Things I noticed vs. Buffalo (in the 2nd half anyway, which I watched)
*charles is a huge bright spot and gives us a chance to win.
*lance long is NOT a return man and took 2 consecutive big time hits on returns.
*When we had momentum, there were a few very bad calls offensively that caused a loss of momentum/minus plays
*defense? cant figure it out. at times we do the job when we need to. at other times we let the bills.....the BILLS, move the ball at will....
* we obviously, sorely miss dwayne bowe
*cassel continued to struggle
*cassel made some poor descisions/tried to force some throws- namely the pick he threw deep in our own territory
*receivers cant get open or drop the ball
*bobby wade has 2 first names
*bobby wade cant field a punt and on one first down reception, he acted like he was shocked that the ball hit him right in the belly, and he actually held on to it, causing him to pause,,,,and almost drop it
*tamba was an emphasis in their blocking scheme but he still provided pressure, and one sack that i witnessed? maybe more for the entire game?
* their o-line seemed to move our d-line backwards?
*flowers continues to...blossom.

when they picked off cassel
we DID strip it and he clearly wasnt down yet and the ball was gone. I guess there was no conclusive evidence, but who was johhny on the spot? that bright spot again…..JC.
But yes, i thought we got screwed on that one.

But Cassel is the reason we lose these games. We had at least 5 chances to score and win. I was defending him, but now he is regressing and he wasnt that good before the regression.

I would disagree
Cassel put some balls right where the needed to be.
One of the picks was deflected good play by the LB.
Cassel might not have been perfect but we should have won the game on that Chambers drop.

he needs to work on his touch
and get those balls over the LBs heads…….Chambers drop was the final nail, though
Touch would be nice
Bowe is back against Cleveland I think.
Lets see if Bowe and Cottam and Pope will give us some YAC

It's because he doesn't release the ball at its highest point
Instead he sort of pushes it out at the end of his throwing motion, causing the ball to come off his hand flatter than it should.

IF we had a good playcall on the goalline
instead of a sack…then chambers drop would be just another drop for us and not the nail in the coffin.

Haley needs to purchase a ton of it and put it on the hands of the receivers. I couldn’t watch the game but got to listen to the end of the third and all of the 4th. They kept talking about how Cassel was actually thowing pretty good and that the WR just couldn’t catch it…even when it hit em in the bread basket.
Things of importance to me:
1)God
2)Family
3)Chiefs
4)Marine Corps
I only saw 1 drop (Chambers)
There is no doubt in my mind that this one is on Cassel. He missed Bradley on 2 TD’s and a 3rd he was open, but underthrew him terribly that was picked.
Drops were not a problem in this game.

with who to spell Charles?
Castille? Williams? Castile had like 1 good carry, I don ’t think they quite know how to utilize him
I just think that we shoulda rushed more on the 2nd to last drive.
We had plenty of time. We needed to run that down so we could get the TD and with the way the D played against the pass, we woulda done well.
also…we shoulda focused more on getting outta bounds on the last drive…but oh well.
Losing doesnt hurt as much as it used to. I guess after we were breakin records in the Vermeil era, it hurt, but since we breakin records of futility now, its a litte expected.

is it me or does it seem like the vermeil shifts r back in fashion for the chiefs?
at least from the highlights i get to see, seems like they r using a lot of shifts at the line like our old chiefs used to.

Appears that the purpose is to give Cassel a better pre-snap read.
And they’re executing those shifts fairly cleanly, with only one penalty on Albert for lining up too far off the ball.
Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.
not nearly so much this game
they’re still killing us, but Cassel continues to make bad decision after bad decision, forced throws, indecisiveness……I think the season has gotten to him & he has lost every bit of confidence he’s ever had
yea, overall
i thought cassel did ok, but when he was under pressure, or couldnt find a receiver he tried to force it a few times. 2 of those ended up being picks, one that flowers bailed us out on, and i believe the other resulted in 3 for buffalo.

He's been criticized for not being more aggressive.
This is what you get when he’s more aggressive: more dropped balls and more picks. To be expected. On margin, he played well enough to win, and wasn’t THE reason the Chiefs lost. Not a good time to be throwing the QB under the bus. I remember Kurt Warner being clean out-competed for the starting job in St. Louis, when the team around him was crumbling. Bulger DID play a little better in a bad situation, and Warner went to within 1 win of a championship on another team.
I don’t think you evaluate the QB too harshly in this situation. Upgrade over Thigpen accomplished. At least one year premature, but I wouldn’t add to the problem by searching for another QB too aggressively, until the supporting cast is upgraded. I think you roll with Cassel until and unless he becomes the reason you don’t win a playoff game, but he’s plenty good to caretake a good squad to the playoffs. He may not be enough to WIN in the playoffs, but I think it’s VERY clear that this isn’t a playoff-caliber roster.

The only thing worse than keeping him is parting ways with him and getting ANOTHER false read
on the NEXT QB you bring in. Keep swapping-out QBs at great expense, and just keep setting back your team-building project.

thats right.
he was successful with talent around him in NE, so why shouldnt he be if we can get more talent around him in KC. O-line, WR, and probably a TE…then theres the other variables: a good defense usually equals a more productive offense.

Upgrade NT decisively. Keep churning the roster at ILB with journeymen.
More speed at LB is always nice, but more dominant line play and perimeter play (I’m a broken record), and you have instant upgrade at ILB. Then turn the microscope on the LB corps, and look to get aggressive, there, if you fail to find what you need by working a pretty deep pool of talent with a fairly wide net.

Buffalo threw 3 passes to WR for 40 yards and a disputable TD
Leggett will be back. The TE and RB passes are killing us as well as the missed tackles that turn into 40+ yard runs. Those are all ILB jobs.

How much better would the LBs look if...
- the RB and TE were more worried about protections than getting open?
- the open RB/TE is behind a mass of tall men with outstretched arms in the QB’s face?
Mayes failed to wrap up at least one glaring time, that I saw. He also came over the top and knocked away the floater that was all Fitzpatrick had, because solid pressure denied the clear passing lane.
At this point, fixing ILB is treating symptom more than cause. To my eye, they’re further along in staffing the LB position than they are other positions. Does the current situation expose the ILBs as a/the weak link in coverage? Probably. But the NEED for LB help in coverage is far greater than it should be, because of more fundamental shortcomings in the other 2 position groups. Would ILB upgrade help? Almost certainly. But it’s not the first thing you look to do to building a competitive defense. You’re basically wanting to squander a high pick on a position that can and will be upgraded with much more modest moves at the position, itself, and aggressive moves elsewhere.

Record the game at home, but watching live, you're not hostage to network camera angles and extraneous BS that
gets in the way of seeing what’s important during and between plays. Once you have the roster memorized, you can see virtually all the personnel substitutions and know where people are lined up. Big as Jackson is, for instance, from the sideline with a telephoto, you can’t see if he’s in 3-tech or 5-tech ’most all day.

Forget to mention
cassel didnt seem to have much time. nobody to throw to, or no protection? No matter the reason…we definitely need O-line help. progress has been made but we cant be consistent unless we can control the line of scrimmage. this will help cassel, for sure, and can you imagine charles with a great o-line? yikes…

Can't punch it in from short range. Definite sign of O-Line inferiority.
When you can get some movement on the short field, THEN your O-Line is good enough. Actually, moving it well between the 20s with this o-line is indicative of superior play-calling. (ducks).

so all that offense and wow, 10 points … brutal
4 sacks also brutal
4 INTs beyond brutal

Cassel did well enough to win today. The Int at end who cares. Cottam was the target and got plowed by the DB. The int in total cost us 3 points. You want Cassel to win games you got to let him throw the ball.

I'm more of a "Take the points" guy, myself.
You come away with something positive, at least, and that’s what this team needs, imo. Going for it on 4th and short is one of three things:
- Faith in your O-Line/offense.
- Lack of faith in your defense.
- Total desperation.
Or a combo of the three. All too often, you see teams go for it on 4th-and-short and come away with NOTHING. That’s more demoralizing than just about anything else you can do to your team, and it pumps up the opponent.
I’m generally a fan of going for it, but not with a team that’s this inconsistent.

great points
now i understand the reasoning behind your profile image!
Just like novocaine. give it time; always works..
The greater the fall, the grander the ascention..
Yeah, the inconsistency of the Chiefs would give me pause before going for it on 4th down.
With a good team, I feel like it’s just playing the percentages (if the average play picks up 5 yards, than it makes sense to go on 4th and 1), but more than that it’s showing faith in your offense that they can do it, and it’s showing faith in your defense’s ability to stop the other team if the offense fails.
On fourth and one I think I’d call for a qb sneak. Cassel’s shown some ability to convert those in his career with a strong push and his height. Once managed a 6-yard gain on a sneak up the middle.
As a mathematician, I'm dubious of averages informing decisions in the now.
Your eye has to tell you if you’re capable of getting push up front when you need it and the defense is anticipating it. That was probably the biggest hole in Belichick’s reasoning in the Colts game. He knew he didn’t have the horses to get it on the ground, which left the dink pass to Welker, which was well-defended.

Yup...
Except that was the maddening thing. The play was a pass from the beginning without even a hint of the run. They motioned Kevin Faulk out of the backfield and then threw it to him- Brady didn’t target Welker or Moss on the play. I’m not sure the play wasn’t designed to go to Faulk the entire time.
It probably would have worked against Tony Dungy’s defense, too. The Colts are a much more aggressive team this year.
For some reason, I'm still thinking Welker on that one.
But we’re definitely talking about the same play. And you’re right, they showed pass all the way. Basically the move of a team that’s compensating for a short dick.
Colts got big in the middle of their d-line and reportedly made numerous dark-horse LB picks for speed.
I’m still a bigger fan of being super-stout up front (including bigger LBs) and getting really deep in the secondary, so if speed becomes the issue, you have the stout up front to count on and can run a nickel that still puts plenty of muscle and mass on the field, without sacrificing power at the point. Generally, I feel like you make your ILBs look quicker by giving them more clearcut situations that still confound offenses, because you can dictate more and decide more things pre-snap (or off of simpler keys after the snap). A speedy LB can do more things at once, and still make up for changing his mind late in the play, but I want to see the LB able to play more decisively more often.
What I definitely do NOT want to see is making speedy LB acquisitions before the team’s done gettin’ stout up front.
