Kansas City Chiefs (Original pick: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU)
RE-DO PICK: PERCY HARVIN, WR-KR, FLORIDA
With six receiving touchdowns, two kick return touchdowns, and 13 plays from scrimmage of at least 20 yards, Harvin has been the league's most electrifying rookie play-maker. The Chiefs could sure have used a jolt of offense from their rookie class. They've scored 16 points or fewer in nine of 13 games this season, and their offense ranks 30th overall in yards (272.4), and 28th in points (15.8).

I will actually pass

and stay with TJ. The man is going to get it done in three years. (that could come back to bite)

I think he'll get it done as well

I don’t regret the pick… but Harvin would be nice to have, of course

Agreed

I was really hoping for Maclin, I didn’t know much about him until ESPN did a big story on his background, but seeing his highlights I knew he would electrify this offense (much like a Harvin). I hope we can sign one major need in FA so we can grab a receiver that is a speed demon like these guys with one of those second round picks……..

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 15, 2009 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

Maclin would have been a mistake

He’s just a poor man’s version of Harvin and needs a dominant QB/OL plus a clearly defined WR1 to pull coverage off him before his value really escalates much. Harvin is a one-man machine that would probably have excelled in just about any offense in the league and his value at KR/PR is universally lauded.

I’m still pretty happy with TJ and like the way he has developed in just his first season, give him a couple more years (as is customary for DLinemen) to learn and he should be a stud 34 DE. Harvin wouldn’t be putting up those numbers here because we don’t have as many weapons on offense as the Vikes. When Brett Favre is chillin in the pocket, throwing strikes to Rice and Berrian in between hand-offs to Adrian “I’m a one man offense” Peterson it gets real damn easy for Harvin to get open all over the field. DBowe, Chambers, Cassel, and Jamaal just aren’t at that level at this point (yet?).

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

Ummmm
He’s just a poor man’s version of Harvin and needs a dominant QB/OL plus a clearly defined WR1 to pull coverage off him before his value really escalates much.

Harvin has – Brett Favre, a good OL, clearly defined WR1 (Simeon Rice) to pull coverage off of him………..on top of that Harvin has it easier seeing as how the Vikings have Peterson as a ground threat that must be accounted for (opposing DB’s must cheat run = advantage Harvin)

Stats
Harvin – 48 rec, 681 yds, 6 TD
Maclin – 46 rec, 623 yds, 4 TD

I’ve seen plenty of film on both and I can assure you, Harvin has the slight edge based on the team. However, there is no way you can tell me Maclin would have been a mistake. Now if you are saying it would have been a mistake to pick a WR instead of TJ, then that would be the accurate statement based on the current make up of our roster…….

Oh yeah, the Jayhawks are lookin mighty good this year (Bball)

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 15, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

Furthermore,

for what we were trying to accomplish with the new D, Brian Orakpo looks like the draft do-over pick we should’ve gotten.

45 tkl, 11 sacks, 1 ff

We could have definitely used that type of destruction on defense to bolster the front 7 and make the DB’s look a lot better this year……

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 15, 2009 11:20 PM CST up reply actions

How about return stats too?

Isn’t Harvin a much better return guy?

by EyePod on Dec 16, 2009 7:51 AM CST up reply actions

Maclin has garbage returns, while Harvin looks like this:

34 KR, 986 Yards, 2 TD, long of 101 (average of 29 yards per return).

Oh, and Harvin has also rushed for over 100 yards with 8.7 ypc.

Maclin has -7 yards rushing.

Harvin is SUPERIOR to Maclin, and Maclin has injury issues to boot.

by EyePod on Dec 16, 2009 7:55 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks for the stats

but they are pointless if you read my original statement:

I was really hoping for Maclin

At the time of the draft I thought he would have been a good fit. Has Harvin turned out to have better numbers, absolutely. But you guys didn’t know he would at the time, because on draft day we are all speculating………

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 16, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

At the time of the draft yeah......

Crabtree had the whole injury deal with his foot, and I liked what I saw in Maclin. I still do think he would have been good for the Chiefs…..just bad timing as far as needs go.

Not really actually

though that would make sense. I just have never been convinced as to the reliability of Maclin’s hands. Also, I’m remembering something involving injuries with Maclin from researching draft prospects last year but I can’t back that up with evidence anymore without a little digging.

My point was simply that I think if given identical opportunities, Harvin would produce noticeably better than Maclin. Also, I think drafting ANY WR with our ’09 1st would have been a mistake given our needs.

Lastly, KU = National Championship. Our second team would be a top 25 team. Can you say depth?

Harvin wouldn't improve this team much...

Besides in the return game… I don’t think you can overstate how well Farve is at making the receivers around him better. In the years in between Freeman and Driver Favre had a bunch of junk to throw to and still had productive years… Hell DHB is the new Sydney Rice.

I got off on a tangent...

Sydney Rice was the original DHB. He was an athletic receiver who couldn’t catch footballs, but now he is a superstar with Favre throwing to him… Its just that yes Harvin is good, some of that is because Favre is throwing to him.

How about DO OVER for 2008

Instead of 4th RD taking WILL FRANKLIN (WR), it should have been

PIERRE GARCON (WR) which was selected in the 6th RD by Indy.

Predictions as of 06.24.2009.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

We need Flowers much more than we need Jackson. It doesn’t seem that way with how the defense is playing, but he’s our best defensive player and will be for a long time. I like Jackson, but not over Flowers.

no way to tell if Harvin would have done half as much here

with our circus of an early roster, Haley being the coach/qb coach/oc/czar/janitor, its just to hard to tell. Good idea though, i just think TJ will excel when and if we get a legit d-line coach and a new defense coordinator.
Ohh what could have been though to see someone with hands and speed and also freeing up Bowe, taking the occasional KO or punt to the house!

Just for some semblance of semi-redemption

This was my assessment of Harvin in the AP Mock Draft as picking for the Jaguars:

This [Juaguars team] needs an immediate infusion of not only talent, but impact, fear-inducing, talent at the position. It isn’t going to come from what is available on the free agent market, and it isn’t going to come from the later rounds of the draft. To this point, Crabtree and Maclin are gone. Heyward-Bey is a height-weight-speed guy who really never performed up to his athletic ability at Maryland. Yes, this is a reach, but the run on WR’s in this mock is on, and the Jags are desperate.

Curry, Raji, Jason Smith, Andre Smith, Monroe, Crabtree, and Maclin are gone. Stafford isn’t an option this year, coaching jobs are on the line.

Harvin is a game breaker. He can take it all the way as a RB, WR, and kick returner. He has question marks concerning his strength and transition to the NFL game. Regardless of any of the legitimate concerns about him, he is versatile, dangerous, and the Jags best option to instantly provide a real threat at the WR position left at the #8 pick. He doesn’t have to be the #1 guy immediately, he can line up in the slot or any other position designed to get him the ball quickly, allowing him to use his instincts and proven athleticism to change the game.

In the first seven picks of this mock, three LT’s have been chosen. The only other real LT option at #8 is Michael Oher. It is too early for him to go at #8, and he would sit behind newly acquired LT Tra Thomas. HC Jack Del Rio has lost control over personnel and is on the hot seat. He has to spark the offense. The offensive line is stable enough to be serviceable, but QB David Garrard has absolutely no one to pass the ball. The Jags have to take their shot at an offensive game changer now…and so does Del Rio.

I think we are beginning to cloud the issue.

In the SI version of this Mock Redraft, Tyson Jackson isn’t even taken in the 1st round.

For the record, I was always against taking Tyson Jackson at #3. I would not take Harvin at #3 for the Chiefs either.

After reading Banks’ rationale for his redraft, I think most of it is rather terrible…even with the benefit of hindsight. He contradicts himself repeatedly throughout.

So, to answer your question, neither.

If a gun was to my head and Jackson or Harvin were the only 2 options and every other draft eligible player was killed in a volcano climbing accident, then Harvin.

MN was getting blasted by a lot of folks for taking him. I remeber reports coming out that Florida was relieved to get rid of him. He’s playing nice so far, but we’ll see how it goes down the line…

True

I heard Brad Childress went down to Gainesville (sp?) to meet with Urban Meyer who was very forthcoming about Harvin’s shortcomings but he decided based on his value that low in the 1st round, it was worth the risk. Certainly there is less risk drafting a potential headcase in the mid 20’s than at 3 because of guaranteed salaries.

Come to think of it, I’m not sure we were drafting BPA either. I honestly don’t know what the hell we were doing, but I’m gonna have to believe in Pioli’s having more experience then I do and keep the faith…..

Here’s a problem I have with your comment what pos isn’t of need on this team? Corner maybe our best overall pos and we could use a nickel who isn’t going to completely gamble then leave us high and dry, or get beat consistently. I’m not so sure that tj was really the bpa but he clearly was the bpa in pioli’s/haley or someone in the chiefs orgs mind..

Also to the people saying our line would be the same let’s remember what we had going into the draft…. Oh ya a 4-3 2nd year dt who half the fans weren’t happy with who we moved to de without fully knowing he would be okay, and another dt who we turned into a nt then traded away, edwards who has done okay for a bad team but below average nt gillbery not sure if he was on ps or something but no one said pre draft oh we got him our dline may not be so bad.. Then tj and alex m added in from the draft. Now what if dorsey busts, we don’t draft tj even if we grab alex in the 3rd you all would have piolis head for not working on the dline at all as well.

Overall I think Scott did an okay job considering how bad this team was he’s still got a ton of work to do and I think and hope we got the right guy.
