Is our Head Coach as stupid as he seems?

I am losing confidence in the new regime every day. I was reading Todd Haley's press conference and the headline is what came to mind.

Star-divide

To me that hallway, even though you guys are in it, is still a sacred hallway and I don’t think it’s any different than you guys videotaping a guy walking down the hall naked or in a towel. So, me personally I think that stuff is off-limits.

Are you Freaking kidding me?

You cannot talk tell me that this area is sacred, akin to photoing guys nude when YOUR PR PEOPLE ARE THE ONES TO BREAK THE STORY AND POST THE PHOTOGRAPH ON TWITTER!!!

The real question is becoming, is Todd Haley an idiot, or does he just play one right now? I say that not to be cruel, but with his constant mistakes (ask if you disagree I don't want to rehash them all) and the fact that he seems to learn a new thing he was doing was unnecessary (his meticulous injury information to the press) or a misunderstanding of his roster (he had to correct himself like 3 times about when he had to decide whether Kolby was going to be activated or put on IR) or whatever else.

Look I admired his candor at first. Everyone makes mistakes, but to keep doing it over and over and over just makes him look incompetent. Can the guy really be this clueless on being a head coach? I hope to god he is faking or figures it out soon because it is going to be a rough ride if he continues to keep up at the pace he is right now. In fact, if he doesn't in 3 years we might be looking at Herm Edwards as Vince Lombardi.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

I Don't Think He's Actually An Idiot

I think he’s immature and has a rotten temper that he won’t control that causes him to make impulsive ill-advised decisions that screw him in both the short and long-term. In short, I think he’s poor head coaching material and probably better suited to be a coordinator (so he can be the HC’s hitman…which can be a big asset for a head coach).

I think he got this job too early in his career…and that he’s someone who constantly undermines himself with that temper of his. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to have a temper as a head coach or to use fear as a motivator, but he too often lets his temper control him which causes him to make choices that aren’t really in the team’s interest in the long-term. And that’s a very bad quality for a head coach.

Thing Is

I don’t see any reason to believe he’s figured this out or that he’s somehow going to turn it around here. And that’s why I think he needs to go. He’s a toxic person right now and it’s only a matter of time before the team just tunes him out and quits.

Herm was a rotten coach because he couldn’t hold players accountable for their actions. Haley’s a rotten coach because he constantly beats his players down for accountability but never seems to point the finger at himself or makes real changes. Both are bad approaches.

Does anything besides Whitlock make you think he is a "toxic figure?"

Can’t claim Johnson, Johnson never said anything about the way Haley treats them, just took potshots at the fact he never played football (He spent the time instead at NFL training camps and draft war rooms…his mistake)

To claim that the players here are buying in only to save their jobs but they really have a deep rooted hatred for Haley is far too cynical.

I think the bottom line might just be, players don’t Gatorade bath a “toxic figure”

I need to be calm when I comment here cause this is a very tense subject for me

I am quickly turning on Haley. And if you follow any of my posts, I’ve said while I hold him accountable I’m not asking for his head yet. He deserves time and all that..etc etc.

But when I logged in last night and read the post about the sign incident I went balistic on Haley. What an ass. I gotta take a breath cuz I get mad about him. He is really starting to show his true colors. I believe he is an arrogant dictator. He seems to forget he’s a coach, he’s not Stalin.

Even when he apologizes he is arrogant. He’s aloof. He is stuck on himself. This is his first coaching assignment as HC. He needs to remember that and humble himself. No other team in the NFL has ever to my knowledge shuffled the players around so much every week that you never know who to expect as a starter at any position.

He’s forcing all this new information on these young guys. He’s expecting them to learn a whole new language and scheme and philosiphy, it’s like taking a drink from a fire hydrant, you just can’t catch it all like that. Instead of patience, he berates his players and demeans them and humiliates them.

The first real taste of his true inner self showed it’s ugly head to me after their first win. When he first got the gatorade bath and Bowe ran up to him to pat him on the chest and congratulate him, he blew Bowe off. He kind of snarled and ignored Bowe at first.

I don’t know. The more I see and hear, the less and less I like the guy as a HC. He needs to go back to school and take communications as a major. He’s ruining our team again. Kind of like what I said last night. HERE WE GO AGAIN in KC. Another douche’ melon coach that does more harm than good. UUUGGGGHH!!

I hope I’m wrong. I hope he makes me eat my words. I really hope I’m wrong. But I doubt it.

nah - not quite that senile yet

look, the guy comes in like he’s the second coming of Bill Polian … at least the billing that he’s some sort of “genius” … but the talent on the team has, arguably, gone down since he got here …

he runs the place like even the tiniest detail as some kind of state secret, makes deals with NE and Parcells almost exclusively, hires a HC with zero experience who, oh yeah, just HAPPENS to be part of “The Family” … sorry, the whole thing reeks of nepotism and incompetence crossed with arrogance and narrow-mindedness, with a healthy dose of paranoia tossed in

The second coming of Bill Polian?

He doesn’t come across as an egomaniac to me at all.

IF he continues to only take players from his circle through next season then I’d say yeah there’s a problem there. At this point I just see it as him having enough to deal with coming into a new organization & getting things set up the way he wants…with all the extra work he’s going with what’s already familiar when he can.

I can’t say I’m totally sold on him, but I’m withholding judgment.

by jmcgoblue on Nov 6, 2009 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

they, HC and GM, got into the game late

they scrambled for “talent” – and picked up people that they knew what they were getting. They didn’t know who they had here. I can’t blame them for their choices. These players they know are building the attitude that the staff want in the organization. get the right attitude, then filter in more talent. to use a chemistry saying, “if you’re doing what you aughtter, you add the acid to the water.” Ultimately, you want acid, but you start with water. right now, they’re filling the beaker with water, so they can start adding acid. it takes time to fill the beaker, but I hope they didn’t throw the dropper out with the old mixture.

It’s kind-of a huge reach to see the gatorade shower as anything but a cool thing. You forget the smile, once it dawned on Haley what it was. He was TOTALLY engrossed in finishing the game. Then this shit-eatin’ grin spreads on his face. Very cool thing to see. To even be looking for small betrayals such as others are describing has me shakin’ my head.

Some of you guys, I swear, I could hand you a 50-lb bar of gold, and you’d be bitchin’ about how I didn’t smile wide enough when I gave it to you. Sheesh.

Losing takes its toll on all of us fans but if you take a moment and step back, remember what your conservative win projection was for the Chiefs – 3, 4, 5 wins or even 6? It will take time and resources. The foundation must be built (and it’s not in place yet!). Just don’t like what I am seeing and that doesn’t include the performance of the team. I hope he isn’t stupid and figures things out. At the very least he has shown that he isn’t ready to be a head coach yet. I am more concerned with the mistakes and the fact that he doesnt seem to know what he is doing. I would be really worried if it was next year right now just wondering if he is stupid or just unprepared. We know he is an asshole but I dont mind an asshole that can win.

Predictions for 2009:

You don’t know he is an asshole. None of us do. In fact, when I see his press conferences I think exactly the opposite. I still can’t see the problem with yelling at players when they constantly get false start penalties, holding penalties, waste time outs, whatever. They need to learn to stop making stupid mental errors. I guess we could go with Herm’s “don’t worry about it” approach.

Hey Red...what's up? btw UP..Red is in our crew ok? He's a softie but he's cool (-:

I don’t like the trend here in KC. If this was only the last 4, 5 years then cool. But it’s been 40 + years. So for me, this is the same conversation I’ve had for like 25 years. At what point do you say ENOUGH talk and let’s do this.

You know. I’m just at the point where I’m sick of all the “might be’s” and the “just wait” and " you’ll see" etc. You get the point. I’m not doubting you. I don’t doubt you may be right. I’m just at the point of no return.
I’ve listened to talk talk talk and promise promise promise for so long now I don’ t believe it anymore. I want results.

No I never expected a winning season. But with better coaching comes immediate improvement. Miami, Atlanta, Denver and the list goes on and on. those teams may not be superbowl bound this year. But for sure there’s IMPROVEMENT. Stuff you can actually see when your team plays.

We are NO better this year. NONE! Show me a stat that says we’re better please. I need something to feel better about. I am glad not eveyone feels like me. I’m glad there’s peeps on here like you. I like it. I’m just not buying into it anymore.

I want real results. Not huge results. Just improvement. that’s all. We’re halfway through this year and we look worse every week it seems. It’s a disaster.

You are my boy, blue.

I have this strange feeling that we are going to lay it on JAX Sunday. I have been right on almost every game this season, with the exception of the OAK game – we had that game in the bag! I know, I know…I am doing exactly what you are talking about with the “might” and “wait and see” thing…but a win at JAX is fact when it happens. That team is beatable, and I hope I don’t have to eat my words, which I will gladly do if they get spanked.

if anything because of the bye week….maybe just maybe they really put it all together for just one game…plus MJD had Cassel as his QB on fantasy so maybe he’ll tie the Jax defense’s shoe laces so they trip on the way to nail Cassel. lol

MJD and Garrard

Garrard is garrbarge…MJD is who we need to focus on. We stop MJD, and we will win…easier said than done – much easier. He is savage on Roids and gummy bear juice.

Also, I picked up JAX defense for my fantasy football team last week because they were playing TEN, and they put up a wopping -5 for me, which was the difference between winning and losing. So, I especially want to shock these punks.

You will discount that. But, that’s is part of progress and improvement. It is mental and physical attitude and preparation. You guys always get confused between Herm’s rebuilding and the current rebuilding. They are different and you should have known that coming in. You cannot put Herm’s rebuilding years on this regime. We have restarted the clock because this is a different rebuilding and that would have been the case regardless of who we brought in. Cowher, Parcells, Belidick himself, Shannahan, all would have done major restructuring just the same.

The signs are an excellent example. How on earth do the signs themselves, or his explanation of them to the press or us, have ANYTHING at all to do with the actual performance of the Chiefs on the field? Nothing. Stop getting caught up in stupid analyses and critiques of them that are irrelevant.

no kabrink, I lost my mind long ago ... has nothing to do with the fact that I never liked either Pioli or Haley from the beginning ...

I dislike Pioli’s secretive “Patriots West” style and I dislike Haley’s “in your face” demotivational style even more so … I’ve always been taught to “question authority” (and places where you don’t or can’t do that are, in my mind, suspect to begin with)

as far as “it’s making us better” … I see no evidence of improvement, indeed, I see a team that by an large looks WORSE than last year

I see what APPEAR to be highly questionable moves personnel-wise and play-calling … I hear nothing but BS and “Corporate Lines” from both these guys (wouldn’t you love to hear some kind of reasoning for Mike Goff playing week after week other than “The Right 53” and “Players That Give Us The Best Chance To Win” – I know I would)

BS moves, BS lines, BS personnel choices … kabrink, if it looks like BS, sounds like BS and smells like BS, you can be pretty sure it’s BS

I say for you it all goes back to the "secretive"

which in your mind is that you think the Chiefs should be publicly debriefing YOU and getting YOUR approval and buy in on everything. Shall I say it? ego ego ego YOU do not know better than P/H. You simply don’t have the data and first hand knowledge of these players to make a case. Tell me what team in the NFL is NOT secretive? That is simply the way it is. They all see it as a competitive advantage and so they all do it.

I also simply disagree that Haley is all “in your face demotivational”. That is what the press wants to show us because it’s entertaining and controversial. We have not heard a thing from any player other than LJ (NO surprise there – he’d do the same for any coach) and as someone stated above, Sterling Sharpe thinks the team is playing hard. I agree. I think they make a lot of mistakes but they do try hard. A team playing hard is not one that has given up on their coach. It is one that is buying in. I think Haley is far more encouraging to his players than is reported by the press.

Gotta give him a chance i guess.

Looks like we will be on the bottom of the ranks so we should get some decent drafting in 2010. Is it possible to draft a half-ass decent head coach? I didnt like Haley in Arizona and his attitude hasn’t changed in KC. But our Brass saw something in him. Maybe it was to light a fire under our young guys asses. I’ll give him the rest of this year and some of next to figure it out. I’ll give him a chance to prove his worthyness before i fetch the pitchfork and torch from the basement.

by KC_Howlin on Nov 6, 2009 8:46 AM CST reply actions

I understand

about having patience and I am willing to do that but some of Haley’s decisions involving personnel leave me scratching my head. I thought Herm’s youth movement was a commitment that came from Clark Hunt. Keeping a players like Ron Edwards and Mike Brown and cutting Tank and Pollard, who are young and have an upside doesn’t make any sense. Cutting and trading players like this and picking up players with less talent, just because they once played for the Patroits, is ridiculous. It’s starting to show now, that we have no depth at safety and NT. Haley’s carousel approach is wearing thin, i.e. his treatment of D.J.and others. Holding everyone to high standards an ignoring the QB situation is a contradiction and quite frankly hypocritical.

I don’t care or expect wins, but I do expect us to show improvement and to at least be competitive and it’s just not happening.

but I’ll give you that one, fair enough … let’s say Bowe is now better … there you go, Haley’s done something positive

see? I admit it … I still dislike his methodology

From mid-preseason to about 2 games ago, he was a different player.

Something like a 6- to 8-week span of time in which we saw real change for the better.

As for the abrasive style, I’m abrasive enough just speaking truth as gently as I can. Around about 35 or 40, I made conscious decisions to handle things differently than Haley does. But I handle things differently than ‘most everyone I know, and I know next to nothing about coaching, beyond what I see in games, little news bytes, and Coach’s Q ‘n’ A.

And I know how I speak to my closest friends. It’s pretty foul talk, with unwritten rules of conduct that both sides understand and respect, even though it’d sound BRUTAL if (Oh Horror!) someone overheard us talkin’ our shit to one another (and enjoying it, immensely). The best leaders are usually pretty abrasive, but ultimately inspire fierce loyalty in their men.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Holding everyone to high standards an ignoring the QB situation is a contradiction and quite frankly hypocritical.

This is ridiculous. This is based on YOUR assumption of Cassel’s performance – not Haley’s. I’ll take Haley’s more informed opinion than yours on this. Additionally, he is holding Cassel to a high standard. Have you not seen him yell at Cassel as well? He has.

short answer... NO... he's not an idiot

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

And have to mention that we ‘may’ need a little more time than the Cowboys did, considering that we don’t have a Hershel Walker trade waiting to happen.

They had 23 sacks in 1989 if your stats are correct.

We havent’ had 23 sacks in 3 years combined. different story….
Look at all those sacks piling up for them….plus Jimmy Johnson was already a proven winner in coaching football. haley is a first time head coach on any level.

And I see your point lanier…it’s not like I expected a winning season…again..it all comes down to noticeable improvements. Where are our noticeable improvements? Guess we’ll see them next year again right? It’s always next year with the Chiefs…always.

good comment though and excellent research tks

I think we can toss out the "proven winner in college" argument for any head coach ever

Or else Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino, and Nick Saban would all still be coaching in the NFL. There is a huge difference between coaching in college and in the NFL.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

Terrific post

Some people want a shake-and-bake solution, and are willing to go Steinbrenner on any staff that doesn’t turn one of the league’s worst teams into a winning product in the first season.

Lanier. Well said, my friend,

and rec’d. Now is not the time to lose our collective heads and go all ga-ga.

by G.L. on Nov 6, 2009 10:17 AM CST reply actions

It's a bit early to call for his head just yet.

Let’s give him the balance of the year. So far, he’s stunk, but I think his performance has dictated what his improvement benchmarks for the second half of the season should be. Better attitude, better play calling, better performance from his team for a few of the obvious ones. I also think we need to see an effort put forth to try and win. His game management has been horrible. Play the best players and stop the demotion games. Settle on a lineup and let them play together for a few weeks without tinkering. We need to see some chemistry building.

When the season ends, I’d like to see a massive overhaul of the coaching staff. I want to see a real OC and QB coach and I want to see a DC who specializes in a true 3-4. If Haley can cover that I’m down for a second year. Otherwise, one-and-done baby!

wow kabrink ... I've been calling for haley to "demote" himself from the OC position for weeks ... you change your mind all of a sudden?

or is this something “omg say it isn’t so!” we actually agree on?

I think there needs to be more accountability for Haley on playcalling, etc

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

by upamtn on Nov 6, 2009 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

nope - I've never actually called for that ...

but I wouldn’t mind it since he can’t seem to hold himself accountable the way he claims to hold players accountable … or the way he’s said he’d hold himself accountable

he demotes players and/or sends them packing regardless of talent, often without bothering to explain to the player 1) what he’s doing wrong, and/or 2) how to improve … yet he himself seems to be above any accountability … I have a huge issue with that

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

by upamtn on Nov 6, 2009 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

How do you know

what he bothers to tell the players on 1) and 2). I don’t see him as someone who is cowering and afraid to tell the players exactly what they do wrong and what they need to do to right it. Where are you getting these unsupportable opinions? Are you in the practice sessions?

Your argument simply doesn’t comport with what we know about Haley and his direct style.

Air Cassel - approved for takeoff

by kabrink on Nov 6, 2009 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

I think, as you wish him to do, Haley has told us exactly

in several press conferences that he believes D. Williams is playing better than DJ.

Air Cassel - approved for takeoff

by kabrink on Nov 6, 2009 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think he has, at all.

And I agree with kabrink. Most likely scenario with Pollard is that Haley made it quite clear what the deal was and

  1. It doesn’t serve Pollard’s interest to blabber what was said and
  2. You’ll NEVER hear from Haley what he figures is between the player and him.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Nov 6, 2009 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

No, not the same.

I didn’t think he should take all the duties in the first place. However, we don’t know what transpired behind closed doors, perhaps he felt forced into it. If he was going to do it, he should have done it far earlier. But, I DO NOT agree that he should make another OC change during the season and demote himself as you are arguing. I’m all for it after the season if he can find a good rising star OC to do it.

I’ve argued that Haley is accountable on the playcalling – he’s said so. The other thing we have yet to see is what changes are in store since they “self scouted” themselves during the bye week to determine improvements. We shall see.

by kabrink on Nov 6, 2009 10:09 PM CST up reply actions

"didn’t think he should take all the duties in the first place" AGREED!

… and the timing of it was hideous, at best

if it was “forced” on him … by whom, Pioli? then HE’S an idiot … this is Haley;’s first HC job and he has more than enough to keep him going w/o the OC job on top of it all

as for “rising star” I had no issue with Gailey before, nor would I have an issue with him now/again …

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

by upamtn on Nov 6, 2009 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

by "forced"

I mean really by Gailey. Perhaps they had a big blow up and both decided they couldn’t work with the other. Who knows? Gailey has been a head coach and anybody that has been likely has a large ego and these two egos couldn’t coexist – perhaps. He could probably get along with Herm because just like his players he let him do what he wanted and demanded no special performance or accountability.

Total speculation on my part but I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility.

Air Cassel - approved for takeoff

by kabrink on Nov 6, 2009 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

That's a possibility.

Another (projecting my own personality onto Haley’s) is that Haley saw things happening that he couldn’t be calling Gailey out on or stepping on his toes to make it right in his own eyes, and he wouldn’t’ve felt right about steppin’ on Gailey’s toes all day long. If Haley’s at all like me, it’d be fruitless to pretend something didn’t bug him, if it were buggin’ ‘im, especially if he’s the guy ultimately responsible if things aren’t going right.

  1. It’d either eat him up inside to put a lid on it, or
  2. It’d make for a very sore relationship with a man he probably respects – a LOT.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

No matter what…you can’t take away the fact that they got a new coach and a new QB…the QB part is huge…all that chemistry with BM and Royal…gone…here comes Orton who never played for the Broncos before and wham!! They got chemistry. Their defense is a whole NEW scheme…don’t forget that…and they had a LOUSY defense last year… I mean God Awful last year….so it can be done….

I don’t care that we’re not Denver. I do care that we’re still the same ol’ chiefs with no visual improvement at all.

Broncos were 8-8 last year, Chiefs 2-14

Broncos had (have) a lot more talent on their team than the Chiefs. Especially with on the O-line. I disagree with them having chemistry…. we’ll see how they fare against good teams. Orton looked terrible against Bal last week when they were pressuring him

2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp

consider yourself colored ... Red

but see, you (and others) seem to want to give Haley (and Pioli) a pass on pretty much everything … there’s an excuse for everything that wouldn’t be tolerated if it was Herm … or Marty or Vince Lombardi for that matter

you have a good point about “different persepectives” and I won’t argue that, in fact it’s one reason I love me some Jason Whitlock (while a good number of people here won’t even read his articles because … well, just because “he’s Jason so he must be wrong; I disagree with him on this or that so he must be full of $hit about EVERYTHING” or something)

I do like reading posts that have a different perspective, even different views than mine IF they are sound, logical and backed up by facts and reason (and yours, for the most part, are) … doesn’t mean I agree with all you say, but I appreciate your time and effort and explanations, etc …

I’d like to think that the same is said of (most of) my posts as well … I don’t expect everyone to agree, but …

Which is sort of what happened in Chokeland

Al Davis developed such a poor reputation after all the coaches he chewed up and threw away that he had to turn to a college-level offensive coordinator. Then even that guy only got a couple seasons, if that, and Davis took a desperate chance on an in-house assistant who is still there.

What about

cutting loose good players and bringing in lesser talented ones. I question their ability to evaluate players. Why cut or trade a player unless you have a better one in the wings. Why not wait until the off season to upgrade. I understand shuffling players on the PS but why cut guys like Pollard,Turk and Tank. Why do you have 3 or 4 TE’s? The wide receiver mess. Why not a QB carousel? Too many mistakes.

And he will continue

to be an idiot until he wins us the Superbowl within the next 5 years. Then everyone will be on here saying, things along the lines of:

He is the best HC that has been with the Chiefs since 69.
The man is a genius, did you see how his playcalling tore that other team apart?
I am so glad Haley is here…it was rough, and I really hated the guy when he first got here because he didn’t talk, act, conduct himself exactly as I wanted him to, but you know what he sure changed the way the team plays the game.

Patton was a dick too and a lot of people didn’t like him but he sure got the job done.

The guy ain’t perfect, there is no doubt about that. And he does have some faults. But hey, last time I looked in the mirror I saw that I was the same way and I bet that if by chance everyone took the time to get off of their high horse they would realize that they aren’t perfect and have their faults as well.

One thing is for certain, someone thought highly enough of him to hire him. Let’s give him at least a full year, maybe two before we strap him to a pole and run him out of town.
