Chiefs Sign at Arrowhead Sends Loud and Clear Message
This sign was installed during the bye week and comes to us courtesy of Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com.
Could the message to Larry Johnson be any louder?
I know this sign is the same message that has been pushed throughout the Todd Haley/Scott Pioli era but it holds even more weight now. And it's interesting to note that this photo came from the Chiefs.
Was this a coincidence that this is the sign that will greet LJ when he returns to the complex on November 9th?

Here's what I think it means, and why it scares me
It smacks of desperation from a coaching staff that may be losing its team. Not addressing the team like men, and instead leaving passive aggressive notes. This is not a good sign, and not a good way to lead.
by just a guy on Nov 5, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Passive aggression is not the kind of aggression that wins ball games. Do you think that the other team’s ball carrier is going to declare himself down by contact because he thinks that our linebacking core secretly disrespects him?

The dog is Rocky – known around here as the DogCat – and the cat is Luke… brother of Leia. For some reason, the kittens adopted Rocky as their own soon after we let him anywhere close to them. We often find them sleeping with him. But this particular incident was… uhhh… disturbing. :-)

This wasn't directed at LJ
It was directed at the rest of the team. Let’s face it, LJ is clearly not in their future plans so they wouldn’t waste the energy and money to give him a ‘dig’ back. The point of this was for the rest of the team to realize that the behavior is unacceptable. They honestly don’t give a shit how LJ takes it IMHO.

Not just Larry
Larry Johnson is not a small group. It takes a few players to form even one small group, so it obviously ISN’T just aimed at Johnson, who won’t even see it for a week.
by Offense of the 70s on Nov 4, 2009 3:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think it's a way of moving on.
Remember the past, but look to the future.
Larry got his shots in, now Haley is returning the favor… and eye for an eye is what the bible says right? The golden rule?
I think it’s going to serve as a reminder that NO ONE is above the team, the organization. LJ got a $330,000 fine and a 1 game suspension for using a word that “normally” carries a $10,000 fine.
I’m with stags on this though. It’s not just aimed at Larry alone. Sometimes a good leader has to rally the troops against him in order to overcome adversity. If they need to hate the boss to win, then hate the boss.
Can I be your Batman?

There is nothing wrong with running your organization how you see fit
They are making sure that everyone knows they want a team and not a bunch of spoiled little bitches who publicly bash the team and it’s management anytime they see fit.
I am glad they don’t want the players getting together like a bunch of high school kids and forming little bitch fit clubs. When that kind of shit starts happening it can screw your team for years. Lax management will do that to a club. See Edwards, Herm and Crennel, Romeo.

Right, Patrick
NFL management should, indeed, run their teams the way they see fit. And you’re absolutely right: when this stuff starts happening, it can be the death knell for a team.
Here’s what concerns me. Because the sign exists – and is written the way it is, referencing “groups” – I am concerned that it’s already happening. That LJ isn’t the trouble, but rather is a symptom of the trouble.
If there was a sign that simply said, “Winners assemble as a team and find ways to win,” I wouldn’t be nearly as concerned. But the first part of the sign gives me chills.

by ttownmikey on Nov 4, 2009 3:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd Say
That this is a sign that Todd Haley’s problems in the locker room run a hell of a lot deeper than we’ve been seeing.
If he’s got to dime his players out on a sign to get them to follow along, he’s already lost this team. Which isn’t really surprising to me, because frankly the man comes off as a colossal prick and when you combine that with only one win so far then that’s pretty much a recipe for a player revolt.
Small groups? That’s definitely about more than Larry Johnson.

Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.

true
it IS a bit on the negative side, and I was definitely surprised to see it, but is it any different than the message that has already been expressed from day one under the new “regime?” not really. GET GOOD OR GET GONE…that is what they are saying. Or, get on board with our philosophy, or beat it..
by be cee on Nov 4, 2009 5:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Some examples (thought I couldn't find pics of all this)
Dallas: The messages posted in the locker room, instituted under Coach Bill Parcells include, “The tougher our standards, the deeper our commitment,” and “It doesn’t take athletic ability to hustle.”
Coach Dom Capers’ messages include “Understate, overacheive” and “Earn the right to be special.”
Indianapolis: Signs hanging at each end of the locker room say, “No excuses, no explanations.”
Jacksonville: When Tom Coughlin was head coach he had a “concentrationline” painted on the floor that the Jaguars crossed on the way to the field. Current head coach Jack Del Rio initially had a tree stump and axe in the locker room, as part of his “keep chopping wood” message. But they were removed in 2003, after Pro Bowl punter Chris Hanson seriously injured himself with the axe while venting. Now the motivation includes only signs, including one that says, “A player that makes the team great is more valuable than a great player.”
Kansas City: Painted in large letters on a locker room wall is “Share the Commitment.” Elsewhere at the practice facility is a simpler message: “Hit ’em in the mouth.”
Miami: In their game-day and practice locker rooms, the Dolphins have a prominent sign with head coach Nick Saban’s mantra: “Out of yourself and into the team.” …
San Francisco: As the 49ers rebuild, they pass a big sign as they enter their locker room that says “Faithful is believing” and shows the team’s Super Bowl trophies.

I agree with your analogy.
And players only respond to heads on pikes when the coach is someone that the majority of the players will rally around. So far Haley’s given them very little to rally around…it’s just abuse combined with losing.

Just for perspective
Though Coach Haley may be 1-6 at the moment, the first year record is not an appropriate measuring stick to know whether they will be good enough to be a successful coach.
Some first year records for successful NFL coaches:
B. Parcells 3–12–1
B. Walsh 2-14
T. Landry 0-11-1
C. Noll 1-13
D. Coryell 4-9-1
M. Ditka 3-6
C. Ewbank 3-9
J. Fisher 1-5
B. Grant 3-8-3
J. Johnson 1-15
M. Levy 4-12
D. Vermeil 4-10
As for fear, I do not believe that there is an attempt to instill fear. Discipline, which is fundamental and essential, is being put in place after sorely lacking it the previous years. Instead of fear I am in belief that it is nothing more than accountability and living up to your responsibilities as a professional.
There are some coaches on the above list that were hardliners so it is not like this is some new and drastic concept but after Herm’s term this team drastically needed it, even Ray Charles can see that.

You're looking for the negative
If this doesn’t come in the wake of LJs incident, no one says nothing and its just another motivational sign in a locker room.
If “No excuses, no explanations” comes in the wake of a player publicly listing excuses as to why he doesn’t perform, then it too becomes a negative jab, yes?

and grown men don't get screamed at by a so-called leader/teacher/coach
who’s done nothing to prove he has an iota of ability to do the job he’s been handed (but has shown quite a number of times he’s NOT ready for it)
not that there’s actual proof that Pioli (or Haley) ever said that 22 guys off the street thing (not that I’d put it past either of them) … but if they did, that would be proof of how lame and idiotic and egotistical this pair of GM/HC is … you call the screaming and demotions and shipping out good talent being … what, being a MAN? I call BS on that!
I could care less where you work, but if my boss (or I as a teacher/leader) tried to “motivate” the way Haley has done (and with this stupid sign that screams “it’s YOUR fault not MINE”) I’d be fired in a heartbeat
yeah, degrading … from just about first day in, Pioli and (especially) Haley have been degrading of our players, and that is NOT how to lead or the way to earn respect
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

I wonder sometimes if I’m watching the same thing as others. Am I alone in noticing Haley has toned down the yelling the past few weeks?
I know we don’t see him on every single play but the first few games you could count on a shot of Haley screaming at someone at least once a game.
Now it seems like any time they cut to him, he’s got a relatively calm look on his face. The only times I can remember him yelling the past few games is at referees.
this stupid sign that screams "it’s YOUR fault not MINE"
When has Haley not said he needs to improve? I can’t remember reading a press conference where he hasn’t made some comment about needing to get better at some aspect of his job.
Yes he still mentions things the team needs to do better too, but that’s because they do need to be better at some things.
He’s not just saying “I’m a genius, these guys can’t do anything right.” He’s admitting he’s a part of the problem too.
by bh13 on Nov 4, 2009 6:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So tell me upamtn
If you can’t be “buddy buddy” like Herm and you can’t get in players faces like Haley until you’ve won a bunch of games, then what do you do as a first time coach?
It’s great to say that you just treat guys like adults but there is a culture of losing that has become the norm around here. Somebody has to do something drastic to change that. How do you change a first round draft pick that has always done things the same way? Why would a first time coach asking him nicely work? Benching players and sending them packing is really the only tools a coach and GM have to force a player to do things their way.
It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

no clue why people diss the sign
some of the best coaches in the nfl put up signs, quotes etc all over the place…get over it…and its a way of saying either you are a part of the solution or a part of the problem…period. if your are part of the problem, adios… when they can dump you and make it financially smart

Really
does the management think that 53 professionals don’t want to WIN? I mean..I get it. But you’re addressing adults..not kids.
I remember in the last administration when something went foul with players it was Herm or Carl’s fault. Who’s fault is it this year that the players aren’t doing well? Apparently it isn’t the management or the coaching.

It's a sign
Don’t look for hidden meanings because everyone that see’s it is going to read and take it a different way. Personally, I may make a copy to post in the kitchen of my restaurant, for my cooks. Is there a message, or am I putting up just to make you stop and think…“Is that sign directed at me?”
If your offended by a sign, then there is something you may need to address in yourself. I know my good workers will see it and go about with their work, hell they might even like it. The thing is a sign like this should only bother you if you think it is about you. If your sure it’s not about you than you hope the people causing the problems learn from it and get with the program.

Some of these players might be good friends with LJ, he is, after all, their teammate. So when it calls him a loser (and don’t be naive, the sign is very much directed, or inspired by, his actions) you don’t think they might get a little offended by it? And please don’t tell me what to think about this sign

Why are some people bitching about a motivational sign?
I don’t see how that isn’t a motivational sign. Why are fans looking to nitpick at EVERY SINGLE THING the chiefs brass does? How in any way, shape, or form is that sign a bad idea? Its just telling people that we (being the players) need to band together and become winners, not break of into small groups and create dissension by criticizing other players.

It All Depends On Who Put The Sign Up
If it was a player, then it’s the locker room self-policing. If it was the coach, however, then I think upamtn’s interpretation is about right.

It's worth noting that the Pioli/Haley have completely removed or neutered all of the mouths or showoffs on this team.
1. I love(d) TonyG, but he had a huge mouth. He was really the face of the franchise and was, next to Waters, always the best source for an after-game interview. GONE.
2. I love(d) Waters, but he had a huge mouth. Have you heard a single peep from him this entire season? Did anybody ever corroborate that silly “22 men off the street” comment? Yeah I didn’t think so. Interesting that once that story dropped, Waters hasn’t made a public comment. (and did anybody ever mention the silly strategy about going public with a private matter with this regime? stupid!) NEUTERED.
3. I love(d) LJ, but he had lots of issues with keeping his mouth shut, especially when Vermeil was still in town. I think he will be neutered, benched, and finally removed from the team. GONE.
4. I love Bowe, but he had a little problem with running his mouth or doing these silly little celebrations when he did what he was supposed to do. “The Bowe show” indeed. That Bowe is gone. Now we see a modest, hard-working Bowe. Still a little ways to go as far as drops, but definitely improved. And definitely quiet. NEUTERED.
5. Who did I miss? Who else has been verbally neutered or removed from this team? Pollard? McBride? Who’s that silly ass that celebrated with a wild first down signal every time he made one?
Does anybody else see my point? Pioli/Haley don’t appear to be suffering any fools, nor letting anybody else speak for the team. They removed virtually every “leader” from his position, including Huard, Edwards, Gonzalez, Waters, and LJ. All of them were basically silent or gone until two Sunday nights ago and replaced with leaders of Haley/Pioli’s choice.
I don’t anticipate that LJ will be around for long—and I don’t anticipate any other players saying much of anything unless appointed to do so.
See Data Differently.

Haley still has hasn’t done jack compared to Larry Johnson’s dad. You think that’s a nice poster? Larry Johnson’s dad’s posters had exclamation points, sparkles and curly ribbons, and they smelled like cinnamon-spiced apples. They also included photos of JoePa with the eyes cut out so that Larry Johnson’s dad could spy on the players from the hidden passageway behind the wall. Now, THAT’s good coaching. Todd Haley will never be the coach that Larry Johnson’s dad was.
