List of 2010 FAs. As of now anyways.
I stumbled across a list of the premiere 2010 free agents, all by position. There are more than a few players on this list that will be resigned before we even get a chance to talk to them, which makes this list kinda pointless, but it's interesting to speculate anyways. KC has a lot of cap space as of now, but also has a fair number of players in their contract years. Let's take a look at the list after the jump.

A lot of these guys aren't Pioli guys. Which is why we can most likely cross Braylon Edwards, T.O., Marshall, Merriman, Ricky Williams and Julius Peppers off this list. I don't see any of them getting along with Coach Haley (except for maybe Ricky Williams, but I don't believe he'll be on our radar for his marijuana problem a few years ago).
A few of our biggest needs can be addressed in free agency this season. Wide reciever, offensive lineman and linebackers are all plentiful. I personally believe that we'll be looking for a new starting runningback come febuary also, but while there are a nice selection I don't see KC going after any of them. None of them (except for Ronnie Brown) screams franchise runningback to me.
Out of everyone on this list, there are several that I think Pioli and company should target:
Vincent Jackson- Plain beast. I like this guy a lot, and I'd love to steal him away from San Diego.
Miles Austin- Ripped us a new one a few weeks ago, then did it again a week later.
Steve Breaston- Former Haley WR, doesn't get a lot of recognition behind Fitz and Q, but still a playmaker.
Logan Mankins- You already know. He plays for the Patriots.
Elvis Dumervil- A longshot that we sign him, just because I'm sure he's going to clamor for a nice fat contract.
Vince Wilfork- Another Patriots player. KC needs a NT. Desperately. If we sign him in FA we can look forward to the draft without worrying about another defensive lineman drafted.
Karlos Dansby- Cardinals LB. KC will be needing linebackers more than ever next season with DJ most likely leaving.
Demeco Ryans- One of my favorite players personally; I'd love to see him wearing the red and gold.
Marlin Jackson- He'll be coming off a season ending injury, which may keep some teams away from him. I'd like to have him on the squad for extra depth.
Owen Daniels and Tony Scheffler are two other names I'd like to see KC going after, though I don't believe Haley will be working with a premiere tight end in the future. He'll slowly be working an offense together that doesn't include LJ, and will focus more and more on the passing game.
Landing only a few of these players will make me happy. Will it happen? Who knows. But this is the first offseason where Pioli and Haley know all of our needs. The offense and the defense will be set. Hopefully the coaching staff will be stable. I see no excuse why we shouldn't be active in free agency this offseason.

A lot of these guys will never see Free Agency...
Teams get a chance to resign their players before other teams can try to sign them. And really there are only a handful of players on that list that I really would like. I doubt Wilfork leaves NE. I doubt Ruud leaves TB, Brandon Marshall isn’t going anywhere. Breaston may leave, but I think he may be a little overrated in that pass offense. I doubt Mankins just hits free agency. I would imagine a handful of those guys get Franchised, so they will basically be off limits too. This doesn’t look like that great of a Free Agent class.

Also I would never be in favor of getting a FA running back...
They on average only have a 5 year life cycle. Just draft one.

Like I said, a good portion of them won't hit FA
But it doesn’t hurt to speculate =)
I don’t have the cap numbers on hand, but I don’t think the Pats have much. Wilfork should be looking for a big pay day. He deserves it.

Priest Holmes
Remember that guy? He was a free agent RB too
by chiefs fan in stl on Nov 7, 2009 8:47 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You will always find an exception to the rule I guess.
Remember “i” before “e” except after “c”… Well its kinda weird that, that rule doesn’t apply to the word weird.
But odds are that a RB is not going to find the fountain of youth after changing teams. Do you really like the Chiefs chances of getting lucky again? And dont get me wrong I loved Priest, but how much of that was really him and how much was one of the greatest Offensive lines to ever play?
Even Michael Turner the steal of free agency last year is already slowing down after one year. So yeah you may get lucky, get a RB who has a productive run, you may get a guy who dominates for a year, or you may get the other 90% who only fade.

Good point
But, don’t write a back off just because he is a free agent. It seems that these days running backs are coming a dime a dozen and their shelf life doesn’t make them very attractive in free agency.

well if Running Backs are a dime a dozen
I would rather take them in the draft and not spend any money on one.

Micheal Turner is slowing down
He has a TD in six straight games, but anyways I agree with your points. But more of those players will hit FA then you think. Teams will release players in an attempt to save money. Dunta Robinson, Steve Breston, and Logan Mankins will probably be RFA. I could see teams letting them sign contracts with other teams if the contract is so huge they wont match it. I think Logan Mankins will be a chief next year but the rest IDK about.

You can cross out Vincent Jackson too...
First of all, he has become Rivers favorite target next to Gates and next year SD will sure need his help.
by Wrestler189s on Nov 7, 2009 1:19 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
and second...
i wouldnt want him on KC even if he didnt sign with SD. He is a punk who thinks hes a hot shot.

Jackson or Sproles will get the franchise tag
unless one can work out a deal like what happened with Jordan gross and Julius Peppers with Gross signing big deal and tagging Peppers.

Its average...but they have more than a few players on theyre last year of contract
so they wont be able to resign them all…Jackson, Merriman, Sproles, McNeil i believe, and a couple others. I think they will give the franchise tag on Jackson and resign sproles because after this year LT is done (for good) and they will need to keep Sproles for both a RB and ST guy.
by Wrestler189s on Nov 7, 2009 5:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I dont care....they can have jackson and sproles...
but if mcneil hits the streets, throw a blank checkbook at that guy and get him. Young and super talented and would take away the need of spending a first or second rounder on a Tackle.
A man who says he can, and a man who says he can't are both right. Which one are you?

Also...
the limbo year is going to allow teams to put tenders on the less than 6 year guys. That means a lot of teams will lock up talent for cheap. Wilfork and Dansby will not be subject to that and I think they are likely candidates to walk. Wilfork will be 29 at the start of next season and the Pats don’t dish out that kind of money to those older guys. They drafted the 2nd best NT of the draft last year in Ron Brace so I think they let him walk. Dansby is a candidate to leave too. If they haven’t come to a long term agreement yet they never will. The Cards have cap problems and a lot of other players that need extensions like Boldin. The only other player that would be great is Antonio Bryant. He has a history with Haley and I think he would be a good X receiver opposite of D Bowe. Then, we can fill our other needs in the draft. (S, Rush LB, C, RG, TE, RB)

If they are restricted, It doesnt mean they are cheap...
Im pretty sure in the new “Un-Capped” Salary, RFA can sign with other teams if their own team doesnt match that contract. Alot of teams will let players walk if the contract is too huge.

What are the chances
we can draft:
a top five Safety
a top five Guard
a top five TE
with the first three picks this upcoming draft?
I would like to see Center addressed with the 3rd round pick.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

Top Safety is almost a definate...
Guard should be too… But i think we need a C with that 2b pick rather than a TE.
by Wrestler189s on Nov 7, 2009 5:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
our situtation isnt all that bad actually
Safety is unique because mostly we are talking Berry who is likely a top 10. The first guards dont go untill late 1 and all of 2. And centers dont go untill mid to late 2 and all of 3.
Sneak a TE in there or grab one in free agency and you might not be so bad. Like i stated above, if you snag Mcneil off FA and maybe a top NT like Wilfork, drafting FS, G, C COULD allow you to get the top available talents at those three positions. I would definitely like that
A man who says he can, and a man who says he can't are both right. Which one are you?

i like leon washington
Small fast back like mjd

I dunno if I would compare him to MJD
MJD has a lot of power, where as Leon is more of a speedy change of pace type of guy. I think of him more like what Charles should be.
by SoCalChief17 on Nov 7, 2009 1:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Washington, Thomas, and Taylor
Are all good backs who could be a #1 but I think Charles, and Savage will do more than people think and become are RBs for next season.
by kcchiefstd on Nov 7, 2009 12:05 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Agreed on Thomas
Thomas is showing that he is capable of being a featured back in the NFL. On the other hand Washington is a change of pace back and return man and Taylor is already at the dreaded age of 30 for backs.

Free agency is a bit overrated
Teams rarely get very high return for their investment when it comes to free agency. Every year teams overspend for high price free agents and it doesn’t work out. Free agency should be used to add depth to your team. The price tag for trying to make a team better through FA can be overwhelming. Even though we are under the cap right now, we could find ourselves in salary cap hell chasing the quick fix.

Actually...
Teams have won SB from FA and trades, The Pats, Giants, and Colts all aquired key players the year they won the SB.

Kampman or Vanden Bosch
One of these two would help improve the team immediatley. They are proven pass rushers and would allow the Chiefs to draft Berry, if available, at FS. Could concentrate on offensive line exclusively in the 2nd round of the draft.
by chief66 on Nov 7, 2009 12:41 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Kampman is struggling in GB as a 3-4 LB though isn't he?
And Vanden Bosch players in the 4-3 as a DE. I’m not quite sure if Pioli would take a flier on either of these guys if they can’t pan out in the 3-4. I’d rather take Demeco or Morrison to bolster our LBs, take Berry/Mays with our first pick, then concentrate on lineman.
by SoCalChief17 on Nov 7, 2009 1:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Mays is so overrated....
I wouldnt take Mays, If Berry is off the board when we pick, Then just take Rolando McClain or Russel Okung. Fortunatly, I think the Chiefs will pick high enough to get their choice of the two.

I wanted Miles Austin before KC put him on the radar...
Kevin Walter of Houston would be a good WR (no I don’t believe in LL)
Crumpler of Tenn a TE upgrade
Mawae may have a year or two left at C
I think Keith Bulluck could play DW spot
