Questions and Junk: Defense Edition

99802178-8ed3-11de-872c-001cc4c002e0

via bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com

Another edition of questions and junk.  The main focus on this edition will be our beloved defense.  Yes, we give up a lot of yards and take poor angles sometimes.  You can't deny the fact that the defense kept us in a lot of games.  We have the predator Tamba Hali with 38 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 safety.  We also have our favorite Brandon Flowers with 43 solo tackles, 2 interceptions, 15 passes defended, and 2 forced fumbles/recoveries.  We have the talent on defense but we need to upgrade a few positions and get some depth in others.  Hopefully, we'll give the Bills all they can handle this week and limit their passing attack.  Here goes the questions....

1. If you had to get rid of Tamba Hali or Brandon Flowers who would it be and why?  Note: You have to pick one.

2. What has been your biggest surprise on defense this year for the Chiefs?  Explain?

3. What is your opinion of Jon McGraw?

4. Will our defense have a better game against the Bills or Browns?  Explain?

5. If you could have any defensive player in the NFL besides Jarrad Allen who would it be and why?

Fun Fact: Glenn Dorsey has 35 solo tackles, 3 fumble recoveries, and 2 passes defended

Now here are some pictures for your enjoyment...

We need to kill the Bills on both sides of the ball, that means you too Cassel.  Go Chiefs!

Here are my answers.

1. Hali, because I think he would be easier to replace. I think he is our defensive MVP, but Flowers has been playing well also.
2. Jackson, just because I thought he would be contributing more.
3. I would like to see him stay on the team as a backup and special teams.
4. Browns, just for the fact that they think they can beet them, and I don’t have the weapons that Buffalo does.
5. Troy P or Ed R, because a stud safety would make this defense so much better.

Yay Defense!

1. Flowers. I love the kid, but I think we saw what happens when you trade away your best pass rusher. Offenses have to game plan specifically around Tamba when they play us…he’s far too valuable.

2. Surprise for the good: Tamba’s transition to OLB. It’s coming along alright, just need him to be a bit better against the run. Surprise for the bad: We don’t have a NT worth his salt, and the ILB’s are TBD. Ugh.

3. Awesome on Special Teams, quality backup on defense…if only we had a solid starter.

4. Our Defense will be better against the Browns. Our offense will probably be the other way around. Bills just have too many weapons for my liking.

5. Vince Wilfork or B.J. Raji. We need a NT like I need (another) beer in the 3rd quarter of our games. Hard to evaluate the ILB’s and DE’s adequately when the NT doesn’t do what he needs to.

And........

1. Hali – He’s got a motor for sure, but I’m thinking there are more pass rushers than CB’s coming out this year.

2. Our incompetence at the safety position – It’s been good and terrible, and it’s the most costly position to make mistakes at on defense.

3. Special teams all day – and maybe nickel package. I love the way he hits cause he brings the wood, but his coverage skills leave much to be desired.

4. Browns – Bills have the advantage with their WR matchups against us. Flowers can hang with TO, but is too short. Carr is not a good matchup at all for TO. Bills have also have a good RB tandem.

5. Troy Polamalu – the epitome of how the safety position is supposed to be played. Look at the Steelers without him…….

by Hail2DaChiefs on Dec 11, 2009 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

Why not...

1. If you had to get rid of Tamba Hali or Brandon Flowers who would it be and why? Note: You have to pick one.
-Flowers I love his play, but with another good rusher from the front 7, the opposing QB would have to get rid of the ball sooner leaving CBs open to make more plays.

2. What has been your biggest surprise on defense this year for the Chiefs? Explain?
-NT position, I’m still not sold on the Tank trade, esp with our lack of depth.

3. What is your opinion of Jon McGraw?
-Special Teams guy, also could see the field with a 3 safety package, but I don’t see him as a great starter.

4. Will our defense have a better game against the Bills or Browns? Explain?
-Browns…see above

5. If you could have any defensive player in the NFL besides Jarrad Allen who would it be and why?
-Troy P. a complete safety, one thing our defense needs. Other players that come to mind: Megatron, Raji, Ryan Clady, MJD, Darrelle Revis. Not all defensive, but all could be used.

Good call on Revis

He is ballin’ this year for sure…..

Nice responses.
  1. I’m surprised a bit by willingness to part with Flowers. But I’m less of an individual pass-rusher fan than a “system pass rush” fan. Speaking of which, the KC pass rush and run D both are more in need of a top-notch NT than a for-the-sole-purpose-of-pass-rush pass rusher.
  2. Agree. NT WAS a surprise. But all those tackles Tank was getting were 4-3 gap-shooting, and he wasn’t really holding the point against the run. The ready trading of him bespeaks a DEEP commitment to the 3-4 and the landing of a true NT as Pioli’s priority. Frankly, I considered Tyler to be a wonderful NT prospect and that the Chiefs went with T-Jax because they, too, were confident that amongst Boone, Tyler, Edwards and Magee, that a suitable man at the nose would emerge. I think we were all disappointed when nobody but Edwards stepped up, and he’s been only so-so in regulation. Finally, I was surprised at the emphasis on trimming-down and runnin’ the legs off our big men, expecting Tyler to reach for the HUGE man inside the BIG man, and just be a mountain in the middle. Looks to me like KC wants someone who runs 320ish when he’s “trim.”
  3. Yup. McGraw is ST who can back up S. But even as a backup, the #47 SCREAMS to QBs that there’s a completion in there, somewhere, unless, as you point out, you employ him as an extra safety in certain nickel packages. I’ve pointed out something similar, myself, replacing one of your LBs with McGraw and letting him attack up the field or just drop into short-middle zone and play “the shallows,” as Texas Chief discussed the other day as a major weak area for KC’s LBs.
  4. Not sure about Browns-vs-Bills. Bills have struggled terribly on O-Line and their starting left tackle is out this week. They have weapons, but Edwards often has little or no time to find them. If Chiefs come after him with balls, they might be able to dictate to the Bills’ offense more than to the Browns’
  5. I also like the Revis selection. But first and foremost, NT, maybe Wilfork – but is it just me or is HE not as dominant without Seymour sidin’ ’im?

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.

by hmills110 on Dec 11, 2009 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

One and 2 are one in the same, Hali, teams have to game plan around him, we need a push on the opposite side bad.

Jon McGraw? He’s a role player, plays where he’s needed and does what’s asked of him. I can’t think of a better compliment to give to the guy.

Bills or Browns? That’s a loaded question, with buffalo’s running backs, there’s a good chance they set up the pass with the run and play a lot of play action. With the Browns it depends on which team shows up next week. I don’t want to see the Browns attack that showed up against Detroit, I don’t think we could keep up.

Question #5……..I can’t go with one, Seymour and Wilfork, in the draft Suh and Williams NT………..Plain and simple we could run any defense we wanted, and the depth at DL would be ungodly.

Imagine first and second down in the 3-4 with Jackson, and Seymour spelling him, Wilfork with Williams spelling him, and Dorsey with Suh and Magee taking a few snaps here and there.

Imagine 3rd down with Seymour at DE, Suh at NT, and Magee at DE…..

Lets say they ran a 4-3 for a series with Hali Playing OLB like Thomas used to, Suh at one end, Jackson at the other, Dorsey/Magee and Seymour at the DT positions………

Having Wilfork to work with Williams, and having Seymour to work with the other young DT/DE’s………..Hali coming off of the edge…….I’m sorry you stop the pass 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Like I said I couldn’t stick with just one, I’d love to see that lineup………….

Imagine if a million dollars fell out of the sky and Jessica Biels came knocking on your door wearing nothin' but a smile.

Great stuff. But improbable. :o)

I just picked one.

Jon Mcgraw is the type player every team needs who should not start but can do so many things. On tackles he gets low below the knees, hits with the pads, and wraps up.Problem with him he is too slow, in my opinion. A lot of players have player in this league a long time doing what he does and you don’t have to overpay them. Sorry, short on time so must quit.

It's telling that there's a post on this site that has had over 300+ replies debating a moot point (Cassel/Croyle) and there's only 8 here.

We can’t ignore this defense! Remember the Vermeil years!

Our defense gave up 87 points in two weeks and the only thing people want to talk about is Matt Cassel. Classic.

I think it's because as bad as our defense is

They have actually improved since last year. I also don’t think anyone expected our defense to be great.

On offense, we bring in an offensive guru, who was the O-coordinator in the SuperBowl last year, we bring in a QB that was 10-5 and had back to back 400 yard passing games, and the expectation is much higher.

Neither side of the ball have played to their potential yet this year. Hopefully that changes this week!

"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."

They only made it 2/3 of the way on d-line. NT was a disappointment.

They could’ve done much better if d-line were finished in 1 year, but it wasn’t. You can do a lot to mask DB shortcomings and make average LBs look great behind a great D-Line. And you see signs it’s starting to happen, with T-Jax and Dorsey swallowing up 2 blockers or more on almost every down. VAST improvement over the last few seasons.

Okay Mr. jk86 this should make you feel better....let's run through the usual suspects and solve this mystery...

This is our team of shuga-puddins… I thinks it’s time we enlist our last line of defense….the cheerleaders….at least they bring it with attitude. Whoa – not so fast, I’m sure we can find a reason to blame them for being a distraction to our Chiefs

Matty "I drop my head and feel sad when things go bad" Cassel
Mark "sometimes when I catch the ball they hit me hard" Bradley
Wade "I’m a scholar but I can’t figure out this who-to-block thinggy" Smith
Mike "I’m only doing this cause there is nobody else better right now" Cox
Tyson "This is harder than I thought cause these guys are really stronge AND mean" Jackson
Corey "If I make my eyes look like mike singletary eyes everybody will think I play well"
Branden "I would play my guy tighter be if he beats me our safeties surely won’t tackle him" Carr
Branden "It just don’t want to hit anybody real hard cause I know how it feels to be hurt" Albert
Brian "used to be when I took a play off my line buddies would pick up the slack" Waters
Mike "all of my good stuff is on the other side of the hill" Brown
John "I’m slow, can’t jumple, tackle, or read plays – I belong here" McGraw
DaJuan " $%# I’m Better than Bofe-a-dem" Morgan
Andy "they told me and my buddy Ike that there would be snow at christmas time so that’s why we came here" Alleman
Ikechuku "gichi gichi gu – I tickle my man to distract him sometiimes" Indukwe

So what’s a coach to do with this mess – the circumstancial evidence points to….the apparent truth is… the revelation reveals….the solutions :

Start Brodie the remainder of the season; he has the skills and the toughness.

Use Pope and Cottam more, maybe a 2 tightend one RB set 50% of the time…I think Cottam can be very good with more reps. Pope is a mismatch for the defense….put more pressure on the intermediate level of the defense to read and react with quick seam routes over the middle and to the flats to the TE’s .

Run the Slot reciever or (Quentin L.) deep middle to pressure the Safety.

Base the offense on the quick pass/run concept and decitate to the defense rather have them dictate to us…. make them defend the whole field .

Play Belcher full time at LB….bench Corey….NOW please.

Play Castille at FB 100% of the time…don’t tell Cox when our next game is…maybe he won’t show up.

Play Javaris and Quentin. Q has a big heart…can’t catch and has poor field vision but I see him developing into another Joe Horn in time. JW can play the game.

Now let’s get mad and go beat on some Bills ya?…. I’m tired of getting laughed at.

Matty “I drop my head and feel sad when things go bad” Cassel

When has that happened? As far as I know, he’s been one of the people who’s ALWAYS ready to play.

Start Brodie the remainder of the season; he has the skills and the toughness.

When has he ever reflected that?

I’m tired of talking about this subject. Moving on…

Our defense gave up 87 points in two weeks and the only thing people want to talk about is Matt Cassel. Classic.

by jk86 on Dec 11, 2009 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

but can you do that.....

I see no comment on the other suspects….

by kcskip on Dec 11, 2009 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

here we go

1. Tamba he is a beast and we could get alot for him. I just feel he fits a 4/3 Defense ALOT better. we could replace him since we are in a 3/4. Flowers would be harder to replace.
2. Pollards release and the play of our secondary. I thought we were stronger in this area.
3.McGraw is an excellent ST player and servicable backup.
4.Both should actually be decent match ups. Neither has an outstanding passing game and depends on rushing the ball. When we can focuse on stopping the run we seam to play better as a whole on d.
5. Ed Reed we need a game changer at Safety. Revis would be very nice to as we would have to lock down corners and Carr could play nickle where his tackling and size would make him a stud at that spot.
