Morgan, Not Daniels, Lines up at Free Safety for the Chiefs in Practice
The Kansas City Chiefs took the practice field today in preparation for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com has a practice report up and, somewhat surprisingly, DaJuan Morgan lined up at free safety.
The position has been an area of concern since news broke this morning that Jarrad Page was being placed on IR, ending his season, and Jon McGraw has been (and continues to be) out with a leg injury.
Travis Daniels, signed this morning by the team, was working with the cornerbacks.
Looney also tells us that Mike Richardson was missing from practice, which is perhaps the reason Daniels was filling in there, instead of at free safety. Daniels has a little experience at safety and is familiar with the Chiefs scheme so many of us thought he was signed for short-term safety help.
No word on Richardson at this point. He had been playing the nickel since being signed a couple weeks ago.
If Daniels was signed to supplement the Chiefs at safety then they're getting off to a slow start. Or Richardson's absence signals the arrival of another player.
As always with this Chiefs roster, stay tuned.

Yep
They have until Friday to make that decision.

Correct me if Im wrong
but with Page on the IR Daniels took his place right? and then with LJ being suspended SMith could be brought up so we wouldnt need to do that?
by tomahawk44 on Nov 4, 2009 12:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct as well
But LJ comes back from suspension on 11/9 so they’ll need another spot then.
by Joel Thorman on Nov 4, 2009 12:02 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Cool
Thanks for clearing that up for me I was a little confused.
by tomahawk44 on Nov 4, 2009 12:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Wait
No, for Smith we DO need another roster spot.
Chambers took LJ’s spot and Daniels took Page’s spot. No open spot right now.
by Joel Thorman on Nov 4, 2009 12:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i was just gonna say that
didn’t we sign Chambers in LJ’s spot?
by CHIEFER on Nov 4, 2009 12:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
so that means that
richardson will be cut for kolby
by CHIEFER on Nov 4, 2009 12:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, if he's actually cut
As of now we don’t know anything.
by Joel Thorman on Nov 4, 2009 12:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
and too keep Chambers
we will have to cut another when LJ is back

I'd like to see how Morgan plays
I thought he was one of the top safeties in his draft class. I hope the coaches give him a chance to play before deciding he can’t.
2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp

yeah, I see NO benefit to bringing James in

It gives us an excuse to release Larry Johnson.

as if they need any more excuses for that!!!!
activating Kolby Smith should be all the excuse they need… on top of LJ being LJ

Hard for Haley to pass on Edge
I agree that Charles deserves a shot and he will get it this week. Bringing in Edge would give him even more motivation.

exactly
Haley kinda phased Edge out last year anyway, didn’t he?

Who knows
Part of me expects Haley to go after Edge just based off the fact that we have signed pretty much anyone with a Cardinals/Dolphins/Patriots connection or who has big-name recognition (Toomer, Chambers, Thomas, etc.) Edge has both.
Doesn’t mean I agree with it, but if it means we cut Larry Johnson to make room I am all for it.

I'd be for bringing

Why..
would we go after the guy that was replaced mid season and then cut from AZ ….the team that was at the bottom of the league in rushing last yr?…Edge stepped up a little bit in the playoffs last yr but when I say a little bit, I REALLY mean a lttle bit,,,

Right
But they picked up old receivers that they hoped were better than what they have.
This is how I look at the RB position. You have a few exceptional runners like AP, LT of old and of course Sanders, who are just sick.
Then you have everyone else. I haven’t seen very many guys who can do squat without an offensive line. So as far as I can tell Edge at this point, is a worse version of LJ. Our only hope at RB right now is to use our young, fast hungry guys. We need guys with the athletic ability to make something happen behind the terrible line.

Didn't we draft an RB in the 6th or 7th round last year?
Where is he? Every year there is Diamond in the Rough RB’s that come out of the late rounds.

Javarris Williams
on the practice squad
He has some good potential.
I seriously doubt Edge is brought in… this job is up for Charles and Kolby to grab…. WIlliams may have his shot next year

What was funny was ...
We’re not the only ones who notice this disturbing little trend going on. Listening to a SportsCenter radio newscast last night, they had a story about Chambers — basically that the Bears GM had been convinced to take a shot at picking him up by one of their analysts, but that the Chiefs got him first — and then followed that up with a “And Edgerrin James is available; he was released by the Seahawks” which had a distinct “expect him to go to Kansas City next” subtext to its tone.

I thought you could only claim one person per week off waivers?
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I'll stand corrected...
I’ve been the first one to correct people who say Morgan should get the shot at FS… because he’s a SS…
It might be just the opportunity he needs to show that he can play both spots, and at least provide valuable depth

Morgan played CB/FS in college
his skillset in his coverage, not tackling or run support. I never knew why Edwards used him at SS, especially when playing with McGraw. I still don’t know why Haley’s continued to play him at SS and am glad he’s making the switch finally to FS. Hopefully he takes advantage of the opportunity because it appears the job is now open for grabs.

I wouldn't.
Not on this team.
One week you’re stepping up and taking the starting job, the next week you’re waiting to see if someone is going to pick you up because someone saw some “stellar” has-been drop onto the waiver wire.

There just isn't much out there in the way of FA safeties
I went through the available FAs that have starting experience and its a pretty short list.
Clinton Hart (cut from SD this year)
Marlon McCree (as far as I can tell didn’t play much at all last year)
Stuart Schweigert (cut by Detroit, enough said)
Tank Williams (knee injuries have kept him out the last couple seasons)
It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.
