Let's start over shall we?

Good morning AP. First I want to tell NJ I hope you have a great time on your cruise. It's a bit too early for Merry Christmas just yet. But we will miss you. You deserve a vacation, so relax and enjoy. Allrighty then. I was thumbing through the Yahoo Sports this morning and reading up on Chris Henry and his situation. I want to wish Chris well and a speedy recovery. Oh and also come back as a Chief next year.

Anyway, it is very obvious that the Matt Cassel debate is stronger than ever on AP and around KC. I was not aware the Pioli debate was still raging strong however. I love to debate as much as the next guy. I have my favorite's on here that I love to bump heads with. Although sadly we will be losing someone I considered to be a friend and a welcome addition to AP. Patrick Allen you will be missed brother.

Star-divide

I was going to jump back into the post about Matt Cassel this morning because there are 45 new comments. Hard to believe really. But then I stopped myself. I got this excited little butterfly thing going on in my stomach for a second. Not because I have anything else to say about Matt Cassel. I am officially done with that discussion.

I will not comment on anything more to do with Cassel the rest of the season. Here's why!

I think this last off season was one of the most exciting for us here in KC. I know you guys felt like I did every time someone new was welcomed to the Red and Gold. Especially Cassel and Pioli. I know text messages were flying at the speed of light when Carl got canned (resigned whatever)! I know they were flying again when we got the Pioli news. And I'd bet we slowed the phone systems down around the U.S. when Cassel and Vrabel came on board.

First off, Hoodie is a genius. He would never have let the next Tom Brady slip away with Vrabel for a 2nd round pick. That being said. Pioli is a genius and he never would have given up our desperately needed 2nd round pikc for a schmuck QB. Right? Ok. Let's go with that because it's positive.

So from here on out the debate on Cassel is closed for me. Because AP we are about to enjoy THE single most exciting off season in the last 20 years. If you think last year was great, hang on to your hats. You KNOW Pioli knows how we fans feel right now. You know he's under the spotlight. You know he has an ego the size of Arrowhead.

I don't think we should be complaining about his ego. It may be our best friend in years to come. I just cannot see Pioli winning all those awards for Exec of the year while at NE being a fluke. Even more so I cannot see him allowing his reputation to be tarnished by screwing up his first GM job. So take heart. We have more to agree on and to celebrate together than we do to fight about.

Really the Cassel debate at this point in the season is meaningless. What's going to happen is going to happen and we aren't going to change that. If Pioli wants to keep him he will. If he wants to draft a super stud out of college and groom him, he will. So why are we fighting? Look it's sad that our off season is more exciting than our season is. I agree. But hell, the season is almost over. No more tortured Sundays. No more Monday morning sad posts. NO more Tuesday war zone on AP.

Our best time of the season so far is coming. Our Christmas gift is about to be unveiled. Pioli did a nice job so far of stacking up draft picks. Now we know for a fact that if Cassel is surrounded by a high quality well coached team he can excel. I would love an 11-5 record next year wouldn't you? So instead of bashing Cassel (yes I raised my hand) let's start over and concentrate on getting him that dynamic team next year. So what if he can only excel with a Patriots or Colts type team. That's what we want here in KC anyway isn't it? We want a team that is as elite as the Colts, Saints or Pats don't we? So then who cares about the Cassel thing anymore.

If that's what he needs to excel then let's get him that team and surround him with the "right 53" this year. And let's surprise everyone in our division and in the football world and whip that a** next year. Hey, the offseason is coming soon and we are going to have one hell of an exciting time together. In fact my email is chris_ratley2010@yahoo.com and I invite all of you to drop me a line and I'll put you in my contacts and we can write each other when we get that exciting news about who is coming to KC to play ball next year.

It's Christmas, the SB and then the offseason again. Let's bury the hatchet all of us and start fresh we have so much to look forward to. Whadda ya say AP....get over here and give me a hug!!

Nice perspective!

"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."

Nice job Kray.

I hope you are right aboput this off season. we need to make a splash like we have never seen before. Lots of moves in FA and a killer draft. New Coordinators and plenty of time for practice.

But this was a GREAT post. We just need time. I know none of us want to hear that, being impatient and what-not, but patience, time, and support of our team are most critical right now.

ummmm a hug????

[insert random homophobic joke here]…. I don’t think Cassel was a bad pick up, I just wish we had waited a year to pay him. Most people realized the chiefs were going to struggle this year, with our lack of talent Cassel was bound to have a year like this. What would he contract look like if we negotiated it after this year. Think about how much money we’d have to play with if he were on a 20 mil contract instead of a 63 mil contract. I think he has the ability to be an above average QB, Frankly, if you’re in the NFL, you can play. It’d be nice to have an above average QB being paid like a below average QB.

by callmesir on Dec 17, 2009 9:21 AM CST reply actions

but Cassels contract is average, and his play is about average right now.

With an awful team. Once we get more tools, I’m not saying he’ll blow up into Peyton Manning but he will be considerably better. He’s proven that already.

I'm not a Cassel fan or a Tamba Hali Fan or a Jamaal Charles fan. I'm a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.

by jk86 on Dec 17, 2009 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

I'd say his contract

is considerably better than average with considerably below average production. with just above average talent.

by callmesir on Dec 17, 2009 10:53 AM CST up reply actions

His contract 12-15 for QB's in the NFL.

isn’t that about the middle? and he has no talent whatsoever. picking up WR off of waivers every week and starting them after 2-3 practices is a glaring admission that your team has no talent.

I'm not a Cassel fan or a Tamba Hali Fan or a Jamaal Charles fan. I'm a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.

by jk86 on Dec 17, 2009 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

One thing to consider is that the only figure that really matters is the guaranteed money in a contract

For instance, some years ago Ty Law signed some ridiculous number of millions of dollars in contracts in something like two years. If he made more than 15 million between the two, I’d be stunned.

If you think of it as 3-year, 28 million dollar contract it’s a lot easier to swallow – it is a little more complex than that, but it’s a very friendly deal, especially considering that Cassel would have made more than 14 million in one year under the franchise tag. I don’t think Cassel’s contract has handcuffed the Chiefs in any way from making moves this offseason.

by DanielUM on Dec 17, 2009 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

I think there may be some merit to waiting that year to pay him idea

I am not sure about locking up his services after that initial year, but do we really have a good grasp on who he really is after this seasons disaster? I think we all agree that not all of the offensive struggles are his fault. Remember Trent Green had a rough first year here in KC also.

I agree it's not all his fault...

but when you come to the negotiating table with a stat line like his… you’re not gonna get much money…

agreed

but it would have been more favorable to both sides after this year as you were implying I think.

because we all realistically understand that we’re terrible. offense, defense, you name it. it’s got problems, baby! :) But I got to thinking about it last night and this team COULD have 5 wins right now (Raiders 1 and Dallas). I know we aren’t supposed to play the hypothetical game but we led both late into the game….

We COULD have had 8 wins last year.

6 games by a TD or less. Both SD games by a total of 2 points.

Using that arguement, Herm’s better than Haley. I don’t think that’s what you mean.

just as I’ll speak out against the government of this great nation of ours when I think there’s an injustice being done, and yet still love my country … I’ll speak out against what I see as “wrongs” by management of this great team of ours, and even though they may be losign (ok, they ARE losing) I still love my Chiefs

even the Chalupa? oh man!!

I believe it though. I thought last years off season was fun. It turned out to be disappointing but I thought it was fun at the time. I figures since we lost most of our games by 10 points or less, just bringing Cassel would be enough. Vrabel just sweetened the pot. But man was I wrong.

So I believe this off season will be fun. If Pioli does his job. I can’t wait to watch the draft.

as a mortal enemy, krafish, i will not be giving you any hugs any time soon =)

but i can appreciate you trying to put on a happy face and begin to look forward to what the chiefs can become. i think there are many things that need to be addressed this offseason and i believe most of them will be. i’m almost certain we will hire an offensive coordinator, probably a new defensive coordinator, improve our offensive line and hopefully sprinkle in a few playmakers on offense and defense. 11 wins is tough to predict without seeing what improvements we make and how our schedule shakes out but i do like the optimism. the biggest thing i’m excited about this offseason is getting our qb and receivers all on the same page. this year has been full of instances where the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing, so to speak, so that’s where i think we’ll make our biggest strides imho.

The only players I hurt with my words are the ones who have an inflated opinion of their ability. I can't worry about that.

by kcguy on Dec 17, 2009 9:34 AM CST reply actions

it could be 6 wins this year

if Chambers doesnt drop that pass last week or if D Bowe wasnt out for 4 games. Enough about what could have been, I see us heading in the right direction I mean we already have 1 more win then last year with 3 games to go. So I think we are moving forward and I to believe this offseason will be exciting. Hopefully this time next year we wont be getting ready for draft day already maybe next year they will surprise us, you never know.

Also I to have fun debating with some of you guys on here, but as mentioned we all are on the same team here, we are all just tired of these losing seasons.

by banshee_01 on Dec 17, 2009 9:43 AM CST reply actions

Actually, we could easily have gone 7-9 this year

Oakland x 2, Washington, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Cleveland (Assuming here on the last one) were all games we should have won. It just shows how thin the margin of error is in the NFL. At 7-9 KC would be labeled an Up and Coming team for 2010. At 4-12 it’s just a bad team.

KC WILL be a much improved team next year…more of the ‘right’ free agents will be here, we’ll probably have either the best LT or the best Safety in the draft….plus we have a very YOUNG team as it is, most of these players will be better next season. Add to that the fact that we will be playing the NFC West, which could potentially have 3 or even 4 new starting QBs in the division…I do believe the luck will swing in our favor next season.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

by jmcgoblue on Dec 17, 2009 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

or..

0-16. You make a good point. A team that competes should assume a near .500 record just for showing up each week. It takes something special to lose like we have over the last few years.

And hey I know no body wants to have a team so bad that you can't wait for the offseason

but last offseason was exciting for me. It didn’t turn out the way I hoped once the season got going but it was and gave me a lot of hope. I really believe this year, this offseason coming up will tell all.

If Pioli and Haley can’t find a way then we know. Then we know for sure we got jipped. I don’t mean playoffs. I mean serious improvement. If we give them the standard one year get out of jail free card then this is it. They have to put up or shut up.

Pioli is supposedly the draft master so let’s see what he can do now that he KNOWS what he has to work with here in KC.

But some of they guys ( i assume their fairly new) don’t understand my sense of humor and they keep complaining about me. lol!

So I just promised Joel I would chill for a bit. Don’t worry I have a bottle of anti venom in my flask for later on. I’ll be back. I just can’t stand all the whiners who keep flagging me. God. I feel bad for the moderators cuz their kind about warning me and their sympathetic but they have to atleast respond to flags and it’s time consuming.

I respect the moderator’s too much to keep making their job harder. Especially when I like them so much. So I’m just relaxing a tad for now.

Nicely done, Krayfish...!

I got excited reading that…good stuff. I would like to also add a couple things that have gotten me through the past couple years of having a crappy team as your favorite team. To start, just for the record, the NFL as a sport/organization is the best there is. There is so much drama…it is like the adult/sophisticated version of the WWF or whatever the new professional wrestling league is out there. There are so many story-lines to follow. I should let everyone know that I am a 20 year die-hard Chiefs fan and will ALWAYS be until the day I die. But, in order to keep interest and sanity through the 2/3/4 win seasons, the following suggestions worked for me. But, next year the Chiefs will be BACK BABY to greatness…I want it….I can sense it.

1. Play fantasy football – it makes 4-5 games interesting to watch as opposed to just the Chiefs. FF truly makes Sunday and sometimes Mondays complete.

2. Follow a second team – I know I might get crucified for this, but pick a winning team to follow (it can be based on your fantasy team). This doesn’t degrade your fandome of the Chiefs at all, but it allows you to enjoy good football in a time when your team doesn’t deliver. My friends and I actually picked a team from each of the 8 divisions to follow, and it is in the early stages, but it is pretty interesting so far. Keep in mind that we all have our FAVORITE teams (mine being the Chiefs obviously).

To conclude, I just wanted to say that I am stoked for this offseason cause we should be wheeling and dealing and getting players in key positions. I am hoping for a stud NT via free agency. I want Berry in the first, and Benn (WR – Illinois) in the second. After that I want OL hidden gems (duh right!) and linebackers.

If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

-Steve Nash

by Red Shadow on Dec 17, 2009 11:10 AM CST reply actions

yah fantasy football is great. It does make all the games more exciting. good idea.

I live in Tampa so I also follow the Bucs and yes if they didn’t suck even worse than the Chiefs, you’de be correct there too. LOL !! Just the luck of Krayfish huh? both my teams suck. But the Chiefs are my first and truest team.

I have never actually checked out SB Nation’s buc’s site. I will have to do that.

If there was a column on the right hand side for most flagged and most warnings

like there is for rec’s…I’d be the all time leader. LOL! But I pick on myself as much as I do anybody so I dish it but I can take it too. And privately I usually apologize and end up being good friends with those I bump heads with initially because sincerely, I’m a pretty nice guy. I just have a smartalec sense of humor.

Like for example yesterday someone said something about wishing we wouldn’t call people names like “piece of crap”. I don’t know who even called someone that but other people didn’t like it too much. So when I read the comment asking everyone not to call a player a piece of crap I responded by saying " yeah I prefer douche bag" LOL!

Now you who know me well, know my humor and I’m sure you just took it in stride and laughed. But some of the new guys apparently found it distasteful and I got flagged again. So even though I know I’m just picking on people a little. It’s not fair to the moderators to put them in that position as often as I do and I respect that.

you know where i stand, but your right i cannot imagine Pioli or Haley allowing another embarassing season like this was. I really dont think they knew how bad things were. Their ego’s and pride have to mean more than just a paycheck. I expect alot of changes again in the offseason, especially with the coordinators and assistant coaches. The only problem is, getting some quality players and coaches that want to come here. It should get interesting.

by Sea of RED on Dec 17, 2009 2:40 PM CST reply actions

Yah but to your point...I doubt you will have to worry about that.

Pioli comes with clout. Whether we r on board with him or not, he was the most sought after GM in the business. So his presence alone will make this a place people want to come to. i think people expect him to do great things here and will want to be a part of the next dynasty in the NFL. Yay!

by krayfish on Dec 18, 2009 7:27 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I think that Pioli and Haley pride themselves as finding those “Diamond in the rough” kind of players and with the extreme fluctuation of players that we had this year, we just didn’t jell like they thought that we would. I’m confident that there’ll be much better off season acquisitions than we’ve had over the past year.
