The Chiefs offensive line is offensive

They are a 3 steps forward, two steps back unit.   I grudgingly can't give a fair review of Cassel because he doesn't get to stay on his feet long enough to play consistently.

I am beginning to think that Haley or Cassel or someone has ticked these boys off and they are protesting by playing like a juvi squad.

I don't just blame the players though.  Offensive line coaching is miserable.   I have watched these boys miss their assignments in embarrasing ways.  That's not just bad playing, that's bad planning on top of it.

We know what a top notch offensive line looks like.  We've been there. What we have now isn't even close.

my prediction is, until this management gets off their collective duffs and starts to pay attention to putting a real offensive unit together, this team will not see more than 6 wins  in any season.  If that many.

But hey, this is just my opinion.  Have fun today.

Meh.

It’s bad but it is way better than it has been for the last few years. We need some help on the interior but, the pass protection has improved a lot. Run blocking could be better but, Charles can run through very small holes for positive yards.

I’d suspect they will be pretty good by next year once we have a better Center.

41 sacks

i think, coming into the game, KC had given up 41 sacks. for 3rd most in the league. yeah weve gone from 2nd most earlier in the year to 3rd…………wooopeeee

Here. says we have the second worst o-line in the league, ahead of only the Packers.

Look at the QB hits

Over half of the hits our QBs take is for a sack. That indicates something other than just a bad line. We are not even close in the QB hits category.

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

Chiefs 3-13

by bonesjackson on Dec 27, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sure they base that off of Sacks allowed

Not all of the sacks have been because of bad O-line play. It’s pretty well noted that Matt Cassel holds the ball too long. I’m not saying they don’t suck but they have been improving a lot since the bye week. This line is MUCH better than what we had in 07 and 08. Plug in two new players this offseason and our line will be solid.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Dec 27, 2009 11:15 AM CST reply actions

40% of the line is garbage..another 40 is average and Albert isn't the franchise LT we hoped

But draft a LT, Albert, Waters, FA, draft a RT and we could be much better

yanno, I've been saying Pioli needed to address O-Line in draft ... lot of us have said that

and we are bad, though marginally better now than at beginning of year

and 1970 is right as usual … some of those sacks are on Cassel, not the line

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

by upamtn on Dec 27, 2009 11:21 AM CST reply actions

Watch, now that I said that....

we’ll probably give up like, 20 sacks to the Bengals.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Dec 27, 2009 11:29 AM CST reply actions

It could be worse?

We could still have Jordan Black on the left side!

I just threw up

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

What about Turley???

Gawd, that was an experiment gone badly wrong.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Dec 27, 2009 11:33 AM CST reply actions

Just from an o line perspective,

We definately need a Center, one OG, Another OG that we can groom to take Waters place whenever he gets cut/retires. And A better RT. O’Callighan isn’t horrid, just, he isn’t great. We at least need to get someone who will push him for the starting spot. So, we need two O lineman, and could use two more to be completely solid. Assuming that you have one backup for every starting O lineman, that’s needing 40% of a full lineman staff, and that’s not counting how much our backups suck. We need a LOT of help on the O line. But then again, we need a lot of help everywhere. Linebacker, NT, Safety, WR, FB, RB. Those are all need positions right now. WR we can solve the issue pretty simply by signing Boldin in the offseason. Imagine how amazing that could be. Boldin/Bowe/Chambers. Wow. what a three WR set. We need a monster safety to help our CB’s. Someone like Berry. We need a Monster NT. we’ll likely have to go to Free Agency to find that one. We need at least two LB’s One to start opposite Hali, and one on the inside. We can probably find that in the draft, but there will be good FA possibilities there too. We need a fullback. Mike Cox can’t and won’t do the job. we. need. a. fullback. There’s so much that has to be adressed in the offseason that it hurts. O line will go a long way, and I think It should be adressed quickly. Good post bear. I agree. I just hope we don’t lose sight of all the other glaring spots this team needs too.

Watching the game today

The offensive line is having problems: don’t sustain their blocks well, seem to miss assignments, make critical penalties (negate a 43-yard Charles run with a holding penalty on Albert), center getting pushed back into the backfield by the nose tackle, etc. Agree that the offense will be hamstrung w/o improvement there. Unfortunately, probably gonna take another year to build a better unit.

OTOH, compared to the KC-Cincinnati game last year, this looks like a significantly better Chiefs team— at least for the first half.

by Wheatboy74 on Dec 27, 2009 1:57 PM CST reply actions

Just watched the game

Is it just me or do the refs have a hard on for calling bad calls against or what. 3 bad calls in this game and the last one on their 14 play drive to get the go ahead TD that was against Carr was terrible. IMO that call alone cost us the game. Week after week the chiefs deal with this shit.

by CPT.Caveman on Dec 27, 2009 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Agree

They know who is supposed to win, and crap on the Chiefs. I couldn’t believe the calls today that were obvious missed calls, and pathetic trash calls. All went against us that made a huge difference in the outcome.

by TXChiefan on Dec 27, 2009 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

Yep the holding call on Albert was

nitpicky at best, it had ne effect on the play the flag was thrown way late and Alberts hands were inside.
Carr was interfeared with sould of went against the offense.

that "offensive" line

just blocked for a 100yd rusher AGAIN
and allowed only 1 Sack against a top 5 defense…

they are getting better

+1

Odd choice of post after one of their better statistical games. Other then the hold on Albert after Charles was already long gone there wasnt anything “horrible” really.

Agreed

A new Center will make a big difference………..let’s churn the roster and FA for the other guard. Maybe one more addition later in the draft. The o-line has come a long way since week one this season……

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 27, 2009 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

If we're bothering to keep Waters...

Id like to see him brought back to play center but nothing else. He’s getting only and isn’t as quick or as nimble as he used to be. He’s had at least three false starts this season trying to get a jump on his pull to the right side because he just can’t do it effectively anymore and I think he knows it.

by GenericBrand on Dec 27, 2009 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

That "offensive' line

had a 100 yard rusher find the holes to get through. This running back makes them look better than they are.

I give Charles a LOT of credit for making things happen instead of just waiting for them to happen, unlike a certain other RB who now plays for the bengals.

This line doesn’t deserve all the credit for those yards by Charles.

I can roll with that.

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.

Well according to this website...

Theres alot of great OL available in free agency….

Including some guy named Willie Roaf….we should sign him…

Don't forget about the guys off the field

Colin Brown and That huge RG Richardson out of Clemson.

Both needed work but have had a lot of time to work on it, Richardson looked decent last week. Need to get a STUD center, no doubt, and probably a guard. I’m tired of hearing move phat Albert in side, he played guard in college because he was next to Ferguson and then Monroe. Albert will be fine at tackle when we shore up the middle better.

I'm not a smart man

Cassel vs. o-line

Can’t pin this all on the o-line. They’ve improved markedly and yet I haven’t seen that same sort of improvement from Cassel. Some you can blame blockers for blowing their assignment. But in a lot of cases, Cassel misses the hot route. When you send 6 blitzers, somebody’s bound to be wide open. That’s what separates Brady/Brees/Manning from everyone else.

I haven’t given up completely on Cassel. But he’s got a really long way to go. And our o-line has played more than well enough for Cassel to make the plays he’s not making.

by Jon Yoon on Dec 28, 2009 1:06 PM CST reply actions

Right on.

They would all look better if we had a reciever that could catch the #$# football. Maybe we do, put he just didn’t get a chance this game. Is Cottam injured, or did they cut him last week?
I’m confused.
