Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

So, just my opinion and all, but I'm starting to think that safety has become the Chiefs' No. 1 offseason need.

I still think they need to address OL, whether in free agency or the draft, but this safety situation is bleak.

What's worse is that myself and others were duped into thinking it was some kind of position of strength. It needs a complete overhaul.

Knowing that now, perhaps you'll understand why, ignoring free agency for a moment, I'd draft 1. Safety, 2a. OL, 2b. OL.

Glad to see I did KB's job a month or so ago...

SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY.

This isn't a "kum-bye-yah" campfire! THIS IS FOOTBALL!

agreed

Number 1 draftable need: Playmaking Safety (Berry)
Number 2 draftable need: STARTING Center and/or RG
Number 3 draftable need: Pass rushing OLB (Norwood)
Number 4 draftable need: BLOCKING TE (or one that can block AND catch!)

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

Good call Stag on the pass rush OLB

Forgot about that one. That probably needs to be inserted to #2 on my list.

You don’t need a pro bowl safety if you have a guy that is pressuring the QB.

Though I strongly disagree with Safety being the #1 need. Thats not even on my list.

Safety the #1 need of the team? REALLY?

I think its a bunch of people in love with Berry and Mayes saying that, not logically analyzing the teams needs.

Safety cannot possibly be the #1 need on a team that has won seven games in three years and is near the bottom in the league in both offense and defense.

I would rank the needs as:

  • Interior Offensive Line
  • Right Tackle, we will have to see how O’Callaghan does the rest of the year
  • Running Back – with LJ gone, we don’t have a reliable every down back. Charles is good, but cannot carry the kind of load Haley seems to want.
  • Linebacker – Key position in the 3-4 defense and all of our Inside LBs are below average.
  • Tight Ends – Since apparently none of them on the team know how to block.

Come on. Safety? REALLY? Yes we need to upgrade the position. It was a huge mistake for Pioli to let Pollard go. But can anybody here HONESTLY tell me that if they were not in love with Berry and Mayes that they would think Safety was a major need?

honestly, even if Berry wasn't in the draft...

I’d say Safety IS a TOP need!

Look at the BIG plays that have cost the Chiefs games all year long…

CBs get beat from time to time… but Safeties are supposed to be there to make plays…
the Chiefs FS have rarely ever been in position… they have missed tackles, NOT gotten picks or passes defended…

With a playmaker at Safety, KC is 3-4 at this point, IMO.

I like Page, but he’s out of position a lot, and isn’t great in coverage…

The Chiefs secondary problems are due to the lack of pass rush in my opinion

It doesn’t matter who you have back there, they can’t cover forever. If the QBs are getting all day to throw, they’ll find somebody.

Yes our Safetys are below average and need to be addressed. But the contribution that position makes pales in comparison to our other needs in my opinion.

pass rush had nothing to do with that Miles Austin play, or the other MIles Austin play

those were quick passes, where the CB missed the attempt at knocking the ball away, and the Safety took a bad angle, and wasn’t there to clean up or tackle.

The contribution made by a TOP safety makes ALL the difference:
Bob Sanders, Ed Reed, Troy P….. and yes, Brian Dawkins

those guys change the entire defenses they play on.
that’s what KC needs more than anything on the defensive side of the ball, IMO

Pollamalu and Sanders and Ed Reed get beat too

Lets not go crazy here and think that one guy is going to stop everything. Big plays happen in the NFL sometimes no matter who is back there.

I just think a high 1st round pick on a Safety is a luxury for well established and talented teams. Like how San Diego could splurge a 1st round pick on a Nickel CB. Its frosting.

We need to build the foundation first. Otherwise even if we have a great Safety back there he isn’t going to live up to his potential without the pieces around him. Again, Safetys benefit from pass rushers (Terrel Suggs for Ed Reed, Dwight Freeny for Bob Sanders, Harrison for Pollamalu, etc)

And please note Stag

That I have nothing against Berry.

I’m just speaking philisophically, with all the needs this team has, Safety is the last position I see making a huge impact in turning the team around.

see above :)

a playmaker back there would make all the difference for the defense, IMO.

give me a playmaker at FS, and two new starters on the OL…

you could (I’m not recommending this, but just making a point) keep the rest of the team the exact same, and they’d be MUCH better, IMO.
