Everyone Else is Talking About the Draft...

16561_764764029759_16818785_43212796_8006653_n_medium

Everyone else seems to be putting up draft predictions, so I decided I'd jump on the bandwagon.

Here's the guys I think we should target in the first three rounds..

Star-divide

Eric Berry – S:  Tennessee

While my first instinct is to get the best OL available, passing on a talent like Eric Berry is just too hard. Russell Okung isn’t Jake Long or Joe Thomas, and tackles of his caliber come out every year. Guys with Berry’s playmaking ability come out once every 5 or 10 years.

Berry shows just how far the strong safety position has evolved over the years. Gone are the safeties that squat near the line of scrimmage acting as another linebacker. Guys like former Cowboy and current Bengal Roy Williams just aren’t in demand anymore. Berry is the epitome of a playmaker in the secondary; he can lay somebody out as well as getting the crucial interception, and be effective at either safety position.

Adding to the possible choice for this pick, as you guys know Jarrad Page was placed on IR Wednesday, ending his season, and maybe his stint with the Chiefs

If Berry happens to be off the board by the time the chiefs pick, the best OT (now Russell Okung) should be taken.

Sam Young – OT:  Notre Dame

Pioli made a big deal over the summer about bringing in the "right 53" players to the Kansas City Chiefs, and Young could be one of those guys. He has been extremely durable through the years, as he has started every game of his career at Notre Dame, which is the first time in its history.

Young is a big time tackle in every sense of the word. He’s 6’7" and 320 lbs, and could immediately step in as right tackle for this team.

It was reported on AP earlier this week that Scott Pioli himself was at the Notre Dame practice scouting players, and this was more than likely one of two players he is really considering drafting this April (WR Golden Tate is the other one). There is a very good chance the Chiefs will grab him with their first pick in the second round.

Dezmon Briscoe –WR:  Kansas

Coming into this year, it was predicted by some that if Briscoe had another year like last year, he’d be a first round pick. Unfortunately for KU fans, he’s not having as productive of a year, and the KU team as a whole is struggling. Because of this, he is not in the limelight and his draft stock will slip because of it.

Does that mean that he’s going to be less of a player in the NFL? No. Does it mean whoever ends up drafting him will get a better value? Absolutely. Instead of being a late first round pick, it’s looking more and more likely that he’ll be a late second round pick (ESPN’s Scouts Inc. oddly enough doesn’t even have him on their long list of draft eligible WRs)

He is a big, imposing wide receiver at 6′3″, 210 lbs., and can beat press coverage with ease. He, like Dwayne Bowe, is not a burner down field, but is deceptively fast and can get over the top of coverage when given the chance.

Briscoe displays excellent body control when going up for a reception, able to contort his body which ever way is needed to make the catch. He also does a very good job of timing his jump and high-pointing the ball (pic) much in the same way Larry Fitzgerald does (pic). Last year, he set school records in both receiving yards (1407) and touchdowns (15) for a season.

Nabbing him in the latter part of the second round (where the Atlanta pick will more than likely be) would be a steal for this organization and will help Matt Cassel tremendously. If the Chiefs don’t get Eric Berry with the first pick, I wouldn’t be opposed to picking up another KU kid here, safety Darrell Stuckey.

Zane Beadles – OG/OT:  Utah

Beadles, like Young, is a very smart football player; for the past two years, he has been academic all-MWC and made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. He played right guard his freshman year before switching to left tackle for the past three years and has missed one game thus far in his career. At 6'4" and 305 lbs, he's the ideal size for either tackle or guard, but could be especially effective inside at guard.

Being smart is very advantageous for a lineman – he can recognize stunts and blitzes and can pick up protection schemes very easily. What you wouldn’t realize from talking to the kid or reading his quotes, is that he’s a monster on the field. He’s got a nasty attitude on the field and pushes guys around whenever he wants. He’s very adept at both pass and run blocking, and would immediately be a huge upgrade over Mike past-his-prime Goff.

Being able to get him in the third round of April’s draft would drastically improve this team, and give Cassel more time in the backfield to locate his receivers.

I agree

I think everyone of these guys could step in and start for us day 1 next year.

For us to be competitive next year we have to make the most out of these picks in particular.

maybe we should start a petition for Berry like we did for benching LJ? haha

seems like the majority of people on here want him as a Chief next year including me

We could make the draft be like American Idol

Football by committee. It’s just crazy enough to work.

And we’d still be a better run organization than the Raiders

10/19/09: The Chiefs are on their way to an 11-5 season...I think....
10/26/09: Okay, so it'll be 10-6, I can live with that...

Gimme berry/mays and tate

And draft 5 kickers. I don’t care. I’ll be a happy chiefs fan if we get them.

Ducasse

I thought he was a guard?

by KU2010 on Nov 8, 2009 9:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think

he’s a T that projects as an NFL G…

I second Ducasse

And Sam Young would be an excellent choice to move to Guard.

I'm not a smart man

Briscoe sucks

i wouldn’t even hire him to work at McDonalds, let alone an NFL franchise. The guy folds under pressure worse than anyone I’ve ever seen. Stay away, he’s a bust.

Are you Kidding?

Look at his stats in the biggest games of his career. While not ALL are spectacular, most are..

Missouri in – 9/115/1
Texas – 9/115/0
@Nebraska – 6/176/1
@Oklahoma – 12/269/2
vs Oklahoma – 7/60/0
@ Texas Tech – 9/110/1

everyone

That likes to do mocks….needs to get together and do one post a month or two with all the mocks on there. Seems like that would take care of the mocks flooding the board. Everyone knows only my mocks count anyways…:)

Can someone update me on what our picks will be this year?

Like how many 2nd rounds, 3rd round, etc…

Bowe and Wade FTW.

Mike Goff past his prime?

Mike Goff HAD a prime???

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

To be fair, for quite a few years he was a very serviceable guard for San Diego

After today, heres what I want

Draft:
RD1 Eric Berry
RD2 Brandon Spikes
RD2 Kris O’Dowd
RD3 Mardy Gilyard
RD4 Boo Robinson
RD5 Vladamir Ducasse
RD5 Aaron Hernandez
RD5 Chris Brown

Offseason:
Romeo Crennel as DC
Bring in a QB Coach

FA:
Logan Mankins
Chris Henry
Antoine Bethea
Kirk Morrison
Ben Watson

by Larryemcdaniel on Nov 8, 2009 10:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Man, that'd be nice!

But I don’t think you’re giving those players enough credit. Spikes will go in the first, Ducasse won’t go in the 5th, lots of guys really like him. If we want him we’ll have to nab him earlier than that.

by KU2010 on Nov 8, 2009 10:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I duno

I could see Spikes going in the early 2nd, similar to Rey Maualuaga, and James Larinitas. Lot of people complain about his “speed”. Your right about Ducasse thoug. We may have to grab him in the 4th….I really hope we can get 4-5 impact FAs. They don’t have to be Grade A FAs, but players like Bethea, Morrison, and Mankins would drastically improve this squad.

by Larryemcdaniel on Nov 8, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with FAs

some mid-grade FAs would REALLY help this squad out a lot (as long as they don’t turn out like Mike Goff).

You’re right, Spikes draft stock will vary slightly depending on what he runs at the combine (remember Maualuga came up limping at the end of his run bc of his hamstring)

Another lineman to look at is the JR from Florida, Mike Pouncy (his bro’s apparently good as hell too). He’s be a BIG guy on the inside at 6’5" 320lbs, and he’s pretty athletic as well. If he comes out early, we might be able to get him at the end of the second or early third…

by KU2010 on Nov 8, 2009 11:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yea I like Pouncey

I like both the Pouncey brothers. I wonder if there gonna come out. I think ALOT of players will come out early, because of the rookie cap that’s looming…Its sad that Chiefs fans only have FA and the Combine/Draft to look forward to. I’m tired of losing, we gotta bring some good players in here.

by Larryemcdaniel on Nov 8, 2009 11:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

It is a little sad that we’re already looking ahead to next year, but hey, when in Rome…

Yeah there’s a good shot a lot of them come out for that reason, even though most OL stay all four years. If the draft is flooded with underclassmen, it’s a good draft to have 2 second rounders in… Almost makes me wish we could have traded DJ for a 3rd/4th rounder…
