What are starting Interior O-lineman worth?
Much has been said about the Chiefs offensive line this year. In the beginning, they were atrocious with a revolving door at Right Tackle and Guard. Bewsaf has done a lot of research on these positions and has showed the improvement at some and the lack of improvement in others. The Majority concensus is that we need upgrading at the interior line spots Center and Guard. Albert and O'Callahan have showed sufficient growth in the new Zone-Blocking scheme that maybe we need to just let them continue to develope as Jon Yoon suggests. Might I add my thoughts to this discussion in a look back at 2008 and 2009?
In the 2008 NFL Draft, Walter Football had 21 players graded out to top 6 rounds, give or take. 9 were Centers and 12 were Guards. Of these players 5 have become everyday starters in the NFL trenches. Some have become starters at positions other than C/G or became Guards instead of Centers.
- Branden Albert 1st 15th pick 26 games 26 starts
- Chilo Rachal 2nd 39th pick 21 games 18 starts
- Mike Pollak 2nd 59th pick 25 games 20 starts
- John Sullivan 6th 187th pick 29 games 13 starts
- Donald Thomas 6th 195th pick 14 games 13 starts
Of the remaing 16 players: 5 are currently not in the league, 3 are on practice squads, 6 are on rosters across the league with a combined 6 games played in not started. Chad Rinehart with Washington has 4 starts, 6 total, and Jamey Richard of Indianapolis has 23 games played in and 7 starts but no starts in 2009. Little sink or swim IMO.
In the 2009 NFL Draft, Walter Football had 18 players graded out in the top 6 rounds, give or take. 8 were Centers and 10 were Guards. Of these players 5 have become everday starters. The Interesting thing is that half of the Centers are playing most every Sunday. The Guards have not panned out so lucky.
- Alex Mack 1st 21st pick 13 starts
- Eric Wood 1st 28th pick 10 starts
- Max Unger 2nd 49th pick 13 starts
- Andy Levitre 2nd 51st pick 13 starts
- Louis Vasquez 3rd 78th pick 11 starts
The remaining 13 players: One was undrafted and 1 was cut. 4 are on practice squads. The remaing 7 players have combined for 4 games played.
Conclusion. If we want impact O-line players to help us next year. Year 1, We need to draft em in the top 100 picks. Luckily for us we have probably 5 picks to get it done. Now what. Mocking Dan over at Mockingthedraft.com has his top 100 players and there are some good choices to get those two day-one starters if we want them.
- Maurkice Pouncey C Fla 6'5 318 should project as top Center
- Stefan Wisniewski C Penn St 6'3 297 as of yet undeclared
- Mike Johnson LG Alabama 6'6 305 can definitely reach the 2nd level in run blocking
- Kris O'Dowd C USC 6'5 300 also undeclared
- Mike Iupati G Idaho 6'5 330 Idaho a definite mauler, not sure if ZB is his thing
- Mike Pouncey G Fla 6'5 320 Mocking Dan projects as 75th best prospect
I guess the caveat in this is to look at the Buffalo Bills. Eric Wood and Andy Levitre I think have performed well yet the team not so much. Will it require that type effort to make our Offensive Line dominent like we once had here in Kansas City?

We might have some
options at the guard position, but we absolutely have to get a Center in this draft or in FA….I like Wisniewski and O’Dowd. Good read Steve……..
Thanks
Waiting to see if either declare. But, Pouncey might be more highly regarded even if they do.
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)

But to follow that point
We have Albert, O’Callaghan, Richardson, and Colin Brown to use and develope.
Grabbing a RT prospect seems to be a wish rather than a need to me. More picks for other needs IMO. Just Two to fix our O-line for years. One 2nd, and a 3rd or 4th:)

I see better where your comment in another thread was coming from.
I’m about done wishing for Richardson to develop. And I’m not as high on Colin Brown as a T prospect.
So I’m not as sanguine as you are about T, in the first place. Therein lies the disconnect in our views. Others have said this is a better year for finding a tackle of the future in the 2nd or 3rd. So the two picks I’d spend fairly early for OL would be C and T, and I’d look for a mentor C in FA, who can play at a high level, but isn’t expected to stay in the league much longer.
Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.
Mawae
is antique like me, just grab your guy and plug him in and let him develop.
Next year doesn’t look like THE year does it? and Pouncey or Wisniewski can probably outperform and Vet that is available anywho:)

I know you look more closely at these prospects early than I do, Steve.
Mawae still moves very very well. Spend one 2nd-rounder on the best C. Gives you quality-in-depth at C, which KC doesn’t have, at this time. I’m still thinking spend a 2nd or a 3rd on a developmental tackle. Your 1st-year C dukes it out for G, and you have somebody to reasonably push O’Callaghan at RT. I think the Chiefs have done enough at G (counting Colin Brown as a G prospect, at this point), if they get dominant at C and T.
O’Callaghan’s lately been showing real growth in his game, but I’d like to review his run-blocking stats in correlation to the men he faced. I’m not sure just how much of his recent high grades are changes in him and how much is strength of opposition. Add to that the fact that on a team that just wanted him to play G, Ndukwe received very high marks in Miami last year. That tells me that there oughta be enough G talent already on the roster, if they just quit trying to make their best G play tackle.

Yup.
But, strictly speaking, combos relates to only who’s on the field. Permutations count who’s on the field and where they line up. Hate to see anybody hurt, since I SO want them to beat the Browns, but I have to admit, it’ll be good to see who does what. Likely we’ll see Wade Smith at one of the guard spots and Ndukwe get another look at RT, and then see what my eyes (and Bewsaf’s) tell me about the result.

I don’t spend much time on ANY of the mock draft sites, right now, but bein’ here on AP has me at least giving the scouting reports a first read in December, rather than February/March. :o)

O'Dowd hasn't been very good
He’s been unreliable on the interior, and there have been exchange problems between him and both of the USC QBs. He battled injuries a little, too. I think the main reasons he’s regarded as a potential first-round pick are his recruiting hype and how he played last season. If we were going mostly on this season’s performance, he’d be considered a middle-rounder IMO.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 19, 2009 10:05 PM CST reply actions
Begs the question
Could he be a dominent 1st year Guard.
All programs have the hype factor, yet at the end of every season the REAL hype machine kicks in and some guy that hasn’t done anything for years is PROJECTED as the REAL deal. Thats why I like to look at projected players now while I can see them play in Championships and Bowl games against other real deal players. Mike Pouncey with his brother Maurkise made Terrence Cody average. Not that others haven’t before but I SAW it. Suh was dominant I saw that. Look forward to watching McCoy vs Mike Johnson in the NCAA championship. Arenas vs Shipley. My point is that only about 5 Interior lineman have the skill and the LUCK to get to start from day one. If we want them and will play them if we get them All the better for us.

McCoy vs. Mike Johnson?
Gerald McCoy plays for Oklahoma. Yeah, I know, bad choice on his part.
Anyway, the matchup against Mike Johnson will probably be Lamarr Houston, who is a 6’1" 300lbs. converted defensive end. He’s had a terrific season, and while he’s probably not a terrific prospect for KC, he’s getting talk as a possible nose guard or 5-tech.

Maybe I was misunderstood
In this draft with so much talent being moved forward by a year due to CBA negotiations.
Some fine beef is going to be pushed lower in the draft. With 3 or 4 wins we need that beef to get out of Bewsaf’s loser league. Maybe two at most of these 6 will be a 1st rounder, maybe none. We have approx.
5th
37th
48th
69th
105th

with the draft this year
some good players will slide back. Again, it depends on what we do in FA. If we get a good FA Center we won’t need to reach too high for 1 in the draft
Heck, I’d go FA AND draft the best C. And another T prospect, depending on how the marksmanship-vs-scattergun thing worked out.

yeah
i just don’t want to see both out 2nd rounders on the OL, maybe a 2nd and 3rd. I would absolutely LOVE it if Golden Tate fell to our first second round pick. Good KR/PR and another offensive weapon for Cassel
I think KC would do well to get elite speed when and where it can.
DB or WR, I wouldn’t much care. Whoever has the most value, as long as the trenches are honored.

That eliminates Tate, then
He’s great at a number of things, but his speed isn’t all that good. I think he’s definitely worth a pretty solid day-one pick, but I’d look elsewhere if I’m Al Davis.

I guess I just read things differently.
I see names, there, who would be very very good value in the 3rd or even the 4th, able to push O’Callaghan. Maybe that 4th-rounder, even. I just fail to see why Ndukwe shouldn’t be the starting RG next year. And I don’t see anybody already on the roster making a convincing push to challenge O’Callaghan.
I DO expect to see a big FA signing, either at C or NT. Possibly both. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see the 2nd round devoted to those same two positions. And I think you go T before you go G, once C is addressed. A FA C and a draft pick C fixes C and G right away, even assuming Ndukwe can’t win the RG job. I think KC needs impact at C and depth at T more than anything else, right now, and plenty of G talent to finish it off. Re-visit again in 2011.

Those are the only three I think should be in contention for a first-round pick at this point. Barksdale…is he even a senior? He seems like he could use more development in college. I’m not positive, but I think he was a HS defensive tackle before transitioning.

I did just double-check
And it looks like I had the right Barksdale. He was a five-star prospect at defensive tackle, at least by Rivals’ rating of him. He’s definitely one of the more athletic guys out there, and would at worst make a good project, depending on where he could be had. But I do think he’d have a great chance of being a fairly early (top 50) pick if he were to return for his senior season and enter in 2011.

Heh.
I’ve seen Albert run pass rushers 10 yards down the field on a line, only to have that STILL not be enough to get it past Cassel, because the middle was blown up. I think the biggest weakness in Albert’s pass protections are being beaten to the inside, because he has to work so much harder to ensure he won’t be beaten to the outside. A lot of that goes away by holding more firmly up the middle more often AND being on the same page as the RB. I’m actually feeling pretty OK about Branden at LT, right now.

Yes i have...
and my post said that" I know a lot factors into it"…I just think he would be better at G….comparing a RB to a LT just seems a little…off target ,to me
I just thought it was funny
most RB’s don’t get tagged like that.
Albert played very well last year in Gailey’s Offense at 340 lbs.
I hope that he returns to that with a year of running the ZB scheme at 310 lbs.
Plus if Cassel will just Throw the damn ball
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

Im not the first person to suggest..
that Albert should go back to G…I know that this yr he is our best option at LT, but, if they take an O-Lineman next yr in the first(which I think they have to do to protect the 60 mill man) then they should take Ohkung and move Albert. It would give Cassel a little more time to….throw the damn ball!
Do you see anyone better to move Albert to Guard in the draft?
Okung is a spread LT, exactly the same thing that the Chiefs are trying to convert Albert out of.

LOGIC! I bite you with my wit-fangs. You will not prevail.
I disagree with the premise that KC takes OL in the 1st.

Honestly...
As long as it is addressed in the offseason, whether through the draft, or FA, I dont really care. But it cant go ignored again
Lots of these
