Chiefs Nearing NFL Record Number of Drops
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has said previously he doesn't think he has ever been apart of a team that drops as many balls as the Chiefs.
Well, he's wrong.
The Chiefs are only four dropped passes away from tying a NFL record held by the 2003 Detroit Lions and the 1995 New York Jets. Haley of course was in his first year as a scouting assistant for the Jets in 1995.
The Chiefs currently stand at 47 dropped passes. The NFL record is 51. (Numbers come via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.)
Mark Bradley was a culprit in the drops category and now he's gone. Dwayne Bowe is a major culprit as well, and he's back.
The question now becomes, with two games remaining, will they break the record?

I wonder if this new record will qualify us for some stimulus money?

I think
this an easy question. At the rate we’re going we’ll have it beat by next game, even though dropped passes aren’t an official league stat, but then again our recievers aren’t really playing like official NFL caliber players so this record fits them perfectly.
Yes
Easily. It’s going to be a long time before some body breaks this record. Our WR should be ashamed.

At the rate they're going I don't see how they WONT break it.
Probably break or tie it the first half of the game on Sunday.
If you only knew...
This is why I think "Haley Might Be Fired" discussion should resume.
I don’t think he should, and most have shrugged it off, but WR’s and offense are his specialties. Personnel or not, The fact that they’ve been such a failure and disaster is very telling. Many of our receivers are veterans or could be considered so (Chambers, Wade, and Bowe has had a few years in the league). It’s like a five star chef personally delivering a plate of fish sticks and macaroni and cheese.

...an unexpected outcome.

Just because you think Haley should be fired
doesn’t make a discussion that he “might” be fired any less boring. Everyone is on record with what they think.
Specific to the arguement you seem to be making about the drops reflecting poorly on Haley, it’s a pretty weak position to take. Bad players play bad. Great coaches fail to improve bad players all the time…on every team. If you want to make an arguement that Haley is failing to deliver on WR promise, you should focus on Bowe. Wade was cut for not being very good. Chambers was specifically cut for drops. It’s the failure to improve Bowe that’s somewhat disturbing.
Blaming coaching for not improving a high end talent is a valid discussion. Blaming coaching for serving shit sandwiches when the only ingredient they had to work with was shit is a snooze fest.

Great point Satch. But...I DO want Haley as the coach next year. :)
But I suppose I could contend that our WR’s aren’t “bad.” Wade was a starter. Chambers was a starter. Bowe was a starter going into this year. Maybe theres a mental lapse or they’re afraid of making mistakes, etc. Either way, the WR corps could be much worse and I’d venture a bet that there’s a strong case that they could catch balls that were thrown to them.

Didn't mean to pin a position on ya
Replace “you think” with “someone thinks” in the title. ;)
It is true that Wade was a starter on a team that was considered to have very poor receivers. One they got some talent, he not only wasn’t good enough tot start anymore…they cut him.
Chambers is an interesting case because he came here with a drops problem. SD cut him for drops. He has improved a great deal in this area since he arrived in KC. (Although he had one very bad drop that may have cost us a game) Prior to the past year or so in SD, Chambers had a reputation for good hands. So did coaching here improve him or did he just revert to form? Who knows. I’d eliminate Chambers from the discussion if for no other reason than small sample size.
Bowe is the one that makes you think “WTF”. All things pointed to Bowe being a bright spot in a bad season. Instead he’s been below average at best.

come on
dont we need to give Bowe some slack I mean he did have a 4 week vacation right in the middle of the damn season so hes still trying to shake the rust off, just in time for the season to be over with, thanks alot D Bowe.
Sorry i missed the sarcasm.
The only way I think Bowe is on the team is if Pioli can not get value for him. He will be shopped, but I think his value is gone. We will find out how frustrated Haley is with him. I think they make the trade for a second round pick, but I don’t think anyone will be interested. It will be interesting to see if they take a 3rd rounder.

You ain't snatching ish
;)
I picked up the Cleveland RB, you’re totally boned! hahaha
If you only knew...
Bowe dropped a lot of balls before Haley arrived on the scene
Don’t know about Chambers and Wade and how reliable they were in the past. I assume that Bowe will end up with (per game or per pass targeted) about the same # of drops as last year.
How ‘telling’ it is I’m not sure, don’t know if there’s much evidence that at the pro level, after a player’s been in the league a couple of years, that coaching of any kind will reduce their drops (e.g., Braylon Edwards). I know that things get tried: advanced vision testing, etc. For awhile I’ve wondered whether it might be better to trade Bowe now, instead of paying big $$$$ for a below-average-hands possession receiver when his rookie contract runs out.
It was always a problem for Wade
Chambers has been average to above average in the drops department before having a horrible stretch in SD leading to his release.

in my opinion
these guys are suppose to be pros, most have been playing football for alot of years, if you count college, high school, etc. If they havent learned how to catch by now I dont think there is anything a head coach can do to correct that. Now I dont know if they just arent used to catching from a new QB, as everyone throws the ball a little different, but I would think after a week or two practicing together that cant be used as an excuse.
Cassel puts a lot of heat on the short passes but...
so did Dan Marino. You didn’t hear his WRs bitching about it. They just need to learn how to catch it. No excuses!

And so did Favre.
Receivers always complained about how much their hands hurt from lasers thrown 5 feet away. But they caught the ball! :)

I agree, jk ... Haley is (was) supposed to be the Offensive Guru Tech ... look what he did in AZ! omg he's the BEST EVER!
only not
now, I personally hate the turnover (coaching wise) but then too, I thought Herm deserved at LEAST one more year … hate the turnover playerwise as well (I put that on Haley and Pioli) … but yeah, this has gone on FAR too long, and he pushed out one of the BEST OCs in the business because … well, who knows why … he rotates players like it’s a merry-go-round, he’s antagonized players since he got here …
you know, Herm could have had 5-6 wins this year already, a harder working and more cohesive team than what we’ve seen … and THAT would have been progress to me
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
we would have 5-6 wins this year
if we didnt drop 50 passes, with a hand full of those that would have been touchdowns. I just dont see how thats any coaches fault you cant really teach a guy how to catch, especially not at this level they should already now how to do that.
oh, ok banshee ... so we "blame" the GM who signed these guys who can't catch, right?
that Pioli must be one lousy talent evaluator …
although, I’ve heard rumors that they actually like work a guy out on the field before they sign him to a contract, and usually the HC is on the field and all that, so … maybe it IS Haley after all … has to be one of them, or is it BOTH of them?
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
Yeah at least Herm knew why you play the game...
But really you think Herm could take this same group and have twice as many wins?? I don’t think Herm could teach our secondary how to stop giving up multiple 50+ yard plays a game or our entire defense how to stop Jerome “No One Knows Who I Am” Harrison from putting up all those yards?
I am not saying I buy in to the whole “right 53” but I think we do need to get players in and out and find out who we got…its not like we are benching Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin to try some young blood, we are replacing BAD receivers with hopefully NOT SO BAD receivers.
I don’t think Marty, Parcells, and Herm together could get this team to 6 wins…we need better PLAYERS not just better coaching.
Go Chiefs!
and

lmao
hello you play to win the game.
Are you saying that Wade or Bradley arent the next Jerry Rice, man I had such high hopes.
yeah, Josh, I actually DO think we'd have twice as many wins with Herm
for starters, we’d also still have Chan Gailey as OC, and for my money he’s a far, far better OC than the one we have right now (Ted Healey, Tad Holey, whatever his name is) … and they’d have had all summer to work on it, instead of starting over just before the season started, which put us back at least a month (Oakland at home and Dallas, two wins right there)
I also think we’d have at least some less turnover on the roster, which leads to a bit more “continuity” in terms of players getting a feel for one another, not to mention you wouldn’t see the depth chart shuffling like we’ve seen here this year … you’d see players busting their butts for a full 60 minutes every game, and I’m not sure we’ve seen that every game this season
plus, we’d have had a MUCH better draft, because Herm knew precisely what holes needed to be filled most with our last draft, whereas Pioli failed to do one iota of homework over the winter and, IMNSHO, we ended up with one of the worst overall drafts in years (Succop the lone exception) … we desperately needed OLinemen and got … DLinemen (somehow I can’t quite see how Jackson and McGee are supposed to protect our “Franchise QB” or help with our running game)
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
Man, this sucks!
If these guys would just hang on to the fucking ball, our offense would be great. JC is running well, the line seems to be blocking okay, Cassel is putting the ball on target and the wideouts won’t catch it. WTF???.
Maybe Bradley getting cut will send a message of urgency to Bowe and some of the other guys. I hope it makes a difference.
I absolutely agree with you Chiefsfan1970.
But unfortunately I don’t think Bradley is a big enough target. Wasn’t he a candidate for cutting back in training camp? Bowe I’m especially fed up with. He’s a great player to the fans, but his performance hasn’t been keeping up with the adoration towards him. He needs to perform like he’s our #1.
Most of these guys just need to get out of their own heads for a few minutes and play some ball.
"Speed...(long pause)....Kills." -- Lenny Dawson (on JC)
Is this that surprising?
I don’t understand the disbelief. What should have been done? The Chiefs haven’t been able to catch footballs for years. The presence of Tony Gonzalez masked this fact.
By the time Pioli got hired, looked at what personnel were in place, the major FA wide receivers like TJ Houshmenzada were off the market. There were so many people that wanted Crabtree over Curry and Jackson, how would that have helped the team this year?
This is a rebuilding year. They have worn the waiver wire out looking for options. They could have traded for Braylon Edwards, but he drops the ball like crazy and has been a bust for the Jets. People are so down on Haley because he brought in Long and Pope from Arizona, but THEY KNOW HIS OFFENSE. He needs people he can count on.
This record should Also absolve Cassel of the incredible criticism he’s been enduring for weeks. Think about his stats/wins if only his guys could catch the ball.
The Patriots always put a premium on receivers in free agency. I think we should be patient and see what Pioli nabs in FA and the draft.
by Chief-Eli on Dec 23, 2009 9:41 AM CST via mobile reply actions
I'm no Cassel hater
But it does not completely absolve him for poor play. He’s had a couple of very bad games….not down games….not off days…just flat out bad. He neds to show more consistency and make better decisions with the ball. There’s enough blame to go around for everyone this year.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

theres usually a good reason other teams just cut a receiver
most of the time a team like Minn or San Diego arent going to just cut a good receiver for no reason. Guess what the cut their receivers because they couldnt hold on to the ball, so its no surprise we are leading this category. By Haleys count we already have the record, he said sun that the league had us at like 40 drops he had us already over 50.
except
Chambers has dropped what? 2 balls? he has also made some catches to save cassels ass as well. Yeah Wade looks like garbage now but Chambers is our best WR as of now.
If your hands touch the ball, you should be able to catch it.
That’s Haleys policy and I think that rings true throughout the league. That’s what they get paid for and they need to catch the damn ball. No excuses are necessary when they are doing their job. Cassel has been doing his. (At least for the last 2 weeks)
That's what they yelled at me
from flag football in the 3rd grade to high school. Heck, in high school if I dropped a ball in game or practice I had a punishment of some sort. Coaches would make us run extra, catch more balls, or something to drill it in our heads that if it hit our hands we were supposed to catch it. These guys must not be punished for drops. I say that only because I am fairly certain Wade would have missed a game or two still doing punishments for all the balls he’s dropped.
i think they told him
he cant leave practice till he catches 2 in a row, so yes he is still trying to finish practice after the Denver game a few weeks ago.
and, if the ball touches your face mask, you should be able to catch it
Air Cassel - approved for takeoff
Seriously?
Who typed no? We have 2 games left and only need 4. The only way we won’t pass that record is if we don’t pass the ball more than 4 times in the next 2 games.
So we will set this record this year, last year we set the all-time low on sacks. What’s up for next year? Most fumbles? Least amount of tackles? Most punts? Most fights between players and coaches? Could be an interesting year.
dont say most fumbles cause Charles already has a problem
hanging onto the ball. As for most punts didnt we break that record last year if not I dont see how thats all we did is punt. And Im pretty sure we will break the drop record in our first series this weekend unless we just run the ball.
Did we break that one?
Wouldn’t suprise me if we broke it last year and are about to break it again. Well, we will need a different record for next year then.
See, things aren’t so bad, we are breaking records left and right. Heck, we get to go to games and watch players have the greatest games of their careers. I just wish they were wearing red and gold.
I bet none of them have a problem holding
onto their paychecks when they are thrown their way. I have the solution for the drops, tape their paychecks onto the football, I bet they catch it every damn time then.
thats why they have direct deposit....

This is one of the topics that drives me crazy
because for one thing, the data is sketchy at best. As I said to the guys next to me during the game on Sunday, not only are dropped passes not an official NFL statistic, we have no idea how they are determined. There is no recognized standard of what a dropped pass really is. It’s a judgment call – it has to be – but who is making the judgment? Someone with some idea of what a “catchable” pass really is, or some acne-faced kid reviewing tape in his mom’s basement?
In MLB, at every game there is an “official scorer” whose job is to determine if an error should be charged, and there are standards for them to follow in making that assessment. There’s accountability in that. But as far as I know, no such system exists in the NFL for making these judgments. So in my mind, the data is pretty meaningless.
This is not to say that Chiefs receivers haven’t dropped a lot of catchable passes. They have. But I don’t buy the argument that if it hits them in the hands and they don’t catch it, then it’s automatically a dropped pass.
For starters, where are their hands? I’ve seen cases this season where balls are thrown behind receivers. Those don’t look like catchable balls to me – but many times, the receivers have gotten a hand on it, and people count it as a drop.
What about a pass that arrives at the receiver’s feet? If they are able to reach down and get a hand on it – but are unable to catch it – should it be counted as a drop?
Or to point out a often-argued case, how about the deep pass that Bobby Wade couldn’t bring in against San Diego? Most people seem to be counting it as a drop, but my own feeling is that the ball was at least a little overthrown. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to say that it would have been smarter for Wade to lay out and make the catch – rather than try and stay on his feet and make some additional yards – but Wade had to know he had beaten the coverage. I think most of us would have a hard time not trying to stay on our feet and make a TD play in that circumstance.
I’m not trying to suggest Wade didn’t have some responsibility in that play. He did. Question is… how much? I’m saying that any discussion of dropped passes needs to start with some kind of standard – and as far as I can see, there isn’t one.
All that said, I wonder if part of the problem is that the wide receivers are pressing. This position has been a revolving door all season – and of course, the team is often playing from behind. These two factors put a lot of additional pressure on each receiver for every single catch. Sure… it’s their job to deal with that pressure, but I have to wonder how much different it would be if Haley had simply played the hand with which he was dealt at WR this season, and allowed these guys to get in there and get comfortable with Cassel… without feeling that their jobs were on the line with every single play.

I think that's nitpicking.
Most of us are pretty in tune with what is and isn’t a catchable ball. I will agree that some of the ones that have been considered drops are questionable but, this group has dropped a LOT of passes that were right on the money that would have turned into 3rd down conversions and TDs.
Whether you agree with the calculations or not, those drops have been killing us and costing us wins all year.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Dec 23, 2009 2:54 PM CST up reply actions
No argument
that the drops have been a bad problem for the Chiefs – and that there have been many in critical situations.
It only seems to me that if we’re going to point to receiver X or receiver Y as the problem, then we need the tools to evaluate them properly. A standard for what constitutes a dropped pass is a start. One you have that, then you can compare that to the number of times a receiver has been targeted, and come up with a ratio that actually means something.
John

excellent comments, RDO, and rec'd
I’d go on to say that more than a few players feel like if they do one little thing wrong their job might be on the line (at least earlier in the season) … leading to “playing tight” instead of just letting loose (omg I might do something WRONG and get DEMOTED or RELEASED so instead I’ll do … nothing)
more or less

Well Im assuming that since Bradley is gone that Wade might be back in there...
No reason to think he wont get 4 drops himself… Plus you can add one from Bowe and Chambers each.
