Let me start by saying that I love the 3-4 defense. I believe it is the most exciting, attacking defense and I grew up watching Derick Thomas raise havoc in it. But that change was also the BIGGEST mistake Haley/Pioli made in their first year. Now you can point out many other mistakes I'm sure - my #2 biggest mistake was not overhauling the o-line in the offseason! - but I digress . . . There was NO reason to move to the 3-4 until some of the pieces could be put into place. Instead we had (past tense!) players with better ability in the 4-3 but forced the 3-4 on players that didn't fit the scheme. Simply put, square pegs and round holes.
Now, at the end of the year you have to ask yourself which are we closer to . . . A few players away from a solid 3-4 defense or a few players away from a solid 4-3? I bring this all up because of the many recent posts on the 2010 draft. Due to our poor performance, there is a chance that Suh will be available to us. He is hands down the MOST dominate defensive lineman in quite some time. I will put it out right now that if he is available, I would vote for moving back to the 4-3 and yes, I know it's only been one season but he is that dynamic plus we already have man of the pieces. The rest of the d-line would require Hali moving back to DE with Jackson, Suh, Dorsey and McGhee at DT's. I would also point out that in our current 3-4 we still need 2 or 3 solid linebackers next year for starting and depth. The 4-3 move would then only require 1 or 2. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion so please take the poll and be heard!
