For those of you that weren't in on this thread, I thought I'd point out that KC won't have too much competition for the best NTs availalble, at first glance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...
NE(Wilfork/Brace), Pitt (Hampton), Dallas(Ratliff), GB (Raji/Pickett), SF(Franklin), SD (Williams), NYJ (Jenkins), CLE(Rogers), Balt (Ngata), Mia (Ferguson) (when healthy)-have NT covered

Oak, Tam, StL, Indy, NO, Jac, Atl, Hou, Ten, ARI, DET, Cin, SEA, PHI, Car, NYG, Minn, Chi, Buffalo, Washington all run some version of the 4-3 or "other" defense

KC and Denver could be the only teams REALLY looking for a NT to start for them. Others could draft for depth, of course... or to get younger, like Miami, Pittsburgh, San Diego.

IF I'm correct here, and Hampton and Wilfork hit FA... the Chiefs' odds of landing Williams or Cody in the 2nd round end up being decent....as do their odds of signing Wilfork or Hampton!

I disagree

everyone wants some depth if they have the pick.
We took Jackson last year and then grabbed Magee the 2nd guy too.
Not a chance either make it to 2nd round IMO
Minnesota has a NT Williams yet they don’t run a true 3-4.
A 3-4 NT can Play a 4-3 DT too

We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

valid points

however, do you draft a “depth” player in the first round?
I don’t think so.

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

like trezelle jenkins?

The only players I hurt with my words are the ones who have an inflated opinion of their ability. I can't worry about that.

bust does not equal drafting for depth

he was originally drafted as depth but ended up being a bust

i didn’t agree with it then and certainly don’t now but some people do draft for depth in the first round

I agree with the reasoning yet back on the original post was a much better reply on why 3-4 NT is a hot commodity

oh, this one? it wasn't posted until after the fanshot, but it is good
I’m not sure KC and Denver are alone in the NT hunt… San Diego – Jamal Williams is 33, injured and his contract expires after next year. They might be picking fairly late, and could consider one of the 2 NTs a value pick.

Miami – Jason Ferguson is 34 and a FA this offseason. Their backup, Soliai, is a servicable backup, but not dominant. They should be picking in the mid to late teens, and could take the top NT on their board.

Pittsburgh – Casey Hampton is 31 and a FA this offseason. The backup, Chris Hoke, is 33 and a FA after next season. They could be looking NT in the 1st if they are picking mid to late teens.

Also, I don’t think just because a team is running a 4-3 they wouldn’t be interested in Dan Williams or even Terrence Cody to play a run stuffer role similar to Pat Williams in Minnesota, who is 36 btw.

Miami fans (phinsider) seem to be calling for Cody, or a LB

so, they could easily be in the hunt, and Parcells thinks like Pioli (or the other way around)

Pittsburgh and San Diego are possibilities as well.

the thing is, though… there will be possibly 2 VERY good NTs in FA.
IF we’re right, and Miami, Pitt, SD all want to get a younger prospect , they could be looking at Cody and Williams in the draft.

That leaves KC as the prime landing spot for Hampton or Wilfork or Pickett in FA… which would actually be BETTER, IMO than drafting a NT in the 1st/2nd round this year… gives a more immediate impact on the defense, and allows KC to develop a NT from the later rounds.

I spent all day working on YOUR 3 round draft.

only through round 2 at the moment.
1. I was right the NT’s Cody and Williams lasted about 16 picks, Pittsburgh grabbed Williams.
2. KC got Berry yet no NT’s are available now. SD is in same boat, Miami too I think.
3. We got The GT running back, that was sweet.
4. I have St. Louis picking the DE from Florida.
5. The 1st round is all about the Defense this year.
6. All of the QB’s go by middle of 2nd round, rxcept Tebow.
Did I do this right so far?

This just in from the "What if" department...

I’m not usually one to dwell on the past and wasnt one who is still saying “WTF did we trade Jared Allen” but can you imagine if we didn’t and kept a 4-3 defense and were in position to draft Suh this year? Hali – Suh- Dorsey – Allen across the front would be just damn scary.

If Jared were still here...

Our team would have been much better the last couple of years and EVERYTHING would be different. We wouldn’t have had those top picks and it’s pretty likely that Dorsey and T-Jax wouldn’t be here now.

based on MHR (sb site)

Denver fans don’t seem to think their team needs a NT in the draft… they want OL or WR

interesting comment from a Fins fan
I dont believe
for an instant that Parcells takes a NT in round 1 no way. We have 25 yr old nt currentlky starting and will add a rook to split time with him next yr in the mid rounds. A LBer either inside or out will be first pic by the phins

3 new 2010 starting LBers via 2010 draft

They don’t seem deficient in either of those areas.
