Mayor Mark Funkhouser was joined by Chiefs President Denny Thum today on the Arrowhead turn, along with other members united in an effort to bring the World Cup to the Home of the Chiefs. Kansas City is officially one of 27 cities still in the running to be part of the United States’ bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup.
"It is my pleasure to sign the Host City Agreement to help bring the FIFA World Cup to Kansas City," Mayor Funkhouser said. "The benefits of hosting this world-class sporting even are unmatched."

Hooliganism in KC?
Glad the stadium is a ways from where I live, and glad I live a ways from anything drawing in any hooliganism!
If you only knew...
I deleted your first picture
Because it was bordering NSFW (man pulling his underwear up) and then when I do that it deletes all the replies as well.
Just an FYI….

I think "The Simpsons" portrayed soccer the best in one of their episodes
It’s kind of like hockey to me. Too much anticipation of scoring, and not enough actual scoring.

LOL had me cracking up
Reminded me of Monty Python
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
Won't happen in 2018.
Jack Warner (head of CONCACAF, the North American soccer governing body) has thrown support behind England getting the 2018 cup, despite our very own bid (read: “thanks for the bribe, guys”). WC 2022 is more likely to be in Australia or Qatar than the USA at this point for similar reasons. It’s a corrupt, corrupt system full of bribes run by a fairly unchecked governing body.
I love soccer and I’d love the WC to come back to the USA soon, but I’ll be more than a little surprised if it does.

I think it's better served in other countries
because honestly, how big is soccer here?
If you only knew...
It's bigger than you think (that's what she said)
You can look at the numbers in the MLS (USA’s pro league, for those unfamiliar), and they’re less than stellar. Ticket sales for the “lesser” tournaments are also lackluster. However, the National Team has a HUGE following, especially since 2002. To put it in perspective, the United States leads the world in World Cup ticket applications for next year’s tourney in South Africa. And it’s not just the US national team gaining the fans. With the diversity of cultures, we’ve got large Mexican, Brazilian, Italian, French, German, and England support groups already built in.
To top it off, the 1994 World Cup here in the United States STILL holds the attendance record out of all the World Cups. That same game still holds the US sports attendance record, too.

1+
Thank you. Any of you that haven’t actually gone to a game (or played) should have no room to talk about this subject. This is the world’s most passionate game and every nation (except the greedy USA) stops.. literally.. what they are doing to cheer on their country; yes, even if their team is not so great. In fact I read somewhere awhile back that the only stock market still chugging away during the World Cup is only the U.S. markets….all other markets across the globe are shutdown and all businesses are closed. Done both
and really, it’s disinteresting to me. A game with Championship implications though would probably be more fun.
(I am guilty of watching Team USA though… when I had cable that is)
If you only knew...
And that's fine.
I get people who struggle to watch. That’s fine. If it’s not your cup of tea, then so be it. I, myself, struggle to watch baseball for similar reasons.
You find that a lot of people who casually watch their home country that get excited when the World Cup rolls around. Sports bars are packed all over the country in the middle of the day for it. I know I take a week or two off to watch. It’s kind of like the Olympics in that aspect…you may not pay attention for 3 years, but when it’s on, it’s riveting to some.

It
Has stopped a civil war for two week in a small country when there team made it to the wc people are passionate about soccer
Anyone else go to that Chivas vs Club America game at Arrowhead?
Was fucking awsome, most fun sporting event I’ve been to in 2009 and I go to tons of them. Those soccer fans put the Chiefs tailgate to shame (granted it was Mexican Independence Day).

Vamos a comer pollito!!! CHIVAS! CHIVAS! CHIVAS!
I'd rather die on my feet than be living on my knees
Arrowhead definately needs more plastic horns!
I love the constant drone. Kind of like secadas…

No vuvuzelas, please.
The constant drone we’ll hear the summer my give me nightmares until 2018. =)

Dude! 79,000 vuvuzelas at Arrowhead?!?!
That shit would be rockin’!!!
I'd rather die on my feet than be living on my knees
Personally, I like soccer.
Played if for ten years growing up. I have to admit I can’t stand watching most professional games though. The whole volleying the ball back and forth, and “Ohh my God, he breathed on me I think I broke my neck” gets on my nerves. To me at least, soccer is meant to be a rough and tumble game, almost as much as rugby.
I did enjoy watching the games in the last Olympics. Those were some pretty good games. I think my whole command stopped work and watched the Women’s victory over Brazil to win the gold.
That said, I’m all for bringing the WC to US and Arrowhead in particular. I’ve actually been to a Wizards game there, and it’s actually a great venue for soccer. That was before the renovations, but I can’t imagine it got any worse.
