November 2009 Scott Pioli Approval Poll
I genuinely love it when it's approval poll time. I think it's really interesting seeing the poll results roll in and especially interesting to read what thoughts you guys put in the comments. I don't really see any other franchise or NFL blog taking a monthly pulse of how the fans feel, which makes it extra cool.
Today, we're talking about Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli. Head coach Todd Haley is hurting in his latest approval poll. Will Pioli do better?
Here are some of the stories Scott Pioli has been involved in over the last month, with the NFL trade deadline in mid October probably being your biggest referendum on Pioli.
Last month, Pioli dropped to a 70% approval rating, his lowest since we started the polls. Pioli's approval rating was at 77% right after the draft.
Make sure you vote in the poll below and check out previous month's results after the jump.
October 2009: 70%
September 2009: 82%
August 2009: 91%
July 2009: 90%
June 2009: 76%
May 2009: 77%
April 2009: 89%
March 2009: 85%
February 2009: 88%

Honestly?
I haven’t approved of much he’s done.
He’s got a good track record and I’ve got patience, but this hasn’t been a banner first year on personel decisions.

really
what free agents are there that will make an impact right now? given the O line situation, the Dline situation and a very problematic RB who needs to jus be cut

Jason Brown, C who went to the Rams....
That would have helped.

I agree there wasn't much in Free agency
But I didn’t like the TG trade, I didn’t like the draft, I didn’t like the premature Cassel contract, and I didn’t like completely ignoring the O-Line.
Again, this is just my opinion.

TG has a few good years left if that
cassel has been about as effective as he can be under the circumstances, and by developing the d line first, since they take the longest to develop, if done right both your o-line and d-line hit their stride together making for a very secure foundation.
by Leaf on Nov 5, 2009 11:09 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
TG is a beast and will play at least 2 years beyond this
Trading him hurts the team. People can now focus on shutting down DBowe and are passing game is done. In the past having 88 took some pressure off the other recievers and opened up the running game. I don’t want to get in this debate, its just my opinion.

just becasue TG is playing well this year does not mean that
he will next year. he’s getting old. eventually it’s going to catch up to him. plus he wanted out. we did him a favor for all his years of service and maximized his value as the older he gets the less valuable he gets.
by Leaf on Nov 5, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
they did not
get maximum value for Tony G sorry they just didnt, pioli did drop the ball on that one, and i do agree the trade really stung the offense and the fan base, and the draft did suck, another d line wtf?

oh yah?
from what i recall carl tried to give him away, and could get nothing but a 3rd. sounds to me like we got a really good deal to me. what team would give more than a 2nd for a 30yr old star. yah TG is a future HoFer but that doesn’t mean that it’s not risky to take him. anytime you take a player, regardless of how good they are, over 30yrs old is a risk as any game could potentially be their last.

i'm not talking about the team
i’m talking about pioli’s job. some of the players he picked up didn’t pan out but then cinsidering the options he had at the time i think he was hoping they would work but they didn’t. but as for his draft picks it’s way to early to tell and that was my point
by Leaf on Nov 5, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
the team
has not executed well at all, this entire season. you cant blame pioli on how a player plays, thats coaching and the players fault, the poll really shouldnt be Pioli approval rating it should be a Haley thing, and honestly you cant totally put the blame on haley either its a new system in place for the entire team.

well we already did the haley thing
so it’s not like we aren’t critiqueing him as well, all i’m saying is critique pioli for his job and at this point i thinks it’s too early to tell if his brough in any real talent. i’m not saying approve of his job, cus i don’t. but that’s what the not sure yet option is for. there’s just way to much negitivity surounding this team.

I disapprove
Mainly on the fact that at this point I’m seeing only 1 draft pick contributing on the field (a kicker), and that Pioli made a colossal mistake in not improving the offensive line in the offseason.

this is his first year
cut some slack, there are alot of bad contracts on this team, and we dont realy know the inner workings of every contract, im sorry but peterson and edwards left this team in shambles i will be more worried if this continues into year 2 and 3 without any progress

Every team has 1st year contracts on the books. Those three contracts didn't tie Piolis hands when it came to free agnents.

btw
I really think the NFL needs to cap rookie salaries, but other then that the chiefs are like the royals a city in the middle of no where really, and would have to overpay for good players

defensive players usually take a year or two to become what you expect, maybe longer
offensive players can step in almost right away.
Hence, focusing on defense FIRST. then you have a complete team playing together and peaking about the same time.

i think you are being a little unfair to pioli
back in april the 2 worse holes on the team were the o-line and the entire defense. the chiefs went defense, and while the pick was a little iffy in some minds, the thought process behind it wasn’t because we all thought the defense was probably a little worse than the o-line at the time. while we knew the o-line was bad, no one thought they would be this bad. when we picked up goff and a few other scrubs for the o-line, most thought that it would at least get us by for a year. but now that we see that isn’t the case all of a sudden pioli should have known better then to make a colossal mistake like that. it’s not fair, not to mention a little hipocritical since back in april 90% of us proably would have made a simular move, to judge him based on the way the team is now. you can’t build rome in one night. there was no way that pioli could have fixed every single hole this team had in 7 months.

and if the D looked better than LY
there would be less heat about that approach. That is not the case. The D looks like there was no change from game 16 LY to game 1 of this year.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Nov 5, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
The only games the Defense looked even serviceable was the Washington and Oakland games…and those teams don’t have offenses. That SD first half looked like it was 11 against 7.

I don't agree with that Craig/NJCF
The D looks MUCH better than last season as a whole, the problem, in my mind has been that the secondary hasn’t seemed to have progressed the way most thought it would have. That’s been the biggest disappointment to me. But the front seven is way way better than last season.

30th in total D
31st in Sacks and 26th in Rushing D
Not something to be proud of.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Nov 5, 2009 12:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
who said anything about being proud of it?
all we are saying is it’s better. yes this year we are one of the worst in the league. last year, in case you don’t remember we were one of the worst in NFL history.
by Leaf on Nov 5, 2009 1:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
LY
31st in total, 32nd in sacks, and 30 in rushing D.
I would not say we are MUCH better than last year. We were so decimated at LB due to injuries all of LY, that some improvement this year was inevitable IMO.

That at the end of the season
or 7 games in?
by JohnNdallas on Nov 5, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
This D is better
Total Yrds allowed through 7 games in 08, 2833. In 09, 2682.
Passing in 08, 1455. In 09, 1765. That’s 310 yrds more through 7 games than last season. As I suggested earlier, we are giving up bigger plays against the pass.
Here’s the killer to your ranking states (that I’ll bet, was from the end of last season) and the #’s to support my argument that the front 7 is MUCH better….
Rush Yards Allowed through 7 games in 08, 1378. This season, 917, That’s 461 yrds less! Or 65.8 yrds less per game so far.
Even in Pts allowed, this team is better. In 08 Chiefs allowed 193 pts scored through 7 games. In 09, 181.
It’s Better!

as i said eariler and llSatNtll said just above me
it takes longer for the d to develop. plus i think the defense is better. it still absloutely blows but it’s better then last year. we got no pressure on the QB last year but we are 1000 times better at that this year. yah we still give up 50 billion yards and points a game but as i said they are better, but they still suck.
by Leaf on Nov 5, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
OK, but..
We had the most cap space to work with and somehow we come out of free agency without a single real difference maker?
The approval poll is for right now, so I voted based on how I feel that he has done up to this point. I have no problem changing my mind later on if things get better, but as of right now we’ve only had 1 draft pick that has played well and very few free agents who have made a difference. That is all the information I have to go by right now.

it's not always about money
sure you listen to guys like LJ and you think that’s what it’s all about for these guys. it’s not. i’m not saying it doesn’t play the part, but some might be leery to be a part of a rebuilding as it takes awhile to accomplish. some might not want to play for a coach that hasn’t proven himself yet. there are a million and one reasons why a player might not want to play in KC, but just because we got no one doesn’t mean pioli didn’t try and i think everyone forgets that. if we don’t wake up and see the big headline that we signed some big name player to a big contract we think that pioli must not be doing his job right.
by Leaf on Nov 5, 2009 1:41 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I gave a disapproval this time
I’m having a real problem with the lack of activity in free agency during the off season. I don’t see how you watch tape on the O-Line from last season, and decide all ya need to do is bring in two cast offs (Gutcheck and Goff).
Now, I have a theory, that maybe Hunts been on an ummm corporate adjustment in expenditures the last 2 maybe 3 years, and that’s the reason for the bargain basement FA signings. Just a notion but it makes some sense, when all things considered.
If nothing else, it sounds better than the alternative, That Pioli and or Haley are that poor of evaluators of talent!
by JohnNdallas on Nov 5, 2009 10:23 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
It is becoming harder to approve of anything the Chiefs have done.
I didn’t expect to be in the playoffs but I also didn’t think we would look as bad as we have. All we can do is hope that the second half of the season will show us that the moves they have made will start to pay off.
Chiefs set an NFL record, most roster changes in 1 season.

Tough Call this time Around...
Overall I approve mostly because I want to be optimistic. What I don’t care for is the merry-go-round of players. While trying to find the “right 53” Cassel can’t get the same line two weeks in a row, not to say that would help, but I think it;s hard to do your job when you don’t know what the people around you or what they think their job and your job is.
The first half of the season was hard, we all knew it was a brutal way to start the season, even if we were a better team. I think the second half of the season will say a lot more, I am hoping these are just growing pains, but I guess we have to wait and see.

too early
to tell on Pioli. I can’t say that he’s done anything that has me excited yet. I mean…like…nothing..really…nothing.
I’m hoping he makes me a believer in something next season..cause this one isn’t getting better.

you guys
There are signs of progress. You have to look outside the numbers and stats. Jackson is a rookie at a position which usually takes 3 years to fully develop unless you are Julius Peppers or Demarcus Ware, he has been ok. Dorsey is significantly improved from last year and actually making plays here and there. Hali is looking like the guy he was at PSU. The point is that this is a process. The NFL is a parity driven league, but Carl and Herm left a mess for Pioli and Haley. There is no way anyone can be upset at this point. At the bye, optimists were saying 2-5, realists were saying 1-6. In reality, this team was very close to being 4-3. Matt Cassel is not a bust. In fact, I think he has great potential. I doubt that Thigbone or Brodie could have led the last minute marches against Dallas or Oakland. This team will win. When that will come to fruition is the important question.
