weeks, but especially how he does in the games against Denver.

Anyone else have any thoughts or match ups they will be watching really closely the next few weeks?   These match ups are really going to drive whatt we are going to be talking once the offseason starts, and in the months leading up to the draft.

That's Dumervil, my friend

But you make a very good point. Last year there was a lot of discussion about whether or not Albert was really cut out for LT – that’s a tough mark to shoot for. Dumervil is a good matchup to find out.

You might also look for Elvis to move opposite the RT or TE on other downs – they use him that way frequently if the matchup favors him. Best of luck in the games!

Here's the thing...

Albert played guard in college. If we draft an OT, we’re really killing two birds with one stone – we put Okung at LT, and move Albert to RG, basically upgrading two positions on the line with one pick. If we pick up a decent mid-round center to replace Niswanger, then suddenly the KC o-line starts looking pretty solid.

Personally though, I’d say we see how the rest of the season goes. If the line starts to gel, or it becomes glaringly obvious that safety is the biggest team need, then we should take Berry. Tomorrow will be a good yardstick game.

OR they could draft a great Guard in the 2nd or 3rd... same thing

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

I agree, and...

Move Albert to LG and he would probably be the best LG in the league. He would be in the Pro-bowl every year. Okung is a beast. I would love to see him in Chiefs red.

Interesting and a great take

To beat your Division rivals you have to have players that win one on one matchups.
We are 1-3 so far and not all of that is on Albert.
Lets see how Flowers and Carr do against the Broncos #1 and 2 WR’s.
How does Hali do against Clady? A Large measuring stick tommorrow :)

We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

True

You took it a step farther than my initial matchup of Albert and Dumervil. Great points. I think our goal next year should be to be very competitive in the West. We’ve been bad for what seems like so long, I forget that the first step to being a winning team… is winning in your division. We can go 8-8, but if we sweep the west, we are in a great position to get in the playoffs!

So yes, flowers and carr vs. Donkeys WR’s is another match to watch, as is Hali vs. Clady.

I think....

..take BPA OF NEED. dont pick Trezell Jenkins if the good ones are gone. Personally KONG Suh is my fave, but definatley not upset with any o-line pick of high caliber form or LB,OG or WR.

Our entire line is struggling... not just Albert

I’m wondering if Bill Muir is part of the problem. Our entire line seems to be underperforming. In fact, they look worse on tape than last year, even though on paper they have more talent.

A lot of factors that make a solid eval tough.

There’s been little enough fear of aerial execution to make the overload blitz an “at will” proposition for defenses. This makes it easy to underrate individual linemen, although AP’s had some solid volunteer analysis, and the group grades out rather poorly.

Long and Wade are helping Cassel’s odds in overload situations, although now it’s starting to look to my eye like Cassel’s the weak link. I think Cox is a good outlet, too. Just wish he were a more dominant blocker. Charles is a big threat to grab the outlet pass, and the play fake to him is growing some fangs, too. This is giving KC’s O-Line some glimpses of predictability, which can go a long way towards slowing the game down for them. Chambers can hurt you if Cassel gets time to survey the field.

  1. the first time this happens, Croyle gets on the field late during garbage time.
  2. the second time this happens, we maybe see Croyle coming in before CBS switches to a more competitive game.

Since Charles has been starting, Cassel has gotten some of his best looks of the season, and he’s thrown a few strikes. He needs more of those good looks, so he can start hittin’ the ones he should and stealin’ some he shouldn’t with his feet and his arm, and make us proud.

Blah blah blah.

While I’m interested in seeing if Albert has good enough feet to match up against Dumervil, I really want to see if he can manhandle the OLB on running plays. That could do more to blunt the pass rush than anything Albert does in protections. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes last week, when playaction actually worked! With the traditional widebody DE still in existence in the league, left tackle needs to match up in quickness with the 3-4 OLBs and in power with the widebody DEs. In today’s NFL, though, you might be better off just pickin’ your poison, and be satisfied with left tackle who can pass protect anyone he can’t run over and run over anybody he can’t out-quick.

I need to go get some firewood. Finshing thots herd. Hulk must rust.
