Chiefs Game Blacked Out Against the Browns
The Kansas City Chiefs will not be shown on television in the Kansas City area for the first time in 19 years.
The Chiefs confirmed today that Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns did not sell enough tickets to satisfy the league's definition of a sellout.
Details on trying to watch the game after the jump.
As you know, this means that the game will not be shown on TV within a 75 mile radius around the city. That radius includes Topeka and St. Joe.
This means everything. NFL Sunday Ticket and DirecTV will NOT air the game within this radius.
Kansas City residents will instead be shown the Miami vs. Tennessee game at noon on CBS.
Am I in the 75 mile radius?
If your zip code is on this list, then it's blacked out for you.
- Missouri Blackout Radius - Zip Code - Alphabetical
- Kansas Blackout Radius - Zip Code - Alphabetical
Where to go to watch the game?
- Wichita, Omaha, Jefferson City-Columbia, Springfield, Pittsburg, Dodge City/Hays, Sioux City, IA.
- You watch the game starting at midnight on NFL.com.

If you don't want to drive 75 miles
There is the option C: a few tickets are available at the box office the day of the game.

No love
for the Fanshot or reporting at noon that the NFL denied the team an extension. I suspect I am being persecuted for ending the fantasy football playoof dream of one Mr Chris Thorman

I will be at Arrowhead
but the rest of KC will be kicking it old school, listening via radio. It is going to be strange not having the Chiefs on TV… oh well I hope this sends a message at least.

ABQ Chief here.....this is just sad!
I usually only get to see 2 Chief games per year on TV in Albuquerque, both Donkey games! Now I have the NFL Sunday Ticket and get my 5 years olds decked out in Chiefs red and we have only won 3 games. How do I justify the NFL Sunday Ticket with that performance? My wife is already on me about having the ticket with such an under-performing team. Let’s just say I am in fierce negotiations, lol! Sorry to hear about the blackout in KC, with that being said lets beat those Browns!

If you're willing to spend $20 you can get Game Rewind from nfl.com
& watch all the games from this year or last year (as long as there are no other live games). It’s pretty nice.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010
Well... this has been 3 years in the making.
I’m kind of glad the streak ended. It’s a joke to say that this Chiefs team has “sold out” all these games. Last week was a “sell out” with only about 40,000 fans in the stadium. Almost every game this entire year has has been missing at least 10,000 fans.
Again, I’m glad the streak is over. The Chiefs don’t deserve to own the bragging rights of a hundred-and-ninety-or-whatever sold out games. Not with the play they’ve given us lately. Us fans have carried them as far as we can. They need to give us something in return.
Good. The streak is over. Hopefully the organization takes note of this and does something about it. Fix this team, and the sell outs will return.
This is a good opportunity for the Chiefs to finally and entirely cut ties with the old era and start a new one. Let’s make 2010 the year that the Chiefs start their climb back towards being one of the elite in the NFL.

I still don't see how having blackouts can possibly help a team
I remember when we used to have blackouts all the time in the 80s. You know who talked about the Chiefs? No one. They were out of sight and out of mind.
My dad was hardcore Chiefs fan and he would try to catch them on the radio when they were blacked out at home, but sometimes he’d forget (can we imagine forgetting a Chiefs game now?) and it was like “Oh well”.
If the Chiefs continue to be bad next year and are blacked out more consistently, people will begin to forget about them and find other things to do. It happened before, will happen again.
Yeah, but that was in the days before the internets.
And, the NFL has become such a mega giant of entertainment that no team will ever really be “out of sight, out of mind”.

I dunno
How in depth can you really talk about a game that you haven’t seen?
Listening on the radio all you have to go by is the broadcasters opinions. Thats all fine and dandy, but it doesn’t tell the whole story or allow people to DVR it and go back and watch particular plays over.
Well...
For one, we thankfully have two of the best game broadcasters ever in Mitch and Lenny. They both do a great job describing the game.
Two, apparently NFL.com will eventually play the game (at midnight ).
Three, ESPN and the NFL Network will recap the game.
Four, like I said before, the internet makes a big difference compared to 20 years ago. We can get in depth stats while the game is being played.
I’m just saying, the NFL has become such a mega giant in the entertainment world that blackouts, while they do suck, won’t do much to cripple a fanbase. Especially one as proud and strong as ours. The Chiefs ought to take this as a warning and get this team under control. Clark’s not going to sit on his hands and continue to get revenue through a bad team. His father raised him better than that. This team is going to get better.

Clark’s not going to sit on his hands and continue to get revenue through a bad team. His father raised him better than that.
Perhaps you don’t remember, but it was Clark’s father that allowed the Chiefs to be a horrible team for nearly 20 years in the 70s and 80s.
I know that us, the hardcore fans will do whatever it takes to get our Chiefs fix and I have no doubt AP will keep us all up to speed.
But the average fan is fickle. I live in a small town that lives and breathes the Chiefs when they are doing well. Every business has Red Friday and every Monday everyone is talks about the game.
But when the team is bad, that all disappears. It is a small leap for them to stop watching the Chiefs get slaughtered and switch to watching KU.
I’m just saying that if it takes more than another season or so to get things straightened out, it may be a very different experience with different fans than what we have been used to the last 20 years.
Ok.
You got me there. The 80’s were bad. But it’s Lamar freaking Hunt man. You can’t question that the man absolutely loved football. He founded the NFL. He dubbed the term “Super Bowl”. The 80’s were bad, yes, but I wouldn’t question for one minute that Lamar didn’t work to make the team better. He did bring in Peterson and Marty when all was said and done. I’m just saying that Clark was raised by a man that loved his Chiefs. This team isn’t going to stay down forever.
You’re right that if this team doesn’t start to get better fast, then the experience will change. But I don’t think we’ll have a problem there. Clark knew this was coming. Peterson’s plan wasn’t working, and the fans were actively voicing their displeasure so he dumped him and got the #1 GM prospect of the last 5 years. He knows that the fanbase is getting unruly. Whether or not the new regime can turn this around remains to be seen, but I don’t get the sense that Clark is going to sit back and watch this happen. He wants this team to win, and he wants them to win it all.

I have only got to see 2 games ALL year up here. I flew home for the Dallas game and got to witness that game from arrowhead! Been listening to mitch and lenny for all other games! Its been very painfull. All I want for Christmas is a GREAT 2010 draft and GOOD free agent signings!

yep
got directv this year but before then it was 2-5 games a year on tv(division games) and I would travel to 2-3 games a year…
I went to 3 this year…I just hope that people can still support them…I think Charles will make this weekend worth watching…
Question for people who can't figure out how to watch the game.
Why don’t you go to the game?
I’m sorry if that sounded dickish, but there is a vicious circle. Everyone wants people to go to the games so that they are televised, but they rather watch them on TV so they don’t go to the games.

I wouldn't demand anyone buy tickets to watch this team
When you’re talking about several hundred dollars investment to go to a game to watch the kind of performance we’ve seen the last couple years, I don’t blame anyone for not going. I’m honestly surprised it took so long to blackout.
I’m not for sure if I will get blacked out or not, we are right on the edge. We used to always get blacked out in the 80s, but I didn’t see our zip code on the list, so maybe we will get by this time. Of course the local channel is out of Joplin, so probably not.
Does this mean they'll finally drop the ticket prices?
in other words – undo what peterson did to us in the raising of ticket prices.
Prediction: Tamba gets 10 sacks this year.
They are cheap on ebay
like under $25 per for lower level tickets. I’d be all over it if I were still living in KC.
But I think the face value is pretty expensive.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010
Yeah I agree
It was such a great experience on the occasions I was able to go in the ’90s.
It’s hard to blame people for not wanting to pay $100+ per ticket (plus concessions & parking) for a bad team though.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009

yeah
I understand it, I just….going to games in KC…ive been almost everywhere else, and nothing matched KC’s intensity and sea of red….I just dont want us to continue to be a joke and players to feel dejected looking at empty seats…but when you lose back to back to division opponents by…30…I can understand…doesnt make it less sad though.
yep
maybe if it seemed like if more than 3 people were fighting hard the game wouldn’t be blacked out…just saying
but yeah it does freaking suck
seems like we are at the lowest of lows right now….
but that means we can only go up from here right?
We're 8th in average ticket price
$80.69/seat
NFL average is $74.99
Very unlikely prices are lowered. This almost never happens. We’re unlike to see an increase this year however.

The last report I saw had us at 21st in the League
and that was before Peterson lowered the price on thousands of the (worst seats) last year…
those #'s are screwed
the season tickets i have now are 39$ each if bought individually it was 700$ for 10 games and 2 seats
there were also several thousand 25 dollar seats i just didnt feel like a Sherpa
i had awesome season tickets on the 40 yard line, front row , 3rd level that an uncle just didnt go anymore and let us buy them they were 54 dollars
you can even sit on the bottom level for less than 80.69 a game the only seats that are that much are club level and all the prime lower level stuff
in all reality you can get two 25 dollar seats , 2 regular cokes, bottomless popcorn and parking for 82 dollars
by Bleedzredngold on Dec 18, 2009 12:36 AM CST up reply actions
Not from the Chiefs you can't
you have to go through a reseller to get that cheap of seats, and that doesn’t help the team sellout. you’re just buying someone elses trash. and $80 to see a terrible team is still too damn much. I don’t think I’ll even be listening on the radio.
If you only knew...
I know
that everyone wants to say its ok, you shouldnt want to watch this team. To me its not ok that arrowhead did not sell out…this team still needs support, through thick and thin, I think maybe a ticket price decrease in a year where they didnt go spend a lot of cash would have been neat, but still…we dont want to become charger fans….no one respects fair weather fans.
Just because we didn't sell out doesn't make us fair weather.
This team honestly had it coming. Why should we be expected to spend a bunch of money on a team that has only won 25% of their games over teh last 3 seasons? And in an economy where people are losing their jobs and houses? No way man. Not buying tickets to watch THIS team isn’t fair weather. It’s logical.

Well I hope all the fair weather fans are happy. You don't have to see Cassel or Haley "SUCK".
So I hope I don’t read anything from you next week.

THIS REFLECTS POORLY ON THE HUNT FAMILY.
I don’t care what you say about our team, the economy, or whatever. Clark Hunt should have prevented this. We only had one game to go.
Way to thank Jackson County for the tax hike so that you could renovate your fathers stadium. This does not put you in a favorable light Clark, and I hope someone calls you tonight at your mansion in Dallas and chews you out.

I am a bit confused by the fact that he couldnt get some business or businessman to buy up the tickets
I mean, I knew of coaches with the vermeil team that traded their 2 tickets for furniture, and the other 2 for a new leased car free land rover every…3 months. sad to see the decline and lack of someone to step up and take the hit for the sake of becoming a further joke
They've been doing that for the last couple years
You can only keep this thing on life support for so long before you might as well let it go. Look how many empty seats there have been most of the season. Somebody has been buying those unused seats all season.
Its a game in the dead of winter against a team that (possibly) is even worse than we are. I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to go.

you're right, it isn't true.
themselves or their interests (the hunt family owns several businesses) could buy the tickets.
Jackson County is paying higher taxes for the stadium renovations, and the very citizens that are feeling this tax increase won’t even get to watch the game. In what universe is that fair?
I'm not a Cassel fan or a Tamba Hali Fan or a Jamaal Charles fan. I'm a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Well
whos fault is it that we arent going to the games? Ours.
Too many lose sight of the fact that we HAVE a football team..and as proud of history as we have, its sad that people are turning their backs to the franchise. Its a whole new front office, coaching staff, schemes, and a ton of new players. We all knew this was going to be a long season. We’re getting all that junk and Vermeil and Herm piled on over the years and throwing it out. Give them time to turn it around. They’ve been here 11 months.
Think about all the other cities that dont have a football team. We’re lucky enough to have one and because we’ve had a few rough years, they’ve lost countless supporters. Did you know that before we went 4-12 with herm, we were the ONLY team in the whole league besides the Steelers that had not lost more than 10 games in a season? We had it good for the 17 years before the last 3 seasons. We’re just paying out dues at the bottom of the league like every other team has (other than the steelers) since 1989.
Sooo....

all I know is this sucks
By blacking it out isnt the nfl really hurting themselves from the money they get for games being on tv. I mean how many people in the veiwing area arent going to watch any football on tv this weekend now because the Chiefs game isnt on, that means lower ratings for tv stations which means less money for the nfl doesnt it. And I dont think the players will get any message by the game not being on tv, I think the message would be more clear to them if the stands are empty when they walk out of tunnel on to the field.
I wish I could afford to buy a ticket and go watch them, but with being let go from my job 2 months ago and unemployment fucking me over I just cant do it this year. Even when they lose its still fun to go but its a hell of alot better when they win.
From Direct TV...
n special situations, a local station may decide at the last minute to show a different game, in which case we will change the NFL SUNDAY TICKET blackouts when permitted by the NFL.If a local station switches coverage due to a one sided or extra-long game, we will lift the blackouts (when permitted by the NFL) so that you will get the game in the 700’s…..let’s hope that someone besides us gets blown out
If you will it dude....It is no dream - Jeffery Lebowski
Stream it live
I live in Topeka and I am a season ticket holder and I will be there.
I am also a MIZZOU fan. Since I live in Topeka I don’t get to see alot of their games on TV, BUT here is a web site that does live streaming, as long as any sports game is broadcasting somewhere, they will have usually have it avaible for streaming. Here it is
http://www.channelsurfing.net/
I tried to help!
I couldnt buy all the tickets. But I got 6 and was able to convince 5 other people to go with me.
Great day for Chiefs fans!!!!
Finally the organization is going to see that fans in KC won’t support just any team forever. There are standards and this is a statement by the fans telling the organization they haven’t met them….good thing I live in Chicago too!

No fair weather fan here ill be there
its kinda funny to me that most chiefs fans would support carl and herms circus enough to avoid a blackout during there tenure and then not support the guys who have to come in and clean that crap up
I grew up knowing that chiefs fans were the baddest in the land and easily the most feared
by teams visiting arrowhead and thought that we might give the new guys at least a year before we start acting like chargers fans
People are sick of the losing
and getting nothing in return for spending hundreds (possibly thousands) of dollars a year the last 3 years.

I had season tickets growing up in KC, and I had them for the year that I was stationed at Fort Leavenworth (last year in the Army, not bunking up with Vick!), but I haven’t been back to a game at Arrowhead since 07. I miss it.
