A United Direction?

As fans who have lived through red fridays and pep rallies, it is difficult to accept the somewhat unfriendly face of Scott Pioli and Coach Haley.  Carl for all his flaws did create a great atmosphere in this city.  The players were speaking all over town and doing charity events. The current regime just does not seem to unite the city or give the "damn the torpedoes" type of rallying cry that I think we want.  We want to feel like we are in partnership with the team and it just does not seem the case now.  We can accept all of that though if/when we are winning.

The thing that worries me about Pioli is that it does not seem like the front office/coaching staff are on the same page. Jay Glazer of Fox reported that Pioli and Haley barely speak to one another. That is not a good sign.  More than ever we need the GM and the coach to be on good terms.  We need set systems on both sides of the ball that we can draft into for years to come.  As it stands now, many agree that we need new coordinators on both sides of the ball.  Carthon is a Haley guy; is he a Pioli guy?  I am very concerned that free agents will not want to play for Haley.  As Tony Gonzalez said: "this isnt kindergarten".  We need a united front office and a consensus direction moving forward on systems for this to work.  We switched the offensive needs from Vermeill (smaller, faster, pulling lineman) to Herm and now the defense from the Cover 2 to the 3-4. We need consensus in order to build a team.  Lets hope the Pioli/Haley rumors are untrue.  If they are true, then bite the bullet and bring in Cowher.

Are Pioli and Haley united in vision, harmonious on player acquisition and development; are they friends?  What do you think AP?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

It shouldn't matter if they are friends.

Pioli is the boss, and they should be working together for a common goal. If Haley is to blame then Pioli has to take some of the blame as well for not communicating with his subordinates if that is the issue.

Everyone wants to put their two cents in

on how the coach and GM are doing because the team is bad. I believe though that when listening to these two gentlemen, that they are both pretty genuine and they say that they are both fully for building a team that will be good for years to come.

I think that in itself is enough to say that they are both on the same page. Haley has said that he is all for getting more players in here because it allows there to be constant evaluations happening. Haley though has said it himself he wants and needs to be focusing more on being the HC and not fulfilling so many titles, the problem is, there just isnt anyone obviously on the staff that he trusts enough to take the reins of OC.

Next year when these 2 get a full offseason to work with and can bring in maybe some coordinators that they can interview together and trust with their personel, then we can really judge how the Pioli/Haley expirment is going

It's pretty disheartening to hear that Pioli and Haley don't get along.

I usually trust what Jay Glazer says too. He rarely spews bullshit.

If that’s really the case, Haley will be gone at the end of the season and I am sure that Pioli already has his replacement ready to go. i doubt that Pioli would keep Haley around if they can’t stand each other. The HC and GM have to work together. That’s pretty hard to do when you don’t talk.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Dec 15, 2009 11:11 AM CST reply actions

I agree that Glazer is usually pretty good

however, there hasn’t been any follow ups or reports from other sources that back this up. If we start hearing it from multiple sources then I’ll give it more credibility.

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

It's an interesting thing to consider

On the other hand, I believe that Haley’s on record as saying that Pioli is very good at trying to get him the players he needs.

You have to remember too that the Chiefs seem to be running schemes that their coaches and front office are familiar with, and getting guys that fit in with that scheme. It’s different from what was here, but it’s what the guys are familiar with. Pioli seems like he’s comfortable with whatever system, but he knows what players fit in with a shotgun-spread offense (which Haley should know how to run) and the 3-4 defense (with which Haley and Pendergast are familiar).

I feel like the Chiefs do have a plan in place and are building toward the future; the issue that a lot of people seem to have is that there’s not a ton of instant gratification in the process.

He didn't say they don't get along

he said they don’t talk much to each other. Who cares? It’s Haley’s team to coach, Pioli’s job to find players to help Haley. Aside from that, there’s not much they can do in terms of roster adjustments now that the trade deadline has passed and the season is coming to a close… I don’t think they really need to be talking to each other right now. Pioli and his scouts need to be seeing who out there in the college ranks might become future Chiefs, and Haley has to focus on getting his team wins on Sunday.

So right now, their jobs aren’t conducive to a whole lot of talking to each other. Another ESPN fluff piece … aka: Non-story

If you only knew...

I don't want a Cheer Leader GM

I want the guy that right now is too busy with the scouting department working on the draft. I want the guy out there looking for talent to bring to this team. Maybe you are used to Peterson out in the public eye always looking to take a bow for what the team accomplished, personally I don’t care, The Job is to get the best possible players to become Chiefs.

Right now at this time of year Haley and Pioli each have very different jobs, Haley is to work on this week and the next team, where as Pioli’s job is to work on the team for the next season, with the draft and FA market coming and to top it off the first uncapped season in a few years. If you want a Cheer Leader and someone kissing the medias ass so they look good even when the team is not then you need Peterson, I myself I want someone working to do thier job and not playing the media darling.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

Still should be on the same page

I am not saying I want to go back to Carl by any means. It was so annoying how he would drive players out of town aka Jared Allen by negotiating through the media. I do think they should have a public face (Trent Green?) and do their best to get some of the players out in the public. The city needs to reconnect with the team. It is important for winning to get the community behind the team and to fill up Arrowhead. We are losing our fan base.

On the player development side, I think Pioli is working his tail off. He misjudged how bad our offensive line was when he came into town and hopefully will correct that team killer. I do think it is important for Haley and Pioli to be talking now as they each should be on the same page as to who is developing (dorsey, o’callaghan) and who is not (the Wrs, TE’s and safeties). I have great concerns that it will be difficult to attract FA’s with Haleys attitude. I agree players are paid good money but all things close to equal, players will go to winners or teams with coaches they like and right now we have neither- Cardinals scrubs aside.

I realize it will take a while but when a team or army is losing, you need EVERYONE on the same page. I dont see that now with our front office and the coaches, the organization and the fans and even the players and coaching staff.

with most of these players on this team

they probably dont want to parade them in front of the media. To be honest Vrabel and Cassel are the only real “winners” on this team. Vrabel to me has gotten alot of media attention and is usually the one who does speak to the media after games.
Dorsey usually says “i see progress” and thats because he has lost most of his NFL games. Once they establish a winner here and the franchise from top to bottom is winners then we should see more of them and gladly so.

Hold up though fletch...in all fairness to Haley

Belichek recently got the same crap thrown at him by every NFL channel on earth and some on other planets for sending Randy and 4 others home. One of his players actually said and I quote (in my own words) “motivation is for kindergardners”.

Sounds like Tony G. a little huh? And Belichek is probably the single greatest coach of all time (ARGUABLY)!! So don’t argue with me!! lol

I wish someone could just confirm or deny that shit for us about Pioli and Haley. The not knowing is what sucks.

by krayfish on Dec 15, 2009 12:46 PM CST reply actions

Secondly, I don't care about the charities and all speaking all over town.

I do some volunteer work myself. I would never say what because charity is NOT supposed to be something you do because your team wants you to.

I don’t care about any of that. The players should do that on their own if they choose. Now if the coach comes in and asks the players do they want to participate in a local charity or good cause and the team says yes, then great.

I care about winning!! All that charity did not a superbowl win. Win the superbowl and then do charity. Just win the f*n superbowl please. I don’t care if H&P hate each other. I don’t care if H&P are sleeping together. I don’t care if their really women. I don’t care if their not just customers, their also the president of the “just for men’s” hair club.

I care about winning! football is a sport and sports are played to win. Anyone with me on this?

by krayfish on Dec 15, 2009 12:50 PM CST reply actions

I'll give you half credit Kray.

You can not guilt someone into a charity work. Do it because you want to, and it makes you feel good. Like you say let them know what is available and they can decide on their own.

no refunds allowed! LOL

I am with you on this! It has been a long time since we have felt the pride and excitement that comes with a winning team, a winning season. Remember how you felt in 2003-2005 when you knew the Chiefs had a chance in every game they played? Remember when the defense was so dominant under Marty that we just knew we were going to win every week? I know that didn’t translate well into the post season, but just the idea that your team is strong, and that they could win every game they play, is an awesome feeling! One that we haven’t had for years now! I want that feeling back!

300 million to rehab Arrowhead

it is not just the charity work. Believe me, #1 priority is to field a winner. I just dont see the organization in pynch right now front the front offcie to the staff toi the players on down. I do think it is important for the team to give back though. We just gave them 300 million dollars to rehab Arrowhead. It is important to build some public faces for the team- to give us a reason to cheer. I know Pioli is all business but part of business is giving hope and reason to your staff and customers. They are not doing that now.

by T.Fletch on Dec 15, 2009 3:08 PM CST reply actions

I don't feel like digging it up, but if I remember right

back when we cut 2.7, I read some quotes from Haley that mentioned that Clark Hunt needed to come back to KC after an away game for something so it worked out that he was able to ride along on the team plane and talk about LJ with he and Pioli. I remember thinking that the way he said it sounded like he and Pioli normally talk about things on the flight home and Hunt was able to sit in with them. I could be remembering this wrong or just reading things into it that aren’t there, but it sounded to me like they were working together at that time. If nothing else, they still sound like they are both reading from the same script when they talk about the future of the team.

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

by KCporkchop on Dec 15, 2009 5:14 PM CST reply actions

I think this regieme is united but too exclusive.

They have made Haley the face of the organization and they seem to want him to avoid at all cost, making any statements that might be interpreted or mis-interpreted by the media, so he says absolutely nothing but scripted comments. Players comments also seem scripted.

The days are gone when Vermiel would invite players over to his house to sample from his wine cellar. Herm’s pressers were pretty loose as players would show up… LJ did his Herm Edwards impersonation. Brodie Croyle was heckled by Jerad Allan. Fans felt like they were somehow a part of what was going on.

Maybe Clark Hunt needs to quit wearing a suit and tie all the time and loosen up. It wouldn’t hurt for him to come down to the field once and awhile and mingle with the players. They’re way too serious. It’s only football.

by choirboy on Dec 15, 2009 7:18 PM CST reply actions

I think you're on to something with this

These guys are so serious ther’re rigid. They’re trying so hard to build a winner they forgot chemistry. They can loosen up without divulging trade secrets. I sure hope they do.
