Javarris Williams....LJ replacement?

Ckdeyxgpyhzlbcg

via assets.sbnation.com

In recent weeks I've seen through the every other minute mock drafts a lil clamor for a BRUISER back to complement J-Chuck in the running game...

Star-divide

Though clearly not close the talent level initially of the ROC...At 5-10" 223lbs Williams may provide us a stop-gap till we can draft an elite level thumper...

Here is the Draft Profile Courtesy of FFToolbox....

http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=1580

Javarris Williams, RB, Tennessee State

Williams started as a true freshman in 2005, getting 872 yards on 202 carriers (4.3 average) with four TD. He also had twelve receptions for 93 yards. He was voted to the second team All Ohio Valley Conference squad. Playing in eleven games during the 2006 season, Williams recorded 1,233 yards on 245 (5.0) carriers with 11 TD; also caught 13 passes for 210 yards and one TD. He repeated as All Conference second team selection. In 2007 Williams rushed for 1,187 on 195 carriers (6.1) with 12 TD. He also received 14 catches for 240 yards.

Strong and powerful build runner. Tight hipped inside runner. Good lower body strength and leg drive. Likes contact. A very willing blocker.

And from SI.Com

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2009/draft/players/35283.html

POSITIVES: Strong, interior ball-carrier who pounds it out between the tackles. Patient, waits for blocks to develop and follows them everywhere on the field. Displays good footwork in a small area, works to set up defenders, and flashes quickness through the hole. Runs with an aggressive style, putting his shoulders into defenders, and doles out punishment. Reliable pass catcher who shows terrific vision whenever the ball is in his hands. Drives up the field on contact, and falls forward when tackled to pick up the extra yardage.

NEGATIVES: Not an elusive ball carrier who creates his own yardage. Lacks the necessary speed to turn the corner (we got J-Chuck for this)

ANALYSIS: Williams was ultra-productive in college, and his versatility as a pass catcher and running back could help him catch on as a situational/third-down (our kryptonite) specialist in the NFL.

I think with some SOLID attention to Williams from the RB coach we could have a nice compliment to Charles.  While he may flounder at first since he has not gotten a lot of touches in practice as far I have heard, hopefully he can come through and contribute for us while Savage and Kolby get better.  Let me know what you think.

Personally,

I think that Javarris Williams will be a more solid runner than either Kolby or Savage. Consider his size as well, 5-10, 223, With another ten to fifteen pounds of muscle on him, he could even ideally be an answer at Fullback. With his pass catching ability, his willingness to lay out the pain, and his ability to fool defenders with his feet, Imagine what he could do when on the field at the same time with Charles, Bowe, Chambers, Cassell, and a decent Offensive line. Easily could be a Defensive Coordinators nightmare.

Could become

something like a McClain style back FB/HB but why did we get Castille. Cox on his way out, Castille and Williams at Fullback. If that is going to happen I say Williams must get some on the field this year.

J-Chuck

LOVE IT.

Give Todd Haley a full regular and off-season to build Bowe's Cassel, and we will all wreap the benefits...

A good system 'back on paper.

Could develop into something special, but I’m not sure the O-Line is quite mature enough, as yet, for him to immediately be a one-cut-then-upfield runner, which is the direction I think KC’s pointed longer-term. But with KC going to zone-blocking scheme, he could be a beast for the Chiefs, as soon as the O-Line develops its identity. In the meantime, there’s a lot more hay to be made with Charles’ speed and his Terrell Davis mindset, for sure.

It’d be good for Williams to get some touches, but he’ll be prone to rookie error and likely a bit intimidated at this stage. Just my opinion, but it’s likely a bit early for him to step up and shoulder much of the load (in terms of his seasoning and the o-line’s current state – not a good situation for an inexperienced back).

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Williams may provide us a stop-gap till we can draft an elite level thumper...

It’s that thinking that keeps us in the gutter year after year IMO. I appreciate your sincerity but disagree completely with your post because of the quote above.

We shouldn’t go after anyone in the draft or FA or trade that is only here “til” we get the right person. Let’s just get the right person immediately. Let’s just get an elite thumper right off the bat. Why waste a draft pick on someone who isn’t really the answer. Let’s just go after someone who’s that good already. LINDELL WHITE!! He’s wasting away in Tennessee. I bet they let him go after this year. He’s not going to be ok with sitting and watching CJ run toward the Hall of Fame.

They’ve already had issues over just that starting 2 years ago. Lindell and Johnson throwing hissy fits about the other getting more play time. The two back system they currently have will not continue to fly over there. They both want the ball all the time and Lindell has clearly lost that battle. He’s done. So let’s not waste a draft pick on a position that we can fill with a veteran pro bowl caliber player instantly.

We need to draft o line big time and get some veterans in here on defense that can make a difference for us. I’m not insulting you either. It’s a nice post. I just don’t like the idea of wasting a draft pick on someone who we know isn’t going to come in and make a difference immediately. We have way more than our fair share of projects already. We need difference makers right NOW. Players like Vrabel who can help our young project players to get to the next level and inspire some hope for our young team.

Well said

Lendale would be awesome…and I hope Williams can be a starter as well. Can you imagine if those 3 could develop into a 3 back rotation like the 08’ giants…ward,Bradshaw, and Jacobs….everyone would be scrrrd.

If you will it dude....It is no dream - Jeffery Lebowski

by ChiefsnotChefs on Dec 5, 2009 7:01 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Now your talkin. Then I think Williams would be worth the investment

if we already have a high powered RB like Lindell to compliment Charles then Williams would be a great addition. He could be used on specialty plays and such while he’s developing. I would go with that.

by krayfish on Dec 5, 2009 8:44 AM CST up reply actions

Huh. Not a good fit in Tennessee, because he doesn't want to be relegated to Johnson's blocker.

I’d rather have a lunch-bucket type like Castille, personally, especially since he showed some solid ball skills in limited appearances. Lendale might be a headache, although if he didn’t whine about carries, he could give EXCELLENT service as the blocking back, who could also take the handoff. Not positive about his pass-catching, but it looks like both Castille and – short-term, some think – Cox can catch the ball on the move and turn it upfield.

Unsure about LenDale

If he was probowl caliber as you say, why wouldn’t they give him some work. He’s getting a lot less this year than previously. Yes, CJ is awesome but so is Ray Rice and the Ravens still find work for their other backs. If we can get him cheap then I’m all for it, I just wouldn’t view him as some kind of savior and break the bank for him.

As to your quote here:

We shouldn’t go after anyone in the draft or FA or trade that is only here "til" we get the right person. Let’s just get the right person immediately.

You are right and wrong. It would be good if this were always true but it’s not. It depends on your circumstances. Williams was drafted in the 7th rd. Why? Because we had higher priorities to fill than running back. So, in later rounds you can only draft “fill-ins”, “projects”, “high upside” guys and hope they pan out. You can’t expect to get “the right person” in the late rounds.

Air Cassel - approved for takeoff

by kabrink on Dec 5, 2009 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

Yup. And keep looking for guys who size up as smart and 7+ in EVERY aspect of RB.

If your talent focus is on the lines and perimeter players, you’re very likely to strike gold, just by throwing late-round picks in greater number at the RB slot. Not a huge stake in any one RB, but creating idea conditions for getting the best out of whoever’s lined up behind the QB. And you cry crocodile tears in 3 or 4 years, when the RB your system produced gets a high-dollar offer from somebody else, and you reluctantly accept a 3rd-round pick when he’s an RFA, effectively converting a 5th-round pick into a 3rd-rounder, plus years of solid service.

Smith and Savage

I like your post. Personally i dont think Smith or Savage will get any better. Williams could give us some breathing room though to pick up a free agent or wait until the 4th or 5th to draft a back

by T.Fletch on Dec 5, 2009 7:43 AM CST reply actions

+1

they could be decent if they weren’t hurt all the time

by reedeasy on Dec 5, 2009 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

I'd say that with Smith, you leave the door open a crack, while you upgrade your O-Line and WRs some more.

I don’t think his price tag is high, and they’re not done settin’ the table for a great RB we all can love at some point in the future. I wouldn’t let RB get in the way of that, and I’d focus on system picks at RB (and LB) in the meantime.

Looks to be Talent

It depends on how many JRs declare for the draft if all the players who are ready declare there will be alot of talent in the fourth to fith rd this year at RB has as it is not an area of need for many teams.
What Teams need RBs?
Stl – Maybe one
Tampa – No
Clev – Yes, 1
Det – maybe, 2
Wash – No
Oak – No
Sea – No but might get one anyway, 3
Buff – No
KC – Yes, 4
Car – No
Chi – maybe, 5
Mia – no – maybe, 6
Jets – No
Hou – maybe, 7
Tenn – No and White gets resigned thunder and lightning
San Fran – No
Atl – No
Jacks – No to maybe late rd, 8
Denver – No
Dallas – No
Pitt – No
Balt – No
Philly – Yes, 9
Cinci – No
Ari – No
NE – No
Giants – No
San Diago – No
NO – No
Indi – No
Minn – No

9 Rbs drafted
If all potential JR Rbs come out than it goes
1. Spiller
2. Dwyer, GT, Will be a very solid NFL player.
3. Best Amazing speed not a power back
4. Dixon
5. Gerhart +
6. Mathews + Very good all around RB.
7. Hardesty +
8. McKnight Athlete not a power back.
9. Royster Solid player don’t think his first step will cut it.
10. Murray + Fast and Big enough to go between the takles needs to work on strenth and Break Tackle though.
11. Scott
12. Tate
13. Unga + Decent straight ahead RB with power.
14. Helu + Good all around RB.
Could all be first day caliber and a few will be left. Players that i would want are marked +
With no JRs
1. Spiller , Clem Awesome athlete but not a power back.
2. Dixon +, Miss St. Will be a good RB.
3. Gerhart +, Stan. My #1 choice solid effort and major ability.
4. Hardesty, Tenn Also an option but I don’t see the same player every down Bomb or Bust.
5. Scott, LSU Not someone I take, but could end up here due to history.
6. Tate, Aub I see a Bust in this pick.
7. Brown, Okl Speed back.
8. James, Florida could use as KR/PR but would not give us the power back we need.
9. Toston +, Okl St See as a solid service player a Norwood not as fast but similar.
10. Coker +, Hampt Havn’t seen much but the figures look good = Javaris Williams.
Still decent talent left in later rounds with just seniors comming out.

I see us drafting a RB in the fifth rd, if a top rated RB falls then we might jump in the third.

it's big IF...

but IF Williams becomes the guy, that’d be a pretty impressive draft pick for Pioli’s resume, wouldn’t it? 7th rounder that spends most of his first yr on the practice squad, ends up being a starter…

I’m holding out hope that Williams, Lawrence, Brown, Washington will ALL contribute in 2010, and show why they were drafted

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

by stagdsp on Dec 5, 2009 12:07 PM CST reply actions

Me, too. I keep thinking there's a football player inside the star sprinter wearing #14.

I think we’ll get to see some limited action on the offense and if he catches his first target, there will likely be more. I’d probably try to get him on the field for another look if I were Haley, and the kid were showing measurable improvement in practice. He’s been activated from PS this week.

I think Brown has an excellent chance of being solid depth, at the very least, in 2010. If the Chiefs are as aggressive on O-Line as I hope, Brown should still have problems breaking into the starting lineup, but he ought to be a better-than-average backup for G and RT positions, if Muir does right by him.

Watching Washington, I’m not entirely sure he’s big-league material. I can discount for inexperience quite a bit, but I was hoping to see a more dominant athlete. He has the look of someone who’s out of his depth, and maybe the talent level and higher-order understanding of the game by NFL WRs is beyond him. But I can’t be sure it’s not the scheme currently being run. He may find it easier to just man up than to know what he’s supposed to do in a zone that’s built around slow safeties.

Also,

You got to wonder who they are going to bring in to take J. Williams spot on the PS.
