"Volunteer" Defense?
I was just participating in Jon Yoon's post on the defense a few minutes ago and it hit me about our defense this year. Some have said recently that many of our players are just not starter quality for the NFL and that is why we have been in a funk for the last few years. Its funny how reading one thing and then actually thinking of another can bring an idea together. (Rarely am I accused of thinking too much or too often)
Anyways, I have all the respect in the world for volunteer firefighters and still volunteer in my community on my off days. They are the heart and soul of Americas firefighters since they cover 80% of the United States. Many times you will find departments that dont really have the manpower to train often enough or even have the necessary equipment to attack a fire like it should be from the inside out, or worst case they just are not able to arrive early enough to go inside and put the fire out.
I equate this too our defense. Many times we show up in the first quarter and have a plan to attack the fire (gameplan), but we dont have the necessary guys (firemen who have the training for interior attacks) to do the job against a better equipped "fire". (team)
Other times we are so far outmatched (by a superior team) that we dont even stand a chance to save the house (win the game in any way) before the game even started (late to arrive for a fully involved structure fire).
We got called to help a County Department a few years back on a house fire that was reported to be in the bathroom. When we arrived we saw one truck and it had two hoses pulled off of it, charged and ready to go. One fireman was manning the truck, one was standing in the front yard with his radio and one was near the front porch with the hose in his hand. Another who we couldn't see at first was at the back porch with a hose in his hand. When we walked up we asked where the fire was and the "office in charge" stated it was in the bathroom. We saw some light smoke escaping through the door and out of the eaves and I said, "what are ya'll waiting for?" His reply, "you guys!"
So it won't surprise me to see another mass exit of players by the time training camp ends next year and a large number of new faces wearing the Chiefs logo for us next season.
Hmmmm.......?
Now, as it is with my sex life, what am I going to do for the next 23 hours and 55 minutes of this day?

And a new Def.Coordinator...
Lets dream for a minute….a new, hard-nosed Def. coordinator with a couple new veteran FA signings…..maybe CB, LB, or NT. Brian Billick would be a top choice, no Romeo, maybe a college guy….Bud Foster (VT). I dont know, but i hope something happens and they get rid of the mediocre players.
Billick is/was an offensive guy....
….that is why Baltimore hired him in the first place. He was the “mastermind” behind Minnesota’s huge offense. Nevermind that he had Chris Carter and Randy Moss. It was also his eventual undoing in the end.

I'm one of few unwilling to throw Clancy under the bus.
He had AZ playing Championship-level D at the end of last season. They started strong this year, but have faded, somewhat, IIRC. He’s one of few coordinators I know of around the league who isn’t just stuck on one way of doing things. Give him more talent and give our players a little continuity (and another season away from an old DC from Germany who sees himself as the 2nd coming of George S. Patton).
Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.
Not sure I'm ready to send Clancy packing either but I sure would like to see....
…..a talented assistant come in and push for the job. At the very least to bring some fresh ideas to the table. Clancy is the scape goat for a team in transition with minimal personel capable of running the 3-4 to the full extent.

let the bus hit em
ok now….
i have to come to realize that some great nfl teams….
are great b/c of their running game or great QB
greg robinson and clancy had great D on superbowl run….
both are terrible
then there are great defensive teams….
pitt, balt, tb
where they go deep in playoffs and many times win SB inspite of qb…

I'm all in favor of competition among the assistants.
I just really liked the style of D he ran in AZ down the stretch last year.
Greg Robinson’s best corner in both Den and KC was Ray Crockett, for Pete’s sake. Didn’t like what he ran, but he found a way to prevent TDs from outside the 20 and in their SB run, had enough stout up front to make it stick in the red zone. Did I like everything he did in KC? Heck no. But he labored under the handicap of never having a structurally sound defense, so while everyone was bitchin’ about HIM, I was lookin’ at the personnel and thinking Just wait until the defense is shored-up. Peterson found it more convenient to scapegoat his DC than to fix the talent. Typical of that GM (and some fans).
I’m re-watching the Cleveland game, tonight. Recent lowlights include Alleman and Niswanger conspiring for the sack and Ron Edwards being managed 1-on-1 by Mack. Painful to watch.
Main problem I see as far as coachin’-‘em-up is the LB play, but I figured from their “churning the roster” approach to that position, and all that I learned about 3-4 defense as a result of KC’s switch, that Belcher, Mays and DJ would be given simplified job descriptions and they’d scheme to let their LBs play downhill all day. I concluded that the Chiefs were going to protect the 4 LBs by going overkill on DL, and singling-up on the perimeter a whole helluva lot more than Gunther/Edwards ever did, because I remembered how ballsy Clancy was in AZ.
The turd in the punchbowl was Tank Tyler’s utter failure to play true NT. Add to that the loss of a significant amount of speed when Pollard left (I see his departure as one of a relatively small number of ‘not the right 53’ exits) and even MORE speed when Page, yet again, missed time at FS and eventually ended up on IR.
The style of D that he brought to AZ was NOT the style he brought to KC. I can see Flowers, especially, but also Carr, starting to show signs of adjusting from zone to press, but they’re both zone corners, chosen and trained for that purpose. ‘09 was a lot like another rookie year for both of them, in a system that doesn’t truly fit their measurables, in Flowers’ case, or predisposition, in Carr’s case. Both have responded well, but a fairly large number of WRs in this league force Clancy to either give up the long ball or play cover-2 all day long, and still get burned deep, because the Ss are too slow.

Meh! Clancy needs to go.
A coaching change could do more than people probably think. I’ll agree that Clancy did have the Cardinals playing well in the playoffs llast year but, During the season they were not very good at all. In fact, his defenses were never ranked very high during his tenure there. They have a lot of talent too, Adrian Wison, Dansby, Rodgers Cromartie, etc.
I’m ready for a change at DC. If Pendergast wants to stay on as a LB coach, I would probably be okay with that but, I would like to a more reputable guy as our DC.
Agree
Not sure how long Clancy was in AZ, but they habitually had a poor D. The Offense is what was the AZ strength. I just think it came together and they finally made it synch. I do like Clancy, but I think he is in over his head without enough talent to bring it together. I’d like him to stay in a specialized roll, but we definitely need a top Coordinator.
On that note, I give Crumrie a + for his knowledge and drive, but our D-line has been completely inept the past few seasons. Sorry Tim, but either you are not cutting it, or our high draft picks are just poor producers. Id think that with the talent we have in draft picks and potential, we should be able to completely stuff the run and defense the pass. There is no reason our D should stink like the do.
Are you sure about that.
Perhaps you should read http://www.kcchiefs.com/coach/clancy_pendergast/ before you throw him under the bus.
Perhaps it’s biased, but it sounds like the AZ defense immediately went from abysmal to fairly respectable when he arrived. And remember that for at least a couple of those years, they had a quick-strike offense that didn’t eat much clock on the ground.
I really don’t think Clancy is the problem, here. Firing him would be the 3rd DC in as many years. That’s not a recipe for success.
Other lowlights from Sunday’s game: Gilberry is NOT decent depth for DE. He’s strictly a situational pass-rushing end. Haven’t yet discovered what use there is for Dion Gales.

Nice post Lanier
agree on the need for some quality reinforcements Right up the middle of our D I think :)
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!
