Kansas City Chiefs (Spring grade: C-)
I called the Tyson Jackson pick a reach at the time -- and it still seems that way. Classic case of trying so hard to find the player that fits your system, but you end up not trading down and getting lower value based on the position. Jackson has disappointed. They don't get a single serious contributor to a weak roster. Well, save for Mr. Irrelevant, Ryan Succop, who handles the kicking. No movement, which isn't a good thing.

Matty I don't get one thing. Why is every 1 so down on this poor rookie?
He has no idea how to hang in the NFL and he’s got a terrible d coach and a worse back up d coaching staff. Krumrie and gibbs? no good.
Trade down? really?
Trade down huh? I really doubt this was even an option, but hey Mr. Big Hair knows it all right? Its ONE season, how can you grade after ONE season? Sure glad my employer doesn’t do this:)
IMO,
Vrabel and Cassel should add into this draft grade. Not having a second kind of hog tied us into having a less than stellar draft. Pioli made a pick that should turn out to be safe. TJax will be a solid starter, but not an elite stud.
Factor in the Cassel Vrabel trade and I give KC a B-. Vrabel has been invaluable as a mentor. Look what he’s done with Studebaker and Williams. Cassel has shown promise as a clutch guy, and we know that he can succeed on a good team.
My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:
"Shut the f--- up."- Matt Cassel
"WHAT THE F---?!?!"- Todd Haley

absolutely
totally agree.
that’s 4 starters right away, plus Magee who contributes.
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers
that trade may end hurting the Chiefs
instead of keeping that pick and using it on an offensive lineman or linebacker. The Chiefs probably wouldn’t be much worse w/ Thigpen or Sanchez at QB.
i disagree
I think it’ll work out to be a GREAT trade
you CAN’T get two starters, including a “franchise” QB with one pick.
you know Thigpen wasn’t a franchise guy, Sanchez may be… but Jackson will end up being an important part of this defense, so I wouldn’t trade those picks

Agree
Very rare to trade down from the 3rd pick, because IT’S SO DIFFICULT! Wake up, Mel. They could have drafted someone else such as Crabtree, paid a ton of money, and then seen every opponent this year rush for 250 yards, the offense is never on the field.
The choice, and Kiper’s response, demonstrates how uninformative the concept of a ‘reach’ can be when talking about the draft sometimes.
as it is now, it hasn't been a "great" trade
not sure anyone would label that trade “GREAT.” Just because the Chiefs acquired immediate starters doesn’t mean they’ve fared any better (similarly to acquiring Pat Surtain a few years ago). Vrabel may only play a couple more years (minus injury time) and Cassel hasn’t shown he’s a franchise player.
In hindsight, I’m sure Pioli wouldn’t have given Cassel that huge contract and he probably would’ve taken Curry or an O-lineman w/ the #3..
we can agree to disagree
I think Pioli is happy with what he got

You don't think they tried to trade down Kiper?
you dipshit.

Disagree with Mel
It takes defensive line two or three yrs to really show what they can do on the NFL level. He’s bragging about how good this kid from Nebraska is at defensive tackle but he’s not going to come in the NFL dominating either. Just like Sapp, Haynesworth, Dorsey, and Jackson, The kid from Nebraska is going to struggle in his first yr in the league.
Another thing
I wonder what was Mel Kiper grade on Mario Williams in Week 16 of his rookie year probably an F. And he probably gave the Reggie Bush an A. Looking back on it now he probably looks like an idiot. Especially when everyone was saying the Texans made a huge draft mistake taking Williams over Bush. Like I said it takes lineman a little longer to learn how to play the position on an NFL level just like QB and receivers.
