Chiefs and Bengals Scoreless in First Quarter

Not much happening on either side of the ball for both teams today. The second quarter is about to start. Here are some notes:

Positives

  • Despite giving up 24 yards rushing on three carries on the first drive, the Chiefs defense held the Bengals to an early punt on their first drive.
  • Jamaal Charles took a delayed pitch in the backfield, dodged two Bengals defenders and nearly jumped ahead four yards for the first down.
  • Matt Cassel had a solid first down pass to Dwayne Bowe on a 3rd and 9 with less than two minutes left in the first quarter.
  • CB Brandon Flowers made a great play on third down to break up a Palmer to Ocho Cinco pass.

Negatives

  • LT Branden Albert was called for a blatant false start on the first play of the game.
  • Branden Albert was called for holding that negated a long Jamaal Charles run late in the first.
  • On third down with less than minute to go in the first, the Chiefs' pocket collapsed and Cassel was sacked.

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

31st ranked run D

I dont think we have 4 good anything on D

Don't Fuccop Succop

by chicks_love_chiefs on Dec 27, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

So run D is soley on the shoulders of the DE’s?

by karkz86 on Dec 27, 2009 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

In a way

In the 34 the DL have to soak up blocks and demand double teams at every opportunity in order for the LBs to fill holes and stuff the running game. SO if your DL isn’t strong enough your LBs are going to be swallowed up by second level blockers, allowing RBs to run rampant.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Dec 27, 2009 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

I understand the workings of a 3-4 but a NT isn’t any bit of the problem, LB tackling isn’t any fault of it either is what your saying if your saying 31st rush defense is solely the fault of our De’s

by karkz86 on Dec 27, 2009 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

I said "DL" not "DE" for a reason

Note the title of my comment is “in a way” as well, referring to the point I was trying to make: that the responsibility is shouldered MOSTLY by the DEs in a 3-4 simply because they make up 66% of the DL. Not to mention, that’s the calling card of a 34 DE, their ability to stuff the run. That’s WHY you draft certain DEs for a 34, not because they can wreak havoc in the backfield but because they can manhandle Tackles and Guards into requiring double-teams that allow LBs to run free and make tackles.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Dec 27, 2009 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

Tyson is solid for a rookie DE in the 34

It takes a few years for DL to really come into their own.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Dec 27, 2009 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

Ya hes a solid rookie 3/4 de but thats why I said hes not good hes not a good 3-4 de

by karkz86 on Dec 27, 2009 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

I’m not that high, am I?

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Dec 27, 2009 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

How does that not make sense yes hes a reasonable rookie 3/4 de nothing special…. but hes far from a Seymour, Ty warren, Dockett, Smith etc

by karkz86 on Dec 27, 2009 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

Well no shit, he's not a pro-bowler yet

Big surprise there, that doesn’t mean he isn’t “good.”

I’m just trying to figure out why you’re defining “good” as playing at the level of a pro-bowler. There are plenty of good players in the league but very few of them are pro-bowlers.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Dec 27, 2009 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry but maybe I’m being to hard its not that I don’t like Tyson I love the pick and expect him to be huge for us but I just don’t think hes been good if you remove the fact that he is a rookie

by karkz86 on Dec 27, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

And have a question how your defending Tyson down here but up in the argument it’s sounding like your agreeing our De’s are a major flaw in our 31st ranked run D well tyson is a huge part of our De’s as he probably has been on the field almost as much or more than any other one

cassel is hurting, limping

The pass to #25

Is what I expect from Cassel more often. Take the hit and throw a good pass.

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

sad that it took the bangles scoring before

we grew some balls and scored ourselves

UCrawford will eventually calm down and realize that Haley isn't a bad coach.
Will embrace the Fire Haley Bandwagon if we lose to the raiders by more then a TD...
..But we aren't going to lose.
LJ will not land in Pittsburgh
The Chiefs will not be the number one pick in this years draft
The Chiefs first pick of the draft will NOT be a OL
Thinks UCrawford just needs a hug... offer is there when you are ready UC :p
