Reality

I have been at times the biggest optimist and at other times the biggest pessimist on this web site. I've been a fan since I was 5 with the days of Joe Montana drawing me in. I've stayed a fan through the Grbac years, Gunther as a Head Coach, and of course, Germ. I've seen Eric Warfield play and watched Carl Peterson draft the immortal Ryan Sims, Junior Savaii and Justin Medlock. With all that being said....

Star-divide

I can't stand all of this negative commentary about Matt Cassel, Todd Haley, and Scott Pioli on this website. This isn't the Kansas City Star message board, we're supposed to be better smarter and more educated on the Chiefs than that. I'm not saying to blindly follow this team in whatever decisions they make, in fact it's good to question from time to time and reevaluate. However, it's only fair to evaluate when you have enough evidence to argue with alot of facts one way or the other.

Right now, neither side can argue about Matt Cassel intelligently, and the same for Coach Haley. Scott Pioli has to be given the benefit of the doubt. We have no clue how good or bad this draft class is going to be, and he did win those three Super Bowls in New England. I know many people give Belicheck alot of the credit and rightfully so, but Pioli was still a big part of it, and he won Executive of the Year three times. There is no way you can intelligently argue with me that Scott Pioli wasn't the best choice possible for Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Matt Cassel has only started 12 games for the Chiefs. He's started 27 games in his entire career. We need to give him our patience, pass protection for an entire season, and a recieving corps that doesn't drop the most passes in the NFL. If Chris Chambers doesn't drop that pass at the 3 yard line, the Chiefs probably win last week. Cassel has consistently shown toughness and played great in the clutch, which is something you can't teach.

I'm from New York and for years I listened to irate Giants fans call up radio stations and demand Eli Manning to be banished from the Meadowlands. He was no good they said, he didn't have enough fire, wasn't accurate enough, and didn't have a strong enough arm. Guess what? All that stopped when he got a really good offensive line and Plaxico Burress. I'm not saying you need to love Matt Cassel, or even like him right now, but you need to keep your head and give him a chance. Any argument to trade him is insane, he is not going anywhere whether you like it or not. He's the face of the franchise for better or worse. Also, please stop with calling for Brodie Croyle, he sucks. Flat out sucks. The guy is brittle as can be, has no accuracy, and never even won a game as a starter, with better talent around him than Cassel has. So please, enough already.

For Haley, he's a rookie head coach with no talent on this team minus maybe 6 or 7 starters and a few special teamers. He needs to let someone become the OC, and he has definitely made some mistakes in time management and turning down points by going for it on 4th down, but he has also shown alot of guts and positives. Haley is doing it his way, and he's been cleaning house, which by the way everyone was begging for. Everyone on here wanted this team to be dismantled, Herm to be fired, and Peterson to be canned. All that happened, and the team brought in a (hopefully) franchise QB, the best GM in the business (as voted by his peers), and a fiery Head Coach. Now that we aren't just magically 10-3, people are predictably losing faith, getting cold feet, and jumping ship. Stay the course. This team released or traded 31 players this offseason from last year's roster, and 4 are on a current team. FOUR! One of them is Tony Gonzalez, so that shows you how God awful this team was last season. They had no talent. This regime didn't try to patch holes, they stripped it down and built from the bottom of the roster up. Give it time, let this group grow and let them draft a f ew more times. Let this team add a few pieces via trade and free agency, and watch what happens, then let your questions and (potential) anger be heard.

I'm as angry as any of you over how bad this team has been for years, and you all have ever right to be frustrated, but give this group a chance. You can't logically jump ship and want to fire everyone again, otherwise this team will never get turned around. The Chiefs need consistency, and if it isn't working in a couple years, then it may be time to make a change. Don't forget, Parcells won three games his rookie year as a head coach too, and he had Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Joe Morris, and Harry Carson on that team. Sometimes it takes a while for a new coach and a team to come together and figure each other out. I'm not saying you have to like whats going on, but be patient, and give it a chance.

Glad You Had Time To Write All That

I agree wholehearted. I lived in the DC area for a while and watch Mr. Snyder change coaches and system every other year. It take time to install a system, and gether your players. I must almit I sometimes wonder about Haley’s playcalling, but as an announcer point out Sunday we are 3 -10 and have nothing to lose at this point. I expect improvement next year in all phases of the game. I think the foundation is there to build the Chiefs back to a team we can be proud of. The OL is starting to gel and if we can get 1 more year out of BW we have a chance to have an above average OL. The D needs work and I would not mind if we had a new DC next year. Let’s hang in there Chiefs Fans…

Rec'd

Literally rec’d it. I really think it’s necessary to understand that the Rome-wasn’t-built-in-a-day metaphor is an apt one in this case.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 16, 2009 1:06 PM CST reply actions

I look at it like this. Were at 3 wins, already an improvement over last year, i expected 4-5 wins and considered that a huge jump just as a lot of people i saw posting on here before the season, were still on track for that. That being said, if we all expected this team to win around 4 games why do we all still complain about our team looking like a 4-12 team?

by RamX21 on Dec 16, 2009 1:37 PM CST reply actions

That being said, I don’t think Matt Cassell is the right guy for the job. Just watching him play he doesn’t seem to have that IT factor. Deep balls don’t seem to have zip on them, sorta just loft up and usually fall a little short and it isn’t like our receivers are burners outrunning the throws. I don’t know, there’s too many problems around him to pin the blame all there we’ll just have to wait and see

Your predictions sucked. Mine were MUCH more cogent and well-considered.

Just ignore the signature, below.

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.

Rec'd... Good Subject matter, backed up with logic & realistic expectations.

I looked up the word “patience” it said the capacity to be patient. .. “patient”… bearing pain or trials without complaint… also… showing self control… calm, steadfast, persevering.
I thought patient meant that I did’nt like waiting or waiting some more.
I am going to have another rough year or two, why, why, why, did I have to be a Chiefs fan?.

by ChiefsChance on Dec 16, 2009 2:02 PM CST reply actions

agreed, im hoping this fan base can stay strong and not turn into the chargers, who have fans that would

cheer brees brees brees with his jersey, then call for his head and want rivers in the second hes drafted…

we need to stick with what we have, and be happy that we have it…

there are 22 starting positions on O and D…11/11 right now we have quality starters in about 6 of those 22 spots

Reality...like it or not this is it.

A lot of this goes back to PA’s post on Cement trucks and cranes, Those that are freaking out over this season came into it with unrealistic expectations. The Chiefs are closer to an expansion team than what most of us would ever hope for and calling for the GM, HC, all the coordinators, and even the QB’s head is all very premature. Ok We do need an Offensive and new Defensive Coordinator, but there just wasn’t enough time in the off season to get these things taken care of before we started. The Draft was done with people who were on the way out the door, there just wasn’t time to do all the things that we wanted Hell needed to get done. So Why is it that so many are so freaked out over whats happened so far, Hell I see improvement and a reason to believe it will continue.

Cassel, I’m not sure what was expected of a guy just starting for his second season, with a new offense, new receivers almost every week, and no line protection. I’m not saying he will be a pro bowler in the near future but I don’t think he has really had a fair shot at the job to say he’s a bust either. Once he has some tools to work with, some protection so he can see the field, and can know who he is throwing the ball to, then I think we can start judging him. I’m older so I remember that Len Dawson’s first season was a bit rough and he turned out alright, all I;m saying is give him and the rest of the Chiefs a real chance before you form the lynch mob.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

As a KC Chiefs fan for the last 35 years it has been better…..and worse. But 24 is exactly right, this will take some time. I like Pioli and Haley and think what they have done to this point has been good. I give Clark credit for getting the best available GM in the NFL. Haley has made some mistakes as a rookie head coach but what rookie does not make mistakes. If Cassel is not the QB of the future a change will be made. In a few years we will be a proud Chiefs nation once again.

Especially considering the rookie HC had about half the team halfway built.

I think that’s 1/4, btw.

Awesome post, rec'd.

You just blogged all the things I’ve been saying about the Chiefs for the past month. Seriously, I completely agree 100%. I would have posted something like this, but I’m too lazy to do any thing larger than a comment or fanpost.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

"Shut the f--- up."
-Matt Cassel

"WHAT THE F---?!?!"
-Todd Haley

I think...

Pioli was a good hire and Haley as well.Haley is obviously drawing up good plays because recievers are getting open, but Cassel just isnt the guy thats going to out duel Manning,Rivers or anyone else in the AFC to get us to the bowl so he’s just a waist of time and money. We need to find the next young star at QB if we ever want to get to the level of the other great teams and stop grabbing everyone elses retreads.

great teams take time

As a matter of historical record, great teams take time to develop. here are some of the greatest coaches and teams in the history of the NFL and how they started and progressed:

The SF 49ers under Walsh went from 2-14 to 2-14, 6-10 and then had 7 winning seasons over the next 8 years.

The Giants under Parcells went from 4-5 to 3-12, and then had 6 winning seasons over the next 7 years.

The Patriots under Belichick went from 8-8 to 5-11, then had 9 winning seasons in a row.

The Redskins under Gibbs (1.0) went from 6-10 to 8-8 (then a scab year) then had 9 winning seasons over the next 10 years (and 2 Super Bowl wins).

The Eagles under Ryan went from 7-9 to 5-10, 7-8, then had 3 winning seasons under Ryan and 2 more under Kotite.

The Cowboys under Landry had 5 losing seasons in a row and then finally had a 7-7 year. Then they had 19 winning seasons over the next 23 years (wow that’s impressive!).

I deliberately skipped the 1990s Cowboys because the Hershel Walker trade was a one time thing and it’s what made that team possible.

For those who claim that a team can be rebuilt in 1 year using the example of Parcells at the Dolphins, I ask where are they now? 7-7, which is mediocrity. They might end up being a dominant team but it didn’t happen in 1 year. Yes they went from 1-15 to 11-5 but the 2 years previous to the 1-15 year they were 6-10 and 9-7 which means they weren’t quite as bad as our Chiefs (close though).

As the man said, give Pioli & Haley time folks.

by aFan4Life on Dec 22, 2009 10:23 AM CST reply actions

Uh..

I agree with almost everything you said. Haley and Pioli do deserve more time. Im willing to give them 4 more years. That is how long it takes to build a superbowl team. HOWEVER, what annoyed me the most , and what i disagree with was your comparison of the two QB’s (out of 3) we have.

Cassel vs Croyle
I hope the Chiefs do release Croyle. He is better suited on a good team. You can call Croyle brittle, but lets get something straight. He took some bad hits. Cassel hasn’t taken those same hits that got croyle injured. The rules changed. I Didn’t see anyone tackling Cassels leg. That will put every QB out. Oh wait, Cassel did get tackled by his leg in pre season and was out for a bit. Is he brittle?

You say Croyle had a better supporting cast. You also stated that the same supporting cast isn’t on the team or even in the NFL any longer. I am confused.

You cannot compare accuracy. If you want, Cassel is 54% and Croyle is 57% for the CHIEFS. Almost the same amount of games played.

In order to win Superbowls, you need to have a better than good to great QB. Cassel is not. If he was all that and a bag of chips, he would have gotten the Pats to the playoffs last year……..with much better receivers/team. He would have also gotten us atleast 2-3 more wins

Against the Skins – D Fense won that game.
Against the Raiders (2) – Jamaal Charles and D Fense won that game.
Against the Steelers – Jamaal Charles and D Fense won that game.

The only thing I see is Cassel losing us games. He is a turd, and HE needs to go. But we already know that is not happening don’t we? Is that what your quick spliff about Cassel was? To give him time because we are stuck with his sorry @$$? To diss Croyle to boost Cassel’s value? I don’t get it.

And by the way, nothing else matters. We need a QB first and foremost. Great QB’s make coaches look like Einsteins.
