No Fine for Chiefs LB Mike Vrabel's Mile High Salute to Broncos

I told you after last weekend's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos that LB Mike Vrabel at one point in the fourth quarter "saluted" the opposing sidelines after head coach Josh McDaniels decided to go for it on a fourth down.

Of course, that salute was done with just one finger and it happened to be the one in the middle.

A league spokesman tells us that Vrabel was not fined for the incident.

Why?

In the past, players have been fined up to $10,000 for similar gestures.  Just last month, Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 for a double handed, um, gesture.  Vrabel even admitted his mistake after the game telling me (and a group of reporters) that he did it out of frustration.

Ultimately, I'm not quite sure why he wasn't fined.  I do have a guess, though, and it comes from a quote attributed to Vrabel in this morning's Kansas City Star.

"Maybe they don’t have it on film."

As simple as that.  Maybe they don't.

Wow.

Can’t believe nobody had a camera on him. Pretty much everyone in the stadium saw him go off…lucky guy, I guess.

Isn't he a union rep?

come on – they aren’t gonna fine a union guy that is in the middle of negotiations with them. They want him happy and agreeable.

Exactly

He doesn’t even deny flipping off McDaniels. This has EVERYTHING to do with him being a union rep and Goodell choosing his battles.

Doesn't really surprise me

Even though it was a division game I doubt the networks will be rolling out a full MNF crew to cover KC this year. Less meaningfull games have less than half the cameras the prime time games get.

I have already put in my two cents worth on this,

but I can understand where Vrabel was coming from. I am not generally approving of that type of thing, but I think McA**hole earned at least a one finger salute for that little bit of disrespect. It just reaffirms my hatred of anything associated with the Donkeys. If it had been me on the sidelines, it would have been a double “California howdy” instead of just a single. Too bad it wasn’t captured on film. I would pay money for a copy of Vrabel flying the bird over to McA**hole.

Care to elaborate? What “disrespect” are you alluding to?

yeah McDoodoo is a real wanta be...

No matter what happens with that team, he messed it up big time. All the back and forth junk with Cutler, then with Marshall. He bought every reject in the league off the FA list and managed to get a few right. He can thank Dawkins and Stokely (sp) for not making him look like the biggest mistake Denver’s ever made. He’s immature and thrify which should lead to their distruction. One thing is for certain…he is definitely not a Chief fan, which could bring trouble.

Somebody didn't want put through a window

Vrabel would’ve messed someone’s day up. I wish we had a team of Mike Vrabel’s.

Anyone who...

flips off a Broncos player, coach, or fan is a friend of mine….I would like to but Vrabel a drink or 10 for that…at least we know he hates losing as much as some of the fans hate watching a losing team

by Tomahawk_Chop on Dec 11, 2009 3:43 PM CST reply actions

Bud Adams was fined heavily because he was flipping off the fans

Vrabel was directing his salute at the other team’s players. I bet he’d have been fined a pretty penny if it was towards the fans.

exactly

Mike vick also flipped off the fans when he was fined. This is different.

Chad 85 gets fined for wearing a sombrero, and joking around with an official, yet Vrabel gets away with flipping off another team. The NFL really needs to fix it’s priorities.

by dablueguy on Dec 11, 2009 3:49 PM CST reply actions

Chad Johnson is a showboat, he twittered he was going to do that.

He was probably warned not to do that. He continually does things like that to draw attention to himself. He is very aware that he will get fined for pulling the stunts he does.

Mike Vrable did it out of frustration, because he felt that the Donkeys were running up the score. He did it once.

Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

just having fun...

Hachi Go has said what he is doing is all in the name of fun… and will accept the fines as long as he gets them…. he claims he is nothing but respectful to the other team… i suppose the only good thing that we can take from these sorts of things is that all NFL fines go to charity…

draft eric berry and darryll stuckey.... and our defense problems are next to solved...

by Abyssmal on Dec 11, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

you know

chad is an example of why they had to make the policy to strict, this guy spits in the face of all of us when he keeps doing this like losing a 30k game check is no big deal…its ridiculous, its childish and its the sign of a WR that hasnt produced at a top 10 WR level and is on his last leg before turning into TO. why does he need to use props? this isnt the WWE, celebrate with your team, get excited, move on…in fact, do what barry sanders did, hand the ball to the ref and act like you have been there before…

hes 29 years old putting on a sombrero and saying “fine me”….Ive never been one to care what they make, but obviously he doesnt need the money hes making…

by SDChief on Dec 11, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

I say keep it up...

Chad is an amazing player and a gifted athlete. He is just having fun. This is just a game afterall. Also, the money goes to charity anyway and people who actually need it. I have no problems with his antics. I find them entertaining.

by Nick Britt on Dec 11, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

Child, please.

Chad Johnson is one of the most talented receivers in this league. He’s EASILY in the top ten… even if the stats don’t support it.

Yeah, you're wrong

Chad said on an interview with NFLN about 2 years ago that the reason he does those post-TD antics is because he’s having fun. That’s all it is: fun. No matter how much of a business the NFL has become, guys like him remind the rest of us why football is played to begin with. If you see it fit to fine a guy 30K for putting on a hat (on the sidelines, might I add, so he’s not interfering with the game), then just like Roger Goodell, you’ve lost sight that it’s just a game.

It would be great to stick it to the Donkies and Hoodie Jr.

For real!

I almost feel sorry for the Bills. They are fixin to come to an angry stadium, play against an angry defense, a scorned qb, AND a angry head coach. There are only two AFC teams officially eliminated from the playoffs. Cleveland and KC. Lets hope we really open up the playbook and lay it on the boys from Buffalo.

If guys dont get fined for rough housing after a play...

pushing ,shoving, talking smack, taunting…..then flipping someone off should not warrant a fine either. Penalty? maybe….but a fine?…NO!..And maybe, whoever decides who gets fined, thought that it was justifiable since they tried to run up the score…..

by KCinAZ on Dec 12, 2009 9:30 AM CST reply actions

I like Vrabel .. but I'm afraid he's right!!!

First kudo for the mile high salute .. loved it!!! … And now saying the following:

"You’ve got to have superstars. You’ve got to have guys to make plays. But there’s room for only so many of those guys. You need other guys that play consistently from down to down and never get you beat.

What scares me is we’re missing superstar and those how are supposed to play consistently aren’t
