Having Fun With the Chiefs First Draft Pick

From the FanPosts. We normally avoid draft talk this early but Bewsaf put together a very nice post. -Joel

Even though there is still a lot of football left to be played in the 2009 season it is always fun, at least for me, to think about how the Chiefs might build the team going into next year.  When we look at the team on the seventh game mark we notice that the Chiefs have many 'needs' that need to be addressed through the draft and free agency in 2010.  Assuming the needs today are the same as the needs at the end of the season...which way should the Chiefs go with their #1 draft pick.  Let us assume they will pick in the top 5.

Eric Berry (S)
Talor Mays (S)

The Chiefs could go for a safety with the first pic to improve the pass coverage or run support.

Star-divide

Taylor MaysIn 2008, Taylor Mays opted to stay at USC for one final year of college football.  An intimidating presence on any football field, Taylor Mays has been described as an "absolutely freakish physical specimen.  Mays has been compared to the likes of Sean Taylor, a former safety of the Washington Redskins who was known for his size, speed, and big hits.  Taylor Mays is a 6'3" and 230lb safety that makes his presence known in the run defense.

Eric Berry:  At the beginning of the year everyone was talking about USC safety Taylor Mays.  However, if Eric Berry opts to come out his junior year Taylor may not be the first player chosen at his position.  Many have likened Eric Berry to Ed Reed, a dynamic coverage safety for the Baltimore Ravens.  Eric has been said to have a knack for reading quarterbacks and possesses both pass coverage skills and physical play.  Eric Berry's biggest contribution to the Chiefs defense may be in pass coverage.

Russell Okung (LT)
Trent Williams (LT)

The Chiefs could go for a Left Tackle with the first pic to improve the pass protection and move Albert to another position.

Russell OkungBy most accounts Russell Okung is the best left tackle in the draft.  Most think that Okung could have come out in 2008 as a junior but decided to stay in college one more year and then go pro.  He is said to have great feet and a specialty of pass protection.  A true top 5 pick.

Trent Williams:  Trent was a right tackle for most of his career until this year when he was moved to the left side.  Although the Sooners seem to be having trouble with their young and inexperienced line, Trent Williams has more than held his own.  Although probably not an All-Pro's All-Pro, Williams will be an upgrade for any line and has been likened unto Jammal Brown of the Saints.

Ndamukong Suh (DE/DT)
Dez Bryant (WR)

0818suh_medium

pic source

The Chiefs could go for another DE to try and run a true 3-4 or with a Wide receiver to help the offensive production.

Dezbryant_medium

Ndamukong Suh:  There aren't many defensive tackles in college that can say they led their team in tackles...but that is what Ndamukong Suh can claim.  Suh is a 6'4" and 300lb defensive tackle for the Nebraska Cornhuskers that is projected to be a 3-4 defensive end or a 4-3 defensive tackle.  It would appear that Ndamukong Suh can not only lead his team in tackles but he also has recorded a number of interceptions, due to his athleticism he is asked to drop into coverage, and sacks (7.5 in 2008).

Dez Bryant:  If you were a Michael Crabtree fan then you will probably love Dez bryant.  Bryant is a 6'3" and 220lb wide receiver with great hands.  The only knock on him is he does not have that burner speed...but who needs it when you can go up for the ball like he does.  Dez Bryant could be a true number one receiver in the NFL and any team that gets him will see an increase in their receiver production.

My Vote:  Go with the safety.  Ya, you can pick a good one up in latter rounds...but not a game changer.  I think SuperBowl teams have game changers and Eric Berry is a game changer.

Poll
Which way should the Chiefs go with their first draft pick if their needs are the same at the end of the year as they are now?
Safety. A game changing safety will be a great cornerstone that our defense needs.

Offensive Line. When you pick that high you have to get good value...and a great left tackle is a good value in the top 5.

Defensive Line. You cannot run a true 3-4 without 3-4 players. I don't care that we have drafted a lot of Defensive lineman in the past few years...take care of it now.

Wide Receiver. You have to score to win...and we cannot score.

I voted safety

but more than anything I wanted a button that said “Berry or O-line”

I have no interest in Mays. Vastly overrated and always goes for the big hit. Mediocre instincts, poor angles, and overrated ball sills. Not trying to hate too hard, but hes not what we need right now.

Agree with the B's & stag

Athlete does not necessarily equal pro football player. Mays does not look good in coverage, I agree that he does not wrap up well on tackles, and doesn’t seem to play with much smarts. Definite Raiders pick— go for it Al.

Mays may drop out of the top 10. He’s getting some criticism lately for not showing up when it matters.

but it does not seem to be taking. For the record…here is what I had…

Eric Berry

I love the picture you chose. It looks like he punched that guy to the ground.
However, how good is this Okung kid? If he’s another Joe Thomas or Jake Long, that would be tough to pass up on.

about a Ryan Clady comparison?

Bewsaf

Compares favorably to Broncos left tackle Ryan Clady. Okung is clearly a top 10 talent and it seems likely he’ll be drafted higher.

Final word: Over his career, Okung has developed into the best offensive tackle in college football. He has the kind of athleticism required of a blind-side blocker in the NFL. His pass protection is very good and once he learns better leverage he can become a Pro Bowl-level left tackle.

I hear ya

I could easily see all three being gone for KC’s first pick… then KC is left with:

Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
Taylor Mays, S, USC
Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Nate Allen, FS, South Florida

I don’t know… all of those guys could be high to mid first, or slide into the 2nd…

IF those top 3 were off the board, there’s a lot of QBs available, so maybe the Chiefs can trade down?

I think it has to be Dez Bryant ot Bulaga at that point.

Nate Allen would be the biggest reach right there on your list. Maybe they pick a 3-4 OLB though like Dunlap (Blah) or some other guy.

Who would trade down with us

When no qb’s have been taken yet? Everybody knows we aren’t picking QB

by Sam D on Nov 4, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

we would have to trade down but we can trade out of the 6-7 spot easy..

He can convert to an ILB or OLB.. Haley will get him into shape.. He’s a big physical pass rusher… Also a great great run stopper.. All around beast.. Him and derrick morgan to OLB would be amazing.. Hali and either of these guys would give us a great pass rush IMO..

Sanchez was taken with the 5th or 6th..

i forget but, i think if there’s a mid round team that wants sam or colt or jimmy in particular they will trade up..

Too many good QBs in this draft. You won’t see anyone trading up to get one because a comparable QB would still be available lower. You’ve got Bradford, McCoy and Clausen all right there together.

I like this idea of trading down.

There will probably be some team looking for Colt McCoy or what-not. We trade down and get more picks in what is supposed to be a deep draft and add to a team that has lots of holes and needs lots of picks.

From Wes Bunting's Oct 21st NFP Scouting report

Okung: A physically gifted lineman, but he needs to add more strength to his base. Gets bullied on contact too easily.

it would be a tough call

IF Berry and Okung were both there when the Chiefs pick…

I’d still want Berry, but Okung could be a heckova player too… and we’d all love to see the OL improve by leaps and bounds.

I’m thinking that it’s easily possible that BOTH Berry and Okung will be off of the board when KC picks… in that scenario, I have NO IDEA who I’d want to see them pick…. maybe trade down if they can find a partner

I'm thinking...

that we pick 8th in at best this year with Tampa, St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Tennessee, Oakland and Washington as the guys in front of us. The only ones that I’m worried would take Berry is Detroit and Oakland. St. Louis and Cleveland will draft a QB, maybe Washington too. Tampa will go D for sure, probably Suh. Detroit would probably go with Okung. However, I honestly think we will draft 6th with Oakland and Washington just ahead of us. (the raiders will eventually bench Russell and win two more games). That means we take whoever the Lions don’t. Okung then Berry or vice-versa.

by I_Bleed_Red. on Nov 5, 2009 7:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Pick 8th?

I honestly think that we will go 4-12 this year. The other beatable teams would be the Bills, Browns, and Raiders on our schedual. I think we will pick before Washington, Oakland, and the Browns.
I think we will be 5th maybe 6th.

by Wrestler189s on Nov 5, 2009 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

GAH!!!

I take option 5. Best player available that fills a position of need.

I dont really care who that player is, but its very possible with the 5th pick that Mays and Berry could be gone. If the Chiefs feel like Ndamukong Suh is the best player left when they draft they should take him, if they feel Okung to be the best then take him. Bottom line is, you take the best player who fills a need. Now if they feel that Bradford is the best player then obviously you dont take him because he doesn’t fill a hole.

Everyone agrees that OL, DL, S, WR, and maybe LB are the biggest needs. So take the best player, if the Chiefs decide that Brandon Spikes is the best player in college football then take him.

of course... but that takes the fun out of mock drafts :)

2 Tampa Bay picks…best player available
3 Cleveland picks….. best player available
4 Oakland picks… best player available
5 Detroit picks….best player available
6 Kansas City picks… best player available

What if Berry stays for his Senior year, granted its more than likely not going to happen but it could. I just dont understand why people keep doing it.

But people are also saying definitives like we have to take Berry when more than likely he will be gone before we draft.

I have been reading mock drafts on walterfootball.com

one had KC getting Okung in the 1st, Dez Bryant in the 2nd
another had KC going OT, OT, OC with the first 3 picks
another had KC drafting Fat NT Cody in the 1st, WR in the 2nd

they are all over the place… and are usually wrong until the week of the draft… if they can even get it right then.

I wont read a mock draft until at least the post season starts.

Now I will read things like the Kiper Big Board, and I will read about who the top players are. I have my eye on players that I like, but I won’t go out of my way to make a 5 round mock draft, especially since its nearly impossible to predict it. I wont mention names, but there is a frequent poster who kicks out a “mock” draft every 3 days and its completely different one week to the next with very little research. I just dont get what the point is to kick out stuff so much.

Personally I still think Ndamukong Suh is the best player in college football. Now will he work in the 3-4 at NT maybe not, but if we could trade Dorsey for a high second round pick and take Suh, and then use the Dorsey pick on depth go for it. But whatever… Opinions are like assholes.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Nov 4, 2009 7:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats what they were saying about Dorsey, that he was the best player in College Football

He was the unanimous first overall selection all year…why trade dorsey, if you’re just going to get Suh and then wait 3 more friggin years for the DT to develop. Keep Dorsey and TJ on the line, and then build outward. Thats what I’d do.

Johnnie Morton: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

by craig in calgary on Nov 4, 2009 7:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I absolutely hated the drafting of Dorsey...

I felt from day one he was undersized for a DT. I really wanted Sedrick Ellis. I think Dorsey is progressing well, but I dont think he is a freak like Suh is. Perhaps trading Dorsey is a bad idea. Dorsey may develop into a very good player, but I have a feeling that Suh is going to be a player that well tell our grandkids about.

As much as I like Suh...

Ive said that if you dont think he can play 3-4 DT then dont draft him there. I guess I really didn’t say that in the previous post, but I would much rather have Dorsey Suh (if he can play it) Jackson.

This is a very deep draft. Take Suh, put him opposite Jackson or Dorsey at DE. At the rate we’re collecting picks we will have ample opportunity to fill all our needs. Suh is the best player at a position of need.

Not necessarily...

McGahee tore every ligament in his knee in the Championship game and still came out.

I would think if Tennessee finishes really strong and there is a chance they can win the SEC if he comes back then that would be the only reason he stays. The only way he stays is if he thinks he has a chance of winning a National Championship with the Vols, which I don’t see happening. So he is probably gone, he doesn’t have any loyalty to the current coaching staff so there is that too.

Fair enough...

I think it's more than what he'll make in his first year.

It’s not squandering his chance at a first year. I’d recommend anybody that COULD be drafted in the first (or even later) to go pro. Just too easy to get hurt as a senior, and lose it all.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

that does play sports for the love of the game. Is not the same thing, but Cole Aldrich came back at Kansas because he was having too much fun in college, Matt Leinart came back because he loved college. So it does happen, its just rare. Mostly the same offenders, slightly different order in my book

1.) Tampa Bay picks…. not a QB
2.) Cleveland picks… possibly a QB
3.) St. Louis picks… probably a QB
4.) Washington picks… probably a QB
5.) Detroit picks… not a QB
6.) KC picks…?

Assumptions are that Clausen, Bradford and Locker come out; also that Redskins fall like a rock in the NFC East and fire Zorn, owner wants a QB; Raiders eke out a couple more W’s, slide out of the top 5.

by Wheatboy74 on Nov 4, 2009 8:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Locker is sliding. More and more he’s being told that he needs to stay one more year in school and mature. His physical skills are unparalleled, but if he stays one more year, he’ll be the #1 overall pick.

absolutely true, Bewsaf

and it’s not always the popular pick, either

Defense would be a waste

If he’s gonna be on the field 75% of the time getting worn down because our offense can’t generate first downs, I don’t care who you are. We need OL. I wouldn’t care if we dedicate the whole damn top of the draft on OL.

by KCinIL on Nov 4, 2009 6:12 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Thats why your not a GM....

Teams screw themselves by doing that. Taking less talented players because you need someone at his posistion.

OHANA!

I agree.

You can’t draft an OL with your first round pick just because you need one. His skill level has to actually justify the pick in the first place. All of the Ryan Sims, Junior Siavii picks etc. bear that out. Take the best player available regardless of position. Don’t waste a first round pick on second or third round talent.

But we NEED Victor Riley!!!

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I see a lot of offensive line picks...

Why pick one first pick of the draft? There will be several good ones left in the second round.

Take a Ed Reedesque Safety ERIC FREAKING BERRY as first pick and use second and third rounds to take some O line.

Tackles Jason Fox of Miami and Anthony Davis from Rutgers could both be got in the second round probably and both are good OT prospects.

Eric Berry will be a star and a probowler for many many years to come barring injury.

Am I overstating things or jumping the gun on his bandwagon? AM I!?

I have a feeling

Our first 2 picks will be in the trenches

If KC can land one of the 2 nt’s in FA Cody isn’t an option in the draft, pick #1 will be Cody Okung or Suh. I’m not too high on the Cody pick, looks like he slimmed down to make some $$$$, he reminds me of that Ryan Sims guy. There’s another DE I could see us taking but for the life of me I can’t think of his name.

Mays, Berry, or Bryant? Sorry not as much trouble as we’re having in the trenches, I know it’s nice to dream but it’s not happening.

If KC gets it’s hands on Suh or that other DE I’m thinking of, signs a NT in FA, look for Dorsey to be trade fodder, Pioli will be dangling him for a first or a second. Once you can control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball then you start making picks for guys like Berry and Bryant.

by mcclanahanman on Nov 4, 2009 7:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I bet Suh will be gone...

he is a monster though… i like him a lot

by Lucasjr5 on Nov 4, 2009 7:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yep, he could EASILY be the #1 pick, if it's not a QB

AND, I don’t see Pioli drafting another DE, when Dorsey is playing well.

He’ll want to address the OL, S, and NT positions, as well as LB and WR

i still say eric berry....

and 2 second round OT… lets say 1 turns out to be a star… good for us we know what we got with Eric Berry

by Lucasjr5 on Nov 4, 2009 7:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

interesting...

but, I’d rather take Berry, OT, Center…

Not sure you’d need to take 2 Tackles that high up…
IF they take a 2nd OT… it should be a later round guy, for depth

I agree mostly...

But Berry, O Dowd, Pouncey or Johnson would be nice. Mike Johnson is a hell of a run blocking G. But if Nate Solder is there in the 2nd then I would get him. The only LT besides Solder that I would take with that 2nd round pick would be Anthony Davis.

I think they will fix O line with FA

Use the draft for defense. they do some weird stuff at draft time.

I voted DL

but I wouldn’t take either of the players listed there

I won’t surprise me one bit if Pioli “reaches” again, and uses our first pick on the best nose tackle in the draft.

I’m tellin’ ya’ll, if he does, and he hits on that pick, our 3-4 could have the most dominant DL in the league in 2011-12 – look what a killer DL does for the 3-4 of teams like the Ravens or the Steelers.

I want Suh, Berry, or that fat kid from Bama

We would have a D-line for the next decade (unless we pick Berry of course)

Then I say OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL, how many pick? make them all OL!!!

either way..

we can’t afford to not get any Oline that are capable of starting for certain. If we can pick 2 near the top of the draft and know they are quality material then great. If we don’t do that we may have to pick 3 or 4 for insurance but we definitely need at least 2 new starters for next season minimum. Whether we get them through the draft or through free agency/trades, that remains to be seen.

Watch CJ Spiller on espn 360

if we can build the Line in free agency—- CJ spiller is going be in the Class of reggie Bush and adrian peterson -- in this time of the nfl if you watch the running back position is no longer a 1 man show -—- im pleading with you look at the clemson highlights and Clemson is a class of a football team -— on and off the feild -—— if you dont agree ill understand -- but at least give the guy a look before you all make a decision

Which one?

Reggie Bush is not in Adrian Peterson’s league. Reggie is a good 3rd down back, while AP is as close to Barry Sanders as we have had in a while.

Peterson's...

style doesn’t really compare to Barry Sanders. I think he is more like an OJ Simpson type only stronger, which is incredible. If the kid stays healthy he has a chance to be the best of all time.

by I_Bleed_Red. on Nov 5, 2009 7:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd take Peterson over Sanders any day

Sanders was a great highlight real back, but he lost yards very often trying to make the spectacular play.

ummm
Sanders was a great highlight real back, but he lost yards very often trying to make the spectacular play

Offensive line play (or technically, lack thereof) might have had something to do with that.

Put Barry Sanders behind today’s Viking’s o-line, and he’d be breaking every record in the book.

Barry Sanders

has the most career carries for more than 20 yards and the most carries for loss. I read (or saw) that Barry would go down behind the line to avoid a big hit so he could live to play another play.

This space for rent.

Reggie far better man than Lj will ever be

im not going to argue -—I like A -- but i still think Cj would be one of the pieces if you want a dominate team here in Kc

The really good thing is

There are soooooo many holes on this team that almost any player drafted will fill a need.

by Hank44 on Nov 5, 2009 6:29 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The thing...

we have to remember about this offseason too is that teams will be able to lock up all of their young talent for cheap. Since restricted free agency goes from 4 years to 6 years, teams will be able to put 1 year tenders on all of the RFAs. Honestly, the only mouth watering free agents we even have a shot at are Wilfork and Dansby. We have connections with both of those players. Washington and Dallas won’t be looking to sign either. Philly might go after Dansby, but I honestly think he fits more as a 3-4 weakside inside linebacker and would want to continue to play in that scheme. So that leaves San Francisco and Miami. We have to straight up outbid these teams and of course AZ might still try to resign him. I say go all Daniel Snydar on this kid because we need a vetern playing LB bad. As for Wilfork we will probably get into a bid war with Denver. I think NE lets him walk because thats just what they do. They drafted Ron Brace in the 2nd round last year.

Positional Value

I can’t believe how much clamouring there is for an Offensive Tackle in the first round. You don’t draft for need in the top 5.

But more importantly, the biggest needs for the Chiefs on the o-line are at Guard and Center. Arguably Right Tackle is next. None of those positions are ever taken in the first round. You can get the best on the board in the 2nd round and a quality guy in the 3rd. The biggest reason for protection problems is that our interior line keeps getting pushed back into the QB.

Use the first round pick on BPA, which will hopefully be Berry. Use the 2nd and 3rd and 4th on linemen.

by Jon Yoon on Nov 5, 2009 9:47 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree, except

….I’d be more inclined to utilize free agency to grab a good Guard and/or Center, and use those 2nd round picks to target a LB & WR. With the supposed depth of this year’s draft there should be some excellent skill position players available past the first round, and I’d like to take advantage of this as much as possible.

If Berry is what we think he is I also hope he’s available for KC to take, and if he’s not available hopefully we can trade down for additional picks.

Eric Berry vs. Tim Tebow

That collision in the Florida/Tennessee game makes me want to pick Eric Berry and forget about every other player in college. He will be special.

If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

I know

it almost makes me wish a lot more losses on the team, just for a better chance of getting him. Then again, it’s pretty tough to get good free agents to come to a 2-3 win team…sigh.

Berry

is a lot better talent than the left tackles in this draft. I think we’d regret passing on a guy that good. Left tackles come around every draft, game-changing safeties hardly ever do.
