Jamaal Charles, Lose Yourself!
Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?
You better lose yourself in the music
The moment you own it you better never let it go, oh
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
Cuz opportunity comes once in a lifetime, yo
Lose Yourself - EMINEM
I just wanted to start this off by sharing some of the lyrics to my all time favorite motivational song. These are dedicated to Jamaal Charles.
I want to say I am now a stern Jamaal Charles supporter. I have been defending Larry Johnson on AP for some time now. It seems to be a lost cause. I will stand by my opinion that LJ is still the most talented RB on our roster. He has the experience, strength, and still enough speed to be a factor. Production doesnt always determine talent...a lot goes into being productive on an NFL football team. A lot of guys can be blamed for our rushing black hole. I will not cast stones at anyone in this post. This is a positive look at Jamaal Charles.
Jamaal Charles
- Height: 5-11
- Weight: 199
- Born: Dec 27, 1986 - Port Arthur, TX
- College: Texas
- Draft: 2008 - 3rd round (10th pick)

You really cannot ingnore the 5.3 career rushing average. Although he has only 90 career rushes, he has made the most of every one of them. 41 catches in 22 games also speaks volumes of what Jamaal could do if given more playing time.
Lets take a look at how Jamaal Charles made his way to the Kansas City Chiefs.....
Junior Year of HS - 2051yrds rushing with 25 TD's.
Senior Year of HS - 2056yrds rushing with 25 TD's.
Participated in the 2005 US Army All-American Bowl.
In July 2003, the summer between his sophomore and junior years, Charles won the bronze medal in the 400m hurdles at the IAAF World Youth Championships. He went on to win the 110 meter hurdles and 300m hurdles Texas 5A state championships with times of 13.69 and 36.03 seconds, respectively, his senior year.
Jammal Charles at Texas
Track Career - In March 2006 placed fourth in NCAA 60-meter track event. In May 2006 he won the event at the Big 12 outdoor meet. In June he placed 5th in 100 meter finals and 7th in 200 meter finals. A four time all american at Track.
Football Career - As a true Freshman, Jamaal rushed 119 times for 878yrds and 11TD's - 7.4avg.
As a sophmore, Jamaal rushed 156 times for 831yrds and 7TD - 5.3avg.
Being that Jamaal didnt get to his 1000yrd goal he decided to drop track and focus only on football.
As a Junior, Jamaal rushed 258 times for 1619yrds and 18TD's - 6.2avg.
Entering the NFL Draft -
Jamaal indicated after the bowl game he would return but had filed paperwork with the NFL to test where he might get drafted. The response, which he did not disclose, prompted his decision, he said in a statement released by the school.
"Playing in the NFL has always been my dream and when the NFL report came back, I was happy with the grade and felt like it was best for me to enter the draft," said Charles, who led the Big 12 in rushing.
"We appreciate everything Jamaal has done for Texas and want to wish him all of the best," Brown said. "He has been a great player for us and more importantly a tremendous person, student and representative of our program."
NFL Combine - 4.38/40 4.22/20yrd shuttle 6.8/3cone drill 30.5/vertical 10.2/broad jump
How could a track star/Running back that put up big numbers at Texas fall to the 3rd round, you ask....well the answer is this. He carried the fumble stigma with him from college. Here are the running backs taken before Charles in the 2008 draft. Darren McFadden, Jonathan Stewert, Felix Jones, Rashard Mendenhall, Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Ray Rice, and Kevin Smith.
**************************************************************************************************************************
Jamaal Charles partial interview after being drafted.-
Q: Most people don’t think you’ll be able to handle a full load as the every down-type back. What do you think?
CHARLES: “That’s just people talking – they never saw me play. Maybe its people that have never played football that say I can’t carry the ball because I’m a speed guy but I love this sport, football, so I’ll do anything. I know I’m not the biggest person but don’t bring me down. I know what I can do; I know I can carry a load. I know I can help my team out.”
Q: Do you see yourself ever being a starter in the NFL?
CHARLES: “Yes, I can see myself being a starter. I know I can be a starter because of the things I can do on the field and I can help my team out and win games. You never know when that long run comes, and we need those long runs. I know I can start in the NFL because I can break the long run and help my team out.”
Q: The Chiefs have had some pretty good luck with Texas running backs. Do you know Priest Holmes?
CHARLES: “I saw him [play] but I don’t really know him, though. I saw him end his career with the Chiefs. I’m going to come up there and try to do the same thing Priest Holmes did.”
Q: Were you the fastest guy on your team at Texas last year?
CHARLES: “Yes, I was the fastest guy.”
Q: Could anyone catch you, coming from behind?
CHARLES: “No. When I get three steps on people, most don’t come from behind me. You have to have a good angle to catch me.”
************************************************************************************************************************
Jamaal Charles is a guy who deserves a chance. He has proven his worth from HS to the biggest stage in college football. At Kansas City his highest amount of carries in a game is 18....then 7. He has not had the opportunity to step up and take a job that he wants. The starting RB for the Chiefs. He will be getting a great opportunity this Sunday vs. the Jaguars. Its his time to show the Chiefs brass that he is the man for the job. This is a time for Jamaal Charles to display his talents and to sieze everything he has ever wanted in one moment.
Jamaal Charles....go out there and lose yourself!

You did not just begin a post with Eminem lyrics. LOL.
That said, I hope he does well too.

I love me some Eminem...
That song means a lot to me…..It has helped me through trying times in my life. That is why I want to share it with Jamaal. This is a big game for him. I hope he can take this opportunity….and literally run with it.

My gf is Eminem's cousin
The family doesn’t claim him anymore and says he was spoiled growing up. I still refuse to believe it until I see him at a family gathering, but evidently he only goes to funerals.
Anyway, back to Charles. I agree that he looks unstoppable on paper, but for some reason he hasn’t been given a shot by Haley. Kind of makes you wonder what we aren’t seeing.

The NFL is also trying to force LJ back onto the starting roster after his suspinsion maybe there is more politics in the front office than is obvious
Or maybe LJ and JZ paid someone off.

Is she just related or has she ever met or talked to him….that is awesome.

Eminem doesn't talk to the family
It is kind of a sour subject. We have been to a funeral where Eminem was there, but he sat in a seperate room with his entourage.
I like Eminem’s music though. He actually writes his own stuff and doesn’t rely on Auto-tune and all that crap.

Thats kinda weird...
He seems like a really cool dude…but I am sure he has problems…probably doesnt trust anyone.

No, don't get me wrong...
Eminem is probably the most normal one of the bunch. She calls that side of the family “the dark side” and most of them are fit for a straight-jacket, but there is a few of them that Eminem still talks to.
The plan is to have him perform at the wedding, we will see how that turns out :-)

Awesome...
Didn’t know the stats on Charles from HS ‘til now, great perspectve. I have been excited to see how Charles would step up, just never thought it would happen. I sincerely hope he takes full advantage and never lets go of the reigns. I’ve got so much confidence in him that I snake him off the waiver wire in my Fantasy league. I think he is primed for big things and I hope it starts this Sunday…

I am with you big time. I hope he puts up something crazy….like over 100yrds. Haley says he goes by what he sees now not what he hopes for……maybe Charles can show him that he needs to be the starter now.

are you going to start him?
I also picked him up but am too skeptical at this point since don’t know how he’ll be used and whether he’ll fumble. I have also Ray Rice (for sure start) and Kevin Smith. Smith, though, has some nagging injuries but they use the heck out of him. (PPR league)
The nice think about Charles is that he can catch so he could see a lot of touches.

Hell Yes...
definitely starting him. Had LJ and released him to pick up JC. Charles has more upside with his elusiveness and big play ability off the screen. I think all of us KC fans are going to be pleasantly surprised tomorrow, both with the team and JC.

I was hoping for that
I ended up starting him due to my concerns about Kevin Smith. He scored only 10.5 points in my league due to the fact they barely used him. But, KS only got 13.5 so barely matters.

wrecktastic
Like “Rabbit” (eminem’s character in 8 mile)…
Charles has his opportunity this weekend to blow up and show everyone that he belongs.
He’s choked on occasion (fumbling that kickoff, missing the block causing the TD on the punt block)…but, I’m looking forward to seeing him “spit venom” on Sunday

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now.

70-100 yards rushing, 30-50 yards recieving and a td. If he does that then our wr’s will get open. we need 5 redzone opportunites. 2 have to come as td’s. We win 23-17. Jamaal can break a big ont though and pad his stats! I hope he does. And if he does, what happens to Mr. Happy next week?

This is why I love this post. First, let’s be honest. 99% of the time when one of us have a very strong opinion about a player for the Chiefs, either good or bad, and we want to post about it, here’s what happens.
We usually come in here and start a very passionate post about our player and why our views about said player are legit. We throw a couple stats about the player or similiar type players to back up what we feel. To give it some credit. We think we presented a pretty damn good argument right?
Then you sit back and wait to see who likes your view’s or who hates them and why. Correct?
WELL NOT WITH THIS ONE…Matty came out swingin’ man. He brought a song, he brought stats, he quoted interviews. I mean he went back to Jamaal’s college days, for real. He brought the M&M possy.
He made damn sure that no matter how you felt about Charles before the song, interview, stats (all the way to college..well ya gotta credit him for it) the memories…
Dude I dont’ even care who Jamaal Charles is…after that post….I’m buying his Jersey!! Hell yah!! That was passionate and straight forward without being confrontational.
That was the best “in your face” post without actually being “in your face” ever!!
Good job Matty….now I take it that I’ll be delivering your acceptance speeches from now on??

I've had a mancrush on Charles since he was put on Madden 2009.
And I will continue having that mancrush until he is out of the NFL. Seriously, the kids got talent. He’s fast as hell. I’m not expecting him to take a full workload on sunday, but I’d imagine it’d be enough to test him. Expect Savage to get a good amount of carries.
I’ll be at the KC/SD game in a few weeks, hoping that he’s the starting runningback two years in a row.

Well prepared and well done
I am hoping for JC to have everyone forget who LJ was. Make it so young man!
I also hope that if the O-line get pushed back at all JC’s hurdling ability will be used to its fullest potential. Who needs gaps, holes and running lanes when you can just leap over the line and head for daylight.

Excellent write up
This is one of the best examples I’ve seen of how a post should be written.
I can’t wait to see if he is able to bust loose and be a real player. Haley says he is “getting it” so maybe it’s time to shine.

If the Union wants to go to bat for LJ if he is not the starter...
I hope Charles gives them no case. Heck, he already has.
I am actually very excited to see Kolby too after being out for a year.

Charles Sucks bad bad draft pick!!
He’s a track star not a football player, he dosen’t take contact well, cant run in any direction but straight ahead and most of all he can’t hold the ball.
Charles is a great runner, world class even but he is not an NFL running back.
Go Kolby!!

Oh come on buddy...
He has not had a chance to show if he can carry the load yet. He is not a straight ahead runner by any stretch of the imagination. He can cut back, spin, slide….he can do any RB move.

I dont agree with those saying hes a bust
hes had one game where he got a lot of carries, and he went over 100…I think he can run with this chance, I also think Kolby can be a good RB, but I think they need each other…we must start being like the giants of the past few years, where it was 2 guys getting serious reps, with a 3rd ready to go. LJ isnt that third, maybe savage is for now….
I like Charles/Smith at 15/10 in their split of carries…3/2 anyway…Charles has not lost that many fumbles, and CAN get it under control, he may not, but it is a problem that can be fixed…hes fast, and he takes contact FAR BETTER than anyone notices…the guy just needs coaching on when to go down, but he can make the big play, and when he takes hits, thats not when he fumbles, its bad technique, or getting lost trying to make a play…sometimes he has to take the yardage, and ive seen that in the past few games…he took the yardage that was there…
None of us can say the allen trade comes out in our favor, but I think we all should be rooting for charles, hes our BEST blocking back, he can catch the ball, including lining up wide…he could be the perfect 3rd down back if taught to control the football…he can be our ronnie harmon.

this game will tell us a lot about the future of charles/morgan...place your bets-

Right on....
Like your thinking…..
I would like to see more of a 3/1 Charles/Kolby split. I would only like to see Kolby spell Charles a few plays each half….atleast until he is ready to carry more of a load with his injury and all.

If he does tear off 100+ yards...
And I hope he does. What does that say about the coaching staff?

It says
Nothing…..it says it all about LJ.
Same plays…same line…different results = players responsible.
different plays….same line….different results = coaching responsible.
My thinking is…..if Haley sends Charles up the middle everytime you might as well forget about it. Haley should be fired immediately……he better throw in some sweeps, tosses, off tackles, and swing plays. To take advantage of Jamaal’s speed and elusiveness.

I was thinking they've made the mistake of NOT playing him.
“he better throw in some sweeps, tosses, off tackles, and swing plays.”
We should have been doing WAY more those types of plays all along with Charles.

Excellent Quality Post!
If Haley doesn’t start using this guy wiht LJ gone I am going to go crazy. WTF was Haley thinking with his usage at Jacksonville. Wake up Haley, give this guy the ball 15-20 times.
