The murkier question relates to the team's ability to deactivate Johnson on game days. But while, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported over the weekend, the NFLPA is ready to file another grievance if Johnson isn't returned to the starting lineup, a league source tells us that Johnson and his agent currently are prepared to accept any decision to deactivate Johnson.

"There's nothing they can do," the source said. "It's the coach's decision."

A decision to deactivate Johnson would entail more than Johnson standing in street clothes (or, in the case of Jevon Kearse, leaving the stadium). Johnson has a per-game roster bonus that pays him more than $60,000 per game, but only if he is on the active game-day roster. If he is deactivated, he loses that money.

Or they have common sense and realize Charles is only good for 10 carries a game.

If this team gives a shit about winning they’ll stick with the plan and keep feeding LJ. If they care more about some bullshit image with a bunch of blog posting yahoos who, for the most part, DON’T pay for season tickets, they’ll consider benching him.

Its not about having balls, its about winning games.

And before someone cites his YPC

We’re all so fucking quick to cite the lack of oline when defending Cassel, rightfully so. Yet we conveniently ignore it when looking at LJ. Use a common frame of reference, not one that fits your poorly thought out, emotionally drive agenda. Bunch of fucking amateurs I tell ya.

i agree 100% man

O-line is the source of both passing nd rushing suckitude this year. LJ may not be the back he was a few yaers ago, but he is the best back on the team, and they need to find a way to get him in space, not hit at or behind the line every carry.

Is it safe to say that LJ has reached his peak though? History is not in his favor.

yeah he pretty much has

but his skill level is still high, just not showing right now with this line.

And that's the thing. MAYbe the money matters a lot, but

it can’t be said that they’re doin’ him many favors feedin’ ‘im the ball under the circumstances he’s been facing. It’s all kinda funny.

On to McGraw’s sitch…

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Re: O-line problems

I agree to some level. However, there have also been tons of instances where LJ gets stuffed because he hits the wrong hole. That’s a problem in a zone blocking scheme, where he needs to find the right hole to attack.

Priest Holmes wasn’t big or fast. His strength was that he could see a hole develop from a mile away. LJ doesn’t have that field vision. You have to give LJ a clean hole and then get him to the second level. That’s why I’m especially curious to see what a Kolby Smith or Jamaal Charles can do with more carries. I have a feeling there will be a chance that either one of those guys fares much better simply because they play smarter.

Who cares if Charles is a 20 carries per game RB...

LJ is not getting the job done. Charles probably is not a 20 carries per game RB, but that is why you give 10 carries to Kolby Smith, and 15 to Jamaal Charles. The fact is Charles has the speed and ability to get YPC behind this o-line than Johnson does. LJ is a washed up has been. It time to see rather we can find a diamond in rough starter in the Charles/Savage/Smith trio. It was not like we were going to all of a sudden become a playoff contender for 2009. Time to see what wer have for 2010, and LJ is not in those plans.

Didn’t they say Priest Holmes couldn’t be a feature back?

by Nick Britt on Nov 4, 2009 10:32 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Don't know

Am not old enough to remember. Basically I am throwing my support toward Charles starting. My point was who cares if Charles is a feature back? Let the guy start. If he can hold his own; give him the majority of carries. However, if he is not, than split the carries with Smith/Savage. Even if Charles can be a feature back; not we want him to be one. Being that a RBs career seems to go downhill after around 2,000 carries, or something like that. Charles would be able to enjoy a longer career if he had someone to split the carries with him.

by ChiefsFan90s on Nov 4, 2009 10:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah let him start, take 20 carries a game..

get injured now and ruin any potential he may have in 2010 and beyond. This team is going to do shit this year, let LJ take the hits.

He isn't a QB

Running backs take hits. He carried the load in college. It is not like the guy has never taken a hit.

He needs more experience on first and second down to hone his skills as a complete back. He deserves a chance and you disproved your own point. We aren’t going anywhere this year, so why not give the kid a shot and see what he can do? You can’t get much worse than 2.7 YPC.

Taking hits in the no D Big12 doesn't equate to the NFL.

He’s small. There’s a reason they call them scat backs. In the long run they play like shit and can’t hold up. Ask Leon Washington. Every down backs are build like Thomas Jones, or Ced Benson, or Frank Gore (who even with his size gets hurt). Charles will always be a second option. K Smith isn’t an option, he can’t even stay healthy in practice.

My point was...

Yes they did say Priest couldn’t carry the load as a feature back. He proved people wrong. Don’t get me wrong, Priest had exceptional skills both physically and mentally that few will ever be able to match. He was a master at reading blocks and his athleticism was ridiculous.

But the same thing has been said about many undersized backs, and yet the facts really aren’t there to back it up. Look at small guys like Brian Westbrook, Barry Sanders, Darren Sproles, Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, Warrick Dunn, etc. Sure JC isn’t even close to up there yet, but he needs to get the opportunity to reach that point.

maybe

it is because charles has averaged 5 ypc on that pathetic line, and isn’t larry’s age. and maybe, it is because larry’s numbers go down each year.

in my mind, it isn’t an issue of will they deactivate him/ sit him, but do they have the right to?

i believe they do. i don’t believe the NFLPA has a case to argue. his numbers don’t lie, the NFLPA can’t tell the chiefs they have to play him.

Where’s the NFLPA telling the titans that they have to play Collins at QB instead of Young?

Oh Yeah

We’ve won sooooo many games with him. Give me a break, LJ could give a shit about this team and you’d have to blind to not see this. There’s plenty of losing teams in the NFL but it’s the few classless idiots that question the coach and turn everything into a “me” issue. He should of been cut before the season started. Last time I checked almost seven thousand fans signed this petition so that should stand for something. I DON’T pay for season tickets but I live 500 miles away and spend quite a few thousand dollars to come to Arrowhead several times a year to support this team. This guy has never about about CHIEFS and doesn’t deserve the honor to be here.

I guess

if the defintion of incoherent rambling is someone who disagrees with you, then you must be right. You stated it’s about winning—we haven’t really won with him have we? My point was I’m sure there are quite a few fans that agree LJ should sit even though we’re all not season ticket holders, like that should even matter. I for one dish out more than my fair share to support this garbage that has been displayed the last few years and don’t wish to waste time watching this asshole get tripped up after 1 and two yard carries. You made a comment, I responded to it, if you can’t figure out my point maybe you should read a little slower, not that hard to figure out.

Sentence on lots of losses. Sentence stating LJ doesn’t care. Classless idiots. Should have been cut. Irrelevant internet petition. Don’t pay for tickets. LJ doens’t want to be a Chief, again.

Yeah that’s an incoherent ramble of a comment if I’ve seen one. All it needs is less punctuation and all caps and you’ll be on your way. I get what you’re saying in each sentence, just not how they accumulate other than you don’t like LJ.

At least

At least Charles has above average speed and gives us more flexibility. Really, his only visible problem has been fumbles and he seems to be doing better in that regard. Haley has already come out and said that he is the teams best blocker at RB. So if he is the fastest RB, best blocker, and best at catching the fotoball out of the backfield why isn’t he starting???

There has to be something more to it. Either Jamaal isn’t reading his blocks right, doesn’t know the playbook well enough, isn’t working hard enough in the weight room, dogging it at practice, etc. It has to be something the coaches are seeing that we aren’t seeing. Contrary to popular belief, Todd Haley and Mo Carthon are pretty good offensive coaches with a track record of success.

My point — unless JC has turned the corner, prepare for the return of LJ!

Scott Pioli is ready to make a deal. If the same number of people who sign that petition buy season tickets, LJ will get the axe. If not, the Chiefs will move on and pretend nothing happened.

Well in that case...

Sign Edgerrin James.

Probably won’t have much more production than Larry Johnson, but he at least has some agility and can do two things LJ cant: block and catch the football out of the backfield.

This is just wishful thing. I am 75% sure we won’t see any change in our offense from what it was before the LJ Twitter fiasco.

Edge is worse than LJ

especially with this line

by KCCheeze on Nov 4, 2009 10:23 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Respectfully disagree

Edge is a potential Hall of Famer and a much better teammate. I can give you 10 reasons why I would take Edge over LJ. Give me 5 why LJ is better.

by Nick Britt on Nov 4, 2009 10:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not saying

that LJ is better or worse..

But Edge is 31, hasnt averaged 4 yards per carry since 2005, and thus far, has averaged 2.7ypc on 46 attempts in Seattle. I have a hard time believing that Seattles OL is as bad or worse than the Chiefs. Edge would be a terrible addition.

Forget the FA’s. We’re a losing team. The most we can do by winning is edge ourselves closer to being outside of the Top 5 pick (which wouldnt really bother me). So why not put the young guys in? JC is capable of 10-15 carries a game. Apparently, some of us have forgotten that he carried the ball 18 times for 100+ yards last year against TB.

At the end of the 07 season, Smith ran the ball 31 times, 21, 13, 18, and 17 times in the final games.

Point is, you could divide up the carries between Smith and Charles. You can also throw Savage into the mix if needed.

They signed Damion McIntosh and he started at LT

Should say a lot about the state of Seattle’s O-Line

by Nick Britt on Nov 5, 2009 1:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Also

Small sample size on Edge. LJ has got nearly 100 more carries and he is still averaging only 2.7 as the feature back. I know Julius Jones is the primary back, so I am guessing Edge gets the ball in short situations, but I haven’t watched Seattle play this year. Again, you have to consider this things when evaluating running stats.

What I do know is that Edge can catch out of the backfield and pick up a blitz — two things LJ refuses to do. I also know he can read a running lane, which LJ has failed to do this year. Keep in mind, Edge is only 1 year older than LJ and has rushed for twice as many yards.

All I am saying is if we are looking for a proven complete back, Edge > LJ at this point. I do want Jamaal Charles to get his shot though, but you have to wonder why he wasn’t given his shot already. We will know a lot more about our RB situation after Sunday.

by Nick Britt on Nov 5, 2009 1:28 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

LJ

USED to have problems picking up the Blitz. LJ has really improved in that area this year. I could be wrong, but on passing downs that LJ has been in, I dont think hes surrendered a sack yet.

Edge is further downhill that LJ is. Edge took a BEATING in AZ for 3 years. His first 2 years in AZ, already nearing 30, he took about the same amount of carries as he was getting earlier in his career, yet his output was much lower. I know AZ didnt have a good OL and he was averaging close to 4 yards a carry, but my point is there was ALOT of wear and tear on him. Hes had close to double the amount of rushing attempts as LJ.

Edgerrin James hasnt even been a Carry-the-load back since 2007, hes 31 years old, and he barely has 500 receiving yards in the last 4 seasons.

You can say Edge was a more complete back than LJ at 1 point, but Edge is terrible now, hes been terrible for about 3 years now, his career is over and in no way, shape, or form would he ever be a starter on any team in the NFL.

by Petey14 on Nov 5, 2009 3:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Each position

is different. At this point, with Albert and Waters struggling, we dont have a single solid player on the OL, except MAYBE O’callaghan..but I havent seen enough to make that conclusion.

McIntosh is starting because Locklear is hurt. Spencer is solid at C when hes playing, Max Ungar was a good addition at RG and last I knew, he was playing fairly well. I dont know much about Sims (LG) or Willis (RT) but with a healthy Locklear, Spencer and Ungar, their line is far better off than ours is.

Seattle has 621 rushing yards, on 177 plays, a 3.5 average. They’ve also surrendered 18 sacks. The Chiefs has 709 rushing yards on 204 plays, also a 3.5 average BUT surrendered 27 sacks.

Julius Jones is getting the majority of the carries in Seattle and I’m pretty confident that Julius Jones would do better than LJ in KC if he were to come here. But NOT Edge.

by Petey14 on Nov 5, 2009 3:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

LJ is the ultimate Yo-Yo

One play he’ll look like the LJ of old and plow ahead for 4-5 yards, the next he sees that there isn’t a hole and just quits on the play. One minute he’s Mr. “Clean Slate” who is doing everything the coach asks, the next he is bashing the coach, the fans, and homosexuals online. There’s no point in keeping the guy around. Let’s at least see what we have in Charles, Smith, Savage, and Williams. If none of them are up to the job then at least we know that we need to look for someone new for next year. My final argument for Charles would be that he has the agility to cut back when the o-line doesn’t open the hole where it was suppose to. As opposed to LJ who is a straight ahead runner.

It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

by Bashman on Nov 4, 2009 11:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

LJ CAN cut back.. he just won't...

I have seen him cut back and bounce outside in the past and I really believe he can still do it. I was watching Michael Turner on Monday thinking “Why can’t LJ ever bounce outside like that.”

Part of the answer is the offensive line of course, but I haven’t seen him even TRY to bounce outside even 1 single time this season. There isn’t always room in the middle, good backs can make a side cut and try to bounce it outside. I’m not asking for a speed dash to the sideline, just a little side cut!

I know RBs are coached to not get flashy in the backfield, but with a line like we have we can’t have a RB that bull charges it up the middle every play.

by Lucasjr5 on Nov 4, 2009 11:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And..

And if we are truly switching to a zone blocking scheme (as has been rumored here), cutbacks are an essential part of a successful running game.

This whole RB situation really doesn’t add up for me.

Johnson and his agent are delusional

His stats are at the bottom of the league this year so how can he fight any de-activation? Big EGO, (EGO….TOONICON …FYI….U SUK) with E. James being cut the other day how can Lanny, sorry Larry Johnson file a greivence.. Larry has done less than E. James, S. Alexander, etc, and has a bigger EGO… Sorry Lance, no one in the organization owes you anything hope to never hear your name again…Priest Holmes #31, Walk 75 yds outside Arrowhead stadium and figure out what a record would have meant to you and the fans….

2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp

by Chiefs_KC on Nov 5, 2009 1:54 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

It's not Johnson and his agent you should worry about

According to the OP, THEY say it’s the coach’s decision. THEY say they won’t fight deactivation. It’s the union that concerns me.

I agree that it’s ridiculous to think that the union could (or should) second-guess an NFL head coach about who plays and who doesn’t. But the fact is that Johnson averaged 2.7 YPC for seven games, and still remained the starter. Furthermore, the two games prior to the bye were among Johnson’s better performances of the season – which I know isn’t saying a lot, but there it is. So if Johnson doesn’t return to that role after the suspension (whether by deactivation or a depth chart change) everybody’s going to know the decision isn’t based on his performance… UNLESS a Chiefs RB steps up against Jacksonville.

Without the suspension, the union wouldn’t give a rat’s patootie if Johnson gets demoted or not. But you can’t get around the fact that the suspension has happened.

Look at this from the union’s perspective – and remember… they don’t have Chiefs season tickets, or care one whit about who holds the Chiefs all-time rushing record. They already see this as an unprecedented penalty for an off the field issue. The last time a player received disciplinary action for something he said, the player was fined $10,000. Johnson will lose 30 times that amount of money from the suspension alone – and that’s after the union neogtiated it down to half what the team wanted. If he’s deactivated for the last eight games, he’ll lose another half a million bucks. The union has already fought the Chiefs over $300 grand. Why wouldn’t they fight for $500 grand?

Perhaps the union will recognize this is someplace they shouldn’t go. But I’m not counting on it. So I say again: let’s hope the Chiefs find someone else who can carry the rock this Sunday.

John

I can't believe there are still people saying LJ is our best running back.

Unreal. Charles already has proven statistically that he picks up more YPC than LJ does. Go back and watch every game this year again. Watch really really close. Notice Lj can’t break a single tackle. Now flip over and watch Chris Johnson and Rice from Baltimore.

Notice how they throw off 3 or 4 defenders and EARN yardage. That is a running backs job. It’s not just to run through holes all the time. It’s not about how good you can be if only no one tries to tackle you. For God sake’s people. Wake up. LJ is on pace to have the worst season EVER in the entire HISTORY of the NFL for a starting running back.

What the hell does it take for some of you to wake up to what’s in front of your face?? LJ can’t break a single tackle. He could get tackled by a cheerleader. He’d probably get up and beat her for it, but none the less I believe he would fall first. All you need to do is watch him. Now I can’t wait for the rebuttals to this comment.

Cause I know none of you LJ supporters have a single stat to point to. He is the worst running back in the NFL presently in every category and hasn’t scored a rushing TD all year. And you still think they need to find a way??!! Your delusional. If you think that then you deserve a 2-14 team every year, because that is what your content with.
Not me. I want a Priest Holmes back.

Not because he ran behind a better O line, but because he could break tackled all on his own without help. He did his job. Always. LJ is washed up and he sucks and he doesn’t care. Stop worshipping the guy. He’s a scumbag and he’s a liability. Good riddance.

they would argue...

that it is the oline’s fault without rebuttal for JC’s numbers.

if that’s all it was, i’m sure a bunch of teams would’ve offered a 7th-rounder for larry…. al davis and jerry jones are still owners in this league aren’t they??
