Cottam & Cottam?
Im not the typical guy that wants to talk about the draft this early but I came across something I did not know and I have done a little research and I think we could possibly have a good pair of tight ends next year if we where to draft the little brother of our own Brad Cottam to come in and be a blocking tight end while Brad keeps improving his hands and be the receiving tight end.
Here is a brief scouting report on Jeff Cottam from DraftNasty:
#80 TE Jeff Cottam (6'8'' 260) SR
Jeff is the 2nd TE in Tennessee's offense and he gets a lot of playing time on a week to week basis. Jeff displays soft hands to catch poorly thrown balls outside his frame but doesn't display the shiftiness to make people miss in the open field. In pass protection, Jeff is a very solid blocker that can dominate his opponent. He isn't a mauler by any means, but uses his long arms to maneuver his man and keep them at a safe distance from the QB. Jeff also possesses great footwork to slide and shuffle when having to pick up the blitz coming off the edge.
#80 Jeff Cottam TE 6'8" 260 SR
Not as good of a receiving TE as brother Brad, currently with the Kansas City Chiefs. Has some length as an in-line blocker. Commonly used in Tennessee's two-tight end (ACE/SILVER) type formations. Very angular build; Looks to engage early and lacks significant pop off ball. Will run his feet once engaged and is a position blocker who walls off and seals defenders. Not a road grading TE, but is committed to blocking.
NFLHouse also named Cottam as a big school sleeper that is overlooked but will be a steady contributor in the NFL.
All in all Jeff seems to be a raw talent in the draft but he also sounds like with a little work he could be a great blocking tight end in the near future. I would not mind seeing the Chiefs have a Tight End duo of these two brothers for the right price.

I like Brothers at the Chiefs level.
One guy that will push the other. Cottam’s and Pouncey’s might be a nice brawl come TN and Fla gametime and every Sunday for the Chiefs
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

They sure look alike dont they?
I think we would have a couple of solid TEs in these two and like you said they would raise the bar against each other to see who could do the best it would be fun to watch and I think could help our team. He cant be any worse than Ryan or O’Connell
plus one for the pounceys!
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers
Im a big Cottam fan.
And still believe we have a special player on our hands and I think Haley was finally starting to realize it which makes this IR setback even more of a shame. Some may castrate me over a comment like this but there are moments or instances that he reminds me of TG in his technique. I’m not saying by any stretch that we have another Probowl TE on our hands but he has the ability to be a main contributor to this offense.
If his little bro can play then sign him up because 44 is right when he says that Jeff can’t be any worse then the absolute crap we’ve fielded at TE this year.

Brad's been brittle
I’d have to hope that Jeff wouldn’t be. He hasn’t seemed to be as fragile in college, at least. If KC could get another Dunn, a long-time blocker at TE who could catch a dozen passes a season, I’d gladly use a pick on that.

Sounds like he would be an undrafted free agent.
It would be worth a shot to get a true blocking TE.
yup
could you imagine two 6’8 Tight Ends? If they both could atleast catch the ball a little better…could you imagine trying to defend both of them with Bowe/Chambers in the red zone?
I'd agree that he'd probably be UDFA
But sometimes if you see a guy who’d be UDFA, but might be a little difficult to sign, you spend that 6th or 7th on him.
On the other hand, Carl Peterson made it plain that 8th-string safeties are excellent late-round picks.

Yup
Ex Ryan Succop I heard a lot of people where actually wanting to bring him in as an UDFA. I wouldnt mind a late round pick on a possible good blocking Tight End.
Plus we should have Supp pick after the 7th round just like last year.

That landing on his neck looked pretty bad...
I wouldn’t call him brittle. Dude’s built like a brick shithouse.

yeah that was a tough fall
He seemed to tough it out pretty well if you ask me. Not much you can do if you crack something.
He essentially dropped a 250 lb weight on his head
He’s pretty fortunate that it wasn’t a more serious injury…really hope it’s not a long-term injury (for his AND KC’s sake). The way he was running routes & catching ball the past couple games, I think he could really be a solid TE in the passing game.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010
He had inhury problems in college as well
Injuries kept out of over half his games Jr and Sr year if memory serves. I remember thinking the injuries were more bad luck than anything else tho. I think the worst of them was a broken wrist. Not like he kept tearing his ACL.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

He's been brittle for most of his career, I mean
I’m not talking about just one incident. He’s big and solid, but he missed a lot of time in Knoxville, and that hasn’t changed since arriving in KC.

He's missed some workouts and camp days, I believe
No games, I don’t think, but I think he has been limited at times due to injury. I guess he’s also missed time simply by being a non-factor.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 23, 2009 10:44 AM CST up reply actions
I think the non-factor issue
would be more of Haleys fault becuase he was not using Brad in the system early enough in the season. I think if we would of used him instead of Ryan at the beginning of the season the Cottam would of had a pretty good year…
I think its Haleys fault for not using him more
simply because an Off Coord would be the one to make the decisions to inform the HC of Cottam’s availability….“he’s just sitting there coach, put him in!”
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
Haley could be at fault
But that’s his system. I’m not sure I know his coaching history in its entirety, but I can’t recall any place he’s been in which he’s been the guy making the call to use the TE. Maybe he did a little in Dallas, but he wasn’t the OC or TEs coach.

Ryan was getting a lot of looks...
I would have rather seen Cottam getting those reps. I don’t know if Haley didn’t trust him because he was a Herm pick or what but, Cottam has shown flashes of talent ever since he got here. More so the last couple weeks.
It sucks that he get’s hurt for the season just as he is starting to show his potential. I hope the injury doesn’t keep him from being here next year. he looks like he could become something special. He definitely has the physical tools.
BTW: I don’t think he is brittle. That was a tough landing on his neck. That would seriously injure most players. I think the fact that he kept playing is a testimony to his toughness.

Earlier in the season and preseason
when the protections weren’t any good, the ball was coming out more quickly than Cottam expected it, and more poorly placed. When Cassel gets time in the pocket, Cottam could be a dominant force. But the flip side of that 6’7’’ frame is when he plays all out, it’s a long way to the ground!
Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.
Give him some time
He will be a great TE with more experience. I have real faith in Brad.
I have more than I ever did, now that I've seen what can happen off the play-fake, in particular.
I STILL want to see better all-around play. Better blocking. I don’t want him to be a weak link in the running game. But the 2 TE sets seemed to do some good in the run-game already this year, and with both TEs able to catch the ball, that’s a pretty flexible personnel group.

Chase Coffman ... I know, we didn't draft him, and that's my issue ... we COULD have have TonyG, Jr
as far as Cottam & Cottam, you have two conflicing scouting reports (one says “soft hands” other says “not that good”) but both (and your own statement) say long term project …
this team can’t afford a “project” and waste a pick just to have “brothers” on the team … Brad is hurt and who knows what his future is, or where … what you propose is a luxury for a good team, even a 500 level team … we’re not that good, not even close
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
The post wasnt directed to just having "brothers" on the same time
both reports state that he is a good blocker and I wasnt trying to say draft him for his hands it was for his blocking skills.I guess my statement said long term but I dont think it would take that much work if he is already a good blocker. And no the scouting reports do not conflict the second one just said he doesnt have as goodof hands as his brother. This was striclty to add a blocking tight end for a cheap price.
Nice Post.
Same things might’ve been said about Kevin Boss pre-draft.
