ESPN's McShay has Okung to KC in first mock draft
Kansas City Chiefs
Record: 3-10
Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
Help up front might be Kansas City's greatest need. LOT Branden Albert -- a first-round pick in 2008 -- has had problems staying healthy, and he could slide to the right side or even inside to guard if the Chiefs land a franchise left tackle. Okung is the most complete offensive tackle prospect in this class and could provide that piece of the puzzle for Kansas City.

I like it.
Just talking about this on another thread.
Here is what the line would look like if I had my way.
LT:Okung
LG:Albert
C: O Dowd
RG:Waters
RT: O’Callaghan
By the middle of 2010, this might be a top 3 O-line in the league. Alleman, Smith, and Ndukwe as backups…Domination.
Not impressed with O'Dowd
He lost his job at USC for a while. I guess we’ll see how he grades.
But Okung would be a nice pick. Right now he has to be all alone in the first tier of offensive tackles.

might be the most "O"s on the OL of any team in the league
my only concern would be starting two rookies… no matter how talented, there will probably be some bumps in the road if 2 rookies are counted on to start.
I say get a Center that can start, and stick with Albert, Waters, Ndukwe (or whoever) and O’Call for 2010…
start developing a LG to replace Waters, and an OT that can provide depth and/or beat out the incumbents.
then, draft another starter in the 2011 draft, and develop another player
rinse and repeat
build the line for the long term, piece by piece, without starting all rookies in any given year
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

No on O callaghan. He's a solid backup and if we have to keep him because
we have no choice then ok. But otherwise I would much rather see him in a backup role. However, we cannot fix this whole team this offseason either. It’s not gonna happen. Especially with the uncapped deal. So..I just hope we get the defense where it needs to end up. If we can just get that one piece of the puzzle fixed and out of the way that would be HUGE!
what don't you like about O'Call ?
seems like he grades out very well in Beswaf’s posts…

Albert has trouble staying healthy?
Did I miss something? He’s missed what, 3 games in two years? I guess I didn’t realize that was all that bad.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now. 11/18 Oh My! Dbowe gets a restraining order to stay 1200 yards away from the Chiefs. Argh! Can we go 5-11? Can the defense make #20?
I know right?
Where did that come from? I really wonder where these guys get their info.
Okung would still be a nice upgrade at LT though. I hope he is right about this one.

Although
okung would indeed be an upgrade this team needs more pressing upgrades in different areas. Albert has held his own with little to no help cause waters has to help to the right leaving albert on an island most of the time. i know a dominating left tackle should be able to be put on an island and succeed but look at denvers ryan clady who is supposed to be “dominating” and hali totaled 3 sacks against him and although hali is coming around as a pass rusher he is no demarcus ware or james harrison yet. My point is would you rather have a small upgrade at left tackle or a huge upgrade at safety of lb
well said
I still think Berry is the man if the Chiefs are in the top 5,
McClain would be awesome if they could trade down, or pick out of the top 5
Haden would be a possibility too… get a dominant CB to play opposite Flowers, let Carr work the Nickel….
you never know what Pioli would do

That’s an unfair comparison. Your choice is a small upgrade at LT, plus a huge upgrade at C or G (depending on where Waters ends up versus your huge upgrade at Safety or LB.
Merlinnj
Yup
By upgrading LT you are actually upgrading numerous positions on the line. Waters can play any interior position and Albert would be the best LG in the NFL.
killing several birds with one stone if you will.

Upgrades
I agree with both of you either way if we go with Berry that boosts our D and if we go with Okung then that helps our O-line but we are already paying Albert LT money and I just dont think that Pioli would draft another LT and have to pay a LG 1st round tackle money. But I do see the point everyone is making on both sides. I personally would love to get Berry b/c Mike Brown is not holding his own from what I’ve seen and correct me if i’m wrong please I havent watched many games this year cuz I live in jersey lol.
Berry would be our guy if he is still there but...
Okung is a monster. He and Albert on the left side would be sick.
But
the defense would still get burned on the pass and have little run support, Berry should be the pick unless we trade down
I'd have no problem if Berry is taken
but I think the draft is supposedly pretty deep at safety. Obviously no guarantees with any player, but it may be possible to take Okung and then a very good safety in the 2nd round.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010
Nate Allen would be solid in the 2nd
Okung, Cody, Allen
or
Okung, Allen, O’Dowd
something like that would be nice

Agree that we need Defensive help, but
if we can’t protect the QB, open running lanes, and buy time for 3-5 seconds of looking down field, then we can’t score points and will be a floundering team forever. The offense has to become consistent, solid and be able to score at will. O-line is our most important concern. With FA we can get some dominant Defensive players and with some of the later picks.
O-Line boys. That is what our first and/or second top pick must be.
agreed, kinda
the counter argument is:
you can fix the OL by taking a Center to replace the biggest weakness, that can be found with the 2nd 2nd rounder or LATER…
The #1 pick could then be used on a big-time playmaker on defense, the first 2nd round pick for another OL or NT, or WR

Second Pick could be
but we have a left tackle that isnt bad and we can find dominating guards in fre agency which is what we really need, a center and guard would make this line much better. Defense should be the pick based on positional need and value, Berry should be the pick in the top five or lb outside, possibly mclain

I am really ok with anyone but a QB in the top of the 1st...
We need pass rush really bad, but there is nothing for that up there, it doesn’t seem…
I have not seen Berry play but Safety just never seems like a top 5 pick…it just seems like RB these days…
Don't forget to be an AP-vangelist...Tell A Friend...
I think we have bigger needs.
That said, I wouldn’t be upset if we did do this. It can only help us.
throw a dart at a dart board full of positions...
anywhere it lands will help us.

I think the o line is playing better of late.
One thing about the defensive line and the offensive line of any team is continuity through time. It’s proven that the longer the same set of guys play together and get to know each other’s habits the better the whole unit becomes.
So I think they could bring in a couple new guys and leave it at that and fix the defense next year first. The o line will not save this offense. We would be better on offense right now anyway if Cassel were more accurate and our receivers could catch better and maybe try not getting suspended.
And if we kept the same guys together for more than 2 games at a time so they could get their timing down. The colts are a perfect example of this. They don’t do anything fancy on offense. It’s the same ol thing over and over with them. Simple plays that execute because they have the timing down to a science.
i agree with SOME of your points there
continuity is key, especially on the OL
that’s partially why you’re seeing better play as of late…
continuity AND more comfort level with all of the different protection schemes that Haley put in late, AND the zone blocking change from last season.
I’m strongly leaning towards the scenario of drafting a STARTING center, and some later round depth at G/T… lining up with Albert, Waters, Rookie, Ndukwe, O’Callaghan for 2010
THEN, pick up another piece in 2011, and so on

A win vs Browns...
…changes everything. If we beat browns we will pick between 5-8. No shot at berry or Okung. I am hoping for trade down to acquire more picks but Locker not going into the draft really hurt those chances.

I'd love to see
us pick up Brandon Spikes I think he’d fit well with us in the ILB spot. Him and Belcher i think could really hold it down.
he's highly rated... but
what does he bring that Cory Mays doesn’t?
is he good in coverage?
