Fans and HOF Selectors Clash on Finalists

This post is sponsored by JC Penney/Van Heusen.

We told you a while back that JC Penny/Van Heusen were sponsoring a fans choice hall of fame vote. The first round of ballots are in and the fans have voted for 11 candidates that the Hall of Fame board of selectors did not vote for.

Here are the candidates that fans voted in but the selectors left out:

  • Randall Cunningham
  • Jim Plunkett
  • Phil Simms
  • Joe Theismann
  • Steve Atwater
  • Todd Christensen
  • Ed "Too Tall" Jones
  • Sterling Sharpe
  • head coach Tom Flores
  • game official Jim Tunney
  • athletic trainer Otho Davis

Make sure you vote for the final candidates as the pool gets smaller. The voting will mirror the same format as the real Hall of Fame selection process.

Really. Go vote. It will make us look better. Thanks.

I've posted the full list of the 25 candidates the fans nominated after the jump.

Thank Gods fans don't get a real vote.

None those left out by selection committee deserve to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This is not the Rock and Rock hall of fame where if you record 5 albums you get in.

I say...

Rice and Smith should be there. No doubt. Maybe Ray Guy…even though he was a Raider. Maybe Shannon Sharpe…even though he’s a dick.

The rest?

There’s some good players there…absolutely. Hall of Fame players, though? Not in my opinion.

No on Ray Guy

It makes me sick to see him touted and not see Jerrel Wilson’s name. Wilson was the better punter. I always thought Guy was fixated on gross yards and didn’t care about booming one through the end zone instead of trying to pin the opposition deep.

Shannon Sharpe certainly belongs. He’s always been irritating, and I still can’t stand him as a commentator, but there’s no denying the guy was a great player, fierce competitor, and a winner everywhere he went.

Wow - the Raider fans have been out in force

I didn’t know they could read, much less operate a ’puter.

Deon Cherry...

that dude belongs in the HOF, but they will never let him in because he was on a horrible team in the 80s. Its a shame.
