For the record, Bernard Pollard was a bad, bad influence in the locker room. Not the Chiefs' kind of guy. Much better player than Brown tho.

"Chiefs kind of guy"
I’m sick of this crap. Time to stop picking favorites and start picking winners. Bowe should never have been third string. DJ should not be riding the bench. And releasing Pollard was a horrible mistake. The list is longer, but those are the chart toppers.
A “Chiefs kind of guy” should be someone who shows up to win, not just play.

And Instead Of Getting A Better Performance Out Of Them
Haley just discards players with talent because he’s no better at “coaching up” a player than Herm was. The only difference between Herm and Haley is that Herm was too much of a softie and Haley’s a miserable prick. They’re both incompetent head coaches.

I'd go one step farther.
Herm was able to coach up some guys. He was great at getting our secondary to overperform, because he knows the position.
Haley is supposed to be a brilliant WR coach. So far, the only great plays I’ve seen from wide receivers have been from guys who haven’t been under his influence very long (ie: Chambers).
If anything, I’d almost say Haley is coaching people down.
Is it too late to bring Herm and Chan back? At least then, losing would still be fun to watch right up until our “last two minutes” implosion.

From Wikipedia
Pollard’s final year at Purdue was marred by altercations with coaches, the height of which occurred in the beginning of the season when he asked head coach Joe Tiller to “Give me my papers”, indicating the preference to transfer. Tiller did not grant the transfer request, but the incident proved a precursor to a tumultuous final year. Despite this Pollard still compiled 92 tackles (64 solo), 3 interceptions, 3 pass break-ups, 1 fumble recovery and 1 blocked punt. His 5 blocked punts are a Purdue record.
All losses in the 2009 season will be Herm and Carls fault.

I think ...
He’s got a college coach mentality. He’s got the mentality that is great in college because if kids don’t jump when you say jump, you can pull their scholarship and end their careers.
He’s trying to use that kind of power in the NFL, except that the guys that he’s cutting (see also: Pollard, Bernard) actually have legitimate talent or they wouldn’t be playing at this level and can go out and get jobs elsewhere (see also: Texans, Houston; 42 tackles, 1 forced fumbles, and 2 INTs in 6 games).

You do not get it, UC
You have no idea what the impact of ONE, just ONE whiny disrespectful punkass can have on a unit. That one person makes your job so miserable that no matter what he’s good at, you want him gone.
I work with a guy like that. He bitches and moans about everything. Disrespects authority constantly. Never does the right thing. Do you have any idea how hard he makes my job? Do you know what kind of attitude just one person like that imparts on other people? You start getting the “well, HE didn’t give a shit…so why should I??”
You keep thinking that Haley is going after brainwashed people who will do everything he says without questioning it. You are wrong. They can question it all they want. They can think it’s a bad idea all they want. As long as they execute though, that’s all that matters!
Bernard was a cancer. If he was undermining the coach and causing problems, then get rid of him. Does that mean this season we sacrifice a win? Maybe. But trust me…those players are miserable enough being 1-7. Having a jackass around makes it even worse.

How can anyone be a worse influence in the locker room than Larry Johnson? I mean, seriously…his most recent remarks are the first time I’ve seen him say anything negative about the coaches he worked for. If he had a problem with his coaches, he kept it out of the press. Just Saying
If Haley’s such a good coach, he should be able to get better results out of Pollard, Bowe and Tyler than Herm did. Especially when his GM goes out and gets him the franchise QB he covets.
But in order to show that, Haley would actually have to try and coach a player up…so far he hasn’t shown he’s any better at getting improvement out of a player than Herm did.

Tamba Hali
I’d say Brandon Flowers continues to play well, Jon McGraw has been better (arguable, I know), Corey Mays, Demorrio Williams….
by Joel Thorman on Nov 9, 2009 8:39 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
OK... I accept that
But you also have to factor in that Hali is playing a new position. You can make the argument that this might have as much do to with it as any coaching he’s received.
McGraw and Williams are valid points, as they were both with the team last year. Mays was not.
Personallly… what concerns me is that when they feel a player isn’t performing to expectations, they’re simply released. Of course that’s OK – they’re allowed to do that – but I really wonder if there have been times it might have been more appropriate to coach some of these guys into the players they want.
When they came in and said they were about “the right 53,” I took that to mean that there would be players on the roster with less talent, who would require coaching to play above their raw ability. Yet the frequent roster moves suggest a different approach – at least to me.

Tony Gonzalez was also on that team. So he isn’t very good, and shouldn’t be given a second look? Oh yeah, that doesn’t make sense. When a team goes 2-14, it doesn’t mean every single player is bad and should be gotten rid of.
by T-Rich on Nov 8, 2009 11:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It also doesn't mean that players were removed because of a lack of talent.
It’s pretty obvious that Pollard was made an example of. He was their one expendable “this could be you” statement cut. Classic authoritarian coaching move.
Also, let’s not forget that Pollard was the one that ran to Haley with a tantrum about Pendergast. Poor choice, Pollard.

That's What You're Supposed To Do
In a hierarchical organization if you have a problem with your immediate supervisor that you can’t resolve with that supervisor then you take your grievance up to the next level. It’s Haley’s job as head coach to deal with conflicts between subordinates.
Pollard would have been out of line if he’d gone and whined to the press…but he didn’t. He followed procedure and he got cut. If Haley thinks he’s too good to have to deal with personnel issues, then Haley was the problem, not Pollard.

GREAT POINT
Everyone seems to have forgotten how MANY huge plays Pollard gave up when he dove for the big hit and whiffed. Brown is giving up big plays this year, but is the furthest thing from a lockerroom cancer you’ll find. Pollard was a big liability on defense… now we get to see what DaJuan Morgan has, and hopefully draft another great safety this March. I think the correct decision was made.

One in particular
Pollard was trash talking so much during goal line drills that half the offense went after him and they had to break up the fight. Then he kept it up during stretches and Haley had to tell him to stretch more and talk less. For me, I am glad they let him go. And yes I think Mike Brown is sucking.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now.

I am absolutely astounded and apalled by some of your behavior.
I will say this for the last time: if you want to prolong the Chiefs miserable ways, we can hire a new head coach every damn season. Haley hasn’t even had a full year under his belt, and you’re already calling for him being fired! WE GAVE HERM SUCKWARDS THREE DAMN YEARS!
9-7, 4-12, 2-14. Do you see ANY improvement during his era? Haley inherited a 2-14 team. He’s had to deal with a horrendous o-line riddled with injuries, TEs who can’t block, safeties who take horrible tackling angles, etc…
Call for Clancy’s head, call for a gutting of the o-line or defense, but don’t call for Haley’s head quite yet. It’s extremely unfair and uncalled for.
by SupremeChief on Nov 9, 2009 11:49 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Let me take a shot.
Yes, our O-Line is bad. It was bad last year, too, but that’s what the off-season is for: to correct issues you’ve got with noted problem areas on your team. We didn’t do that. Our free agent moves have amounted to picking up has-beens and other teams’ practice squad fodder. And we spent picks in the draft on back-ups (Magee). That’s not on Herm and Carl, that’s on Todd and Scott.
Yes, we have 4 TEs and none of them can block and none of them can catch. Seems like that wasn’t an issue last year. If I recall correctly, we gave up an offensive weapon — a playmaker who was one of our top receivers and could block — by some accounts (810 Sports) because he didn’t want to come to non-mandatory OTAs. That’s not on Herm or Carl, that’s on Todd and Scott.
We had a great secondary tandem last year. It was one of the few bright spots on the team. We cut one of those guys because he refused to be let the new head coach cuss at him, got nothing for him whatsoever, and now he’s excelling on another team. That’s not on Herm or Carl, that’s on Todd and Scott.
It may have been wrong to expect immediate improvement. I don’t, however, think it was wrong to expect some improvement and as near as I can tell, we’ve taken big steps backward rather than forward. That’s a problem that can be laid at the feet of Todd and Scott and, while I agree that we need to have some patience, we also have every right to hold those guys accountable.
