Babb Tweets about OL possibilities for 2010
"Albert move to RT? It's possible, but believe it or not, RT is a very different position than LT. Moving to LG would be easier."
"If I'm building the Chiefs (and we all are thankful I'm not), I add a premiere RG in free agency, draft Berry/Mays and best avail OL with 2b"
"KC is fortunate that Albert has experience playing LG and could do it in the NFL, and Waters could play C as he ages. Options are good."
Interesting that KB brings up the idea of moving Albert to LG and Waters to C...
I have been arguing that Waters to C wasn't likely, but Babb may know more than me :)
Okung * Albert * Waters * Ndukwe (or FA) * O'Callaghan???

Just as long as we have a center
Who will stand the hell up after snapping the ball instead of being hurdled by someone FATTER than Jason Whitlock!

Am I the only Chiefs fan that hasn’t given up on Albert at LT??
by JrGrayson on Nov 5, 2009 3:38 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
NOPE
I still think he could work out
but, to quote KB… “Options are good”
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

I've been preaching Albert at LG
I think he can be a good LT but a great LG.
I’d like Waters at center and I’d like to see them spend some good money on a RG. I’m holding out hope O’Callaghan can hold down the fort at RT.
by golfbard on Nov 5, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d rather have a good LT and a good LG then a decent LT and great LG though.
by JrGrayson on Nov 5, 2009 4:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well my point is
I’m hoping one of these guys like Okung grades out as a better LT prospect and fits there better. Remember Albert was a natural guard and we switched him to LT.
by golfbard on Nov 5, 2009 4:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually I remember hearing that...
Albert was originally a LT, but when D’Brickashaw Ferguson (I think) came in, they moved Albert to LG. They had 2 NFL LT’s on the same team! Anyway, I could be wrong and either way Albert can play both positions.
If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

I believe what happened is that they planned to move Albert to LT after Ferguson left.
Albert was dinged up before the start of his last season and they had Eugene Munroe playing LT so they just kept it like that.

Might be kinda sketch havin' a pair of high 1st-rounders so close together on the line.
I wonder about the longer-term. If there IS a LT who would CLEARLY be an upgrade at LT, then by all means, get him. Short-term, you could move Albert inside, but you might be storing up trouble for yourself, and eventually plan on moving Albert off the team, entirely.
When I watch Albert, I don’t see a slow-footed Victor Riley. I see a guy who can hold down that position, and I’m lookin’ to add a quality FA G/C/RT and a 2nd- and maybe a 3rd-rounder to generally beef things up. I think RT&C are more critical to the functioning of the group, as a whole.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

No you aren't
but he has played G before (his original position) and that will fix 2 holes with 1 draft pick….

Drafting or Signing a LG
Would do the same thing, I think Brandon can play LT in this leage
OHANA!
by darwithabar on Nov 5, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I really believe that we must upgrade the interior of this line. Whether that be through FA or the draft we need C,G, and some TEs that can block.
by kc2win on Nov 5, 2009 3:38 PM CST via mobile reply actions 0 recs
Depending on when we pick
(still holding out for 3 wins in the second half of this season), its becoming more and more apparent to draft Berry/Mays. I totally agree with “get OL in FA.” I just couldn’t imagine drafting an O-Liner in the top 3 picks of the draft. Use up one (or both) of our seconds.

I like the looks of that
potential offensive line. In fact, I like it very much.
by G.L. on Nov 5, 2009 3:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
me too
Imagine if they got Logan Mankins?
Okung * Albert * Waters * Mankins * O’Callaghan could be DOMINANT
However, I want Berry in the first, so I’d settle for a 2nd round LT, like Ciron Black, or Jason Fox or Sam Young
I’d also really like to see a Center drafted, like O’Dowd or Tennant
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
by stagdsp on Nov 5, 2009 4:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
But Mankins plays left guard. I would rather keep Albert at LT and bring in Mankins at LG. I don’t think there is any way Belichick lets Mankins walk though.
I am also not very high on Okung at all. I would take Ciron Black at 2a and take Eric Berry with our first pick.
Waters at C is interesting since he hasn’t played it in a long time. I am sure he could do it, just don’t know if Haley would be willing to move him. That still leaves a hole at RG — hopefully Ndukwe can fill that spot and I really like Ryan O’Callaghan at RT.

I like what Babb suggest
I’ve been saying Waters to Center since Peterson ran Weigman off to the donks.
by JohnNdallas on Nov 5, 2009 3:54 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Almost as bad
As Pioli running Pollard off to the Texans
OHANA!
by darwithabar on Nov 5, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Weigman would be an upgrade over Rudy
but he really wasn’t cut out for the run straight ahead Herm ball we were playing. Casey is one of the best pulling Cs ever, but he was getting pushed around some in the power run game. The Denver system is perfect for him.
It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

And the Chiefs are zone-blocking...
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
by hmills110 on Nov 5, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So does Denver
We need to get a C that can fill in for years though. Weigmann is up there in age.

I guess he would draft a LT in round 2?
Don’t see a lot of premier LT’s in round 2 as opposed to round 1. Nice to have a kid that is versitle enough to play either T or G though. I think more will be done in free agency than just a RG though. That will change the draft a lot.
I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

If we NEED a tackle, FA or go for a franchise-type talent in the draft.
It’s SO easy to get a 2nd-best prospect at tackle that’s worse than not doing anything. I don’t want to see another 1st-3rd round tackle, chosen for up-side, who gets thrown onto the field, and makes me cringe on every replay. So as a general proposition, I get a twinge when I hear “tackle” and “2nd-round” in the same sentence, unless it’s a right tackle, and it happens to be a deep class.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
by hmills110 on Nov 5, 2009 7:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
depends on your definition of premier...
do you think there is a premier of anything in round 2 as opposed to 1? There should be about 3 2nd round offensive tackles/guards… and we have 2 picks.
I’m definitely fine with getting some FA help instead of drafting but if there aren’t some deals done then draft!

Size up the draft, pursue FAs early in positions of draft weakness.
Size up FA. Skim the cream off the top. Emphasize other positions in the draft.
Repeat.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Same as any good GM does
it’s great that the BAD GM’s will be picking in front or around us.
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09
And Succop will be the Key in two of them.

yeh weigman would be nice to have now
but i think regardless we need 3 new lineman, whether that be free agency or the draft, hopefully we can get 2 in free agency and one in the draft

Tough call.
Might see one or more Ndukwe, Richardson, O’Callaghan, Brown, Alleman emerge. Chiefs are definitely going to start the next offseason with a few more/better options than last year. Hard to say if Waters comes back at all, though.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

At this point I could care less
as long as they add a couple big time upgrades.

Ugh... NO LEFT TACKLE IN ROUND 1!
Ugh… You don’t draft for need in round 1. You draft Best Player Available. And sorry, but drafting Okung to move Albert to LG is basically minorly upgrading at LT (maybe) and upgrading a lot at LG. You’re basically using a top 5 pick and $60M+ on a Guard.
Added on to that, the biggest areas of need on the o-line are in the middle. And you can get cream-of-the-crop Guards and Centers (arguably RTs too) in the 2nd and 3rd round.
Finally, if Branden Albert can become a very good LT, then we screwed up big time if we give up on him. He’s learning to play in a new blocking scheme at a new weight. He has a very high learning curve right now. If we already have an answer, then it’s a huge waste to draft for a guy in the same position.
Moral of the story? Okung is probably not going to be BPA when we draft. We can upgrade around him without a top 5 pick. And we might have the right guy at LT anyway.

honestly, I'm with you.
I’ve been praying for Berry in the 1st, C/G in the 2nd/3rd/4th… and MAYBE an OT that slides into the 2nd…
But, I thought it was interesting that Babb mentioned what a lot of APers have been talking about… moving Albert and Waters

but, I was just talking about OL…

We are going to have 8 picks out of the top 160 players.
We better find some good O-line in the top 160 College players

moving waters to center is a bad move! he is old and has never played the position in the nfl. he is on the decline and moving to center takes time. calling the protections, shotgun snaps…
lets wait with the draft talk till after the season. we dont know where we draft and there is so much movement on the draft boards (injuries, off the field issues…)
by pmwz on Nov 5, 2009 4:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Waters played center
He played center at first after he converted from TE. The whole speculation about Waters moving to center is centereted around the fact that he HAS played the position before.
I don’t think it would be a “bad” move but I don’t really see it happening either unless the Pats don’t re-sign Logan Mankins — which they will.
by Nick Britt on Nov 5, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually his first starts as a Chief were ar center and he played it well...
…he was an injury fill-in and but another injury forced him to move to left guard and he has been there ever since.
The more I see the more I think Okung is not a better player then Albert at LT.
by FrankPitts on Nov 5, 2009 9:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
as far as making the calls from the Center position
he has been right next to the Center his whole NFL career. He sees the same thing s as the Center ans hears all the calls. This should not be any problem at all. Waters seems to be a smart man anyway.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I like Babb's idea better (who DIDN'T propose moving Albert)
To move Albert you would need a LT, not easy to find. And as he states later, in a separate thought, if HE was running the show he would take the top Safety, then the best available OL in Rd 2. None of these is a replacement left tackle.

Okung * Albert * Waters * Ndukwe (or FA) * O'Callaghan
This is the original lineup that I was wanting.
I believe that you(stag) was discussing with me that Okung isn’t an upgrade at LT.
These are guys that I wouldn’t mind having during draft time. Russell Okung, Cirron Black, Mike Johnson, Joseph Barksdale or Bruce Campbell leading the army of darkness. One or two of these guys would help our offensive line tremendously
