Chiefs Give up Big Play TD Near the End of the Half

3 months ago: Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, left, runs for first-quarter yardage as Jacksonville Jaguars safety Gerald Alexander makes the tackle during an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in Jacksonville, Fla. (AP Photo/Phil Coale)

Stats are here. The Chiefs are losing 14 to 6.

Frustrating is the way to describe the first half by the Kansas City Chiefs. The offense is having trouble doing anything consistently. The defense has given up some big plays (as it's prone to do) but is also looking good pressuring QB David Garrard. Ryan Succop has two field goals in windy conditions. A pretty blah game so far from KC.

And as I'm typing this, the Jaguars just scored on a 61-yard TD pass on a blown play by the Chiefs. (Sigh)

Here are some first half stats:

  • QB Matt Cassel: 8/15, 74 yards
  • QB David Garrard: 11/12, 167 yards, 1 TD
  • RB Jamaal Charles: 2 rushes, 9 yards
  • RB Kolby Smith: 4 rushes, 17 yards
  • RB Maurice Jones-Drew: 13 rushes, 35 yards
  • Jags total offense: 263 yards
  • Chiefs total offense: 107 yards
  • Jags first downs: 11
  • Chiefs first downs: 4

The Chiefs are down by eight and get the ball first in the second half. This game is still very much in play.

Let's go Chiefs!

not much of an upgrade though

It is a new Era at Arrowhead. I do not yet know if it is one of greatness or one of ineptitude. I am excited to see which way it goes, and will support my team until the end, bitter or sweet!

Why, so we could give up 60 yard runs and passes every game

instead of just 60 yard passes?

just to get this straight....

that statement makes 0 sense… if you have a bad current head coach, why would you want to go back to another bad head coach? A lot of people say that but its pretty dumb.

Kick was short, so it can be returned

it was into the wind so the Jags had a player back. He got into the clear and Colquitt ran him out and injured himself. There was an illegal block during the return. Half ended.

Charles

Why does he have less than 10 touches? MJD is their most explosive player, and he has a ton of touches, why can’t we get our most explosive player the ball? I don’t understand.

Long

Hell, at least he’s catching the ball. He should’ve gone out of bounds at the end of the half, but Bradley, Bowe, and Ryan wouldn’t have even gotten to that decision point!

The problem is not having anything that's being done well on offense

We have to be able to establish SOMETHING. Then you can call plays. If you do nothing well, it doesn’t matter what you call.

Say what you want about third down draws, but as the AP analysis showed

Haley mixes up run and pass pretty well on the first down. That’s where you have to make something happen. That’s why it’s about execution.

Another mistake by a young player

Lance Long catches the ball, he goes out of bounds, we save the TO, get some more yards, Succop comes away with the FG and get a 2 for 1. Now the running game is gonna suck because Cassel now has to sling it everywhere just so we can have a shot to win. We didn’t do shit over the bye week. Shouldn’t have had that weekend off

To throw downfield

You have to give the receivers time to run their routes. The O-Line isn’t giving Cassel enough time for these types of plays to develop.

Our best bet is to run on first down and dink and dunk downfield and hope someone breaks one.

Predictions for 2009:

LJ breaks Chiefs all time rushing record at home

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

I think when you tell your QB over and over again

not to make a mistake. That is a very bad thing. Let the guy go out there and take his shots down field. If it results in an INT so be it.
Cassel is so scared of making a mistake.

Most of us

are trying to actually determine what the problem is at this point. Haley isn’t doing well. The players could be executing better, but it’s the same old crap continually failing to work. Throw in the defense giving up big plays, and the coaching in general is starting to look consistently out smarted.

WTF

Im losing my patience with haley and his his stupid D coordinator Pendergast!!

Yeah...it's done.

Unless we do one of those “all of a sudden it’s the 4th quarter, the game is out of reach, and NOW we can move the ball” things like we usually do. Oh well…I guess there’s always next week.

This team is playing so bad right now

I’m trying to fathom what they’ve actually done to prepare for a game plan for this.

Shouldn't have HAD to prepare a gameplan

Pop in film from Titas vs Jags last week, and there’s the plan. WTF is going on here?

Talent and Players can be corrected

Hiding your head in the sand about bad management and coaching mistakes is another story. I’ll support the team, but part of that support is calling a “spade a spade.”

Did anyone think perdergast was going to solve anything?? HELLO, he was fired for being one of the worst D coordinators for one of the worst defenses in the league. It’s not a coincidence that AZ’s defense is stout this year with the same personel

Perhaps not clean house

BUT CALL IT WHAT IT IS. They are outsmarted every game. Perfect execution of the wrong play at the wrong time equals failure. It is what it is.

the D gives up big plays but you can’t expect to win a game and not score touchdowns

This should be a fun post-game press conference

Does Haley accept any responsibility?

but can he point out anything specific? my guess is he’s completely overwhelmed and can’t

I gotta wonder now if LJ gets a chance to play again

Our RB by committee has looked better than LJ

This team just needs to be ripped apart, gutted.

There are only a handful of decent (not great) players out of the 53 on the roster. We better be highly active in free agency and draft Eric Berry with our 1st round pick.

by SupremeChief on Nov 8, 2009 2:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

too late, dude ... Pioli has ALREADY gutted the team

1/2 on the roster right now were NOT with team before season started … Herm had a GOOD young crew, just beginning to know each other and grow AS A TEAM … but Pioli has trashed it, and Haley has tossed the remains off a bridge

I'm betting that will happen

even if we pull this game out and win out for the rest of the season.

OK Cassel is a smart QB but...

he is way too careful with the ball…he is so afraid to throw a td that he won’t make any throws unless the guy is wide open….case in the Long throw in the end zone….he should have thrown it earlier but he wanted to hold it for an extra second to make sure he was open

by KCCheeze on Nov 8, 2009 2:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

i meant throw an int not a TD

but at this point he may be afraid to throw a TD too

Some of us are at work

Appreciate the thought though.

I guess it is too risky for me to be on AP at work. I have had two close calls today that may get me in some heat with the Information Security Officer.

Would have been worth it if the Chiefs were at least looking decent. Ah well.

no huddle

so haley finally started thinking…?

by SDchieffan on Nov 8, 2009 2:15 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What's with the no huddle stuff?

If you don’t make first downs running no huddle at the start of the game just means you give the other team more chances to score. I don’t understand the desire for no huddle early.
