Larry Johnson Should Become The Chiefs All Time Rushing Leader
Larry Johnson should be allowed to gain the all time Chiefs rushing record.
There are a few big reasons for this:
- The Chiefs rushing record is not impressive in NFL terms
- The Chiefs have the best chance at winning with Larry Johnson playing RB
- And subsequently, another record is at stake; the Chiefs have not had a #1 draft pick. Ever
Yes, Larry Johnson has had many off field issues the past few years. Yes, Larry Johnson went out and started bashing fans on Twitter. Yes, Larry Johnson has not played well this season. All of these things are not going to be forgotten by Chiefs fans any time soon. I personally don't want to see LJ on our team next year, but that doesn't change the fact that the best thing for the Chiefs to do is let him continue running the ball this year.
After the jump, I address how the Chiefs rushing record compares in the NFL, why LJ is our best option, and more.
First, there are 5 teams that have lower rushing records than Kansas City. Here are the teams that have a lower record:
New England Patriots (5,453 Yards)
Houston Texans (3,195 Yards)
Carolina Panthers (2,530 Yards)
New Orleans Saints (5,678 Yards)
Tampa Bay Bucs (5,957 Yards)
The Chiefs rushing record is greater than 2 teams founded within the last 15 years, and only 3 teams with similar length of history as the Chiefs. That means that the Chiefs rushing record is lower than Baltimore and Jacksonville, two teams in the league about 10 years. Pretty amazing when you consider how long the Chiefs have been in the NFL. It would be different in Larry Johnson were about to break the record of a Hall of Fame or Future Hall of Fame player, but I don't think Priest Holmes fits that bill.
What does the record really mean? Priest will still have the rushing TD records. Most of the passing and receiving records are owned by Len Dawson and Tony Gonzales, respectively. Those are two of Chiefs fans all time favorite players. You can say Holmes is also on that list, and I would agree, but probably somewhere in the 5-10 range. Just because we like Priest Holmes better as a person, he should be allowed to keep the record by default though?
By the way, this is a record that is very breakable by another running back in the future, just probably not one on our current roster.
Second, the Chiefs have the best chance at winning with Larry Johnson as the main running back. I know many people do not agree with this statement, but who would the Chiefs use instead?
Jamaal Charles - I like Charles, and his current YPC looks sexy, but I don't think that tells the whole picture. He's used primarily as our 3rd down running back, correct? Now, I don't have the stats to prove this, but from watching the game it seems like we run a lot of draw plays on 3rd down and long. On these runs, Charles usually gets 5-6 yards on these runs but not a first down. These kind of runs bump his YPC up, leading us to think he is more effective than he really is. Plus, he is not built to be a 20-25 carry running back that can play 16 games a season.
Kolby Smith - Kolby has had a few big games in his career, mostly when LJ was injured. But I can't really remember him being especially effective that season or any time since. Plus, we still had a good offensive line at that time. I just don't think he is good enough to be a main running back in the NFL. His injury also leaves a big question mark in how well he will be able to run the ball this year, or the rest of his career for that matter.
Dantrell Savage - Hasn't seen much playing time in season to really judge how well he'll run the ball in the NFL, but I suppose he did alright in the preseason.
Larry Johnson's 2.7 Yards Per Carry is horrible. However, we have also faced several teams within the top 15 run defenses in the league. Not to mention one of the worst offensive lines in the league. This topic has been covered extensively elsewhere, so I'll just stop here at saying the line is a big factor in LJ's season. Add on to all of this some questionable play calling, and you get a scenario that any running back in the league would have troubles gaining yards.
Even at 2.7 Yards Per Carry, Larry Johnson is still the best option the Chief's have at running back. LJ did fairly well the last two games before the bye, and hopefully he can continue improving. As Herm likes to say, "You play to win the game," and LJ gives us the best chance at that occurring.
Third, the Chiefs have never had a #1 draft pick. This in its self is not really that important. However, I like the thought that the Chiefs have never been the worst team in the NFL in any given season (according to their record). I would like to continue that streak by winning a few more games this year. If LJ is the best shot we have at accomplishing that, he should be allowed to continue running the ball.
In summary, I really don't see what the big difference is between Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes holding the record. It's not as if LJ becoming the all time Chiefs rushing leader means that Chiefs fans condone slapping women and using gay slurs. It's just a statistical record held by one of the best running backs to ever play for the Chiefs, who has had many off field issues. A record that is very breakable by a future running back, but hopefully a running back that Chiefs fans love just as much as other players in their long history.

I really don’t see what the big difference is between Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes holding the record. It’s not as if LJ becoming the all time Chiefs rushing leader means that Chiefs fans condone slapping women and using gay slurs.
But it does mean the fans root for an organization that continues to play a woman slapping, homophobic piece of garbage. Some fans would much rather have a guy like Priest represent the Chiefs than Larry.
Also Larry is historically bad rushing the ball this year so I think continuing to run him gives us the best chance to LOSE, not win, thus your entire argument is wrong.

Priest who got hurt and left the team?
Dude, packed his bags and hightailed it to Texas..during the season.

He was excused by the team...
Any player that has a season ending injury as serious as Priest’s was goes home. Fail Elway, Thats right, You are Elway.
OHANA!
Priest really didn't like KC...
Predictions for 2009:
LJ breaks Chiefs all time rushing record at home
Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.
The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays
Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for
Chiefs 6-10
Who said he liked KC?
KC liked him.

If Priest Holmes did not like KC...
Than why did he sign with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2001. It was not like he was traded. He came here by his own free will.

The Record holder
for not just this record but all records are seen as representatives of their team, or even nations. The problem with LJ holding any record is we the fans do not want him or anyone like him holding records for this team. Years back when the record is about to be broken again there will be look backs like we do for Priest now, none of want to look back at such a self centered, disrespecting person and see him as a representative for the Chiefs. I did read your post and tried to see things from your point, but when it all comes down to it, we do not want LJ to hold this record.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?
I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!
Are records more important than wins?
Hell no! I bet you ask all NFL coaches this question and they will agree. If Haley believes LJ gives the Chiefs the best option to win, LJ will play again. Players are just pieces used to get a win.

The nice thing about this situation is...
that benching LJ gives us a better chance to win games, AND it keep the record safe. It is a win/win all the way around the board. Not sure what we are arguing about.

Agree
LJ has been horrible this year and deserves to be benched on play alone. He does NOT give us the best chance to win.
If Charles and Smith or who ever else come out and have a big game this week it could make this all a mute point.
Good game this week and Johnson could be sent down the bench where he may only get a hand full of carries. If they can’t do the job this weekend then Johnson will probably be back front and center. This is the week where players have to steo up and show what they are made of both running and blocking.
We don't want a 1# pick
You don’t want a 1# pick because you will have to over pay someone who will never live up to the hype. You are much better staying out of the top 5 picks if possible.
Let's give him ...
While we are at it … let’s give him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Because
the other guys don’t force the D to play the run

Not sure how that can be proven
Seems like opinion…if this was 2 years ago, I would agree with you. Larry Johnson doesn’t really change any game plan in 2009, except maybe when he is in the game, the defense can drop 8 to play the pass. Sorry not buying it.
If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

By not allowing him to break the record,
it sends a message that his behavior is noticed and not condoned. Sure, breaking the record isn’t a “huge” milestone, but by not allowing him to break it sends a much bigger message to everyone.
As far as a guy with a 2.7 yard average giving us the best chance to win….please. Lay down Larry has every soft spot on the field identified. Many backs in the league have excelled with little to zero blocking. LJ was a “good” back because he once ran behind a “great” OL. It is becoming obvious how average he was. You can’t convince me that having Kolby Smith or Jamaal Charles in the backfield will make us a worse team.
I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...
Great stuff...
about identifying the soft spots on the field. lol.

I will say this
LJ is going to break the record in week 9 or 10 whether we like it or not (and for the record I don’t)
But the upside to this post is that it is true that our rushing title is relatively low. LJ has only been the starter for a few years now and granted he had two very nice seasons, but hes already at the record?
If we ever drafted a top talent RB and some better blockers, it would be a question of IF not WHEN that guy would break LJs record
A man who says he can, and a man who says he can't are both right. Which one are you?
Larry Johnson should become ... INVISIBLE
totally and completely … on the bench, banned from the sidelines, the field, the stadium … he is the worst running back in the league at the moment (and has been all year long) … 2.7 YPC and ZERO TDs … he is THE WORST option the Chiefs have as RB, and THE WORST to represent our team and community
and has been proven already this season: he gives us NO chance to win … the O-Line could open a hole the size of Connecticut and Larry Johnson wouldn’t recognize it from the side of a barn, much less be able to hit it and run thru it … he’s lost 2-3 steps, as well as any desire to compete, on top of any desire to remain in Kansas City
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
Correction
I did find something we can agree on.

LJ never was that good
Our O-Line was great when he had his big year other than that as soon as teams figured out all you have to do to stop him is force the run left because Larry ALWAYS carries the ball in his right arm and is NO good running LEFT never has been he did ALRIGHT that direction ONLY when Roaf was plowing the road for him. At best LJ in his prime was maybe the 10th best back in the league playing behind one of the best lines ever. Also I never even liked him at Penn State I thought he was another sure BUST even with his good years there are many backs I would of rather had during his prime.
correct me if I am wrong...
But didn’t all of Priest’s success happen behind that great line? Didn’t LJ have a huge chunk of yards after Roaf retired and Shields was a shell of his former self?

maybe you're right
we should say the heck with it and just move on if he breaks it or he doesnt. its just a team record and i dont want him to break it, but he has earned the yards he has gained, and someday someone will erase it themselves. however…if this season is such a throw away, and he wont be with the team next year anyway, then why let him get it? why not see what the other guuys can do and have more of an idea for next year, the draft, etc. I dunno…tough call. As I get older I learn that forgiveness is imperative in life so part of me wants him to stand on the sideline the rest of the year, and the other part says to heck with it, its just a record, not wins and losses which is all that matters in this league.
If LJ Breaks the Record
He better hope it’s during a “road game”…
I think it would be the season highlight for me as a season ticket holder, to boo in unison with every other Chiefs fan at Arrowhead. That would be too friggin funny!
I’ve noticed the number of fans wearing LJ jerseys has decreased dramatically over the last 1.5 seasons at Arrowhead. Any time I see a kid wearing an LJ jersey, I make it a point to ask the parent why they would allow their kid to wear it. Mom’s don’t like hearing that letting your kid wear an LJ jersey is as good as approving of men beating up women.
I was done w/ LJ last year, anything that’s happened this year is just a big “yawn”….
Haley has the guts to bench him the rest of the year, when he comes off suspension, hope he follows through, and does it!
LJ isn’t worth the disk space used to store these posts!
You have to admit ...
If the Chiefs were winning very few of us would be discussing this or the signs in the hallway. We would be talking about football.
The stuff with LJ would not have happened either...
So there would be no reason to question his character because he would still appear to be a changed man instead of a phony.
