Joe Delaney ... a true Hero.
First things first, I want to respectfully ask for a moment from Arrowhead Pride. I hope that you don't mind that I joined only to make this one post. I am a Jaguar fan who is originally from West Monroe, Louisiana. Although I never met Joe Delaney, I use to visit my grandpa and my uncles' families in Haughton, where Joe lived. I also use to visit often Chennault Park in Monroe where Joe Delaney drown. I was 13 years old when he died. I was telling my wife about Joe the other day and was showing her a satellite map of Chennault Park and where Critter's Creek, the water park where I played as a child, had been. Just south of the golf course and northwest of the remnants of the water park is a small two acre pond. I remember the news report of three children crying out for help and of a brave man who couldn't swim well. I remember hearing of how he didn't think of himself, but of the lives of those children. Though two of those children died, one with Joe and one at the hospital, one lived on. I don't know where he may be today.... but he lived on because of Joe.
As I read the words of President Reagan, when our nation honored Joe Delaney, I wondered how often he is remembered. I sent an email to my brother with the links that I had showed my wife, so that he could remember Joe with his family as well.... so that he could show my niece and nephew the story of a true hero.
While wearing #37 on the field, he made Chiefs fans proud. While living life, he made us all proud. When going to play golf, I never went past that pond without thinking of the sacrifice he made. When I am home and I see the place where the water park use to be I think of him and I tell the story one more time. If we all continue to do so, Joe can change lives for as long as we tell the story and a truly great man will never be forgotten.
Thank you for allowing me to honor one of your greats.

Joe Delaney
was the reason why I became a Chiefs fan when I was a kid. My dad used to take me to the games and as far as I was concerned, there was no other player on the field. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for reminding us of Joe. We do remember and then forget

Joe is the definition of a true hero
Thanks for sharing your story, I’ve thought about him a lot over the years.
Wow man...
Nice memorial. Its so true. I remember when they put up that 50 Year video with Trace Adkins and that part they showed Delaney and he said “Unforgettable Valor”…i rewatched it probly 20 times and teared up every time…
Don't forget to be an AP-vangelist...Tell A Friend...
Amen
I remember when that happened, as it was one of my first few years as a chiefs fan, at 9 yrs old. Still have his rookie playing card put away as well. He represented KC well and will always be remembered as a great chief, and a great man.
thank you..
I wish everyone had in them what Joe Delaneh had in him.
All losses in the 2009 season will be Herm and Carls fault.
Joe Delaney represented the very best of us
We have our problems but for the most part we are good honest people. The team isn’t about wins or losses alone…it represents the city too. Joe was everything good about us and what we would hope to be. He will always be a part of this team and his story should be told again and again.
Rec'ed Thank you for the post
Someone who is better at it than I should post the links here of the other post and articles AP has had on and about Joe, Excuse me Mr. Delaney, He deserves all the respect we can give. I was young when he passed but it made a huge impression upon me, I always wanted to test myself to see if I could live my life at his level, and to this day I still feel lacking. I joined the Navy at 17, and served well, becoming a shipboard fire fighter, a military policeman, and an air sea rescue diver. when I retired I moved to south Mississippi and joined an under staffed volunteer fire department and have given now over 3 gallons of blood. But to this day I can not say I’m anywhere equal to Mr. Delaney’s sacrifice. He was what all people should strive to be, not only gifted to play sports but willing to give his all for the sake of another. Bless you Joe I wish more would follow your lead and think about others before themselves.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?
I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!
Joe Delaney
Man what a great guy, great person. The things he could of done if he lived.I even did a project on him last year and learned a lot about him. But man, just imagine the things he could of done with a few more years, he was already a very good back. He could be holding the Chiefs rushing records

Great post, rec'd
Always amazes me how someone can be so selfless and then looking at today’s running back situation with Larry Johnson — it is like polar opposites.
Every time I see a #27 jersey in the stands at a Chiefs game, I wonder why they bought that and not #37.
Hero indeed
Though they were not good years for the Chiefs Joe Delaney was a bright spot on this team, giving us hope for the coming seasons. His tragic loss struck the majority of us fans with as much impact as DT’s did. He was something special on the field and obviously off the field as well.
It is time to retire his number.

+1 and rec'd
An excerpt from the original article, “For those of you wondering why Joe’s #37 isn’t one of the Chiefs’ officially retired numbers, it’s because Lamar Hunt set the standard of retiring a Chiefs player number only when they have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
absolutely
or at least make an amendment for a special citizen and outstanding ballplayer in this instance

While his number has never been officially retired, to this day his number has not been worn by another Chiefs player.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
LeMarkits Holland was the name of the one that survived. His brother and a cousin did not make it.
LeMarkits later stated that he felt the water filling his lungs right before a monstrous hand grabbed him by the shoulder and heaved him from the deep end like a Barbie doll. Joe dove in further to rescue the other two. Both boys drown as did Joe.
Now 36 years old, LeMarkits was convicted and did his jail time in 2003 for cocaine distribution. It haunts him to this day that he survived and his brother Harry didn’t.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
I remember his passing every once in a while
It always makes me stop and think when it pops into my head. I can’t swim very well myself and I wonder if I would have just jumped in and tried to help. The link below is to an article that Rick Reilly wrote in 2003 in SI. My wife always wondered why he was my favorite Chief of all time and I had her read this and she understands. If only more people were like him. LJ should take a long hard look at what “selfless” means. Mr. Delaney died when I was 15 years old. I’m 41 now and every sports team I’ve ever been on since I’ve worn #37. I just respect the man.

More on a REAL hero
And a little background on why that article was written:
And for a write-up about his on field performance that first year:Sure is nice to read about a guy who was not only a great athlete, but also a great person…proven by laying down his life without hesitation.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
10/28--The Koolaid buzz is beginning to wear off. Maybe drop this back to my original thoughts on the year. Chiefs go 6-10 (and that my be optimistic!). LJ gets a restraining order to stay 1400 yards away from the Chiefs. I'll let the rest stand for now.

Thanks Again.
Thought I ‘d stop back in and say thanks…. for the opportunity to share a memory, for telling me yours, for filling in parts of the story I didn’t know and for letting me be a part of the Chiefs family for a day.
I feel like Joe has been here with us while we remembered him.
Oh, and KC Fanatic… to you and all who have served my country, thank you again.

Rec"d to the highest…I named one of my fantasy teams Joe Delaney…He lives on in CBS’s fantasy football.
I miss my buddy
I worked at a little fish shack in K C joe came in a lot. he would sit down with me and just talk. I have a lot of photos of us. he gave me a lot of CHIEFS stuff . he also got me my season tickets. not once did i ever hear him say a bad thing about anyone. I would joke with him about how he was drafted in the 2nd round. He would just smile and tell me how lucky he was. but i was the lucky one. I miss ya man.

Wow, that is awesome
Did you ever get an autograph? Joe Delaney autographs are very hard to come by and worth quite a bit.
Thanks for the post man
I never knew who Joe Delaney was, but a couple of Google searches later and now I know a little bit more about my favorite sports team. It seems like he was a great man, it’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of him. RIP.
Larry Johnson
