Chiefs Struggle Against the Bills; Lose 16-10

This loss really hurts. Maybe it's because the Chiefs had a chance, deep in Buffalo territory, at the end of the game to win it.

But no.

Cassel's pass was tipped and picked off by the Bills with 2:13 left in the game. Chris Chambers had dropped a big pass near the goal line on the previous play.

Dropped passes. Sound familiar?

The Chiefs even got the ball back but a deep Hail Mary pass with no time left was caught by Buffalo.

Here are some notes on the game. Tweet your questions to Joel at @ArrowheadPride.

We need to keep our chins up for one more week in order to sell out the Browns game and preserve the NFL's longest sell out streak for another year.

The Good

  • The Chiefs defense came up big with twelve minutes left in the game. They shut down the Bills after Buffalo took over with great field position. Rian Lindell missed a 51-yard kick.
  • RB Jamaal Charles nearly does it all. After a tipped pass resulted in a Buffalo INT, Charles chased down the Bills linebacker and nearly stripped the ball back.
  • LB Tamba Hali applied pressure all day on QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Hali had one sack, his 7.5 of the year.
  • On 3rd and 16, with 7 minutes left, Cassel hit Wade for a 22-yard first down. It was the offensive play of the game. Leonard Pope's 16-yard catch and run on 3rd and 8 was also big.
  • TE Leonard Pope had a huge game - 4 catches for 45 yards - with a couple of big catches near the end of the game.

The Bad

  • A Rudy Niswanger holding penalty in the fourth quarter negated a big pass play by Cassel to Chambers.
  • WR Chris Chambers was called for holding on that huge Jamaal Charles run late in the fourth quarter. This was a killer penalty.
  • DT Glenn Dorsey left the game before the half with a knee injury. He did not return.
  • WR Mark Bradley signaling first down when he was ten yards short.
  • The Chiefs had five penalties in this game, some coming at very critical junctures.

The Ugly

  • The Chiefs forced three turnovers and scored zero points off of them.
  • WR Chris Chambers dropped a huge pass near the goal line with under three minutes left. Another drop.
  • Cassel was 26/43 for 224 yards and four INTs. He had 145 yards passing the first half. His QB rating was 35.4.

At least he attacked the comment and not the individual.

But yeah, not very tactful.

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.

What the hell happened to the defense?

Seems like teams can run anytime they want and all day long. I’m not saying the defense was good at some point. But, I don’t remember getting blown up in the running game like we have the last 3 or 4 weeks?

by vincent2668 on Dec 13, 2009 3:13 PM CST reply actions

I will say this

Tamba Hali looks like a damn good OLB. Who knew the position change was going to work this well for him.

Charles is a man-child. If he spends the off-season carrying around 45lbs. plates to strengthen his grip on the ball, he’ll be hell on wheels next year. Fumbles kill but the guy can flat out play.

If Pioli brought in a guy that he has worked with and knows better than any rookie QB

and thought he could lead the team? Do you believe that he could evaluate the talent of a young QB in the draft?

by vincent2668 on Dec 13, 2009 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

Really why bother sticking around if all you guys do is bash the team? If you that sick of it be gone really… All the problems are far from problems caused by Pioli now can I question taking Cassel sure… But how about all the drops? Lack of consistent protection, defense has been spotty coaching all got together late

by karkz86 on Dec 13, 2009 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

And if you cant handle people bitching about the team during a poor season

you can go somewhere else as well. Drops, poor takling, poor coaching, poor ints, are all a product of either bad talent, bad coaching, or bad players around the QB. All of those things point to the GM.
I’ve been the biggest Cassel supporter there is. But, I’m finding it hard to do any longer. Yes there are drops…but there are also a lot of missed passes and flat out bone headed decisions he is making in the pocket.

by vincent2668 on Dec 13, 2009 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

the GM also came in late

he didn’t get a full offseason to evaluate current players, college players or FA’s. and by the time he got here most decent FA’s were already signed. they made changes and brought in players throughout the season, gotta give em credit for that. plus, i’m not really sure what people were expecting this year, with all the shake-ups, we were bad last year and we’re bad this year; it should have been expected. see what he does next year then bitch.

by E.C. on Dec 13, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't think they were in good position to attract the top FAs, either, all else being equal.

The good players already on-board were interested in jumping ship. No question, Pioli will have to make some hits in the draft and show something on the field with them, before many FAs will be interested or see any possibility of putting them over the top.

by hmills110 on Dec 13, 2009 3:38 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

The point is...

Pioli did bring in Cassel and determined that he was going to be the franchise QB. Many people have determined that even with tools around him, he is not going to be the QB to lead this team to a superbowl.
If those people are correct, that falls on Pioli.

by vincent2668 on Dec 13, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

mostly i've heard that he's good with players around him

and he showed it last year. plus the dude took a shot on a QB, it happens, it doesn’t always work out, at least he knew him up close which usually isn’t the case, so i have to think that he knows more about him than most, including us.

by Soria's Unibrow on Dec 13, 2009 3:14 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I'm kinda glad that happened, in a way, because he doesn't show great technique for a veteran.

He’s pretty consistent if he’s open and the ball’s in his breadbasket. But you see he’s more of a basket catcher than a snatch the ball out of the air at its highest/earliest point receiver. This narrows the effective window.

A good route runner, he DOES create separation better than ’most anyone else on the roster, but… Worth keeping? Yes. Worth paying #1 or #2 money to? Very questionable. Offer him the #3 or #4 money he actually rates, and then maybe he walks or sticks with a poor attitude, because he did and can make some big plays.

All Croyle had to do was sidestep and it's an easy completion.

That’s simple 1-on-1 stuff with the defender off his feet and the QB with lots of space around him, otherwise. Long as we’re reamin’ Cassel, that was something pretty basic that anybody with an ounce of street ball in him executes much better than that.

the guy is getting paid 63 million dollars to throw the ball. You would think he would be good enough to hit an open receiver down the field at least 1/3 chances. Stop defending the guy. He stinks just as much as most of the other players we have. Problem is, he is the one with the ball in his hands every offensive play and the one who gets paid to make good decisions.

With that trick shoulder of his, he oughtn't be throwing it much or at all, unless he's a southpaw.

I'm afraid that's pretty much the case.

The Chiefs need to patch the O-Line (maybe not as many big moves necessary as some think), land a solid NT, and spend the rest of their coin on perimeter players on O and D. I think the lack of real competition in training camp gave them a false read on the talent they had, and a key to developing unknown players is matching them up with good players on the opposite side of the ball.

Senior NCAA QB list

Todd Reesing, KU (go to Canada, Todd, it’s the only way you can stop the Big 8 QB jinx)
Levi Brown, Troy
Tyler Sheehan, Bowling Green
Max Hall, BYU
Thaddeus Lewis, Duke (has to be tough to make it through life with the name Thaddeus)
Tim Hiller, Western Michigan

those are the Seniors with more yards per game than Colt McCoy

Freddie Barnes (Bowling Green) has 11.5 receptions per game, which is kind of crazy

by Da Chiefs Guy on Dec 13, 2009 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Nothing wrong with his fundamentals catching the ball. But yes,

a team that needs a monster with the ball after the catch, and can afford an occasional drop.

Oh, never mind. Bowe could be a very solid part of a very good team, but I’m not sure he’s going to be worth the money he gets, considering the lack of a dominant player on the other side.

Chiefs could get it done with quick, pesky receivers who caught everything in reach, as a complement to Bowe. Might be surprised at how good Bradley, Wade and Long start looking in that regard, with just a little bit better offensive line.

They moved the ball very well, at times, against this Buffalo squad. I think the loss is heartbreaking to others (moreso than to me, surprisingly), because they looked close to turning the corner.

Most of this game, I didn’t see Cassel as the limiting factor. That was a pretty weak pass on the run, though, when his feet bought him an opportunity to reverse field and complete a pass over the top to a receiver (I think it was Charles, although the broadcaster called someone else’s number) who had a clear step on his guy. And great WRs make that pass look better than it was, able to come back as well or better than the DB and contest for the floater at its highest point.

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. I say we put the pressure short-term on the talent acquisition crew.

It’s so easy to misjudge the playcaller, when the execution is at such a low level. Near-term, I’d be giving my position coaches a VERY hard look. T-Jax looks like a real beast, but he’s running himself out of position too often – nothing anybody’s doing to stop him, just his own eyes and eagerness leading him astray.

Hard to judge at this point, though. It’s a bit disingenuous to bemoan the across-the-board lack of talent and then castigate the coordinators.

But that assumes the GM and Coach are going to be willing to adjust their chosen scheme. I don’t see it happening and here’s why; On Offense, they’ve gone to a zone blocking scheme because once implemented should be much easier to acquire players for. On Defense, they’ve moved towards a 3-4 because well… once implemented it should be much easier to acquire players for. You have to remember that they’re doing things for the long-term and quick fixes aren’t really a part of their plans.

Suh will be a fine player he isnt a 3-4 NT….End of story

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

Chiefs 3-13

I don’t know anymore. from gmdm to pioli, ttp? I can’t we were set up for success and we capitalize by losing? is this how it feels to be lions/browns/stl fan? expect the loss? I refuse. baltimore, jax, etc. the play calling is better but I’d honestly rather watch MLB network and the winter meetings than this crack team take the fid for one more Sunday. “inside the pads!” do not hold. Goddammit niswanger/chambers! I’d rather watch the mo mavs than this sorry excuse count me a jax fan from here on out. at least they have a direction and identity. Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!! Just so upset/frustrated. Just 5 wins and you can’t even do that. Fuck kc sports and especially the chiefs bat least the royals let me know they’re bad but you hide it!

I didn’t mind the Cassel trade considering what we gave up and Vrabel was thrown in but to throw the dude money before he proved anything and now watch him single handedly lose games it has made me realize the chiefs are no where near to being a respectable team, He is a horrible excuss for a starting qb, atleast when thiggy, or brokie was back there, not much was expected because we hadn’t invested a wholelot in them. Now I find my self having to defend the chiefs everyday on there moves and play in general, Thank you Matt Cassel and see horrible wr’s atleast now we may have a shot at Eric Berry.

by SKyNYrDCHiEF44 on Dec 13, 2009 3:47 PM CST via mobile reply actions

You don't need to defend them to be a fan. Just the fact that you know as much as you can tells EVERYone you're a hard-core fan (with class)

I’m a younger fan, so the 3-4 is ‘exotic.’ i liked the switch but WE are a 4-3 team. No depth behind Edwards. WTF?’ cut Wade Wade, belcher, mike brown. We are built as a 4-3 and ‘push’ blocking. Square peg in a round hole? Don’t force bit adapt? That’s why a goof coach does. I’d strength and cchamge gameplans

Disgustingly Bad Blame Scott Poili

Clark Hunt does not know anything on how to run a business and Scott Pioli left Todd Haley out to dry his year. Poili bought a QB only because he was from NE but forget to buy the meat (OL) and potatoes (WR) that are needed to have success. Blame Scott Pioli for the mess this year. Why is everyone giving him a free pass of a shitty job so far!!.

by NFL season ticket holder on Dec 13, 2009 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Na, blame CP this year

if it’s near this bad next year, blame Pioli.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

by jmcgoblue on Dec 13, 2009 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

where are we letting Pioli off the hook?

He is paid millions to define where they need help. Yes you can not rebuild in 1 year but you should not have to start in the same place you were at this time last year. If not worst off that you were last year. It took them until week 6 to find 5 OL. It’s taken them 13 weeks to play WRs in back to back games. i did not expect much but this season has been a complete waste of money for anyone that had to pay to watch them play this year. I see no progress in this organization.

by NFL season ticket holder on Dec 13, 2009 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

all these arguments have been rehashed constantly

I’m no saying there’s anything inherently wrong with your opinion, I just don’t agree with it. Installing a new D and new O rarely has good results in the first season of transition. Denver has done it fairly well, but they had a lot more talent to start with.

Pioli has brought in virtually nothing - Cassel aside, and no protection or OL upgrade for the QB is absurd

seriously, Pioli did no homework on this team coming in and it APPEARS he spent the off-season making slogans like “The Right 53” and “The Plan” (aka The Process) and “I’m Too Busy Too Discuss The Direction Of The Team WIth The Only Pro-Bowler Still On The Roster”

Only thing more disgusting

The only thing more disgusting than an Chiefs lost was while we were driving home where we got to see a Police chase where the dummy that tried to out the Independence police flew off the road and mostly likely threw away his life.
The driver flew over the guard rail into a spinning dive off a 50 foot drop. Had sad for them..

I agree actually

and was surprised to see him get credited with so many. The one play that stuck out to me was when the RB was forced toward the sideline by the LBs, and TJ appeared to be jogging as he chased toward the guy. Pretty disappointing in that respect.

Seems like it's alway one player who screws up in key moments

The overthrows by Cassel when Bradley was open in the endzone… Dropped passes on well thrown balls in key situations… The miscommunication on that 4th down in the 1st quarter. KC is NOT ready to win mentally. This reminded me of the first Oakland game.

I am so sick of this team

Dorsey = bust, Albert = bust, releasing Pollard=biggest bust of my life, TJ=super bust and worst reach pick ever, our whole team is a f’ing joke. I really dont see anything changing anytime soon. we will make another huge reach with our next pick, picking only who we think we need rather than the best athlete, etc. Im almost glad I dont get the games where i live. PATHETIC!

by WSPanic201 on Dec 13, 2009 4:46 PM CST reply actions

Well if TJ is a super bust in his first season

The same could be said about Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman, and countless others. I think this is a bit of a knee jerk reaction here

by Sparbs on Dec 13, 2009 5:00 PM CST up reply actions

this is like comparing apples to pizza. drafting a qb in the top 5, you expect a game changer. drafting tj, a guy who won’t put up stats and absolutely disappears and is over-shadowed by a udfa named wallace is absolutely unacceptable. i’d take the STD named DHB over tj at this point. swear to god if we don’t grab okung or fox, pioli has no idea what’s going on. he’ll probably grab suh for ‘depth.’ i’d rather hit ‘simulate season’ on madden than see what happens next. i’m utterly ashamed

Actually---

Dorsey was supposed to be the best in the whole draft!

by route 66 on Dec 13, 2009 5:04 PM CST up reply actions

What do the Chiefs need?

They sorely need offensive linemen but just once I’d like to see them draft a real QB. One of the best Chief QBs was Bill Kenney and he went to college in Greeley Colorado for crying out loud. In 50 years you would think just once they could draft a pro quality QB. Dawson as most of you know was not drafted

by route 66 on Dec 13, 2009 4:54 PM CST reply actions

thing that bothers me most is ... we needed OLine BEFORE the season started

and that was never addressed thru the draft – we SHOULD have taken OL OL OL and then OL OL and OL … and Succop

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

by upamtn on Dec 13, 2009 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

Uh... actually... neither was Kenney.

Anyway… not by the Chiefs. Kenney was 1978’s “Mr. Irrelevant” (on a technicality) and was drafted by the Dolphins. The Chiefs got him on the waiver wire.

I never said Kenney was drafted by the Chiefsjust that he was a good Chiefs QB. Also I meant to say that Dawson was not drafted by the CHIEFS. It was Pittsburgh I believe and they let a hall of famer get away.
