Draft Question for the peeps at AP

I started this out as a Fanshot, but thought it might merit enough response for a post, forgive me if I was wrong.

Star-divide

How would you feel if the Chiefs went ALL draft picks in this upcoming draft on offense and took a chance with the defense we have for next year, with one or two additions from free agency? Of course, hoping the draft would fill our needs and makes us competitive on the offensive side.

An argument might be made, with two or three needed key positions on defense, we have a good nucleus to build with now. So what do you guys think?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Good question my friend

I am actually in favor of ALL draft picks going toward the defense and taking a chance with the offense. Our offense can operate sufficiently with a couple of FA acquisitions (not pretty, but maybe win close games with a shutdown D)

Thanks Lanier :)

I was proposing about the opposite 17 hours ago. Heavy on Defense.
Safety, ILB, OLB, NT, and DB’s. with some late 4-5th round love at C/G, WR or RB.

Whatever we can solve in FA would be less we need in Draft. So says Petey!

We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

I wouldn't do that because...

I think the opportunity to get a really good defensive player at the top of the first round outweighs the offensive talent. Eric Berry, Rolando McClain, Joe Hayden are all better fits for our defense and would, I believe, bring us further along in getting better on that side of the ball. All three of those players have the potential to be playmakers in the NFL.

The only offensive player at the top of the first round that fits with our needs really is Russell Okung and he’s been compared to D’Brickashaw Ferguson of the Jets. I’m not sold on him the way I would be on the others. You could make a case for Dez Bryant but taking a WR so high doesn’t usually work out all that well.

I guess the true determination would be who is available in FA. Will it be a stronger offensive or defensive FA class? That will help determine some of the direction in the offseason.

I think our problems at NT and S are just a bit too dire

to do that. That being said, I think the rest of the draft should be stacked up on the offensive side of the ball.

We are ranked 32nd in Defense

There are 32 teams in the NFL.
I’m no expert, but I’d say we need some help in that area.

Is it just me?

If Cassel has any hopes of being a good QB for us we need to fix the o-line. Our d-fense can be fixed thru the FA market , we need a NT V.Wilfork is a FA nexted year spend some money and get him and a couple of the good LB’s. Draft Berry or Mays to solve our Safety concerns and then go o-line with the next 2 picks.C. O’Dowd or S.Wisniewski would be great picks for our team as well, man what i would give for Okung and one of those guys with our 1st 2 picks. The o-line would be fixed in 1 draft.

Fox, Williams, Carimi, Capers OT
Iupati G

3rd
Mitch Petrus G Arkansas
Jon Asamoah G Illinois
Interesting Toby Gerhart RB Stanford
Mike Johnson G Alabama
Mike Tennant C Boston College
Kyle Calloway OT Iowa

Wisnewski, or Odowd, and Mike Johnson would solve our problems in 3 or 4th rounds

Why's that killing you Steve? :P

We still get our first rounder to look at S or NT :) I’m not gonna tell you I know who all of the linemen prospects are, but if they fill the bill AND we cover some of our other monster needs I’m a happy camper. What I DON’T want to see is an O-lineman taken with our first pick (for obvious reasons). Nor do I want to see a WR, LB or RB taken with our first pick.

We could get Berry/McClain with the 1st
Cody/or a rush backer in the early 2nd
CB all kinds of D help

And Gerhart RB might be there with the 3rd

Gerhart

Hadn’t heard of him so i check him out, seem to be lacking in speed, but would be nice at fullback. J.Dwyer 5’11 235 out of GT would be great. I really like Anthony Dixon 6’1 234 senior out of Miss.st is who i like the most, that dude is awesome.

You take best player available that fills a position of need.

And this draft is too deep to not take some defensive players.

Offense

For most of the season I was all in favor of spending the first 3 draft choices on D. Both sides of the ball have not been all that good, but it is the offense that needs the most improvement in the offseason. TOP has really hurt this team and that needs to change next year. There is a TE and RB in the draft that can help our offense improve dramatically. Improved scoring and TOP can also help the D. Good safeties and an upgrade at LB can be had in rounds 3 – 5, but the good offensive players will be off the board quickly. Berry may stay at TN for his senior year and I would not draft him in the first round anyway when some good safeties can be had in the later rounds.

by chief66 on Dec 12, 2009 12:33 PM CST reply actions

Problem with draft picks...

We need all of them to be starters, and that’s not gonna happen.

by idahochieffan on Dec 12, 2009 12:34 PM CST reply actions

TE, RB, WR, LF and S

are all positions where players can start in their rookie season and make an impact. Nothing really changes from College to the Pros at these positions except the speed of the game and they can adjust pretty easily to that.

by chief66 on Dec 12, 2009 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

WR is a very difficult position...

Because routes are all timing based, and with the speed of the game its much harder for a Receiver to be able to find holes in zones. Its very rare that WR’s come in and are major contributors their rookie year. They can be used in WR screens and quick slants where their athleticism shines, but for the most part receivers struggle their first year… Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.

Do we see a problem here

Mike Vrabel LB 6-4 261 35 14*

The Linebacker core:

Demorrio Williams LB 6-1 232 30 7*
Derrick Johnson LB 6-3 242 28 6
Justin Rogers LB 6-4 246 27 4
Tamba Hali LB 6-3 275 27 5*
Corey Mays LB 6-1 245 27 5*

Youngsters and Special teamers:

David Herron LB 6-1 239 26 3
Andy Studebaker LB 6-3 248 25 3
Weston Dacus LB 6-1 232 25 3
Pierre Walters LB 6-5 269 25 2
Jovan Belcher LB 6-2 228 23 2

3-4 Linebackers at least in the Patriot/Steelers MO are 250 + and fast. We have a lot of tweeners and too many are Sloooow. Look at Vrabel’s size.

by Sea of RED on Dec 12, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

The problem I see.

We are a 4/3 team trying to run a 3/4. Players all fit 4/3 better than 3/4 with the exception of Vrabel who could poss be effective at 4/3 DE.

This really does not look bad to me.

LE, Hali,Vrable/Magee
DT, Dorsey/Magee
DT, Edwards/Jackson/Magee
RE, Jackson/Gillberry/Magee

Add Suh to that front in Edwards place and it looks dominant.

LOLB, Mays/Hali/Belcher
MLB, Williams/Belcher
ROLB, DJ/ Studebaker/Vrable

Could actually give alot of diff looks out of a 4/3 base D with personell moves.

I feel w would have been more effective playing the 4/3.

Vrabel...

isn’t coming back and that linebacking corp would be god awful, no offense. No way we land Suh even where we will be drafting. There is too much 3-4 talent in this draft to change plans now. If anything we should trade Dorsey because Magee looks like he can start and pick up a player to fill another hole.

At this point, you could argue either way and I don't think either side is right or wrong.

We need soooo many upgrades right now. The only place where we are set is at Special teams. Every guy who we can plug in right away at any position will be an asset.

That is too true

Offensive improvement can help the D out by winning the battle of TOP. Belcher, Studebaker, Lokey and others maybe able to improve the D well enough to have a winning season. This team could have had 3 more wins this season with a better offensive peformance.

No argument here,

but as horrible as our offense has been our defense is on the field too much in certain games which is a recipe for disaster. Against the Ravens the D was able to get quite a few stops, but the offense went 3 and out most of the 1st half. If the offense was able to go on some 4 – 6 minute drives for TDs, or at least field goals it could have turned this game around. Asking an NFL defense to totally shut down an opposing offense is just too much to expect week in and week out. They can do this sometimes, but just not the majority.

by chief66 on Dec 12, 2009 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

TOP

You want to win TOP? Have a great D that forces the other guy 3 & out instead of allowing long drives.

Seriously, though, I think we can expect to see a balanced approach to drafting with D given a slight preference due to the skill level demanded of the 3-4.

by Kane on Dec 12, 2009 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

We must wait for FA to be able to assess this. If we nab a big time WR in FA...

Then we obviously won’t be picking one up in the draft. I wouldn’t be suprised if our first 3 picks just went BPA.

by SoCalChief17 on Dec 12, 2009 1:19 PM CST reply actions

Thats true,

but if the team was to p/u A. Boldin of AZ, then why not add a top-notch TE, power running back and center to improve even further. No one was really suggesting loading up on WR’s, but simply improving the overall offense.

by chief66 on Dec 12, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

The Arizona offense is pretty 3 WR heavy...

IF we upgrade with another big name receiver I dont see the point in investing a high draft pick for a TE.

You don't have to feature

the TE just use him to help with blocking for the outside running game and have someone available as an outlet for the QB if the receivers are covered. They would be another weapon in the aresenal is all. Whatever the team does I just hope they get a quality player.

thats a good question

personally, i would have to disagree with going all o. the problem arises that the team is too young on one side of the ball and has no chemistry or maturity. its much better to go balanced and plug a player in here or there than replace a big chunk of one side of the ball. i also see how much just one player can make a difference on each side. check out pit when they lost troy…their season went down the tubes…with him, they r a super bowl team. granted, it takes time to develop but if we bring in a few key free agents and supplement that with the draft…and get a couple new coaches, and and and…but all joking aside, with that, we could become a competitive team next year.

by MountainManMike on Dec 12, 2009 6:04 PM CST reply actions

The model has already been set in my opinion.

We are going to build the offense with FA and through trades and build the D through the draft this year. If we do that witch to me by the moves that have been made is the plan. With a good Defensive draft all of our first three picks NT/DT, LB, S. Our D will be close to complete for a long time. Starting next season we would be able to go BPA and keep our team towards the top. We might be a 500 team next year if FA signing on O are weak, but a heavey Offensive draft next year could have the same effect and give us a contender for years.

Alot of people see a team in turmoil I see a team with a pretty good young foundation. With the right pieces in the right spots we could be very good.

I could go anyway with this draft WR has a few really good options that I would love as Chiefs, Golden Tate, Lafell, Dez Bryant, and a handfull that could drop to later rds.
OLB for the 3/4 D has some really good options.
ILB, has some excellent players comming out this year.
DT looks great
QB to atleast bring comp is very super deep and hard to judge who will be top performers.Would love to get Armanti Edwards fro App St could eventually be full time starter but would immediatly give us a great wildcat look.
TE has options.
It is such a deep draft that any direction would be fine with me aslong as we get the right players.

by kcchiefstd on Dec 12, 2009 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

Dez Bryant...Hell Yeah!

Haley would be foaming at the mouth if he fell to us with one of our second rounders. That guy is gonna be a game changer.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Dec 12, 2009 7:24 PM CST reply actions

How about we have our cake and eat it too

Sign K Dansby (WILB, Cards)
Sign C Hampton (NT, Steelers)
Sign B Watson (TE, Patriots)
*95% sure these guys will be with different teams next year, hope its with us

Draft

1. Eric Berry (S, TN)
2a. G Tate (WR, ND) – Glenn Dorsey Trade to Lions
2b. M Iupati (G, Idaho)
2c. E Norwood (Rush LB, South Car) – plays SLB for the gamecocks & leads team w/ sacks. Finding a pass rusher w/ linebacking skills in college is rare.
3a. P Angerer (ILB, Iowa) – smart, tough, all around good.
3b. M Tennant (C, Boston College) – trade 2011 2nd rounder
4. M Rolle (SS, Florida St) – too good to pass up. Falls because he took a year off to be a rhode scholar at Cambridge.
5a. J Shipley (SR, Texas) – hard to tell where he will go in draft. There are other options if he is already taken.
5b. B Tate (RB, Auburn)
5c. L Vann (CB/PR, Florida A & M)
5d. B Deadrick (DE, Alabama) – J Page Trade

-Boom, we got a revamped LB core, a veteran NT, pass catching TE, two capable WRs to replace Wade and Bradley, a starting RG and C on day one, kick and punt returners, and of course a difference maker in Eric Berry. Dorsey provides more value by trading him because Alex Magee looks like he is going to be solid. We should also put a tag on Chambers if he ask for too much and resign R Edwards to reasonable deal. Affordable, Realistic, and fills almost every hole.

by I_Bleed_Red. on Dec 13, 2009 1:10 AM CST reply actions

That looks expensive.

I would not trade Dorsey for anything less than a first and third and really don’t want to trade him period.

Hampton is getting old and that is the only reason Pitt would let him go also Pitt has went downhill alot this year and you could easily say it is partly because Hamptons level of play has dropped alittle bit already.

I’m am still not completly sold on Watson he would be an upgrade from what we have on the receiving end of it but he has never stayed healthy for a whole year.

I would take Dansby and he would be an upgrade over anyone we have.

That draft list would be awesome but Rolle won’t make it outof the 3rd and could even go in the 2nd. Tate might not even make it out of the 1st. Tennant will be gone in the 2nd. Shipley is a 3rd to 4th rd player.
But that list could almost be worked out with exception of Angerer, Tate, Tennant, and Shipley

For one we are not likely to trade Dorsey and nobody is likely to give anyting up for Page so that part will not happen.
However we could get.
1st, Berry, or Mays
2nd Iupati
2nd Norwood or a Center not sold on Tennant as an NFL Center could be = Niswanger size and weight is the same.
3rd Rolle or a Center
4th Shipley I have others ranked higher who could be left here but a good option.
No telling who will be left after the 4th but go BPA per need from here.

There is really so many options this year it is hard to lock one down as a must go this route.

by kcchiefstd on Dec 13, 2009 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

I've been looking...

at the draft order and I’m convinced Tate will make it out of the 1st. And Taylor Mays is the most overrated player in college football. I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. Center seems to be the hardest position to fill.
