Don't Blame the OL, WR, QB, or RB Blame the playcalling.
I think it is time we put things in their proper perspective. After watching a total of seven games and four preseason games. I am not willing to say that any of the players we have on the offensive side of the ball suck.
The reason is simple. None of these guys over the last three years have really been given an opportunity to succeed.
The offensive play-calling on this team over the last three years has been terrible!
more after the jump
Since Vermeil left this team the offensive has been dumbed down to running on every first down, running only up the middle, draw plays on third and forever. and frankly i am sick of it.
Gone are the days of running sweep, pitch and off tackle plays, instead we get delayed hand-offs, running dive plays up the middle and draw plays
gone are the days of the deep post and deep outs and TG over the middle for 20 yards, instead we get WR screens and 5 yard slants. you want to really know why it seems our OL can't block, our RB don't get positive yards and our wide-outs can't get separation.
Its because Herm Edwards took one of the most prolific offensives in NFL history and destroyed it, Now our opponents instead of being fearful of getting burned deep, do nothing but stack the box. You see when you are so predictable and only play between the hash marks it makes opposing defenses job easy.
The worse part is Haley has continued this offensive nightmare. instead of getting the ball out on sweeps and pitch plays we run up the middle. Instead of throwing it deep every once and while, we throw it no further than 10 yards.
Did you know this team leads the league with 93 negative plays. Why do you think that is? it is because the other teams has 11 guys in the box and know we are getting ready to run up the middle. Then our wide-outs get worn out trying to block linebackers for a 2 yard gain! its stupid, throw the damn ball deep every once and while, what the hell do we have to lose, another game. Oh no not that!
I don't know about you but i want to see some God damn effort, i am tired of three and outs. Sorry for rambling on but i am tired of this impotent play calling

To be fair...
Edwards didn’t single handily destroy Vermeil’s offense. It died with the retirements of Roaf, Shields and Tait moving on to Chicago. I’m not going to say the play calling hasn’t been suspect, because it has. But, Haley doesn’t really have too many options with the line that we have. Say what you want, but we might have the worst run blocking offensive line in the NFL. Also, they are probably top 3 worse in pass protection. The team better show improvement in the second part of the season or I will raise my eyebrows concerning Haley.

i disagree
the playcalling became progressivly worse, now everyone just stacks the box. there were still good players here when vermeil left. Scheme can also contribute to a team playing poorly
Ask yourself this Could Roaf, Shields, and Waters have been succesful running on every first down, and running draws on thrid and 20.The answer is NO!
Could our current line be succesful throwing deep and backing the defense up. We dont really know do we!

you're wrong, teabag ... your premise about Herm destroying the offense ... dead wrong
the team got OLD, and in a hurry … Roaf, Shields, Green, Holmes just for starters … LJ is, well, LJ … these WRs couldn’t get down the field in a hurry if Cassel’s life depended on it … the O-Line sucks, RB sucks, WRs after Bowe suck, TE sucks and QB is average at best … Vermiel couldn’t do a thing with this group

Vermeil would atleast be creative in trying more than running up the middle
and if these guys suck so bad, why are we trying plays only good players could be succesful at? why not throw the ball downfield? Does running a sweep take longer than a dive play? what about throwing the ball to the running backs coming out of the backfield? I guess only great players can perform those plays. Could it be that those players were great because they played in a good offense? think about it

You just don't get it
Throw down field to an empty downfield and an incompletion because Cassel only has 1 second to throw and no receiver will get there that soon? Is that going to move the defense off? NO, they’ll let us throw long incompletions as many times as you wish. In sets of three.

"one or two times"
i can remember a small handful of instances this season where they have attempted the deep ball to try and “burn them one or two times.” Just from what i can remember off the top of my head, i’m recalling a play with jamaal charles and another with lance long that both could have resulted in a touchdown. in both those cases haley, our head coach and play caller, called a deep route to do exactly what you are complaining about, and the players involved in those plays did not execute. i’m afraid this has been attempted a small number of times this season for a reason.
and i’m also going to stick up for the OL a tiny bit here. i definitely agree that we’ve had pass protection issues (this can’t really be disputed, can it? wouldnt that have an inherent effect on our offensive and specifically passing production?) but from some of the breakdowns i’ve seen of the plays and protections, it seems that we’ve had a lot of pressure from opposing defenses due to the TEs and RBs not being effective blockers. i’m definitely not removing all blame from our OL, because there’s definitely some to give out. but i think it’s fair to be given credit where credit is due, and it seems to me that with obvious pass protection deficiencies, as well as cassel’s inability to produce the deep ball, those factors would have a drastic effect on the playcalling. (at least i hope a smart coach would take these factors into consideration… it’s that whole square peg \ round hole idea)
think about it this way. say haley wants to be a little bit more cavalier and start gunning it downfield just to “back them up a little” and it doesnt go according to plan most of the time because of the reasons i mentioned (which are real). you are susceptible to all sorts of bad shit, an incomplete pass being the least of our worries (a pick-6 comes to mind). suddenly you’re putting even MORE pressure on your young defense, instead of maintaining a little more of a balance. i’m not saying we’ve had a successful balance this year, but i personally commend the ways that haley has tried to overcome some of our problems.
it may not be pretty, but i’m not sure there’s many coaches that would come across as “successful” with this group of players. herm sure didnt.
if rhymes were valiums, i'd be comfortably numb

All I have to say
is that halfway through the season, Haley for Herm wasn’t too much better. perhaps a bit premature, but vermeils and Peterson’s horrendous drafts left Edwards in the gutter, along with his lack of discipline , game management, and playcalling. Yet last year our team was more productive offensively, and we didnt have cassell. Jamal Charles looked really good and fast as hell on some of those plays.
Im not making a case for Herm , but Haley’s offense doesn’t seem much better. I know he is trying to set a mind set, but running draws with johnson or just running up the middle every time is not logical playcalling. Another thing is his imagination and creativity in his play making. I have seen flashes of some good plays, but he needs to do something different. maybe L.Johnson being out will change his habits.
If I had to pick which side of the ball was better, I wouldnt pick neither as it seems they both have regressed. I would pick the special teams, they have been solid for the most part.

Funny
I must not be watching the same games…
I’ve seen us try to run sweeps. They exploded in the backfield resulting in one of those negative plays. LJ catches the toss play just in time to be tackled in the backfield…
Sorry, I don’t think Haley has given up on trying these plays yet, but so far we’ve been unsuccessful in executing them. I think the bye week has allowed them to install some new wrinkles. Hopefully, we’ll see some improvement.

C'mon guys
This is a team effort from Carl to Herm and on to the present crew. There are cases for failing grades for Pioli not protecting his own $63million investment. Haley canning his OC two weeks before the season and taking on two additional roles over and above his HC duties. His methods are questionable, his play calling is questionable and he largely wasted the off-season preparation for the offense. The DC is a joke and we’re running a tweener system that really isn’t going anywhere. Our secondary has been exposed as a weak-link when we all thought it was a strong suit. Our big money RB is a heartless punk. We’re all painfully aware that this list can go on and on. It’s pointless to try and boil it down to one thing or another when it’s clear to all that there are so many things wrong with this team.
Why don’t we look for the bright spots? Haley has clearly been humbled. You can see it in his demeanor on the sidelines the last few weeks. We’re likely to draft top-5 (I know, again). We have two second rounders. There are a few young players showing some signs of life out there. We’re moving to O and D schemes that ultimately rely less on top notch players and more on the overall team concept. Although we’re not completely finished making the transition on either side, in the long run it should pay off with a damn good team. And we’re not talking about a team that’s going to be good for a year or two.

But there’s a start. I’d like to see them get out of preseason mode and play the best players. Stop demoting guys like DBowe and DJ and make them earn their keep. Play the same group of O-line guys for two or three weeks in a row to see if they can settle into a groove. Play the shit out of Charles and toss it to him out of the backfield a’la Tomlinson. Trouble with the play fake and THIS team is the run blitz works just fine as a pass blitz. There’s nothing in the arsenal, as yet, that can punish a defense that just wants to play downhill all day.

I agree there seems to be more room to the edge,
and LJ can still turn the corner, once he gets up a head of steam. But we’ve also seen plays meant to run outside that were stillborn.
Playcalling will never look good when execution is poor.
Would I do things a bit differently? Yes. To my eye, he’s trying to run AZ’s offense with personnel who don’t fit it. But before goin’ ballistic on his failure to go ballistic, keep in mind that Gailey’s offense also faced defenses that habitually sat on routes, stuffed the box, with no fear of being beaten down the field.
Those futile runs up the gut are Haley TRYING to set up a little playaction. It doesn’t even have to be very productive in order to buy the QB time, as long as you’re stubborn enough to sell it.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I don't think Haley's attempts to set playaction up are working..........
It’s a suicide mission for a quarterback with a sub-par o-line to run playaction if just one of the defenders doesn’t bite…….open season. Maybe he should try doing it with one of our faster backs using some misdirection.

but when your players fail to execute…it looks like the worst play ever
by KCCheeze on Nov 6, 2009 12:25 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think both parties are right.
I think we should mix it up more and go for some different type plays. That would be wonderful. Your right about that.
But it’s also very true that every time Cassel tries to set up to throw long, he get cream of wheated!! He gets leveled. I mean immediatley.
There is no way to overcome this right now IMO. we’re shot in the leg at every turn. We don’t have the talent across the board to confidently call any play other than the short routes for 2 yards because we have .03 seconds to set the play up and get the ball out.
I also see haley not designing plays that can be executed with our lack of talent, I’ll say it again, all he has to do is watch what McDaniels is doing over in Denver for Orton’s very average ass.
I don’t think it’s rocket science here. We are horrible in every category statistically. So that means what it means…we suck across the board. There’s no strong point to go to. We don’t have a Miles Austin. Or Adrian Pederson. Or a great O line or defense or receiving corp or anything. We’re stuck. Our leaders have failed this year to get the job done.
At this point all we have is next season to look forward to…..AGAIN!!
by krayfish on Nov 6, 2009 7:59 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Orton's very average ass spent a LOT of time on the turf last week, or did you miss that game?
Denver’s heading into the strength of THEIR schedule. I suspect they won’t fare very well.
Even with the 1 loss, they’re still viewed as a dominant team, but, recall, that first game against Cincy turned on a single fluke play at the very end.
And did you notice? Denver’s bringing Ty Law back out of retirement, yet again. Is their secondary showing cracks?

not sure what that means never watched a football game though…romo was struggling until Austin stepped up. We don’t have an Austin. Minnesota hung around on the strength of their defense and running game until Brett came along. We dont have a running game or a defense. And we don’t have brett favre.
We dont’ have a Belichek and we don’t have any talent. Where’s the problem with that matthias? Where’s our talent then? Maybe I missed it somewhere along the way as we were losing every game and holding down the basement in stats all year.

I never said our team has talent. The whole point of the post was that there was enough talent to compete, and the play calling was holding the team back. What I’m saying, is that for a team that never does anything but run up the middle, we sure pass a lot on 4th and short. We’ve also run reverses, flea flickers, and even had Bradley throw a pass. You can’t expect a team to throw long all the time when Cassel missed two easy TD passes (Charles and Wade) where the receiver had gotten behind the entire defense. The fact of the matter is, we have a line that can’t block, a running back who doesn’t care, receivers who can’t get separation, and a quarterback who’s shown he can’t consistently hit his target. Having Vermeil and Saunders back wouldn’t change a thing.

You are blowing your own opinion out of proportion. Its not like we never go deep! i’ve seen em throw it deep. Too bad Cassel over threw Charles or it would have been a TD and too bad Lance Long couldn’t make the phenominal catch that would have been a TD, but they are starting to throw deep more often. And what do you think Chambers was brought here for, warm the bench? I think not. The o-line is terrible, talent wise. I dunno why its so hard to see this. Brian waters looks good when he is your worst o-line man, not so good when he is your best.

We dont have
the talent. Im as sick as anyone of seeing that run up the middle that goes no where, but if the line was getting any push, then it would be going somewhere. If we could stop getting dumb penalties, then we could have a manageable 3rd down. We are trying all types of things out there, but we dont have the talent. Just about every other team has players who you know their names because they are pro bowl caliber players. We do not have that. Out side of Matt Cassel, all of our other players are only known by chiefs fans. We have to upgrade the talent. Some of our up grades will be achieved by players like Dorsey and Jackson developing experience, but many of the other upgrades will have to come from outside. If you look at our whole team, we only have about 5 or 6 players who would be starters on other teams.
